KT3 Ultra + Barton --> overclocking results

I'll try to answer a few questions raised:
zip227:
5.7 is designed for all the KT3 motherboards, ARU or not, Ultra or Ultra2.
Do not use "Auto", always configure it manually, especially if you want to go higher than 133.
Your PC2700 allows you to set the FSB at 166. Since your CPU is unlocked, I would try setting 12*166, for a start. If temperature remains under 55°C (idle) and if an hour of Prime95 does not give you an error, then increase the coefficient 12-->12.5-->13-->...  until you reach the temperature limit or get errors.
Okay:
Thats the whole point! The first KT3 Ultra1 does not officially support Bartons, but in practice, it does!
MSI never gave an explanation as to why they pretend it does not work, as far as I know.
There is no PCI/AGP lock, but there is a PCI/AGP divider, as explained in the original post. The consequence is: you may run into instabilities at FSBs between 145 and 152, but it may automagically work with an FSB above 152!
BarryB:
Since my Barton is locked, I just incremented FSB 2-3 steps at a time.
At 178, it would not even load Windows.
At 176, it would load Windows but would crash randomly + temperature under load would reach the KT3's safety shutdown CPU limit too (64°C on my board).
At 175, it works fine. I ran Prime95 for a couple of hours, and CPU temperature under load maxed at 63°C.
Note I use a silent TT fan (2300rpm only), and have a poorly ventilated case, so your max FSB may differ . Also, I will probably have crashes when the room's temperature rises in summer.

  • KT3 Ultra Overclocking

I'm not really an overclocking buff, but if I were to get a KT3 Ultra and overclock the FSB to 166mhz, but lower the processor multiplier to approximately its rated speed, would I experience any horrible instability? Or would this be a very nice performance gain?
I'd be using 333mhz DDR for this, and as an example, say I use a 1.2ghZ athlon.
    9*133=1195
    7.5*166=1245
What kind of settings would I have to choose?
I would think the ram multiplier would be 1:1, but I don't understand exactly how to set the PCI and AGP dividers. What ratio would I set those at? Or are they not something you set?
Heh.  Please excuse my ignorance on the subject.
Just looking for comments on the idea.  )

Heh. I guess I've figured out most of the above. I know that the KT3 Ultra uses the 5:1 PCI divider when the fsb is set to 166mhz, so my question is this: Does the KT3 Ultra have the 5:2 (is that right?) AGP divider?
I'm also still interested in any issues with the overclocking I mentioned.
    Thanks a lot!

  • KT3 Ultra 2R + Barton 3000+

    Hi all..
    Hope someone can help.
I have a KT3 Ultra 2R board with the following stats:
Athlon XP (Barton) 3000+ FSB 166 CPU
    CoolerMaster HHC-001 heatpipe H/sink with 80mm fan
    Antec 520W PSU
2 x 100 ATA Maxtor Viper 80Gb HDD's with 8Mb cache each in striped RAID array
    Asus TI 4600 Ultra 128Mb V/card
    Audigy S/card
    Lite-on CD/RW
    Lite-on CD/DVD
2 x 512Mb Corsair XMS 3000 DDR Ram (333 and above) with aluminium heat spreaders
    Lian-Li PC70 Tower case with 6 x 80mm fans
    Rounded cables throughout
    Win XP + SP1
    The Problem:
This system worked fine with an Athlon XP 2200 CPU and I read MSI's CPU support list and saw the KT3 Ultra 2 6380E supported the Barton XP 3000+ CPU's so I bought one.  :P
At first I had trouble booting on the 5.7 version bios, with the lock ups throught the bootup process. I reset the bois to the defaults and slowly worked up the settings using the recommendations in the forums.
At the moment, the system will boot up with fast command set to normal, no agressive DDR timings, 1T command disabled, fastwrite disabled, agp read/write disabled and SDRAM set to SPD (HCLK).
My 3DMark01 & 3DMark03 scores are lower than when I had the XP 2200 CPU installed and the SiSoft sandra results are the equivalent of a Athlon 2000. MSI says the board supports the Barton 3000+, but at what cost ???  :O
The system is very unstable and and requires on average 3 boots to boot up successfully. The 3DMark03 test often locks up mid way.
Any help or the settings MSI or you used to achieve their results would be VERY helpful. Please Help... ;(

I have had a similar problem running my kt3 ultra2 (non raid) at 166 fsb. In mid april I bought a 2600+ 166 fsb athlon to upgrade my system from a 1.2 ghz athlon. I bought some new pc2700 crucial ram to go along with the processor. I had also recently bought a radeon 9700 pro in late march, and a 1.2 athlon would just be a waste of this great vid card. I had been running fine with the radeon and the 1.2 athlon with the msi 5.7 bios and 4.43 via 4-in-1's.
I battled this problem for weeks. I bought a new antec 550 watt PSU, corsair xms 3200 ram, and new antec tower case trying to find out if the problem was ram, power or heat. I should also note that turning on spread spectrum helped a little in stability. Setting it to .50% made it stable in windows and games, but the computer would not turn on if shutdown unless I cleared the cmos. No setting besides this had any effect on stability. Even conservative ram timings. I was about to buy an Asus a7n8x when I realized that I had once run my old cpu and ram at 166 fsb when I had the 5.6 bios a couple of months back. I did not keep it like that in fear of damaging the ram while overclocked.
So I reflashed to 5.6 which still supported the 2600+. That finally worked almost perfectly, although I still have to keep spread spectrum at .25% to be stable (which is odd, people say that is supposed to hurt stability). So in my situation, it was the bios that was faulty. I have had some very ramdom crashes to the desktop (3 of them) in games and one hardlock with a blank bluescreen in unreal2. This is over a span of a month. So it is not perfect. It might be the display drivers causing this, which I have recently upgraded, or I might need to back off my ram timings which are at 2-2-2-5 which this ram can handle easily at 166. 3dmark has yet to crash. Prime 95 passed when I ran it for 30 minutes. Im going to run prime 95 today and see if it will run for like 12 hours stable. Im still looking into getting a new nforce 2 mobo, however (abit or asus).
I hope this helps your situation, you should give it a try. Although, the 5.6 bios does not support the 3000+. It might still work, it will maybe just not show up as a 3000+ in the bios, but as a 2.17 Athlon XP.
I think MSI should be made aware of this possible 5.7 bios fsb instability. Why spread spectrum seems to be related in my situation, is really odd also.

  • Help me Overclock! :) KT3 Ultra-ARU & Athlon XP 2100+

Been trying some things out, and reading a LOT of stuff on overclocking, but still kind of confused by some of it. Wanted to see what you guys think I can do with the following:
    MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU
AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (Stock AMD Heatsink & Fan)
1.0 G (2 512 sticks) of RAM (Kingston ValueRAM) (With Thermaltake aluminum RAM cooler on one stick, with an attached fan that blows over both sticks.)
    MSI Geforce FX 5200
Just wanted to see if anyone had any success with this particular combination. It will be cooled by fans, and this is the case I have: http://www.xoxide.com/xviper.html
It has fans blowing right over the AGP and PCI slots, as well as a fan on the front blowing over the hard drives and an exhaust fan on the back of the case.
Here's some pictures if you need them:

    you are welcome mate.
if CPU became instable increase CPU Vcore with one step.
get a copy of Orthos to check CPU stability:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=99013.0
set priority to 7, and 1st test (Small FFT's) when error appear there increase CPU Vcore with one step and retest.
I'll keep that in mind. Got the FSB at 155 now - gona start moving slower.
Got another question if you don't mind - You said to force the memory clock to 133 - i'm not sure how to do that. It seems locked. Here's my options for the SDRAM stuff in the Bios:
Configure DRAM Frequency: SPD or USER
    SDRAM Frequency: HCLK/HCLK+33/SPD
    CAS# Latency: 2/2.5
    Row Precharge Time: 2T/3T
    RAS Pulse Width: 5t/6t
    RAS to CAS Delay: 2t/3t
    SDRAM Bank Interleave: Disabled/2-way/4-way
    SDRAM Burst Length: 4QW/8QW
    SDRAM IT Command: enabled/Disabled
    Fast Command: Normal/Fast/Ultra
Now, when Configure DRAM Frequency is set to user, I can mod everything in that menu - however as soon as the FSB is set to 166 the SDRAM Frequency can only be set to HCLK - the other options disappear. But, even at 165 it can be set to HCLK, HCLK+33 or SPD.
Not sure what to do there. And, are they any other options you would reccomend changing in that menu?

[VIA] Does MSI KT3 Ultra have a 1/5 divider?

That may be possible Wonkanoby , i'm not arguing against that (where the 5 divider kicks in).
But the issue is with going from 166 and upwards divider stays at 5 forever and cause you trouble with agp & pci devices.
Maybe I was unclear with the sentense:
"Fuzzy logic up the fsb so the divider divides by 5 all the way up beyond 166 PCI/AGP frequency then follows ."
What I meant is from 166 and further upwards the divider is 5 nomatter what the fsb/mem freq. is .
This way a fsb overclock to say 190~200 gives near 40mhz 80mhz on pci bus / agp as there is no
divider 6 kicking in on Kt333 . And theese pci/agp frequencys is not any good for your equiptment .

  • Overclocking the MSI KT3 Ultra ARU

    Hey,
I read some reviews with the kt3 Ultra ARU and i have read that people have been getting the FSB up to around 167? Yet, i fail to get it past 151?  Any suggestions?
    -Knowa-
    MSI KT3 Ultra ARU
    AMD xp 1800+
    768 mb pc2100
    TDK 40x12x48
    Lite ON DVD
    ATI Radeon 8500 (GIGABYTE)

you would have more chance of it booting at 166
than 151 as the divider kicks in at 152
at 166 fsb your video and pci slots are at the correct speed
it can be done if you have been lucky with the cpu you gotlink

as some of u may be aware the 9600 family of cards are very picky about fast writes. In order to run games without lock ups/crashes i must enable fast writes. The problem is that when i do, i get corrupt text, lines around my cursors, video lag etc etc. I recently switch to a barton 2500 that is running a 1.87ghz at 133fsb, before i ran an 1800 that did not have any of these problems with fast write enabled. bios and xp recognixed it as a 2500+ and i have the ratio set to auto and memory set to HCLK. I tried varios drivers for the gfx card and all produced the same results. Also tried all combinations of bios fast write on gfx control panel off, on etc. any ideas?
    TIA

fast write disabled = game willl lock, the 9600 family of cards are notorious for this, i was able to fix my corrupt text and cursor problem by moving the slider under troubleshooting in the ati panel down a notch. in game im still seeing some problems though, hopefully the game specific forums can give me some help. thiis is really annoying because the dam game ran fine with my 1800 i went to the 5.09 drivers on the reccomendation from another forumite.

  • MSI KT3 Ultra Reviews (NOT ARU)

I can't find any MSI KT3 Ultra Reviews on the web
Does anyone know where I can find MSI KT3 Ultra Reviews?
(I don't want the MSI KT3 Ultra ARU reviews)

bas is correct.  an ARU and non ARu are going to function the same and perfrom pretty much the same
Im just posting in addition to what Bas said since I have both the KT3 Ultra and KT3 Ultra ARU and I can tell you from personal experience they perform identically
    =======================================
The only rant I have about the ARU is the ARU has that ugly uneeded and crappy fan on the northbrdige....LOL I really like the non ARU without the fan better.  The orange heatsink on the nonARU is more than enough to cool the NB even when overclocking.  The KT333CE chip is well designed and doesnt get that hot by its very nature.  So that darn cheapy fan is just for looks and serves no functional purpose on this chipset.
And best of all with the non ARU - the orange heatsink makes no noise and has no moving parts to break down
( :D ok done with my rant.  Seems everyday I have to tell how I hate that silly silver fan  lol :D )

  • D3D crashing on KT3 Ultra 2 with 166 FSB

I've just upgraded my CPU from a XP2000+ Palomino to a Barton 2500 with the idea of overclocking it but I'm having problems running it at stock speed. I'm using a KT3 Ultra 2 board with the latest 5.7 bios and a Radeon 9700 PRO. As soon as I run any 3d apps with a 166 Mhz FSB my PC crashes immediately.
I've tested the CPU and memory with Sandra and as far as I can tell the system is 100% stable until my 3D card kicks in. If I underclock the Radeon core & memory then the system becomes stable again.
If I go back to a 133 FSB then everything runs with the Radeon at full clock speed. I'm coming to the conclusion that the AGP divider isn't kicking in and I'm overclocking the bus - is there any way to test this?
Is my motherboard knackered? Can anyone help?

Thanks for the suggestion. I've had a go at 167FSB but its just the same. My PSU is a Thermaltake Xaser 480W.
I've found the bit of Sisoftware Sandra that tells you the AGP multiplier and its still down as being 1/2 at FSB166 although the PCI has correctly gone to 1/5 so it looks like my first guess was right.  Is there any way to force it back down to 66MHz?

  • Help with kt3 ultra

also.... when I am open the system in control pannel, it tells me that I am using 2.xx mhz and 3xx mb ram...
I am going to buy a new cpu and graphs card now to see is that work...

  • KT3 Ultra 2 funny bios

I have a strange situation here. I have been running a XP1700+ palamino unlocked at 9.5x190 (1810) (max ram timings)  with the original bios which was v5.5. I decided to pick up 2400+ so before installing it I flashed the bios to v5.6  which is supposed to support it. It does. Tried overclocking a little with it locked got to 2325@155fsb. Over that unstable.
So I decided to unlock the 2400+. Put back in and it was unlocked, so start going up. 12.5 x160 fsb keeping it around 2000mhz. Totally unstable.Drop fsb to155 and its stable. Try to use the 15 multiplier (stock speed) Boots at 933(7x). Try 14 mult. @666(5x) useless multipliers. Now it seems I'm being limited by the fsb, strange because 1700 would run @190fsb( everything the same except CPU and Bios).
I figured I must have got a bad Cpu.So I pull it out to see if something  else may have gone bad, and put 1700 back in. Suprise!! max stable fsb 155. .
After Trying slow timings in bios and everything ,still no go. SO I flashed back to bios v5.5. Reboot we're up to 173fsb .Ran tests over and over.Stable.. Better but what happened to 190!!!
So now I put the 2400 back in unlocked and works fine up to 173fsb BUT I still have a max mult of 12.5  and max fsb 173 .
Is the bios these boards ship with different than the ones they have posted on their site?
If anyone has any info, it would be appreciated.

I have been clearing CMOS each time. I understand that It would seem to be hardware but not sure why I can once again go higher when I flash back to older bios (not as high as original but higher than v5.6) Also with the 1700 the bios was the only change.
The other thing with the multipliers of 14 and 15 not giving the correct result also bothers me. I know it can do a 15x because it does with cpu locked but when unlocked no go. Is this a limit of the KT333 the KT3 Ultra 2 or a bug in the Bios.
One last thing there is an option 12.5/13 but as far as I can tell choosing it only give 12.5 .Is there some way to get 13x ?

  • Msi kt3 ultra, msi gf4 4200 tvout problem

    I have a msi gf4 4200 64mb card and i have a msi kt3 ultra aru and windows xp,
my problem is tv out is garbled in pal , ntsc is grey (iam in europe), the colours seem inverted blues are red, etc and theres a ghosting effect around moving images like in videos or around the cursor
Ive tried everything from default mem setting , to high performance , tried diferent driver sets , tried windows 2000, tried via chipset drivers, latest msi, nvidia gf drivers, pal b , g , i , 60hz, diferent resolutions, clone view, single output to tv, stretch view , nothing seems to fix it, the only thing that comes close to fixing it is using the tvtool http://tvtool.info/ with color fix correction activated, but the images isnt stable its got a weird strecthing, shimmering effect on the bottom half of the tv image
Iam sure that the problem is not tv or cable related because i tried a friends p4 (board msi sis 645dx) with the exact same model gf4 4200 (not my one) with my scart cable and tv set up and it worked fine.
Could it be a voltage problem? ive even tried upping agp and core voltage a bit to see if helps, and nothing

    mhuizing,
nope havent tried a diferent tv , but it should work ,  i tested the connection with a friends computer
exact same gfx card model and it worked fine!
My old system leadtek gf3 ti200 , epox 8kha+ worked fine with this connection.
Iam using a scart cable to a video , then from the vid to the tv via antena cable
i upgraded and voila, i got some headaches for free  :P !!!

  • KT3 Ultra-ARU not work with ATI 9600pro?

    Hi,
I have recently(yesterday) bought an ATI 9600pro, to upgrade my old GF2pro. As the title says, I have the KT3 Ultra-ARU(MS-6380E)
There seems to be lockup problems that involve only certian games and the ATI DVD player. In all instances the lock ups happen when the mouse is moved. With respect to the ATI DVD player, it will lock if the mouse is moved over the video window.
I have tried a few things but nothing works, so I am posting here to try and see if someone knows something and I will contact ATI in a few hours, or maybe tomorrow.

For via chipset (kt333 based msi kt3 ultra-aru) i can now obtain full hardware acceleration and 100% stable for c&c generals game by:
    1) download and install latest catalyst 3.7 driver/control panel/samartgart from ati.
    2) disable fast-write in bios..
    3) go to c:programsati technologyati control panel and execute smartgart
    4) enable - pci read/write and agp read.
    5) disable - agp write (default in my case was on causing the problem).
    6) "apply", reboot, then "ok".

  • KT3 Ultra ARU Slow HD Transfer Rates

    Hello,
First, please see my system information at the bottom of this message.
I have a MSI KT3 Ultra ARU motherboard and have installed a Maxtor ATA133 60GB hard drive with 2 MB cache.  The hard drive is jumpered as Master and is connected all by itself on the IDE1 ribbon cable.  On IDE2 I have a CDRW (Master) and a CD-ROM (Slave).  My other hard drive (WD 120GB ATA100 8 MB cache) is on IDE3 and is set up in RAID 1+0 stripe.
I recently ran the Sandra file system benchmark on my hard drives with what I think are very discouraging results.  My Maxtor drive on IDE1 scored 32 MB/s and my WD drive on IDE3 came in at 23 MB/s.  Those are some stinky results aren’t they?
I checked my Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and it indicates that for my Primary IDE Channel the current transfer mode for device 0 is Ultra DMA Mode 6.  I don’t know how to check the transfer mode on my IDE3 hard drive.
Question #1:  Are my 32 MB/s and 23 MB/s results slow for my hardware?
Question #2:  If these results are slow, how can I increase the transfer rates?
    Please help!
    Thank you!!!!

These tranfer rates seem fine for sequential read rates. The maxtor drive is at mode 6 and the WD should be at mode 5 if its ATA100.
