Moved Library & Need To Synch Playlists to New Location

I relocated my library to a new drive and imported my playlist but the playlist shows the old drive location. For example, my library was on my F:/ drive, now it is on my C:/ drive. When I imported the playlist the locations for the files are still showing F:/
How can I synch my playlist to the new location?

Do you have a backup version of the library file that you deleted? If you're not bothered about Date Added and have all the content that you want then I guess it doesn't matter too much but it might be best to start from where you were, rather than where you are now.
When you export playlists from iTunes it records the absolute paths to each file, so changing the folder you import the playlist from doesn't work. Setting a new media folder path in iTunes and then consolidating to it would have worked. See make a split library portable for the approach I would have taken at the outset.
If you rename the folder on F: breaking the links from the library you may be able to get iTunes to reconnect to the copies in the media folder on C: otherwise I have a repair tool for broken links.

    Hello pryan1012,
What this message means is that you have more music in your itunes library than there is free space in your ipod.
I had this same issue at one time. This is what helped me put my music on the ipod. I used manually manage.

  • HT1364 I am trying to change the location of my itunes library and the library doesn't copy to the new location.

I am trying to change the location of my itunes library and the library doesn't copy to the new location.  I followed the steps in the help message (HT1364) exactly but I am not prompted to consolidate in the new location.  Any suggestions?

Hi ed2345 and diesel vdub,  when I consolidate, the files start copying to the new location and part way through I get a message that the copying failed (-50) even though all of the files are already in place in the new location.  Should I just delete the itunes in the new location and manually copy the files again?  But in itunes, I have indicated that the new location is on the external hard drive but itunes seems to ignore that and still looks for itunes in the original location on my internal hard drive.  I disabled the location of itunes in the old location (by labelling itunes as "itunes old") and it tried to create a new itunes at the old location and prompted me to import music and videos from a CD or other source.  I hope I am making sense.

  • Problems moving library from old external drive to new one

I keep all my music on an external hard drive connected to my laptop at home. I am now spending several months away from home, and couldn't take my external drive with me.
I planned to handle this by using iTunes backup feature to put my whole library on DVD, then buy a new external hard drive to take with me, and sse iTunes backup feature to rebuild the library on the new external HDD.
However, I can't get the library to restore/re-load/re-import from the backup DVDs. The iTunes backup/restore instructions tell you to open iTunes then insert the backup DVD. When I do that, I get the following error message:
"The Disc "Backup2007-07-09" cannot be read. An unknown error occurred (-69)."
However, I can read the DVD using just going through My Computer, so I really don't believe it's a problem with the disc.
So, if this backup method isn't working, how can I re-create my library on the new hard drive? I have dozens and dozens of playlists, a lot of them smart playlists that depend on such things as play count, rating, and date added, so i really need to keep all my tags.
I thought of two possible work-arounds.
Plan A: Copy all the music myself (ie, not using iTunes) onto the new external hard drive, using the same filename and path as they had on the old external hard drive, then import the Library.itl file that's on the backup DVD (manually copying over the default one created by iTunes).
Would that work? The big annoyance of this plan, I should add, is that, looking at the files on the backup DVD, i can see that iTunes added a number behind each folder name (ie, "01 Al Green") and behind each album title (ie, "01 Al Green - Greatest Hits"). It seems to me I would have to go through and manually delete all the numerals in both artist and album names in order for the .itl file to point to the right place. That would take hours...
Plan B: (Really not a great plan, but I'm grasping here...)
Give up on the backup altogether. Keep adding music and podcasts to my library as is. All my music that is sitting on my far, far away home HDD will get the exclamation point next to it in iTunes. Then, when i try to sync the ipod, if i'm thinking this through right, iTunes will go ahead and add the new stuff to my ipod, but all the old stuff will just not copy over, and then at the end of syncing i'll get the error message to the effect of "itunes didn't copy song x because the file could not be found." This option is far from ideal, as my playlists won't update, but at least i'll still have the playlists.
Do either of these sound like they would work?
    Any other suggestions?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

If you can you connect both external drives to the computer at the same time, it would be easier to use the "Consolidate Library" utility in iTunes to move (actually copy) your media to the new drive.
1- Open iTunes preferences and select the Advanced tab. Change the location of your iTunes music folder to a location on your new drive. Also select the options "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library". Close the preferences dialog.
2- On the iTunes menu, select Advanced/Consolidate Library. This will gather all your media and copy it to the new location (the folder you designated in step 1).
3- After the consolidation is complete, verify that your music still plays, and check "Get Info" on some items to verify that iTunes is looking at the new location.
4- Optional. Delete the original files on your external drive. Do this only if you are certain that everything copied over to the new drive.
5- Optional. Close iTunes and locate your "iTunes Library.itl" file. This is typically in your iTunes folder, which may be on your computer's drive and not the external drive. Move this file to somewhere on your new external drive. Next, hold the Shift key as you launch iTunes and you'll be prompted to "Create Library" or "Choose Library". Select "Choose Library" and navigate to where you put the "iTunes Library.itl" file. This is a one-time step that tells iTunes where to boot the library from.

  • Moved library to an external and can't locate files

I moved my library from my laptop by copying the whole itunes folder to my external and then choosing the library in the new location when opening Itunes. This seemed to work fine. So I tried ripping a cd and found that the resulting files didn't go to the new external, but back to the C drive (old location). I then changed the import music location (under edit/preferences/advanced) to the new external location and then consolidated to it. I then deleted my original files on my C drive. Now, any song I select to play can not be located and requires manual location. I have about 40,000 songs and I'm starting to freak out. I really don't want to lose my playcounts, lists, and ratings.
    Any help would be wonderful!
    Thanks.

Try using iTunes Folder Watch to work out where iTunes "thinks" your missing files should be. Generally the whole iTunes folder is portable provided that all the media is inside the *iTunes Music/iTunes Media* folder which in turn is in the folder where the *iTunes Library.itl* file is stored. If you don't start off with this layout then iTunes won't track files when you move the folder.

  • How to get batch recognition of (!) on some tracks after moving library from external hard drive to new iMac (with terabyte hard drive)?

    I'm using Lion 10.7.2 and iTunes 10.5.2
I have moved my iTunes music from an external hard drive onto my new iMac (with a terabyte hard drive) with music folder organized - when I try to play some tracks I get the iTunes can't locate warning and so I follow through and show iTunes the track - they are all in the music folder on my iMac hard drive - they all copied over and they all appear in the iTunes library list - so far as I can tell out of a 500 gigabyte music collection - but there are so many giving me the error - many other tracks function as they should too, some work others don't - So I'm looking for a way to get all the error tracks fixed in a batch correction way. Doing this individually with each track just isn't realistic.
Can anyone suggest how I might fix this issue?
Also, after I show iTunes the song location and it plays, I get a find files prompt that looks like it wants to find other files, but that just causes the process to jam and I have to force quit iTunes and then it doesn't remember what I last showed it next time I open iTunes.
Also I'm trying to avoid the use of the consolidate function because that would copy a whole other set of music - not in iTunes - that is in the process of being edited (audio hijack pro and fission tools being used to put vinyl and tapes to mp3) But all that other music just means the consolodate function across my whole computer would be too much.

Some details seem to be coming into focus - I have started scrolling through the main library list A to Z repairing tracks individually (there are thousands, but it's what works so far) - as I work through, it appears the problem occurred on tracks where album artist metadata was different than song artist metadata, predominantly. I'm not sure that is 100% the case in every instance, but that is what it's looking like. I don't why that happened, must be some technical glich I guess.
Also, I tried running Doug's Scripts - the one titled, iTunes Track CPR v1.3 - it is supposed to fix exactly the kind of issue I'm having - I bet it would work for some people with a similar issue - but for my case it only identifies the 'de-linked' tracks and doesn't repair them - that is at least helpful as I scroll though to fix them - I can see exactly which tracks have the issue quickly after running that script - but iTunes doesn't remember that warning symbol after a log-out, so it's only worth running the script on a set of tracks I intend to review and fix in any given session at a time.
If you are interested, Doug's free scripts can be found at
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=itunestrackcpr
there are other interesting and useful iTunes scripts there too...
also, unrelated to the issue I'm having, I found a lot of really useful and time saving metadata fixing free scripts at - hubi's iTunes scripts - the page isn't English, but the script download is easy to find -
hubi's scripts work for batch selections of tracks - so if you import an album and find the metadata screwed up somehow, you can select the whole set of screwed up tags at once (even across a series of albums), run the easy to use script, and watch it all be fixed automatically while you sit back and relax...
    http://hubionmac.com/wordpress/category/softwareschmiede/applescripting/itunes/
just for reference, here is a sampling of what hubi's scripts can do...
there are other useful scripts out there - the tough part can be finding the one that helps you...
    01-(un)capitalizes
    01-(un)capitalizes
This script changes.... THIS TEXT into This Text... or this text
    01-Delete spaces
Sometimes invisible blanks are behind an artist name or album name...this script deletes these blanks behind or infront of the strings
    01-Delete x first-last chars. of Title
A Name like "01--Ray Of Light" will be changed to "Ray Of Light" and the01 will be entered in the tracks tracknumber id3 field =)
    01-fix combined Artist-Title
    Sometimes Tracknames look like:
"Madonna---Ray of Light" and in the artist field you see something like"Ripped by Me"... this script puts Madonna back to the right field... all youhave to do is to enter the right delimiter ("---" in this case)
    01-switch Artist<->Title...
Switch ID3 field a with ID3 field b (not only Artist with Title any more =)!
    01-z_filename ->Title
Sets the ID3 field Title to the track's filename)
    01-z_trackNr-Filename->ID3
When a track's filename look like "01-Madonna-Ray of Light.mp3" andyou don't have the track's tracknumber stored in the ID3 Tag... this Scriptcan do this for your =)

  • Moving library from a PC to a new Mac

I recently made the move over to the good team (mac) from my desktop PC (I bought an iBook G4.) Anyway, I had already got rid of the PC before i got the iBook so the initial problem is that i no longer have the PC to revert too. However, I do have my iPod with my entire music library on it. (I figured that I could just do it this way.) The main problem/question is how do I transfer the music library on my iPod to iTunes on my new Mac iBook without sacrificing any of my 3,000 songs!?
Thank You VERY Much in Advance!!!

Check out the iPod TroubleShooting FAQ
Basically, you should have considered the move BEFORE trashing the PC. Boxy's link would have been perfect advice if you still had the PC available. With the PC on hand, you have several supported possibilities for transferring the music. With the music only on the iPod, you have a single, unsupported option of trying to offload the music from the iPod. This was specifically designed to be difficult to reduce piracy.
Check out the "Lost Your Music?" links in the FAQ
Also, make backups from iTunes to avoid a repeat of this issue.
Good luck. Give a holler if you have more questions.

  • Matching Itunes to a moved library. Please help.

I recently moved my library onto an external drive. I can still see all the track lists but none will play without manually locating them. I only get the exclamation mark saying the song can't be located and have to go off and find it on the ext. drive.
I followed the instructions for moving the library word for word (i think), but is there anything I can do to match the library to the songs in their new location 'en masse'?
I appreciate any pointers you may have on this, as I've searched the support and discussion boards for quite a while and I"m none the wiser.
    Cheers!

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. When I make time to do it I'll use the attached link as my guide. Hope it works for you.

  • HT1229 When i copy my iPhoto file (261 GB) in a new location i see only 30 photos

    Problems moving iPhoto library

Sorry - do you want help? If so you must give more than "something does not work"
What version of iPhoto? Is OS X 10.5.2 as you state correct for your OS? What format is the drive that you moved the iphoto library to? How exactly did you move it?
    the general answer is
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Moving library and playlists to a new computer?

Is there an easier way to transfer everything to a new computer? Purchases from iTunes are easy enough, but I've also got all of the music that I've burned from discs, and gotten from Napster (From when they were subscription music site, not when they were a file sharing site! ). All in all thats 700+ songs I need to transfer, not to mention the 50+ playlists I have.... Any help would be very much appreciated!

The easiest way is to backup your library to an external drive, then restore that backup to the new machine.
See this User Tip for a suitable backup tool. As long as all the media is inside the iTunes Media folder which in turn is inside the main iTunes folder then the library can be restored to any location with enough room. If the media has been split out into one or more alternate locations then to successfully restore the library all the media must be restored to identical paths to those it was backed up from. You can use the same tool to restore the library to the new machine.
After confirming that your library is working properly on your new machine you should deauthorize the old one if you no longer need to access protected content on it.

  • Moved iTunes library, forgot to backup playlists...

So, I had my iTunes on an external hard drive but decided to upgrade my MacBooks HDD and migrate the library to that (makes traveling easier).
Every file is moved now....except, I goofed and didnt do anything for the playlists.
i have read about the xml files and all that, moving them/copying them from the old files to the new, and I am pretty sure I've done all that correctly. shut down and restarted itunes to see if it helped, and still no playlists.
is there something else i can do? i thought maybe building a new account and setting up that itunes instance to use the old itunes location could bring it back and help out, but that didn't seem to work. would be nice to not need to kill myself building new playlists....

Ok googlers from the future, here is the sultion I used.
This solution puts everything back to normal with minimal work, but it costs you however much disk space is on your ipod. I downloaded the copytrans suite off the piratebay. Then I used the ipod copy to back up my ipod. This will copy things to folders based on tags. So you have to have a second copy of your music. Once it is backed up remote the itunes library files from the top folder of the itunes library. Start itunes, and then go to import playlist. Then you select the xml file from your ipod backup. This will import the entire library into itunes. When you sync your ipod it will say iit is going to delete everything and reload it, but it doesn't. If there was stuff that was no in the library it would delete it, but there won't be because the library came from your ipod to being with. So it just copies anything to it that wasn't there, if there is anything.
From that point, when you want to add stuff to your library/ipod, you have to put a copy of the music in the library you made. So all the music you want on your computer and your ipod will take up double space on your hard drive because you have to put a copy in the library folder. Once it is there, you just go to add folder and select your library folder. THis will make it rescan and put the new songs in the database.
The good part of this is you don't have to do selective ipod loading. You make the selection when you copy to the library folder. So at that point you just sync your ipod making an exact copy.
That was the best solution for me anyway, with a big library and lots of playlists. I also never use itunes. The sole purpose of having itunes is to load my ipod. My ipod I use daily though. I don't drive anywhere without it connected to my stereo. Being able to select anything in a massive music library from my head unit while driving around is seriously awesome.

  • Moved library to new hard drive, iPod no longer communicates

Ok, I am computer savy but know next to nothing about iTunes as I don't use it, but my wife does use it. However, my wife is not computer savy.
My wife's old hard drive started dying (on a Dell laptop), so we bought a new one and moved all her files over. However, she now has 2 problems:
    (1) She cannot use any of the old music files. I read around online, and I have discovered that we need to consolidate the old files from the old HD into a flash drive using the iTunes consolidate library function. Then they can be imported to the new library on the new computer. This is doable as the old drive is not yet completely dead.
    (2) However, she has since purchased/downloaded new songs out of the iTunes store onto the new HD, and thus I need to keep the new HD's library intact or we'll lose the files. *Now the big problem: her iPod will not connect to the new iTunes library.* I assume this is because iPods sync with a particular library, not a particular computer, and the library of the old computer was not properly transferred. Thus there is a new library, that contains songs we don't want to lose, but we can't connect the iPod.
Please help! How do we transfer the old "library" settings that allow the iPod to be synced without completely deleting the existing library on the new hard drive?
    Thanks.
OS is Windows 7 and new HD's iTunes version is 10.0.0.68.

How did you go about this move?
The correct way to do it is
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you still have the original library it might be worth trying again.

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
    Assuming a Managed Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
