Moved library to an external and can't locate files

I moved my library from my laptop by copying the whole itunes folder to my external and then choosing the library in the new location when opening Itunes. This seemed to work fine. So I tried ripping a cd and found that the resulting files didn't go to the new external, but back to the C drive (old location). I then changed the import music location (under edit/preferences/advanced) to the new external location and then consolidated to it. I then deleted my original files on my C drive. Now, any song I select to play can not be located and requires manual location. I have about 40,000 songs and I'm starting to freak out. I really don't want to lose my playcounts, lists, and ratings.
Any help would be wonderful!
Thanks.

Try using iTunes Folder Watch to work out where iTunes "thinks" your missing files should be. Generally the whole iTunes folder is portable provided that all the media is inside the *iTunes Music/iTunes Media* folder which in turn is in the folder where the *iTunes Library.itl* file is stored. If you don't start off with this layout then iTunes won't track files when you move the folder.

I can't access half of my downladed music. I get a message, "can't locate file." I dauthorized my computer and reloaded itunes, but it did not help. Any suggestions? Thank you.

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

You definitely need to resurrect the old password associated with the Apple ID you used to purchase the music.
    Go here: https://iforgot.apple.com
An email will be sent to the email address associated with that account with instructions regarding resetting that Apple ID's password.
If you no longer have access to that email, the resolution to this problem becomes considerably more difficult. In that event you would need to contact iTunes Support and explain your dilemma.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that you have a SATA controlled hard drive. Apparently, there's some kind of bug with SATA disks and Vista and Quicktime/itunes video...and possibly Nvidia is involved as well.
The workaround is sticking the video on a flash drive in order to play it (because that avoids the SATA controller and thus bypasses the issue). It's a crappy workaround, IMO...and I'm not spending another cent on iTunes videos until the issue is actually fixed.

  • Moved library - poof, missing songs and data

I recently purchased an external drive to hold all my music and free up some of that precious internal drive space. (Link to drive at bottom.)
I moved the whole iTunes folder to the external drive, redirected iTunes to use the library on the external drive and everything worked just fine.
Then, several hours later 90% of the music was gone. Poof. Literally there one minute and gone the next. The external drive is an NAS drive so I can log onto it via a web browser. Doing that I could see that the data was still on the drive because the corresponding amount of space was marked as "Used." But via Finder, I (and iTunes) could only see 10% of the music.
I reformatted the drive and recopied all my music onto it a second time. Everything worked great. Then, the next day, all the iTunes database files from within the iTunes folder disappeared (all of the music was still there this time).
I've contacted the drive mfg (LaCie) but their very first reaction was say this was all iTunes' fault and not their problem to solve. I told them that I followed proper iTunes procedures and am still waiting to hear back.
While I'm waiting, I was wondering if anyone knew if this is a known iTunes problem, if anyone else has had this problem or if there's some trick anyone knows to fix this.
    Thanks a lot.
    damien.

I really hate saying this but itunes seems more like a Microslop program than an Apple program. Every version gets buggier and buggier all the time with no fixes, just another crappy version that makes the previous one be better.
I haven't had much success in finding what it is that itunes looks for when it rejects the said file. I thought maybe it would be silence or scratchy sounds but it seems to be rather vague. Only thing I have found to do is create a "reburn" playlist, burn the list to disc, delete files and re-import. Or simply redo the disc import.

  • Problems moving library from old external drive to new one

I keep all my music on an external hard drive connected to my laptop at home. I am now spending several months away from home, and couldn't take my external drive with me.
I planned to handle this by using iTunes backup feature to put my whole library on DVD, then buy a new external hard drive to take with me, and sse iTunes backup feature to rebuild the library on the new external HDD.
However, I can't get the library to restore/re-load/re-import from the backup DVDs. The iTunes backup/restore instructions tell you to open iTunes then insert the backup DVD. When I do that, I get the following error message:
"The Disc "Backup2007-07-09" cannot be read. An unknown error occurred (-69)."
However, I can read the DVD using just going through My Computer, so I really don't believe it's a problem with the disc.
So, if this backup method isn't working, how can I re-create my library on the new hard drive? I have dozens and dozens of playlists, a lot of them smart playlists that depend on such things as play count, rating, and date added, so i really need to keep all my tags.
I thought of two possible work-arounds.
Plan A: Copy all the music myself (ie, not using iTunes) onto the new external hard drive, using the same filename and path as they had on the old external hard drive, then import the Library.itl file that's on the backup DVD (manually copying over the default one created by iTunes).
Would that work? The big annoyance of this plan, I should add, is that, looking at the files on the backup DVD, i can see that iTunes added a number behind each folder name (ie, "01 Al Green") and behind each album title (ie, "01 Al Green - Greatest Hits"). It seems to me I would have to go through and manually delete all the numerals in both artist and album names in order for the .itl file to point to the right place. That would take hours...
Plan B: (Really not a great plan, but I'm grasping here...)
Give up on the backup altogether. Keep adding music and podcasts to my library as is. All my music that is sitting on my far, far away home HDD will get the exclamation point next to it in iTunes. Then, when i try to sync the ipod, if i'm thinking this through right, iTunes will go ahead and add the new stuff to my ipod, but all the old stuff will just not copy over, and then at the end of syncing i'll get the error message to the effect of "itunes didn't copy song x because the file could not be found." This option is far from ideal, as my playlists won't update, but at least i'll still have the playlists.
Do either of these sound like they would work?
    Any other suggestions?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

If you can you connect both external drives to the computer at the same time, it would be easier to use the "Consolidate Library" utility in iTunes to move (actually copy) your media to the new drive.
1- Open iTunes preferences and select the Advanced tab. Change the location of your iTunes music folder to a location on your new drive. Also select the options "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library". Close the preferences dialog.
2- On the iTunes menu, select Advanced/Consolidate Library. This will gather all your media and copy it to the new location (the folder you designated in step 1).
3- After the consolidation is complete, verify that your music still plays, and check "Get Info" on some items to verify that iTunes is looking at the new location.
4- Optional. Delete the original files on your external drive. Do this only if you are certain that everything copied over to the new drive.
5- Optional. Close iTunes and locate your "iTunes Library.itl" file. This is typically in your iTunes folder, which may be on your computer's drive and not the external drive. Move this file to somewhere on your new external drive. Next, hold the Shift key as you launch iTunes and you'll be prompted to "Create Library" or "Choose Library". Select "Choose Library" and navigate to where you put the "iTunes Library.itl" file. This is a one-time step that tells iTunes where to boot the library from.

  • Moved Library between PC's and now Itunes is causing the Pc to shut down.

    Hi Guys,
sorry this is going to be such a long post but I typed all this out for an apple tech e.mail and they have referred me here. I don't want to type it all again so I've cut it from my original message. In addition to the info below to be clear, I have un-installed and re-installed a couple of times to try and resolve the issue but it's not worked. The machine seems rock solid playingDVD's and the same media files in windows media player.
I can only think it has something to do with the way in which I have transferred my library (Unless it is a hardware fault but It seems stable doing everything else!) I've also deleted all the previous iTunes librarys that came when I ported my files across to the new machine. I'm lost, hope you can help. I think the key is in the event log error messages but I'm not tech enough to understand what I'm being told. Sorry.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Comments:
I have just transferred my iTunes library from one pc to a new one which will be used as our house media PC. I did this via a network switch.
After downloading iTunes and insytalling i have added my library by "File/Add folder to library" and selected iTunes music folder.
iTunes store works ok but if I try and browse my music collection after 3 or 4 mouse clicks in iTunes library mode the software switches my PC off. The machine is stable under all other applications, it is only in the library that this problem occurs. The shutdown has no warning, it's much like the plug has been pulled.
i have checked the event log and the following messages are present after every crash. Oddly, windows does not detect the crash and the PC re-starts without any blue screens, warnings or prompting for safe mode.
    This:

Following the link takes me to the Microsoft Knowledge base but it yields nothing.
iTunes and this library is still functioning on the original PC without a hitch. The library does include 5 albums I bought and downloaded from iTunes, I tried authorising the PC incase it was related but it still crashes.
I assume it must be something to do with the library transfer or the way i have done it. i have not yet mated my ipod with the new machine, is this relevant?
Two other errors relating to iTunes show up in the event log which I will paste below however, iTunes has cause the PC to crash bothe before, and after these events.

  • When my ipod is plugged into my computer music disappears, sometime it tries to upload songs, clears my playlists, and can't locate the songs files. All the same songs are in my Itunes library on my computer. What can i do?

When I plug my Ipod into my computer it shows all my songs on it as reloading onto the device,
and sometimes it can't locate the files or they are just gone. All my songs are in my Itunes library
on my computer, and I do have it in my settings not sync the Ipod with my computer so I can
manage the content myself. It has happened multiple times.
I have cleared my Ipod off as well as my computer, and put all the music back on without seeing
any improvement. And as of today when I tried again it shows some songs on there but with 3 copies
of the same song trying to upload onto my ipod. And have of my playlist where empty. I am getting

  • ITunes forgets library, loses previous ones and won't rename files

Ok so had it up to here with some unimaginably bad software design in the last couple of weeks.
Order of issues: I updated iTunes, which is now on 10.1.0.56 (btw I can't get it to update to iTunes 11 as it says that the server cannot be contacted).
On reopening iTunes my library had disappeared. I searched online, found all the stuff about bringing in your previous iTunes library, except there is no folder named 'Previous iTunes libraries' in my iTunes folder. Also, I am aware that the issue may have been caused by AVG, which I have now updated so hopefully that will prevent it happening again.
So I just imported all the files into iTunes again, hoping that it will have updated all the tags for the 60gb+ worth of music, and would just put all that info back.
Instead, it turns out a whole load of music is incorrectly named, failing to pick up folder tags which are actually attached to the files (example: 8 Springsteen albums compiled into 1 'unknown album' folder, despite the fact that the files themselves are all correctly tagged with the albums.)
Going into the file structure, I've noticed that all these files were moved out of their folders and into
So I selected said set of albums and asked iTunes to get the track info, but iTunes told me that it can't find information for songs not imported using iTunes - I'm pretty sure most of them were in fact imported using iTunes though. Even if they weren't, the tags are there, but iTunes won't read them.
So as I said I have about 60gb worth of music on this computer and it's now a mess - is there ANY way out of this which doesn't involve a few days of my life spent changing things in iTunes? I know the easy way would have been moving the previous library but seeing as this doesn't actually exist... Help!

To clarify, currently on the 2TB external drive are music and videos. I want to split them up and hopefully save some space - and maybe foresee problems in the future when I hit max capacity on the 1TB external, and think about a 4GB (not the best option I see at this time) or another 2 2TB drives.
Doesn't the Library file just save locations when iTunes closes down so everything should be OK? I mean, the prog can recognize everything, it just won't download to anything, even if I move from the external drive an older movie to the new drive, it refuses to "see" the movie so I can download it.

  • Big fat library mess: duplicates / can't locate files / etc.

    Hi,
I have several issues. Failed to find my answers online in forums here. Help requested.
Recently migrated from another Mac. Moved library manually. 2 issues going on.
    1. In the actual media folder where the songs are stored, each artist>album folder has duplicate song files (ending in 1.mp4). These duplicates need to be cleaned up in bulk and mass deleted.
    2. I successfully exported my old playlists and reimported them into new system and they show up fine in iTunes. When I click on one of the tunes though I get the familiar "song could not be used because original file could not be found" and the ! icon appears. This is a commonly discussed issue. However common solutions don't seem to apply.
When I click "locate" from this dialog box and manually go to the tune, it plays fine after that. So then, how can I do this for the entire library to avoid doing this 1200 times?
These common solutions don't seem to be the best path.
    1. Consolidating library. Library location is already pointing correctly inside of preferences.
    2. Opening itunes while holding down option key. When I do this, and then select "Choose library" and navigate to my media folder, I get a notice that the "itunes library file" can't be found.
Any more solutions out there? Why do I hate itunes file mgt. so much? I'm actually a technical person. Have wasted hours on this.
As a nuclear option... Is there a way I can uninstall itunes completely and start from scratch?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    1. In the actual media folder where the songs are stored, each artist>album folder has duplicate song files (ending in 1.mp4). These duplicates need to be cleaned up in bulk and mass deleted.
[Dougscripts|http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/scriptcount.php?sortBy=Name&o p=y] - Many itunes scripts, including various ones for dealing with duplicates in various forms. The best way is not to just handle them in bulk form. I have some "duplicates" that are really very different versions of the same work by the same artist and I would not want them automatically deleted on this basis. Some of my duplicates are also the same track on different albums, and again I need both copies in order to keep both albums intact.
    2. I successfully exported my old playlists and reimported them into new system and they show up fine in iTunes. When I click on one of the tunes though I get the familiar "song could not be used because original file could not be found" and the ! icon appears. This is a commonly discussed issue. There isn't a single simple solution to this. Solutions follow two paths. One is to get your old library working (which you seem to have tried). The other is to simply create a new library and start all over again, losing some things such as playlists, play counts, ratings in the process.
As a nuclear option... Is there a way I can uninstall itunes completely and start from scratch?
Are all your music files in pretty much one folder or series of folders? If they are you could just start itunes with a new, blank library by holding down the option key, then drag all your files to the library window.

OK,great! Lets work on the iPad now. What happens when you open Revel on th ipad and you log in? Have you tried logging out and back in or reinstalling and logging in?
What do you see? Can you see your libraries? Can you see your albums? Can you see photos?
Did you already have a Revel account when your files were migrated?  If you did not, then the photos would move to <YOUR FIRST NAME HERE>'s library. IF you already had an account  with an existing library and photos, then migrated files would be moved to a library named "Photoshop.com library". To change libraries on the iPad, go into Settings, if on iOS or Mac.

My guess is they don't care. Most likely they're illiterate and don't know what a colon is for. They probably think it's a little-used character. Remember: these are the people who don't know the difference between "deprecate" and "depreciate".
I have the same colon problem as you do. But it's not the biggest problem I have encountered in Lion. If it was only that I'd be Mr. Delighted with Lion. There's worse than having a colon - uh -  that won't cooperate. A lot worse, in Lion.

  • Missing files (B to I) and can't play files MKV, MP4, or AVI

I just purchased a brand new WD media centre, and it keeps hiding files between B and I.  I've reset it as per the instructions, but I have to reset it every single time I use it, which is driving me insane.  I've stopped connecting to the network now as adding in the password two or three times a day is infuriating. Tonight it's stopped playing AVI, MKV, or MP4 files, so I have a brand new, $200 lump of useless plastic. What can I do with this, other than set it on fire?
