Moved media to TC. Now itunes keeps changing default library location

I realize this might be better suited in the iTunes discussion forum however...
I recently purchased a time capsule and moved all my media to the new drive. I changed the default library location in preferences. Problem is, every time I quit and relaunch iTunes, the default library location reverts back to my old location on my mac. Any ideas how I can get iTunes to remember my new default location? It's as if it's picking up a location file somewhere that is telling it to create a new library on my mac's hard drive.
Thanks for any input.

I don't have a TC but I also keep my iTunes library on an external Firewire drive and the following is the behaviour. Maybe it's so for you too:
• When the firewire drive is mounted on the desktop and I open iTunes, iTunes will link back to the library on the firewire drive.
• When the firewire drive is unmounted and I open iTunes, iTunes preferences will revert the library to default back to the internet drive.
• BUT, when I remount the firewire drive, and open iTunes again (after it's been closed), iTunes preferences will automatically go back to linking the library on the firewire drive.
So in short: when unmounted, iTunes links music library to the original default which is the internal drive. When mounted, iTunes will automatically relink music back to the firewire drive.
Does it work like so for iTunes on Time Capsule?

  • How do I stop Itunes from changing my library location

Is there just no answer to what should be a simple setting change?? No matter what I do, Itunes insists on changing my library location the instant there's any problem talking to my network share where all of my music is. This is absolutely ridiculous because this is on a laptop and there are times when the network connection is just not up yet, or whatever. Then it takes 10 minutes for me to change it back and let it figure everything out again. Has anyone ever been able to resolve this? I'd rather Itunes just return an error that tells me it can't read my library than to change it on me....

Have struggled with this issue in the past. In my experience, there is no simple, painless solution. I attempted to transfer my entire internal drive to my new external where there were copies of all the songs in place. Check to see how your library is organized on your network drive. Is it by media content (e.g. separate folders within /users/music/itunes/ folder such as Music, TV Shows, Movies, etc.)? Or are the various media types all lumped within a single iTunes Music Folder? If there is a discrepancy between your internal and external Library configurations iTunes struggles to cope. Can't say why this is  the case, but I found that the only solution was to throoughly uninstall itunes via terminal (or using an app such as 'Amnesia'), reinstalling iTunes, and creating the library from scratch using files that are located on the external/network drive. I'm a moderately savvy programmer and I couldn't for the life of me get iTunes to build my library from an XML playlist that I modified to reflect the changed directory location of the new library on  my external, but if you are more competent and patient than I am I'm convinced that the proper alteration of the Master library build would result in a seamless relocating of you media library as far as itunes is concerned. One last thing, make sure you click the 'I'll Add files myself later' option if you do choose to reinstall itunes just to cover your bases. sorry i can't give you a more helpful response--iTunes is a cruel mistress sometimes.

  • ITunes 5 Changes Music Library Location to Default

ITunes 5 Developers - you might want to check your code somewhere, because installing iTunes5 via Software Update meant my library location randomly changes back to the default, instead of just using the location I had set in iTunes 4.x
(I wondered why my playlists were showing Exclamation Marks everywhere).
I use an external firewire disk to store my music as the internal 80Gb drive isn't big enough to store my CD collection in AAC160.
    Mark.

    Mark hello,
It is a trap many fall into... the 'Location Pointer' as it has become known does not do that... what it does do is tell iTunes where to put the next song you 'import' (rip) into your library and if that Location is not available iTunes will set it to the home iTunes Music folder by default when it starts up.
In your case the program must be trying to access the Ext.hard disk and is not finding it straight away hence it follows the default ruling and resets the 'Location' to home iTunes Music folder... why ? ... not up to speed when iTunes starts.... bad connection to name a couple...
A bit more on the Location of files...
You can store music files anywhere as long as iTunes knows about it... how does it know ?... it gets that information when you 1st put them in the library file... if the music files get moved iTunes may lose track of them and you will have to tell iTunes where they are... now you may think why can't iTunes just find them... as you can have absolute identical files stored elsewhere how would iTunes know which ones to add... the rule is: if you move them tell iTunes about the move.
The way Music files are stored has been changed recently ...
iTunes for Mac OS X uses the file's HFS+ FileID (inode number) rather than the /path/to/filename to locate the file where ever it is moved on the same volume; the file's inode number remains constant.
Although not fully recommended you can now move things around on the boot vol. and iTunes and OS X will keep track of it all but the same senario does not yet exist for other media like Ext. HD's... so there, do not move anything without telling iTunes about the move.
HTH Mark let's know if you need more help .... TP

  • Lightroom keeps changing default import location; how to set it once and for all?

    Hi all,
I'm on a mac, and coming from iPhoto. After migrating to Lightroom, I made is so my photos imports from my camera into "/Pictures/LightroomMasters/year/month/day".Now, suddenly, I noticed that they end up in "/Pictures/year/month/day".
I really want Lightroom to keep importing everything inside the "Lightroom Masters"-folder, without me clicking to that location everytime I attach my camera. But going through the Preferences, and Catalouge-settings, I can not find the equivalent of "Default import location". Is there such a setting? Or is Lightroom meant to remember where is imported to last, and keep on using that?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andreas

It seems to remember the folder structure on my system. But I'm running Windows 7. I just tested it by inserting a memory card and importing the images on it, I don't connect cameras to my computer, to my E drive and to a folder named Pictures 2015. I had LR place these images in a sub-folder of that Picture 2015 with the date in the format of 20150201 and which these picture were taken on the 30th of January so the folder was 20150130. I then closed LR and reopened it and took some more shots around the house and then imported those. LR import dialog went right back to that E drive \Pictures 2015 folder and placed those newer images in a folder named 20150201.
So it remembered which drive and which top level folder it was supposed to. Not sure it it would work with a secondary sub-folder under the Pictures 2015 folder.
To be honest I rarely use the import from memory card feature of LR. I don't care for the naming conventions it offers. I do use the Adobe Photo Downloader applet that comes with PS Bridge as the naming convention in that creates sub-folders with just the month and day in this format 0201. I don't need the year tacked on to the front of that sub-folder name, although it can do that, as I store all my images by years to begin with. Then I import to LR from those folders the APD app creates.
If you are using more than one camera it might remember for each camera so from now on it will go back to the right folder.

  • ITunes keeps asking for Library location

For some reason, iTunes can only find my library automatically the first time after a restart (of my MacBook), and works perfectly for the rest of the time I have it open until, obviously, I quit iTunes. Also another annoyance is that it's still a freakin' Carbon app, just like Finder. Any help here?

Ah, never see it happening anymore...... must be the 10.5.3 update.....

    See the not-charging topic of:

    Have you tried another cable?
Another charging source? Does iTunes see the iPod when you connect to your computer?
Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, foreign material and cracked or broken plastic.

I customize my genres, etc. but iTunes keeps changing it back. How do I stop this?

    Hi dfrost10,
I wouldn't be surprised if you were hit with some [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Is%20my%20Firefox%20problem%20a%20result%20of%20malware?s=malware&r=0&e=sph&as=s#w_how-do-i-get-rid-of-malware Malware]. I'd probably investigate that first.
If that isn't the case, you should take a look at the Knowledge Base article [[How to set the home page]]. Your homepage might have been changed by a particular site. Sites like MSN, Yahoo, etc have been know to ask to become your homepage.
There are steps in that article to reset your homepage preferences to default. I would try that first to clear out any strangeness. If that works, you can try setting your homepage again to your personal preference.
If that doesn't work you should look at the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved Preferences not saved].
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Upgraded to iphone 4 and now itunes keeps opening up on my HP computer all the time?

I upgraded to iphone 4 & now itunes keeps opening up on my hp. I turned off find my iphone from an article I seen on here, but the problem still continues. Help please advise.

okay. it is very easy. just kill your itunes application (it will not uninstall or pemanantly remove it from your compter.) just open task manager to open it, (for vista and 7) click start->search ''run''->then in the run window, type ''taskmgr''. (and for xp) click start->run->type ''taskmgr''
in the task manager window(for both xp, vista and 7), go to applications tab, then click itunes, then click end process button. if there is not any itunes option in the applications tab, click processes tab, cick itunes.exe, then click end process (or) right cick itunes.exe and click end process.
one thing to note. if you are syncing your iphone and you are trying to kill itunes, it would be a problem so don't do it. to open itunes again, just click in the shortcut or icon you used to open it.

  • ITunes keeps losing my library every 2-3 days!

iTunes keeps losing my library every 2-3 days. Completely erasing all songs and playlists. This is incredibly annoying and forces me to redo it all AGAIN.
Any way for me to solve this problem?

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.

  • Changing the Library Location

Because my computer is old and running out of disk space, I purchased a 250gig portable hard drive and moved all my photos and music to it for permanent storage. I have another portable hard drive for backups.
In iTunes I went to Preferences > Advanced and changed the Library location to the new iTunes Music folder on my portable hard drive. I noted the original location first and made sure I followed the same pattern, getting all the way down to the needed folder. But when I open iTunes the next time, I didn't have any music listed.
I didn't have time to mess with it this morning before work but I'm wondering how to fix this problem. Do I need to tell it to add a Library somehow?
    Thanks for any input.

    Followed the instructions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
I've completed the move - from my iMac's internal hard drive to an external drive and everything is working fine. No worries or problems.
Now, the big question. On my computer's internal hard drive, I still have a the following folders
    [myusersname]/Music
this folder contains every single artist and song in my iTunes
This same folder also contains a folder
    [myusersname]/Music/iTunes
which, in addition to several other items (including the all important iTunes Library and Album Artwork folders) also contains another folder named
    [myusersname]/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
which also contains every single artist and song in my iTunes.
Now that "everything" is moved over to the external hard drive, can I delete either the
[myusersname]/Music folder (leaving the abovementioned iTunes folder intact to keep from deleting the subfolder)
    or also delete the
    [myusersname]/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
I'm hoping to free up space on the internal hard drive.

  • How to change the library location because i don't have enough memory in my internal hard disk

can i change the library location because i don't have enough memory in my internal hard disk

    Hi ahmedmagdyelrasheedy,
It is not clear what library you are trying to move, but if you are running out of space on your internal hard drive the most likely culprits are your iTunes music and your iPhoto library. Either of these can be moved to an external hard drive making room on the internal.
For the iPhoto library see this article -
iPhoto: How to move the Library folder to a new location
To move the iTunes music see this article -

  • ITunes keeps changing to the default folder location

I have no idea what's going on here, but, it's getting very frustrating.
Here's the situation: I am running the latest version of iTunes (11.whatever) on Windows 7, and my default iTunes Library location is in My Music on my C:. Unfortunately, my C: is a tiny SSD, and I don't want all of my content going in there, since there's no room. I have two other internal hard drives that I use for file storage, and I want to relocate my library to one of these drives. These drives are not external, they are not networked, they are just regular, plain old drives that boot along with the computer.
I have tried following the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
But, I had no luck with it. When I follow these steps, I open up iTunes, I turn on the "Keep iTunes Organized" option as stated, then press OK. Then I change the file location (in Advanced, under Preferences) to the place I want the library to reside, on a different drive. After pressing OK, I go to File, Library, and choose Organize Library (checking off the "Consolidate Files" option). After this completes, I try to delete the original iTunes library in My Music on C:, but, it won't let me, telling me the file is still in use. After closing iTunes, I am able to deleted it. Then, when I open iTunes again, it just completely ignores the folder that I created and moved everything to, makes a new folder in My Music, and goes back to default settings like nothing ever happened.
I've seen a lot of people complaining about this problem when trying to set up their libraries on networked or external drives, but, that is not my issue. Any help would be appreciated, and please let me know if I can provide any more information.
    Thanks!

    Hi
First post so do not shoot me down if I break some rule here but as I was getting the same issue, V Frustrating i know, I thought I would post my solution.
Felix, above pointed me in the right direction but I did this
After following the steps from Dr Von Smith I closed iTunes
Went to the old C drive location
    Moved the
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Library.xml
    iTunes Music Library.xml
    and the Album Artwork
to the new location on my D drive
Held shift and clicked on iTunes icon
it asked me for library location so I pointed it to the new location on D
    Closed iTunes
Opened iTunes nomally and the Preferences > Advanced > location has held
Time will tell but at least it seems to be sticking now....

  • ITunes keeps changing file locations to something wrong when syncing

I have my music stored on a Synology DS409 NAS which is mounted using afp as /Volumes/music. I also have another mount from the same NAS as /Volumes/photo. Whenever I try syncing my iPhone or an iPod, I get errors about some files not syncing because they could not be played.
On looking at some of these files in iTunes using Get Info, the location has been changed from its original (correct) /Volumes/music/xx to some random picture file under /Volumes/photo/xx
I know the original file was correct because I've checked the iTunes Library xml file for any occurrence of "photo" and found none before syncing. I can manually fix the errors by deleting them items from iTunes and re-adding them, but I then get more errors on different files when syncing next.
I used to have the iTunes server feature turned on on the Synology DS409, but I've turned that off now. I wondered whether it was down to the /Volumes/music file system disappearing occasionally (another issue!) but it has happened even when the music folder is mounted. Very frustrating!
As a last resort, I could copy the music on to the local disk in my iMac, but that defeats the point of the NAS really. It should work.
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks

Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and continue to hold down the SHIFT key. This dialog should appear:
If iTunes opens normally close it and try again. Use Choose Libraray... to open the copy of your library on the external drive. Check the location of the media folder once opened. You can now remove the iTunes folder on C: without it reappearing.

  • Absolutely Furious that iTunes Keeps Changing details

I am using iTunes 12.0.1.26 on Windows 7.
I am absolutely furious with iTunes at the moment, I have tried all the answers I have seen online (turn off Sharing Library with iTunes and keping iTunes Media Folder Organised).
However, after sitting all weekend and twice going through genres and other information I have amended to make music easier to find, iTunes has still changed some of them back!
How is Bessie Smith, with Blues/Jazz songs recorded in the 30's classed as Dance Music? (I have twice now changed these songs to show they were recorded in the 30's and they should be in my genre Old Jazz), whenever I go into change the details (again for an individual track) I simply have to right click and "Get Info" and the data changes back again, this also happens if the track is played.
However, then when I exit itunes, or sometimes even switch views within iTunes the details change back to what iTunes wants them to be.
Will someone please help with this it is driving me mad. Especially after I have spent so long painstakingly organising my library of over 14,000 tracks.

To avoid metadata reverting to that downloaded from the Store (for Store purchases and if you have iTunes Match), you need to make sure that both these options in Edit > Preferences > Store are unchecked:
You'll need to exit and restart iTunes for changes to take effect.

  • ITunes keeps changing my settings

I have 109 books on my iPAD Air and I have iTunes set to "Sync all Books". But, every time I connect the iPAD to iTunes the settings change on their own to "Selected Books" and 81 of my books are erased from my iPAD. Then I have to change the setting back to "Sync all Books" and put them back on. Can someone please explain why the settings keep changing on their own? It's driving me mad! Steve C
