  • 875P Neo-FIS2R northbridge fan replacement

    hey guys...i am somewhat new here. I have browsed the board here and there. I am trying to make my computer quiter but have found that the northbridge fan is very loud. i have read where a lot people of just taken the fan off and left nothing else. this concerns me because i do overclock my computer and dont want extensive heat on the northbridge. i saw a post awhile back about someone found a heatsink tht would fit and replace the northbridge fan on this motherboard. i can not find that post or the type of heatsink. if anyone knows what heatsink will fit i would be grateful. thanks

  • MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R Northbridge fan too loud !

    I have a very quite system, but the Northbridge fan is too loud ! In fact it is the loudest element in my system and I'd like to replace it.

    I am really interested in this mobo - I've read the reviews on 7 different brands so far, and the MSI offering is in my mind "the duck's guts"!!
    I thought that I'd probably go the Asus prior to researching - no way - nasty setup if ya need a screwdriver to install a generic Intel HS&F!!
    The MSI takes the cake as far as desirable features goes, from what I've read to date.
    I have the money to get one of them, a 800Mhz FSB P4, and a Radeon 9800 Pro.............
    But................
    I'm in Australia.......
    We get the 1337 shite last on the shipping route, although we're closest geographically!!
    I need to know:
    1. Australian availability - distributers with actual stock!
    2. A few users' impressions of this mobo.
    3. er, the price (tho' if it's as good as it reads - who gives a fruck!!)
    4. Should I get the 2.4g, 2.8g, or 3.0g P4???
    5. Is there a particulat stepping to look for?
    6. Are they available in Australia?

    As you've probably guessed from my nick, I've been running AMD for quite some time - since the 1g/A7V133 days when they had the crown - it's been a downhill run since - just got rid of my XP2600+, after the 2nd Abit NF7-S's BIOS corrupted due to my 1g of Corsair XMS3500 - I mean, get stuffed! I'd already had to get a later revision.........3-4 days prior to them bringing out yet another revision!!

  • Replaceing NB fan with heatsink (875P Neo-LSR)

    I'd like people's opinion on wether or not you think a Zalman ZM-NB32J North Bridge Heatsink will be enough to replace the NB fan on an MSI 875P Neo-LSR. I would hate to damage the board.

    I have been using MSI boards for a year or so now and the northbridge hsf unit has yet to disapoint me. Do not bother replacing the NB HSF unless it does indeed fail as you will lose your warranty if you replace it.

  • 875P NEO northbridge fan

    Hi ,
    Wonder if anyone can help, I have an MSI NEO 875P Neo, Ive noticed however that whereas the Northbridge fan used to reach around 4000rpm its now maxing at about 3550rpm ?
    what rpm should the NB fan run at , if the temperature is cool does the mainboard automatically reduce the NB rpms ?  also I am using speedfan to monitor the temps
    If the NB fan is on the way out where can i get a decent replacement ?

    The board does not have an NB temp sensor, so if you use the NB temp to control the fan speed then it will be adjusted according to whatever stray voltage is on the terminals where the NB sensor should be. I used the CPU temp instead for regulation.
    If the fan fails, just remove it and leave the heat sink in place. The heat sink alone provides adequate cooling.

    Thanks for your reply however sorry, but  what do you mean by stray voltages ? if my rpms have gone down does this mean a problem with my voltages ?

  • Neo 875P has no extra fan or USB on-board slots?

    I have bought a case with case fans and USB... yet the MSI Neo 875 board gives me no extra power points for fans (one of them wants a board connection), nor any additional positions for USB.
    Is this usual practice, or unusual?  I bought a board a year or two ago without this problem (using the same case), so I didn't give it a second thought till the board arrived.
    Actually, I could steal the northbridge fan point, but then I'd need a passive cooling solution that would fit on that tiny chip.
    I would also use the USB slots provided for the USB silver thing... but the connectors are different (it uses a 10 pin connector with one missing, where as the case uses two five pin connectors).

    What version of 875P Neo board do you have?
    There are 3 fan connectors supplied - CFAN and NBFAN are used and include speed monitoring and PWM control. SFAN is merely for providing power to your system/chassis fan - no speed moniotoring nor PWM control.
    On the Neo FIS2R version, JUSB2 can accomodate additional 2 USB ports - either via a D-bracket towards the rear, or front case USB ports.
    Be VERY CAREFUL with the wiring as +5V and Gnd are NOT PROTECTED and could result in severe damage if misconnected.
    Generally, additional high-power fans would be manually controlled and have independent temp sensing (e.g. Thermaltake SmartFan2, etc...) These fans would come with a 3-pin connector and a 3-pin to 4-pin adapter that plugs to your other power supply connectors.
    Others suggest that the NB fan is of minimal thermal value, so you may disconnect the NBFAN and just removing the lightshow/fan leaving the heatink.
    In my case, as my NB fan and rear chassis exhaust fan were relatively quiet, I obtained 3-pin to 4-pin adapters and connected both to an AUX power connector.
    For my front fan, I used the NBFAN connector and use SpeedFan 4.08 to control its speed by monitoring HD temp (via SMART) and NB temp.

  • HELP: Cannot get 200GB Maxtior Drive to show up on system with 875P Neo board

    I just put together a system with a 875P Neo board, Intel 3.2Ghz HT Extreme Edition CPU, 32GB Scsi Drive on an Adaptec SCSI card, and two Maxtor Drives.  The First is a 120GB which set as the primary on IDE1 (DVD Reader & DVD Writer are on IDE2) and the second drive is a Maxtor 200Gb Drive set as the primary on IDE3.  When the system boots up It sees the 200GB on IDE3 as DMA6 and proceeds.  When I look at it in the Bios Setup the two DVD roms appear and the 120GB drive appears, nothing appears in the IDE3 slots.
    The system runs Windows XP off the the SCSI drive , which is derive letter C.
    I am running the 1.9 bios I downloaded a last week off the MSI web site.
    Have I set something wrong in the bios settings?
    I do not see the CPU listed as well.
    Any sugestions?  I am trying to avoid going out a buying an ATA/133 Ultra DMA IDE card.

  • 875P-Neo FIS2R v1.0 BIOS Problems

    Purchased PC in June w/875P-Neo w/1ea. 80G SATA, 2ea. 200G ATA-133 w/SATA Adapters as RAID 0, Windows Server 2003, NVidia TNT 32M AGP Video, Floppy, and Pioneer DVD-RW, using 2G Kingston DDR 400 Dual-Channel RAM.  PC in Box with 7 Case fans, and P4-2.8GHz 800FSB w/CNPS-7000 Copper Flower CPU Fan/HS.
    Once or twice per week W2K3 would lock up with basic desktop but no taskbar and no keyboard or mouse function (arrow moved, but that's all).  Tried all software and BIOS settings I could think of to no avail.  Downloaded and installed v1.6 from MSI and all seemed OK but as I was going through BIOS checking/changing settings as required my video would start jumping and dashes and underlines would appear randomly on screen.  Problem would get worse the longer I was in the BIOS setup.  I could not get W2K3 to boot after v1.6 so tried the recover process.  This appeared to work until I tried the re-boot after getting the 4 beeps.  Now all that happens is the BIOS wants to continuously recover from floppy beeping 4 times every time.  If I remove the floppy it would keep looking at the floppy drive forever, beeping once every now and then.
    I returned the PC to where I purchased it and they replaced the mainboard which seemed OK.  I had the tech flash the BIOS before bringing it home with 1.6.  After I got it home, I began getting the same behavior as before the recover process on the first MB (above).  I decided to see if I could get the system to take BIOS v1.4 since I have another computer with that version that is stable.  It worked!  So far the PC seems OK with v1.4 except I wanted some of the features in the new versions.
    What is going on with v1.6?  Have others had probems with this BIOS version?  Is v1.5 safe?
    BTW, I used the RAM Disk method of updating the BIOS everytime except during the recovery attempt.

    Actually everything is brand new as of June and all components are matched.  The Video is a 4X AGP (1.5v) and has worked fine before the v1.6 BIOS.  The tech that installed my replacement MB told me the BIOS version in the MB originally was v1.2, but I didn't actually see the screen from the original BIOS before it was updated.  What's strange is two boards behaved the same with v1.6.  I did get the new MB to settle down with v1.4 and I have another computer with the 875P-Neo and v1.4 working fine.
    Either v1.6 has issues or there is something unique about my configuration that it has problems with.  I don't dare update my other computer (that is configured differently) to find out.  I really want some input from someone at MSI or someone who has experienced similar results with v1.6 and this board.  I am hoping there is something with 1.6 that will be fixed in the next release.

  • [875P Neo Series] trouble shooting assistance

    I have a 875p neo with a pentium4 3.2ghz processor...i have a few diff profiles set up for gaming, normal use ect....the system booted up went to my selection screen for profile selection and hung up ...after a few minutes i shut it down and restarted now all i get is all the fans work including my video board ones theD Bracket lights all start as green and none change ....no beeps at all....im suspecting the processor is damaged...i do use a zalman pure copper heat sink for cooling ...other than that im guessing memory or video board...but memory id be supprised both sticks are bad at once and ive tried each seperately...im real supprised this has happened my system for the most part has been trouble free.....im using a gig of 3200 series kingston...a msi video board the 256 meg 5900 model... and a westen digital 80gig hard drive, sony cdrw...any suggestions would be appreciated

    i would not even try to power up the sys untill the psu is in place,if the cpu failed and needs a warranty replacement i dont think you will get any fuss out of intel,BUT you may have other problems looming that may appear at some time or another,lack of AMPERAGE {not voltage} can have a very  NEGATIVE affect on the sys as a whole,if it is a mobo failure you should be ok with that also,it just takes a long time during a RMA process since it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to complete each,mark it up to a learning experence,the PSU {imo} IS the most important piece of hardware that you or anyone will purchase for a computer !

    also the battery can have a bad contact which can cause a no post,also the psu connector pins can become dislodged and push back and cause arching {because of current jumping} that can be harmfull to the pins and sockets.

    After having significant difficulties with my new machine  
    I thought it may be helpful to others to  know how I fixed the Mother Board problems. I have the following configuration:
    875P Neo-FISR
    P4 3.02 GHz  478P 800fsb
    Two Geil PC 3200 400MHz 500mb DDR’s at positions 1 & 3
        ( CAS 2  6-3-3 1T; 2.6-2.9 V)
    Two Seagate 120 Gb 7200rpm SATA drives on Promise Raid 0
    Generic Cd Reader
    Pioneer DVD Writer DVRA05
    ATI 9700 Pro
    Aquarius Liquid Cooler
    Enermax Fan Monitor
    ( Addictions are bad )
    Open all the boxes and put everything together. Boots up once and then starts active unstable.
    Clear the CMOS and then it fails to post at all.
     No monitor at all.
    Looking at this web site I thought that putting the Aquarius Fan on the SFAN 1 slot may not be playing with CoreCell Chip well. Switched to the Enermax and it boots. Remains very unstable. Reading an email here I changed the DDR voltage to 2.7. System stable but I can’t get the Promise RAID to engage.
    Looked at another email ( Thanks Mr. K. Keenan)
     and set the BIOS as follows:
    Frequency / Voltage Control:
    CPU Ratio Selection:     Locked
    Dram Frequency :          AUTO
    Spread Spectrum :          DISABLED
    Adj. CPU BUS Clock:   230
    DDR Clock:                   460
    Adj. AGP/PCI Clock:     67.1/33.50

    DDR Power Voltage:      2.70   ( KK suggested 2.65)

    Everything stabilized.
    Start adjusting the Promise RAID settings (following M. Johnson’s advice)
    as follows in the BIOS:
    ON CHIP  IDE Configuration
    ON Chip ATA Operate Mode:      Native Mode
    ATA Configuration :                     S-ATA Only
    P-ATA Keep Enabled :                  YES
    P-ATA Channel Select :                BOTH
    S-ATA Ports Definition:                PO-1st/P1-2nd
    Configure S-ATA as Raid :            YES
    Back to
    INTEGRATED PHERIPHERALS
    ONBOARD Promise IDE:             as RAID
    Run Windows 2000 prof and it finds the array but can’t format ( ???)
    Tried formating with Millenium Boot disk ( Bad move).
    Windows ME won’t let Win 2000 boot.
    Clear CMOS and then the system dies.  
    Spent  days trying to get at least the monitor to fire with no luck.
    Reread web site and picked up on the Low Latency Memory issues noted
    in a note ( Thanks Mr. K. Keenan again). Put in some Kingston cas2.5
    333 DDR’s at 1 & 3 positions.
    Fires up immediately.
    Windows 2000 boots and loads. Totally stable.
    Never to be one that leaves well enough alone…
    Set the BIOS under
    ADVANCED CHIP FEATURES as follows:
    Under dram Timing Setting:
    Configure DRAM Timing by SPD :    Disabled
    Cas Latency:                      2
    RAS # Precharge                   3
    RAS # to CAS# Delay:              3
    Precharge Delay:                  6
    Burst Length :                    8
    AGP Aperture Size:               128 MB
    Shut down and replaced the 1GB ( 2 x 500) Geil DDR 400’s.
    Rock stable and faster.
    Evidently when you clear the CMOS, the board resets
    the DDR Power Voltage to 2.50 which is too low for
    some of the faster DDR SDRAM’s. Unless you put
    slower chips in you can’t adjust the bios to a higher voltage.
    I would love to know why MSI did that.

    Simply, when you use the jumpers to reset the BIOS all the settings, including the voltages, get reset to the default.  The default power setting for RAM is 2.5v, and I would assume that its difficult to find RAM that doesn't run at that voltage at least well enough to get into the BIOS.  What use would the jumper reset be if it only selectivly reset settings?
    Hi all,
    The system will reset the performance to Slow and the DDR ram timing to default by just 4 unsuccessful boot up.
    Meaning just press reset button for about 4 times and the system will boot with the default setting for the performance and RAM Timing.
    So I do not need to do jumper reseting or open the CPU casing.

    Hello all pros  :D.
    I'll start this off with the basics, my system specs:
    MSI 875P Neo-L (BIOS 1.6)
    Pentium 4 3Ghz HT CPU (Frequency locked)
    Zalman CNPS7000-AL CU cpu cooler (Artic Silver thermal grease)
    TwinMOS 512 MB PC3200 CL2.5 (2.5-3-3-8/auto) memory
    IBM DeskStar 75GXP IDE ATA100 HDD (attached to primary channel, master)
    Asus GeForce 4 Ti4800SE AGP 8X 128 MB DDR graphics card
    460W LePont/SuperFlower ATX P4-certified PSU
    Dual PAPST 12DBa 80MM case fans (intake & exhaust)
    Fong Kai FK-603 Midi-tower ATX case
    Keytronic standard Swedish-layout PS/2 keyboard
    Microsoft Intellimouse explorer 3.0 optical USB
    Windows XP SP1 Pro English
    Generic floppy drive
    I've used the following BIOS settings in my tests:
    Fail safe defaults and Optimized defaults
     - Tried to enable/disable: FDD Controller, HT, onboard LAN, with no effect on the problem. Other settings follows (different also tried): slow memory settings, 2.60-70V memory voltage, 128 MB AGP arperture size. All others standard.
    BIOS 1.6 runs the best, 1.7 has the same effect as all the other lower revs. The problem persists in 1.8 but also decreases system performance noticeably.
    The actual problem:
    The system refuses to boot up. In 40 cases the system boots once.
    The D-LED's signals either a keyboard controller init msg or AGP init msg, randomly.
    In the cases where the system does not boot, it does not either light the case front panel's power LED or signal any HDD activity (drive gets spun up due to poweron, etc).
    The system does not beep in any way when it refuses to boot correctly.
    I've tried changing the PSU for a enermax 430W one with no effect (voltages were ok with both), tried changed memory for some TwinMOS-winbond with no effect, tried changing graphics card for a MSI GeForce 4 MX 440 AGP with no effect, tried to boot without HDD attached with no effect, tried to use other PS/2 mouse and keyboard and without both without any effect, verified clock battery to be fully functional (tried with brand new battery also), removed and also replaced floppy drive with no effect, had machine unplugged for over 120 minutes without bios battery for total reset with no effect, tried to boot machine without AGP card at all - no error beep/change in D-LED info or likewise effect, tried to boot machine without RAM at all - no error beep/change in D-LED info or likewise effect.
    When the machine is operating CPU temperatures are within normal ranges (43-53 C) and the CPU does not throttle down the speed.
    Typical error flowscheme:
    System running -> I shut it down or choose reboot -> System powers down and fails to powerup with one of the above D-LED infos.
    ->
    I have to hold down power for 3-4 secs for the system to poweroff, then turn it on again and repeat 15-75 times until system boots up.
    ->
    BIOS settings checksum fails, press F1 and go into the bios to typically raise memory voltage and AGP arperture size.
    ->
    Machine shuts down when choosing save and fails to powerup.
    ->
    I have to hold down power for 3-4 secs for the system to poweroff, then turn it on again and repeat 15-75 times until system boots up. System runs fine until I have to do step one again.
    As you can guess this is becoming something of a problem.
    I got the motherboard & CPU from MSI via DHL delivery when I won a web-contest they had for the board when it was new so I have to send it all the way to Taiwan to RMA it according to my local MSI dealer (which would take 3-7 weeks and cost several hundred in postage with a secure delivery firm like DHL). As the computer is my bread and butter literally as I'm a student, this is not a good choice.
    As you can read above I've narrowed it down to be either the CPU or Motherboard with a 99.99% assurance, and I'm kind of betting it is the motherboard.
    So does anyone here have an idea what to do? I've read over 15 threads about this board and tried random suggested stuff for all kinds of problems with no effect to my situation.
    Any help at all would be greatly appriciated.

    I emailed MSI's support now once again with the same message I included in the top (and went through the autoresponder-resent procedure), no answer yet but we'll see if they get back to me this time. Otherwise I'm starting to doubt if I will ever get it sorted =/
    If so, is the Neo2 boards with the 865PE chipsets more or less as good, as I won't be able to afford one of those 875P Neo boards to replace my current one?

    I have just upgraded to this new MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R motherboard, and an Intel P4 2.4Ghz 800Mhz fsb chip. I am using an MSI G4 TI 4400 AGP Video card. When i power on the system the components and fans light up and run but i get nothing on the screen. I am using DDR 184pin PC266 512MB ram sticks x 2. I have replaced the board and come up with the same result. I have checked all the components in another machine and they all seem to work fine. WHat have i missed?

    ...800mhz FSB chips REQUIRE DDR 400mhz, 266 chips will NOT work, they cannot overclock to that speed.

  • 875P Neo with new Corecell DOT???

    I happened to see the new MSI875P NEO with a sticker with MSI new CoreCell chip with D.O.T (Dynamic Overclocking Technology).
    Can this be done with the BIOS?

    As the 875P Neo and the 865PE Neo2 are derived from almost the same design, I wouldn't be surprised if DOT comes to the 875P soon.
    It was first implemented on 865PE and should be possible through a BIOS update as the major components were already in place - the CoreCell chip and the freq & voltage adjustment settings.
    I wish MSI would drop the corny military ranks though and use a better technical analogy.
    Also, I think the voltage ranges they provide for Vcore, Vagp and Vmem are ridiculously extreme on one end, so maybe they should consider moving the ranges
    Also, fix those temperature readings for System and NB.
    But most importantly, give the option to fix the AGP/PCI clock!
