MOVED: MSI 990fxa-gd65 new build won't boot or post

This topic has been moved to MSI AMD boards.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=254558.0

Hi,
Post S/N of the motherboard and we are able to tell you (roughly) which BIOS version it has.
What if you try without graphics card?
Did you try to clear CMOS? --> >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
If it needs updating, you will either need:
-Supported CPU by current BIOS
-SPI programmer (some IT services has one)

Hi, any help with this issue would be most appreciated
I have just built a new system spec below:
    MSI 990fxa-gd65
    AMD FX8350
    2 x 4GB Hyper X fury DDR3 1866Mhz RAM
    MSI GTX960 Graphics card
    1TB WD HDD
Corsair HX1000w (recovered from an older machine and in full working order)
Unit powers ok, all fans are running, HD, Graphics card fans run and lights up DVD drive spins up OK too.
Motherboard has two cpu phase lights lit. There is no post beeps or video out.
I've tried it with a single stick of memory and a different lower spec video card but nothing seems to work. Some posts are suggesting the CPU may not be supported with the MoBo's current version of bios so questions are:
How can I find out the bios version and if it is compatible as it doesn't reach the bios screen?
If it needs updating how do you update it?

If the SSD is connected to a SATA-3 port you may need drivers to make Windows know about it.
Same for the RAID, but that one can be loaded after Windows is installed.

  • NF750-G55 New Build Won't Boot to DVD

I'm doing a rebuild of a system in which the old motherboard failed. This is only the second time I have done a build, so forgive any apparent ignorance. The following describes the system: Motherboard: MSI NF750-G55, CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 450, PSU: Hiper Type R MkII 880W, Case: Antec Three Hundred, Memory: Rendition by Crucial 1 X 4GB, Hard Drive: Seagate 400 GB, DVD: Samsung 22X SpeedPlus. Only the case, PSU and DVD come from the first build I did 18 months ago and were fine until the old MOBO failed.
The problem I'm encountering with the new MSI NF750-G55 is booting to the DVD so I can load Windows Vista onto the hard drive. The POST gives me a Bad CHKSUM error and directs me to bios setup. In setup, the Boot Sequence shows my DVD and hard drives as disabled and won't let me enable either.
I've uninstalled everything, cleared the CMOS and reinstalled everything five times. Nevertheless I am still getting the same error message and can't enable either  my DVD drive or hard drive. Therefore, I'm unable to successfully boot up and load windows onto the new hard drive.
I'm out of ideas and ready to return the MOBO to Newegg for another, but I would rather fix the problem. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can try next before I ask for an RMA?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide this newbie.

I've tried loading defaults (both optimized and fail-safe) in bios setup as well as by using F2 in the chksum error screen. All result in a screen that looks like this:
The text that is obscured in the upper part of the screen reads:
BTX loader 1.0 BTX version is 1.01
    Console: internal video/keyboard
Bios drive C: is disk 0
    Bios 636kB/2030208kB available memory
Once in that screen, the only way out is to unplug the PSU and reset the CMOS.
As I said before, I'm stymied and have no idea what to try next.

do not do this, just hit reset button then press F11 during BIOS post screen and boot from your optical drive.

  • New build won't boot -- start/stop/start/stop....

I just finished putting together my new lga2011 system. When I went to power up, the fans start for .5 seconds and then they shut down, after about 3 seconds, the fans start again for about .5 seconds and then they shut down. I removed and then reseated the memory. I unplugged all the cables to the case, still the same result.
    What am I doing wrong?

    I would check:
-Is your heatsink/CPU fan sit properly , (thinking to overheating, cooling paste problems etc...)?
-Leave only one Ram stick and try to boot
-Is your MB, Processor and GC properly powered?
-Check for any short between the MB and the case.
(Remove the MB from the case and start it outside)
-Did you have any trouble installing the processor?
    -Try to reset CMOS.
It's all what I see for now.

  • MSI 990FXA-GD65 + AMD FX-6300 + 16GB 1866MHz RAM Won't Boot

    Hello,
Today I received parts for my new gaming system (sans water cooler, using the stock heatsink+fan until then), however I'm experiencing problems with the setup.  The specs are as follows:
    - MSI 990FXA-GD65
    - AMD FX-6300 CPU
    - GSKILL 16GB (2x8GB) 1866MHz DDR3 RAM
    - Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB SSD
    - 2x MSI GeForce GTX 660 Ti
    - EVGA NEX750B1 PSU
    - BitFenix Comrade case
Upon powering on (after assembly), the Phase Indicator only has the first two LEDs lit up (Phase 2 Power Mode, according to the manual).  No output is displayed on screen.  I've tried removing and re-inserting the CPU and removing one of the graphics cards, to no avail.
I would appreciate any help/advise that could be offered, that I might get this system up and running!
    Kind Regards

Try to run this system out of the case on non conductive area (e.g. plain cardboard) with 1 stick of RAM only, 1 GPU (try without any graphics cards too), single HDD/SSD, PSU of course, CPU+cooler and monitor+keyboard and mouse. When booting spam Delete and it should take you to the BIOS where you have to change timings of RAM suggested in the post about GSkill memory.
If possible, borrow different brand of RAM to test your PC with.
Make sure that if you're running single GPU, that video cable is connected to the card. If no GPU, then to the motherboard.

  • Msi 990fxa-gd65 vrm burned , refused rma :(

Hello firstly a happy x-mas to everyone
Let me state my story i bought msi 990fxa-gd65 and amd fx-8120 bulldozer cpu a few weeks back.
i installed it and it ran was very happy for 2 days , then it happened... , seems the vrm's burned !
let me explain you why i think was a faulty board.
when it did ran it gave 1.37volts to cpu at idle , stock 3.1ghz turbo disabled, was all ready high for me , but i thought i will try newer bios later , as wanted to play some bf3.
then i just ran 5min to see if all my memory is working , with blend test, and msi board gave 1.48 volts to cpu all stock settings nothing changed in bios except memory settings o.0
1.48 was why to high looking at other reports etc.
so when in bios to change last setting on my memory , and boom did not boot, try booting it few times, and boom there was smoke , vrms blown , without the pc even booting .
so it seems board and cpu died, they rma the cpu but the board they refused to.
the retail store told me they tried there best and only way i can get rma is with rma number from msi, i logged ticket on msi website no reply yet, hoping this post will get me a reply.
    CPU: fx8120 with noctua d14

Operating system: windows 7 ultimate 64bit
    PSU: corsair hx750

ive seen allot of people online getting a rma for vrm's burned , just hope i can get one also :(

  • MSI 990FXA-GD65 and Sapphire 7870 XT Tahiti - only 4 cards working

    Hi
I am trying to use more than 4 GPU of 7870XT Tahiti working on MSI 990FXA-GD65, but only 4 GPUs are visible. In control panel (device lists) there is 5th when I use all x16 slots, but it looks as below:
I use PCI-E 1x-16x and 16x-16x risers, also tried to short pins responbile for graphic card detection.
    Win 7 64-bit , tried Catalyst 13.1, 13.4 , power supply Lepa 1600W, CPU Sempron x2 190, 2GB RAM
    Please help with this issue.

You have already been advised using more graphics cards than what is supported is not going to work. That is a user to user support answer that was provided. This is not MSI but a user to user forum of MSI products. MSI is not involved here, and the opinions & statements here are not connected to them in any official manner. Your question has been answered. This thread should now probably be locked.

  • HP G7000 G7096EA Won't boot, no post/bios, blank grey screen

My HP G7000 G7096EA Won't boot, no post/bios, blank grey screen - It does appear to get into windows after return is pressed, albeit with blank grey screen.
I've reseated the RAM/harddisk, tried the power button reset method. Left it overnight with power battery/power.
I'm at a loss now with what to try. It does look to be a dead graphics chip, which is a shame and will probably put me off HP for life!

Ok, I've stripped it down to diagnose. Due to the piss poor cooling on the graphics chip, it's fried itself and melted the solder underneath.
This was actually the second laptop I had off HP as the first broke within a very short time.
Needless to say, I'll be buying from Dell in the future! What a crock of **bleep** HP are.
Oh yeah! And HP wanted £16 + vat just to speak to some outsourced crappy call centre!

  • HELP! My 2011 MSI P67A-GD65 (B3) build suddenly refuses to boot

Hello, I am new to this forum because I hadn't had any troubles yet.
I built my system in July/August 2011. Here's what it has:
    MSI P67A-GD65 (B3)
Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge CPU
    16GB Corsair Vengeance 240-pin DDR3 1600
    650w Corsair Enthusiast PSU
MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1GD5/OC GeForce Graphics Card
    1x 2TB Hitachi 7K3000 7200RPM SATA 6 GB/s (With Windows 7 64-bit installed)
    2x 3TB Seagate 7200RPM SATA 6 GB/s (For storage)
I have used this computer for graphics and video editing...it has served me faithfully. Yesterday evening while editing a Word document, I got "do you want to save your changes before exiting?" and of course I said yes. Then to my surprise my computer proceeded to shut down and reboot. At first I thought maybe I missed a Windows Update message telling me it would reboot in xxx minutes so I was not alarmed. But then as I watched it reboot, it gave me the POST message that there was no disc drive recognized. I thought that was weird since I never noticed it before. But then after the BIOS screen with the MSI graphics thing I was faced with a blank screen except for a flashing cursor two inches from the top of the screen. When I realized that this wasn't going to leave, I got a bit worried so I did a reset through my tower's button and same thing happened...I unplugged everything and let it sit for a few minutes... restarted 10 minutes later....same thing. Did it again and then went into my BIOS to look around. It showed no HDD's connected and I had 3 hooked up. I was concerned my HDD went bad so I connected it to another pc and accessed it with no trouble as another storage...I was happy my files are all there. So then I reconnected to my original build and got the same POST message, but this time the drives were visible in BIOS....but still no boot.
I have another blank SATA HDD so I removed all my HDD's and connected it by itself along with my SATA DVD drive and I tried to do a clean Win7 install on it. But at the point in the install process where it asks WHERE you want to install Windows, no drives showed up. So that door was closed. I tried the same thing again after swapping SATA port locations, thinking 1 was defective, but I got the same treatment from all of them...nothing recognized during the install process, although the drives are showing up in BIOS....
I think I know why the POST message is saying 'no drives detected,' though...I read it is saying that based on the SATA ports being used...I have 8 SATA's on my MOBO...4 6gb/s; 4 3gb/s. 7-8 are 6gb/s and ONLY when I have a HDD plugged into one of them does it show on the POST screen...which I still think is weird, and seems to have just started happening last night with the rest of the problems...but I could live with that since I could disable the message in BIOS I think.
But I have tried to clear the CMOS...all three ways...jumper, button, battery. I reset BIOS thru BIOS.... Nothing changes. BTW, in BIOS I ran a RAM memory check and it passed. Besides, I am not hearing any weird beeps...related to that....
I don't know why this would happen after working perfectly for 2 years... And why would it politely shut down in the beginning of the process anyways? I mean...I appreciated being asked to save my changes...but I don't know what else to do...PLEASE OFFER SUGGESTIONS...any help is appreciated.
Thank you in advance...I hope someone can help me! I am still covered by warranty...but I want to do this right.
    Thanks!
    Marie
EDIT: BTW, I have also tried unplugging everything from the pc except for the DVI and power plug in case that was interferring....

On a slightly different topic...would it work (I have never done this!) to take my OS HDD and boot it on another PC? I am thinking this would not work because of system files and etc., but I have always wondered this and now would be the best time for me to know
It mostly works if the components used aren't too special. As you have no RAID setup it should work. However you will need to reactivate Windows once it made it. Of course you will also need all drivers for the new machine. Be aware that you might not be able to connect to the internet before you installed the proper driver for the ethernet adapter.

Recommend opening a ticket with MSI Tech Support & describing in detail the problems you are having with the new bios. Since this is a user to user forum, nothing concerning a bios revision or the like is going to get fixed here. About the only advice anyone here could give would be maybe some new setting in the bios has been added, or a setting has been overlooked preventing the desired results.
After taking a peek in the manual, nothing is shown about the board having these setting options. It's possible the new bios has incorporated it. It would show up in bios Cell Menu & the description of what it is & what it does would be in the info box to the right. When OC'ing, make sure to disable Spread Spectrum. After the bios update, did you remove the power cord from the PSU & clear CMOS?
I have disabled the "Spread Spectrum" because it caused slow perfomance especially in SSD.
About the power cord and clear cmos. No, never, ever.

I don't see the point of posting system specs because I'm sure it's a bug, the bios refuses to save the Cell Menu options but whatever. I can't argue with that because this information is crucial to most issues
