MOVED: MSI Amd Radeon HD 7870 Hawk won't overclock

This topic has been moved to Overclocking, Undervolting.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165481.0

Interestingly enough, after reading your post, I did some checking with mine. I have the core voltage bumped up to 1.237 in afterburner (note: it rounds the voltage to the nearest 3/10 of a volt I think) and the clock at 1150 for testing, down from 1200 where it's been for a couple of months due to recent crashes in BL2.
Both GPU-Z and HWiNFO64 show 0.825v at idle and 1.219v under load! Afterburner, however, shows 1.3v using it's in system tray monitoring tool.
So now I don't know what to believe. It seems as if it's not changing for me as well.
Tomorrow I'm going to hook up the leads and check it with my VOM so I can see for myself.

  • XPS 8500, AMD Radeon HD 7870, TF2 Crashes

Team Fortress 2 crashes my XPS 8500. I have an AMD Radeon HD 7870. It always crashes, ALWAYS. There are wild audio and screen artifacts associated w/ this. Often the card dies and I get a message that the card failed but then recovered. The game whites out and must be forced to close. Sometimes I get some kind of computer lock, screen goes black, fans are whirring. Sometimes the crash is at game load screen, right after launch. Sometimes crash happens 10-30 minutes in. It always crashed this machine, but recently the frequency is off the charts. The machine is two years old. Dell replaced the GFX card once with a new one due to failure. I have issues on other games on very rare occasions but TF2 is a guarantee crash. The card is not OC and everything else is pretty stock Dell.  I'm in Win 8.1. I've tried:
Browsed Steam forums to little avail
    Tweak screen resolution
    Play in Windowed mode
    Lowered in game specs
Roll back AMD drivers ( this makes things worse for entire machine )
Turned ON Vertical Refresh + Open GL Triple Buffering
    Among other things
I'm running out of ideas.  Is this a power supply issue?

The EVGA 560 needs a 650W power supply with 2X PCI-E power connections. Card Length is not an issue with the XPS 8500.
That card Works fine in my Inspiron 620.
Getting the power adapters in after is impossible imho but you can plug them up BEFORE inserting and then carefully put the card in.
Here is a better pic with better wiring.
8.6 aka 9 inch cards are a VERY TIGHT FIT.  10 inch Cards are IMPOSSIBLE as are 12 inch cards. On Inspiron 620 or 3847

  • Can't connect my 2009 Mac Pro to HDMI with an AMD Radeon HD 7870

That's the basic jist.  I recently purchased an early 2009 3.33 GHz Mac Pro running OS X 10.8.5.  Installed was an AMD Radeo HD 7870 2048 MB graphics card, which has an hdmi port.  I'm able to connect a display via the mini-DVI output, but when connecting through the HDMI input on either my moniter (22" ViewSonic VX2270SMH-LED) or my tv (a 32" LG LED TV) there's no signal.  When I plug the hdmi from the computer into one of the tv's two hdmi ports, it recognizes a device and asks to switch over.  When I do, it tells me there's no signal.
    Again, my specs:
    Mac Pro Early 2009
    Mac OS X 10.8.5
    3.33 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    16 GB 1066 MHZ DDR3 ECC
    2 TB SATA Disk
AMD Radeo HD 7870 2048 MB
    Help!
    Many thanks.

To have your Mac adjust settings automatically, a display must answer with its name and capabilities when the Mac sends a query. The Mac sends such queries:
    • at Startup,
    • when you click the ( Detect Displays ) button [ try holding down Alt/Option key while viewing System Preferences > Displays] or
    • when your Mac awakes from sleep.
So first set your display to the appropriate port. Next try a Restart, or Sleep and wake your Mac, or use the ( Detect Displays ) button.

Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the provided archive (130.rar) and put the included file (TV281MH.130) on that stick.
Rename TV281MH.130 to 130.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 130.rom [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

  • MSI AMD RADEON HD 6970 Lightning Problem

Hi guys i was wondering if you can help me. I am fairly certain i have a problem with my graphics card when playing a particular game (Football Manager 2012) via Steam.
On occasion the game will freeze entirely, along with my keyboard/mouse etc, and sometimes it will rectify itself and carry on as normal or it will stay frozen resulting in me having to do a hard reset.
I have updates my drivers, all windows updates etc but still have this problem. I have double checked with the game developers who are adamant its not them and I'm at a loss to be honest.
Please can someone help me? I Can play CIV5 and watch movies etc fine its just this game. Specs are below:

  • MSI - AMD Radeon HD 7850 OC Edition CRASH

    Hello,
I recently bought MSI HD 7850 OC Edition. Before I install new card,
     - I uninstalled AMD 12.2 drivers, reboot pc
     - Ran DriverFusion (newer version of DriverSweeper), deleted entries and reboot, then shutdown.
     - Removed my old HD 5770.
     - Installed new card.
     - Installed new drivers and reboot.
Then I wanted to test performance in BF3, i had significant FPS boost but after like 2-3 mins, sound started looping then i got a white screen with stripes. Then I rebooted and tried again. This time I had black screen, my monitor just went into sleep. I thought maybe it is a problem with BF3 only. So I tried Natural Selection 2. Again, after 2-3 mins I had a green screen with stripes again.
    Any ideas?

Hi Guys, so I to recently purchased a new system and a MSi HD 7850 1G graphics card and I'm getting the same vertical line random crash when I play games  ( happens on Batman or GW2) and when I run FurMark Burn Test.
Bare in mind I've reinstalled the Gcard drivers from the website, reinstalled windows 7 64bit and swapped ram.  My GeForce 9800 Graphics card works fine and passes a 20min Furmark burn test and does not crash the machine, so I think it must be the HD 7850 card settings or its just dodgy card!
I read on another forum that I should change the core clock target and the core memory targets  using Catalyst Control Centre.
    (Google Tomshardware - sapphire-7850-edition-vertial-lines-crash-issue-help)
This seems to be what your suggesting to try here, so I was wondering what values I should change these to? It was originally set to:
    core clock target:
    30000
    90000
    memory core target:
15000 (don't know why this was so low)
    120000
(do I need to another property name, Want_2 ? As suggested in the link? )
Also if changing these setting fails, what should my next core of action be?
    here is my system:
    Board: Gigabyte X79-UD3
    VGA: MSi HD 7850
    PSU: Corsair CX7750 750watt
    Intel Core i7-3820 3.60 GHz
    MEM: Corsair 16 GB
    SSD: 128Gb
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
    Thanks

When your time permits, list 'all' your systems components, OS etc., including PSU +12V amps on the rail(s).
    Quote
cannot even get it to post at 3.6ghz with manual voltage increases in all things, and auto doesnt help, is this normal?
Yes, when it isn't necessary to do "increases in all things".
    Quote
Im not very confident with doing the ioh mod but im getting 90 degrees with no overclock
The addition of a fan to direct air flow at the IOH, will reduce the temp. The Antec Spot Cool works well for this. Aftermarket CPU coolers have taken away the engineered passive air flow the stock cooler provides (presuming you are not using the stock cooler). 90c is in spec, so RMA solely upon that is doubtful. Again, when time permits, include what OC goals you are looking for as well. Most OC'ing takes time, patience, & trial & error.

  • Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870

    Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

    Great news!
I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in.

  • MSI 990FXA-GD80 / MSI Radeon ATI HD 7870 Hawk / Phanteks combo.

    Hi
I am in the process of building a new system but have, potentially, run into some problems.
The motherboard I am looking to buy is the “MSI 990FXA-GD80” and the graphics card is the “MSI Radeon ATI HD 7870 Hawk”, processor  FX-8350.
    Now to my question/possible problem.
I am looking to buy a third party cooler from Phanteks, the “Phanteks PH-TC14P-RD”.
I know that it will be a tight fit between the cooler and the graphics card normally, and since the Hawk has the “GPU reactor” (which builds the height of the card) my concern is that it would interfer with the Phanteks making it impossible for me to install the video card using the Phanteks.
I was wondering if this combo would work or not, prior to registering here I Googled searched like crazy but came up with nothing.
I would really appreciate some help.
    Best regards.
    Eric

Since that board has two PCI-E slots with 16 lanes you wouldn't have to use the first slot so reactor is not the real issue. The VRM cooler of the board could be more troublesome as the cooler has two towers and two fans.
However I found somone listing a combo with the cooler and a 990FXA-GD65 which should have a vrm cooler of the same height.
