  • MSI K9A2 PLAT/AMD 9850 BE/ CPU Ratio issue

    Stats
    AMD-9850 BE
MSI-K9A2 plat v1.0/Bios 1.3(have given 1.4 and 1.6 a try and it does not fix the issue)
    PSU-Apevia Warlock 900w
    ATI 4870
    4gigs(2 sticks) OCZ-DDR2 1066
    Windows Vista 64-SP1
My issue is that my CPU ratio will not change the speed of my current CPU clock in BIOS(or real time CPUZ).  The stock CPU ratio for an AMD 9850 BE is 12.5.  I can change it to 13 (ect) and save and reboot but it will not change the CPU clock, however the cell menu shows it at x13 2600 MHz.  Its almost as if the ratio is locked and it should not be.  I can lower the Ratio to 12 changing the CPU clock to 2.4 so it is working, in a way.  When I gave bios 1.6 a try the options for CPU ration only went up to 12.5(stock).  I am starting to think that I got a locked 9850 when it came in a 9850BE box!!!   Is there a MB setting I am missing or anything?  This is starting to drive me nuts.
Any help would be great!! thank you
    PS
AOD also shows all options to change CPU Ratio grayed out.... Could having D.O.T.3 Step settings disabled mess this up?
Is There something that has to be physically set to allow this on the MB?... Which would be a 1st for me?

Best BIOS setting for MSI K8N Plat + AMD 3000+ Venice + Geil Value RAM

If you want SSE3 support and you do not overclock, Bios 1.4 is the only one officially available (1.41beta is not official).
Try to upgrade to 1.4 and see it for yourself, do the upgrade with floppy in DOS so that you can save your old Bios.
I would rather wait till mid June when a less troublesome new bios is suppose to be availabe for NEO4 MBs.

  • MSI K9A2 Plat. & BIOS 1.0B3 3/17/08

    Hello,
I was hoping some of you could answer a question for me. I ordered a AMD Phenom 9850 X4 BE and was needing to know if the MSI K9A2 Plat. & BIOS 1.0B3 3/17/08 revison will work with this processor????? I don't really want to update the bios no more than I have to...
    Thanks,

I don't really know, but 1.1, 1.3, and 1.4 BIOS all indicate Changes for CPU's.  In the past with other brands I have seen to BIOS improperly recognize the CPU, but the CPU functioned well most times, but there were exceptions.
The Beta BIOS are not listed  where I looked. But you date seems newer than 1.4.  Unless someone more knowledgeable rolls along, I would just try it with the new CPU.

  • 990FXA-GD65 AMD 970 BE CPU Ratio Only working on one core

Pretty much cut & paste of the "990FXA-GD80 AMD 955 BE CPU Ratio Only working on one core" thread.
I have overclocked this AMD 970 BE previously on a asus m3n72-d without issue. Always changing the multiplier to achieve the desired frequency while leaving the FSB at 200. But, after setting up everything on my new 900fxa-gd65 the CPU ratio change to 19x with a fsb of 200 only changes one core to 3.8 ghz and leaves the others at 3.5 ghz (17.5x 200).

Already contacted MSI tech support, for whatever good it does me.
Just thought I'd make a new thread to seperate the issue between the two MSI boards.

For what its worth, the problem should be fixed in the latest BETA UEFI/BIOS Release:

  • Best BIOS setting for MSI K8N Plat + AMD 3000+ Venice + Geil Value RAM

    Hi all,
Which BIOS settings would you recommend for this combination:
    MSI K8N Plat
    3000+ Venice core
    2 x 512 MB GEIL value RAM
I have NorthQ Giant UFO cooler attached to CPU. I would like to have as fast system as possible but remain on the safe side - a 100% stable system.... I know default would be safe enough but wouldn't use the potential of the CPU, I gues....

The best I can advise is to delete Control Centre from your PC and attempt changes via the BIOS. IF that fails then MSI technical needs to be advised so that they can try and simulate your hardware combo. If it does work via the BIOS, then MSI technical should be advised irrespective about the Control Centre's inability to perform the functions it should.
My own experience with Control Centre software has been anything but satisfactory. The best way is still to tweak via the BIOS.
Just to confirm, you did do a CMOS reset/clear after the BIOS update? Power cord removed..... the normal procedure?
Yeah I've been working in the BIOS.. Bummer the tool lets me change everything but the CPU ratio..
I cleared CMOS w/ the same process you mentioned a few times prior to be sure..
Just after I made the initial post I opened a tech support tkt so we shall see.. I still think it has something to so w/ the BIOS interpreting my CPU as locked but I could be wrong..
Thanks for your assistance.. I appreciate it..

To begin with this was moved to wrong section of forum, this belongs in either 'Retired' section or 'AMD' section not Intel C2D/Q.
As for caps see badcaps.com ( http://www.badcaps.net/pages.php?vid=2 ) for replacement for online ordering of them, they have been supplying these items for quite a few years or get what you need from a local store if available, you will not get any MSI factory cap kits as they do not offer such repair items for sale.
My advice would be assemble components and test with a known good PSU and if it runs OK then you know it was the PSU that went belly up. It could be that due to age and bad PSU some caps may be bad but that could be seen easy enough just by close examination of them. badcaps has plenty of pictures for comparison of good vs bad caps.
What brand and model is the PSU in question?

  • MOVED: MSI Neo2 FX, AMD 939 RAM question

    Why is it fine?,
Yes, your maths are OK. But:
    http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K8N-Neo2-FX.html#?div=Detail
Look at the table of the details (it's the same as in my manual).
According to that table, my RAM configuration should not be 400Mhz, but 333Mhz.
    And something else:
The DIMMS are 2 Kingston and 2 Corsair. All modules have the same click speeds and are double sided. So, should I enter them as:
Kingston (Green), Corsair (purple), Kingston (Green), Corsair (Purple), or as:
Kingston (Green), Kingston (Purple), Corsair(Green), Corsair (Purple)

  • MOVED: Msi K9A2 Platinum slow boot up on Vista 64 Bit

This topic has been moved to Vista problems.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=120556.0
The problem described is Vista related.

I experienced similar problems this weekend with my rig.
I have two WD Raptor drives, 150GB on the promise controller and SATA DVD on SB600. If I started Vista, it would boot, show POST screen, then I would see the initial Windows green bar, but after a minute with lots of disk activity then the system would reboot.
Next, I would then be promoted to start windows normally, or start with the last known good configuration, sometimes this worked, sometime it did not. This happended for a while, until I managed to install all of the optional and recommended Vista 64bit OS patches and an updated promise raid driver.
Once these were installed, my system had no boot problems at all, so I would make sure your promise driver is up to date and that all the Vista 64bit OS patches, updates etc are installed.
