Yeah, that could be it.  So this applies to you as well:

MSI emailed me again and stated that if the QC number (by the cpu socket) is 01, 02, or 03, I will have to have "parts added" to the board to make it compatible with 45nm procs.  I could send it to have this done

I just checked this board supported E8400.
My PC runs well with the CPU I used before, and I tested E8400 at shop and it worked.
    Anyone knows what is wrong?

  • Who has this setup - MSI P6N SLI Platinum & E8400

This message is intended for anyone who has the MSI P6N SLI Platinum & E8400 in a working state.
I've had the pleasure of perusing these forums for a while in hopes of finding an answer as to why my E8400 isn't working with my P6N SLI Platinum. I've updated my BIOS, I've RMA'd my chip, I've even contacted MSI support (with no reply I might add). I have been so careful when handling these components and thoroughly reading the instructions, to no avail. I've got the board and all components working with a different processor. I've tried the voltage modifications that many have said work, I've tried different memory, I even tried a different video card. So I'm stuck in the same boat as many it seems, however there are one or two posts on this forum and others where people have said they actually got it to work!
So now I really hope I can get this question answered - What is a working config? One of the things I haven't tried yet is a new power supply. My current PS is 650w, but has the 4 pin CPU power connector. From the posts I've read, it shouldn't matter if I have the 4 or the 8. But in reality, does this CPU work on the P6N Plat with an 8 pin connector? I'd be willing to go buy a new PS if thats the case! What else could possibly be the issue? Any and all feedback is appreciated. i really didn't want to start up another thread for this proc/board issue, but perhaps someone else has joined this board by now that may provide the little piece of info that I've been missing.
    Cheers,
    Aaron

according to the website, the 1.6 BIOS had cpu updates in march so I's assume it would have support for the E8400.
What exactly happens when you turn on the system with the E8400?

    Hello and welcome,
First of all, 1066MHz isnt garantueed to work on that board, I have the same and although is says so on the box, it isnt supported, look here:
    http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=170&cat3_no=&prod_no=1140#menu
    533/667/800Mhz only.
    To reach 3.6 try following:
Raise NB step by step, until ~1.35V max, SB @stock, FSB VTT to 4 - 8%
Set FSB to 1600 and mem to 800 on auto timings, you can adjust those later.
And leave Vcore on 0.100V as said in your post.
See if you can get it to run then.

  • MSI P6N SLI V2 does not boot up from cd/dvd and few other problems

    HI
I just bought a computer P6N SLI V2 + E6750. It has following problem. It does not boot from cd.
I have Sata HD. CD/DVD is installed to IDE as a master.
I have done settings in bios so that First boot is cd/dvd and second is sata HD. Anyhow it still goes to the hd and stars windows.
I was only able to boot up from cd when I disabled hd from boot sequency. Meaning I left only cd/dvd there.
Hopefully you pro's can help me.
Then there is another problem. Windows is telling me that it found new pci device. I do not know what device. I have only Graphig card (geforce 8800 gts) installed into pci-E. Drivers and software are also installed, I assume proberly. How to find out what windows thinks it found.
Third problem is onboard soundcard. I cannot get any sound out from the machine. I have downloaded driver from realtek, but still no sound.
Unfortunatelly I do not have original software for motherboard. Only the latest from MSI website.
    Hopefully someone can help me.
    thanks.

About bootup, i dont know yet.
To find out what windows found, look in devicemanager.
To go there go to controlpanel, system then choose devicemanager.
There you can see what's installed.
Last, your soundcards needs to be enabled in bios, under integrated peripherals there should be a line with "onboard sound", enable this and sound should work, unless its broken.

If you turn EIST off you should be able to put the multiplier to a specific number between 12 and 21 (or higher if you have an unlocked Extreme CPU) and that is where it will stay.
I believe that is exactly what i did, i disabled EIST, C1E and set multiplier to 21, however, when i run a stability test(Prime95 or Linx) it always drops the multiplier down from 21x to 20x.
It seems to me turbo mode is still working when it is supposed to be disabled when you set multiplier to 21(or maybe it is just simply won't allow x21 multiplier to be used at full load anyway, turbo mode on or off).

Very good point Jack. There you go ravescar & others, give that a try & see if it makes a difference. smile
I experimented a bit with Overspeed Protection enabled and disabled, however i did not notice any difference in this regard, the multiplier still drops to 20 on high load for me.
However this problem do not happen if i set multiplier to 20, it is only the 21 multiplier that have this issue.
    This is on a MSI X58 Eclipse SLI Motherboard + i7 920 D0 stepping + 6gb GSKILL Trident 16000 CL9 RAM.
    Quote
BTW. I've read of a couple of cases where DO stepping 920's getting 22x with Turbo enabled but I'll remain skeptical regarding the validity.
Maybe it is just earlier version of cpu-z mis-reporting multiplier?

"Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU.  After that load "Optimized Defaults" in BIOS."
    1. after that INTEL EIST is Enabled and now default cpu voltages 1.22v ,and i can set from 1.24 to 2.0125v..and  there is no AUTO mode...(auto mode only in memory voltage and VTT voltage)
    2. and after intel eist is enabled i can set cpu clock ratio this option is disabled.....
    3. and i still cannot set cpu voltage to 1.14 1.15 1.16 1.17 1.18 1.19 1.20
4 when intel eist is disabled default cpu voltages is 1.500v but all utilities like CPUZ show 1.135 cpu voltages its ok , but when EIST is enabled default voltages are 1.22v and all utilities show that tempreture is 1.200v...its not ok...
or if i dont want to overclock my cpu i must set eist disabled ? and if i want to overclock cpu i must set eist enabled...and after that set cpu voltages to 1.2v or more...yes or no? ;/ and why if eist enabled clock ratio option is disabled? only way its manually set fsb clock,or its should be like that?

Is this to be a gaming compuer or server I am confused
    http://ark.intel.com/products/65729/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1245V2-8M-Cache-3_40-GHz
That mobo supports that cpu with the following bios:
    Xeon Ivy Bridge E3-1245V2 100 3.40 1M 8M E1 77 7751vA5.zip
So more than likely you will need a supported cpu to flash to that version for it to work.
If this is for gaming, there are better choices for the cpu though.
    Gaming:

As for the memory, we have seen the best results with corsair dominator or vengence memory.

    Hi,
    Yes both are compatible.
    What is your power supply?
Also did you try any different cable for video between GPU and TV/monitor? Maybe try different monitor too.
Hello ah, so the card and the MoBo are compatible? thats great!
PSU is Corsair CX750M 750W ATX 80+ Bronze PC Power Supply
also i will try a newer monitor that just has a DVI wire rather than using a converter

  • MOVED: P6N Sli Plat. weird cold boot issue

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=116740.0

yeah well if I set the timing to like 5-5-5-15 or something I'm sure it'll work fine.    But that's not the point...  Cuz if I have to set my timings to 5-5-5-15 just to get it up to the 889mhz that I need it.  I might as well just run the run in async mode at 4-4-4-12 800mhz.
Seriously I have the weirdest ram.  I can run it at 4-4-4-12 800mhz with like 2.0 volts.  So There's like 0.2 volts of overclocking there.  But it just won't work at 889mhz.  And it not like it doesn't pass memtest or orthos.  The weird part is that it passes both at 889mhz at 4-4-4-12 timings at 889mhz.  The problem is that it won't start cold boot.    I'll have to press the power button and then press the reset button to get it to boot.  I guess that's not a really big problem, but having to press that reset button each time I cold boot is just really annoying.
If I set them to 4-4-4-12 at 800mhz, the computer turns on fine.
I think the problem is the precharge for the ram.  I'll bet loosening the timing will make it work, but I just don't want to loosen those timings...
I just bought new ram so we'll see if that solved my problems.  :-P
It might be the electron migration thing though.  I hear electron migration damage to things show up as random unpredictable problems.
I would say my problems are random and unpredictable.
By the way, I just got a couple of fans for the ran slots.  They're sort of just jammed in there.  Kind of not elegant really.  But I now have TEN fans in the computer.  I hope that helps my ram overclocking.

We had a unit do the same thing that you are talking about here. I found after two days of test that it was the Heatsink. It had the grease but it was not seated just right. When I redid the Heat sink the issue went away. I had to clean them both and then surface the Heatsink with 600 grt paper.
When I put it back together it worked fine.
I can't say that this is it, what is wrong with yours but it does and is doing the same things that we had going on with us.
You might check this and see. Because it would not boot no matter what we did. And it will heat up and trip out in a second.
And this is after the machine had run playing games for a week or so. I thinkt he Heat sink warped from the heat. I have never seen one do this before but I guess it could happen. Any way it fixed ours.
Do You mean the CPU heatsink, or GPU heatsink? -
By the way, who wants to guess if I was blessed or not - and if buying a new $150+ PSU really helped
Please, any more help would be great
