  • MSI R9 280X dimensions question

    Hi,
I am having a serious problem with my Micro ATX case (Lian-Li PC-V355) trying to "squeeze" a high end card inside it.
So far I have tried Asus DC2 Top 7970 and MSI Lightning GTX680 without success. Both of these cards were two thick (or too tall for me) with dimensions 129,54 and 129mm respectively.
I really want to buy the MSI R9 280X but I fear its width will too high for my case...
Can anyone explain to me how they calculate the width? From which part of the card do MSI start counting?
    Thank you in advance
    Yannis

Is it possible for someone from MSI to tell me the actual width from the PCB to the end of the cooler?
I am asking this because In my case there is about 20mm free space from PCB and upwards.
    Thank you in advance
    Yannis

Recommend opening a ticket with MSI Tech Support & describing in detail the problems you are having with the new bios. Since this is a user to user forum, nothing concerning a bios revision or the like is going to get fixed here. About the only advice anyone here could give would be maybe some new setting in the bios has been added, or a setting has been overlooked preventing the desired results.
After taking a peek in the manual, nothing is shown about the board having these setting options. It's possible the new bios has incorporated it. It would show up in bios Cell Menu & the description of what it is & what it does would be in the info box to the right. When OC'ing, make sure to disable Spread Spectrum. After the bios update, did you remove the power cord from the PSU & clear CMOS?
I have disabled the "Spread Spectrum" because it caused slow perfomance especially in SSD.
About the power cord and clear cmos. No, never, ever.
    Full System Specs:
    Tower: CoolerMaster Cosmos RC-1000
    PSU: CoolerMaster Real Power M850
    CPU: Intel Core i7 920
    CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster V8
    Motherboard: MSI X58A-GD65
    RAM: OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800 Intel® i7 Triple Channel [3x2GB, 1600 MHZ, 8-8-8-24]
    SSD: A-Data X25 80GB by Intel (Model: SSDSA2MH080G1GN) [Sata 2]
    VGA: Sapphire Radeon HD4870 1GB
    HDD1: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB (WD1001FALS) [Sata 2]
    HDD2: Western Digital 250GB [Sata 1]
    HDD3: Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB (WD6402AAEX) [Sata 3]
    Optical 1: Samsung 223QRSMN DVD-RW [Sata ?]
    OS: Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
I don't see the point of posting system specs because I'm sure it's a bug, the bios refuses to save the Cell Menu options but whatever. I can't argue with that because this information is crucial to most issues

    1. CPU fan is only one, its goes to CPU FAN header.
    2. See here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=127129.0
The keyboard key for boot menu is F11
    3. What "dead usb port"?
    Quote
I plugged my USB keyboard/mouse in the back and it didn't work, but I plugged it into any of the other 4 USB ports and it worked.
Assemble user's error. Check for properly connections here: >>If you are having problems with USB ports, read this topic.<<

Additional Notes: It does boot into my old installation of Windows just fine. Do I just need to install the new drivers/utilities to make sure the motherboard works? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!
It's recommended to perform a new fresh OS installation

No, they don't. If they did, they would have the same name.
    http://us.msi.com/support/mb/990FXAGD65V2.html#down-bios
That should be a link for the 990FXA-GD65V2 bios download page.
Actually they do use the same BIOS. The link you provided stopped at BIOS 19.7 (7640vJ7.zip), BIOS files for the V2 are way out of date but the 990FXA-GD65 has updated BIOS files up to 19.9 (7640vJ9.zip) + K.x for W8. K.x should only be used with W8, not XP or W7.
    http://us.msi.com/support/mb/990FXAGD65.html#support_download
For the FX 8320 CPU you would have needed 19.9 (7640vJ9.zip)
     Funki,
     What OS do you have?

    it's 4pin fans atm i don't use any 3 pin fans (artic F12 PWM)
The one i have in my side panel is connected with a low noise adapter and run at 50% about 700-750 rpm
The other 3 fans are connected to my 2 cpu fans (pst) so they run with speed according to my cpu fans, which is an advantage
since they can run as low as 20% at low loads, temps, but connected to my mb sysfan header they are limited to 50% and that is waaaaay to much if i want them to be 100% silent, with command center limited is 50%, what i can set sys fan speed to as a minimum in the bios i don't know, i think it's also 50%
That's not good enough, since 50% won't make fans like noctuas and other low rpm fans run as low as 300-400 rpm if i want a silent pc

Update your BIOS to the latest Version.  Download the latest BIOS from this site:
    http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=265
...and then  >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<< to update.
A newer BIOS should allow you to enter Frequency Values above 333 MHz.
But please be aware that your OC plans may probably not get you where you want to go. As you are using DDR2-667 memory modules, any FSB Clock Speed above 333 MHz will force you to overclock your memory, even with the lowest Memory Frequency value (533 MHz = FSB/Memory Ratio 1:1).
Also, the board is a low-end budget board which is not really intended for overclocking.  There is no option to change the CPU Core Voltage.  That means that your results will be limited (usually between 320 - 360 MHz FSB Clock Speed, depending on the exemplar of the processor.
In any case, with DDR2-667 memory modules, you do not really have the best conditions to go beyond 333 MHz FSB Clock Speed anyway.  But try your luck.  If it does not work, you can always try better memory (DDR2-800).

ust passed 3D Mark, no artifacts during the whole test - full load was around 96-98%, highest gpu temperature 85°C with fan running at 2400 rpm max (70%) - according to the GPU-Z/HWinfo.
But after this test has passed, graphic artifacts appeared on the screen in "2d" (in windows, low core/memory speed and temeperature but small squares were everywhere flickering like crazy).

Bios: A7392IMS V2.1 080608 is the number top left.
    CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz
    Gfx : 512Mb NiVidia GeForce 9800GTX+
Mem:  2 X 2GB DDR 2 800 MHz (will try and find out brand).
H/D : 2 * 160Gb drives. One is Seagate, the other Western Digital, both SATA 2.
OS : XP not that it's really relevant...
PSU : 800W. Don't know brand and DC current output. Will try to get these.

    1.0x
    2.0x

I flash the BIOS, but still got same result.
    I have a P4 2.4
    Thanks for any help.
    Mike
I am about to take it back, but thought I try here first.

If you can return it that would be the best choice.  That mobo has a lot of problems, just look at all the posts.  Not all MSI fault.  Other brands with that same SIS chip set have similar problems.  The problem you are having looks like they left out the multipliers in the bios because all production intel cpu are locked so there is no use for them.  The unlocked cpu like you have are so rare it is hard to tell which boards have multipliers (hit or miss).  I think you would have better chance with intel chip set based boards but am not sure.  If you are looking for a high end board the canterwood chip set looks real good.
