  • My computer randomly shuts down and won't restart.

My computer randomly shut down and would not restart. I took it to an apple store and they fixed it by running something through the disk utility. I was told to run something else (it had to do with what the computer does when it shuts down as I don't shut mine down a lot). It had been running when the guy showed me it at the upper right corner and said "initializing" but I did not remember what it was called when I got home and it was no longer open. Any one have a similar problem where this was suggested and remembers what is it called?

    Try a SMC reset.

MacBook Air randomly shuts down whether plugged in or on battery power but not when hooked up to a monitor and using bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Any suggestions? Battery fully powered.

  • My computer randomly shuts down

My computer shuts down randomly, and when it restarts it has a bar like its loading a new operating system.  Then when it opens up everything is fine until for no apparent reason it just shuts down.

The loading bar is normal. It replaces the old spinning gear. For the other problem:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Computer randomly shuts down and...

    Hello everyone!
I have had my desktop for about 7 months now, and haven't had any problems. Recently, my computer had begun to make a (sort of) loud humming noise. The humming noise would get louder at times, then soften back to a slight hum.
It has been doing this for about 3 weeks, but I didn't think anything of it because the performance of my computer never changed.
However, just a couple of days ago, when I was in the middle of a game (League of Legends,) my computer shut off when a lot of "action" started going on in-game. I tried to turn it back on, but only the fan and lights came on for 2-3 seconds, and it would shut back off.
I did some research and figured it was just dusty in the case, so I cleaned it out. That doesn't seem to be the problem, however the humming sound did stop. :/
I am thinking the PSU now, but I was wanting to know everyone else's opinions before I did anything.
My computer is under warranty still, thankfully. But I probably want to upgrade the PSU if that is the problem.
    Here is my computer: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/CyberPowerPC+-+Gamer+Ultra+Desktop+-+8GB+Memory+-+1TB+Hard+Drive/6897999...

Humming, in my experience, is usually from the power supply, but it could also be a faulty CPU cooling system.
I would take it into a store and have a Geek Squad agent check it in for a diagnostic(free under warranty) to nail down what is causing the problem.
The PSU would be covered under warranty, but an upgrade would not, so that's your perogative if you decide to upgrade.
Any other hardware issues should also be covered under the warranty.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • Computer randomly shuts down and refuses to boot

    Hello all.
A while back I installed Win 7 Pro on this (I think I had to install it on an SSD via another machine then used that SSD in the T610 and used win repair to fix the installation).
It's been going smoothly generally and it is on mor or less 24/7 for light use. I use it for watching films and browsing the net. nothing uch more intensive. Ever since the start, I would come in the morning and find it had shu itself down. sometimes when I push the power button it would boot back up as if everything had sut down properl. Other times when I push the power button its backlight stays on but I get no activity. Even the HDD light does not flicker. I also cannot repeat the trial unless I disconnect the power cable because holding the power button for any length of time does not switch off the system*
Sometimes I have some success if I open the case, reconnect the SSD and push the power button again but that is rare.
I don't think it's overheating because sometimes I leave the machine off for 12 hours and it still refuses to boot for another few hours.
It's really frustrating and I'm not sure what to do as even if I disconnect the SSD and push the power button in it's "sulking" state I get no feedback; bios nor sounds.
Could my BIOS be faulty? How do I check/update it's version from within windows? Often I don't see the bios screen. I remember I used to see it a long time ago but now it does not appear.
*The only time I have seen the PC turn off after holding the power button is if I am in Windows repair mode for some reason.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Since upgrading to yosemite my computer has become very unstable.
For anyone that can help with what may be causing this issue I would really
appreciate it. As for "Adobe" being a possible cause, how can I determine
which Adobe program and related files are the culprit?
Thank you very much to anyone who offer's their support and help.

A number of problems exist including the likelihood of system corruption as a result of using CleanMyMac.
It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.
There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.
Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.
Besides CleanMyMac2, garbage "cleaning" and "anti-virus" software exists, specifically "Avast", "Smith Micro", and "Symantec / Norton". Those products should not be installed on any Mac, because they convey no benefit and are only capable of creating or contributing to problems.
In addition, that Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified. Fixing a modified Hosts file requires specific instructions. Apple Support Communities contributor and EtreCheck author etresoft recently added a User Tip discussing that concern, and how to correct it: Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file
The recovery procedure that follows will obviate the need to correct all those separate problems and is likely to require the least amount of your time and interaction.
Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device.

  • Screen flickering, computer/programs randomly shut down

    Hey everyone,
I purchased a mid-2012 MacBook Pro Laptop from Apple about 1.5 years ago with AppleCare. Recently, the computer screen has started to flicker back, as if the screen is cutting out, and programs/entire computer randomly shuts down.
I've done their online chat of which they asked me to do two resets
         -non-volitile random access memory
         - cannot remember the second one. (CSS??)
It still continued to behave poorly.
I also took it to Apple and they did diagositics of which apparently the hardware checked out and they said it must be a software issue. So we formatted the computer about 6 days ago. For those 5 days everything seems to work perfectly. There was no flickering and no shutting down of programs or my computer.. no lost work !!! Then is occurs again on the 6th day the same things occurred.
Whats my next logical step? Anyone have any suggesting for when I go back to apple?

The problem with Microsoft word is it is not Universal Binary so it does not run well on an intel machine. The new version Microsoft is coming out with should run better since it will be universal binary.
    You might consider using NeoOffice
or Open Office as a more reliable replacement for Word. They both can open word documents and save as word.

  • My computer will randomly shut down.

Hello. I am using a 2006 model macbook pro, running 10.6.8 OS X. My Computer will randomly shut down with no prompt or closing any programs, as if someone held down the power button. When i go to the console application and look under system.log the last message i recieve before my computer shuts down is this:
    Dec  8 22:10:44 kieran-hooks-computer [0x0-0x16016].com.apple.appstore[170]: This isn't a bitmap context. Forcing destination format to ARGB_8 for CGContext.
this message is repeated over 15 times in a few seconds. I know quite a bit about computers so dont be afraid to get technical.
    please help,
                   -Kieran Hook

I know that it only does this when I do something computer intensive. And also the fans run 6000rpm constantly from startup.

    HAMitch,
your EtreCheck report will not reveal why your MacBook Pro shuts down randomly. What this report does reveal is that you have out-of-date versions of Java and Silverlight installed. The latest version of Java (7, Update 55) can be downloaded from here, and the latest version of Silverlight (5.1.30317.0) can be downloaded from here.
Without knowing some example situations in which your MacBook Pro randomly shuts down, it will be difficult to diagnose the problem. Would you provide some examples during which it has shut down? That is, which programs are running when it happens? How long has it been booted up when it happens? &c.
In the interim, after updating Java and Silverlight, you can try running your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test, to see if it can detect any hardware problems.

  • Windows randomly shutting down with new built pc

Morning folks, I'm typing this from my other laptop right now.  I just built a tower for gaming and I'm having an issue with windows 8.1.  It will randomly turn off anywhere from a minute or less after launching and logging in to 5 minutes after
launching and logging in.  I can't seem to tell what's triggering it either.  If I try to do anything a screen comes up with a sad face emoticon and tells me that something is wrong but I can never read the full message before the computer shuts
down completely.  It's not a soft landing either it's as if I held down the power button.  If you can tell me what information to give you I'll try my best.  My concern is I won't be able to get error or crash logs because if I try to do anything
the computer shuts down.  I'm currently sitting here not moving and letting it sit at desktop to see if anything happens.  So far it seems stable to it's only when I'm actively doing stuff.
Concerns I've seen people bring up, yes it is a legal version of 8.1 and yes I did activate the product, I wasn't able to set up my wireless adapter before the computer would shut down so I had to activate it over the phone, it didn't crash during that.
From there I was able to install the wireless drivers successfully and actually access the internet.  But as I was heading to a speedtest page the window came up and my computer shut down again.  From there it has shut down multiple times after just
minutes of trying to get online and install a game.
I've gone into BIOS and disabled the fast boot that someone has mentioned and I changed my power settings to be on high performance and turned off the timed shutdowns/sleep/driver shut down.  I don't think it was any of that though because, 1, it's
still happening and 2, those things were if it was shutting down after so long mine seems more random and in a much shorter time span.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
edit: I'm going to keep this updated, I'm at the moment installing my motherboards drivers/utilities.  Apparently I forgot to do that from the disk.  If that's the case and fixes it then I'll let you all know.  I still need to install these
and whatever is on the disk saying 'afterburner' lol.  This is my first time ever building a pc and I'm doing it with no help so bare with me.  Took me all night to figure out I had a couple things wired wrong with the hard drive and a couple fans.

Okay so after installing the drivers and doing some updates after things were installed the computer ran well for a good few hours.  In the mean time I was watching youtube and reading a different forum while I was downloading a game.  A couple
hours in the computer BSOD'd again but this time I think it's more manageable as I was actually able to read what it said and it was the more common one saying an issue occurred, and your computer needs to restart and it is collecting data.  It then shut
down very quickly as if it were a hard shut down and did not reboot on its own.
I'm going through the same actions again and waiting to see if it reoccurs or if it was a fluke.  I don't have the DMP files at the moment because I had to change the setting after reading the guide because it the folder wasn't in windows.  It
still isn't there after I made the changes and rebooted but I think that's because an incident hasn't happened yet in order to create the file.  In the mean time I turned off fast boot as it seems to be a common instigator of the problem.  I'll get
back to you if the problem arises again with the proper logs and dump files as it seems the computer is stable enough to actually navigate there now.  Woo!  Progress!

  • G5 randomly shuts down

lately my computer has randomly shut down. i just moved from boston to nebraska. i moved my computer in its original box and thought it was pretty safe. everything seems to be working fine except for this. the computer can be on for hours or not even minutes and just shuts down. there doesn't seem to be any other power issues in the room or apartment. can anyone please offer and idea as to what has started happening? thank you for your time.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Is your iMac an iMac (Flat Panel) or an iMac G5? It's well known that some iMac G5s suffered power issues.

  • My MacBook randomly shuts down.

    Hi there:
My 13" MacBook (2009?) keeps shutting down at random intervals, but very frequently.
I followed instructions to reset SMC - no change
The battery is fully charged, and retains it's charge.
The Energy save modes are at 15 mins computer/display sleep
The odd thing is, if i keep moving the mouse/trackpad or keep typing, the laptop stays functioning. As soon as I stop working or turn my back, it shuts itself down.
My next step is to start looking for Gremlins!
Any support or advice you can provide would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Jo

Try using the Console app for diagnosing the random shut down issue.
Go to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Open the Console app then follow the instructions here >  Mac OS X: Using Console to Troubleshoot Problems

  • How can I stop random shut downs on my MBP?

    15" MacBook Pro - late 2007
    Mac OS 10.7.3
2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 128 MB
I've been getting random shut downs for several weeks. It basically is like a power failure: straight to black, no warning, no reboot. Sometimes a very short beep/buzz occurs right as it dies. It seems to happen when I'm moving, holding, or have my hands resting on the computer, but not always. I've done the SMC and PRAM resets. I did a clean install of Lion. I just put in a new battery. I'm starting to think that it has to be the motherboard. Any suggestions or ideas?
Oh, and the error in the console is always the same: "kernel: Previous Shutdown Cause: -2."

I did not run the extended test, but I did take it into the Apple Store and they could not duplicate the problem. They told me they ran hardware tests on my software as well as their own and it never happened.
