MOVED: OS doesn't boot if IOAPIC is enabled in BIOS on 760GM-E51

This topic has been moved to Linux/Unix.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=145547.0

I would like some more info on your system to help you.  What is the exact model of your power supply?  What is the maximum output rating, in amps, on the +12V output?  This is very important.  It sounds like you might be on the edge and under certain circumstances, it isn't enough to get everything started correctly.  It sounds like you are getting intermittent memory errors and that can be caused by a weak power supply.  Also, are you OC'ing?  If so, what settings are using, I am interested mostly in your HTT speed and the vo,tages you are running the RAM and CPU at.
Also, I noticed that you have corsair RAM.  Corsair RAM has 100% satisfaction guarantee on their RAM.  As long as you haven't physically altered the PCB, they will replace or refund your money.  You should have no problem getting either a replacement or your money back.
good luck!!

  • Refind-efi 0.8.1-1 doesn't boot with custom refind.conf

Recently upgraded to refind-efi 0.8.1-1 and manually ran refind-install.
I usually have the option ¨default_selection "bzImage, vmlinuz"¨ enabled in refind.conf but after some trial and error I found refind wont load the default boot entry with this enabled any more.
    I moved
    /boot/refind_linux.conf
    and
    /boot/efi/EFI/refind/refind.conf
    and performed a ¨clean¨ refind-install.
If I select the default boot entry, with ¨default_selection "bzImage, vmlinuz"¨ enabled, refind shows the normal boot screen with standard options, but doesn't load the kernel. If I press F2 and select the boot with minimal options (in this case the same as standard options) the kernel boots instantly as expected.
If I use the standard refind.conf-file w/o ¨default_selection "bzImage, vmlinuz"¨ the default boot-entry with standard options works fine.
    Anybody able to reproduce?

    \hbar wrote:Strange... A rEFInd bug perhaps?
I suspect so, but would like to see it reproduced before I file a bug towards rEFInd.
\hbar wrote:When you select the arch entry, is the line that specifies the kernel and its version the same whether the default_selection is set or not?
Yep, the commandline options "ro root=UUID=836e34d6-bc33-4044-a337-372a3d240f49 quiet" plus initrd are the same in the "Booting OS"-screen, whether I select the default "Logo"-entry, or specify which options to boot with via F2.
    \hbar wrote:What if you set 'default_selection arch'?
    Don't think that's supported, and it doesn't work .
I've also tried "bzImage", "vmlinuz", and "vmlinuz-linux" seperately with the same result.
Should I file a bug now or wait until somebody experiences the same problem?

  • Adding 512mb ram doesn't boot up my MSI-6585!

My mobo is Max 648, MSI-6585 and I have Kingston KVR333X64C25/512 ram.  I had installed it in first slot, moving 256mb PC2700 to other slot.
It will not boot up, and there were diagnosis leds light up telling me it's a fault memory or not installed properly so I took it back to shop and exchanged for another one.
And had a go with it, iy's the same as before.
I have been downloading test report and it states that this ram will work!
Is there anything I am missing? ?(
    Installing ram should be straightforward??

Actually, 256mb pc2700 ram comes with motherboard works fine.
But my pc doesn't boot up with 512mb ram installed, even on its own (does boot up but produces some errors in windows XP)
However, I have checked everything and there's one thing i'm unsure about, I noticed that Hyper Threading is enabled on bios even though my intel CPU doesn't have HT.  I have disabled it but i haven't test 512mb ram yet (with HT disabled) as i need to know what is causing this ram problem.  Could enabling HT causes problem with rams or nothing at all?
I was contacted by Kingston support and they asked me if i have updated bios in my mobo and i checked, it's AMI 3.31a which is the latest at the moment as i have only received mobo a week ago.
But I have found other 648 Max mobo, MSI 6585 Mobo (without HT) it has bios version 1.5 as the latest.
My mobo manual logo say 648 Max (but didn't say HT)...could be mixed up?? ?(
But I assumed mine is 648 Max HT because my bios screen showed its AMI v3.31a which is like that since I receive this mobo.
Also could bios settings effect rams installed?

  • Thinkpad T440p BIOS Update Bootable CD doesn't boot

    Hi,
I want to update my laptop (Thinkpad T440p 20AW)bios to the latest version 2.24 released 04 Jun 2014, but I can't! As always I burn the iso file on a cd and try to boot with cd but after the first THINKPAD screen it doesn't go to the bios update screen and it returns to THINKPAD screen. I tried to install updates through an usb stick but the same. I mean moving(installing) the iso image on a usb and trying to boot with usb to update the bios but it doesn't work too. Here with F12 at boot time I choose the usb to boot but it doesn't boot and it returns to choose device list.
    Any advice?!

If the OS on your laptop is Windows 8 the most chance the cause is "Secure Boot" settings. It prevents the boot from external device by default.
Read the User Guide for your laptop, there are BIOS Setup menu settings descriptions.

  • K9N Platinum - Doesn't boot with PWR2 connected

    Hi,
    I've just built a new PC with a K9N Platinum Motherboard (7250 Ver 1.0)
    I immediately discovered a problem:
-If I connect to the power supply the PWR2 Molex (the additional power connector on the motherboard, to provide additional power to the video card) the system doesn't boot. Computer's LEDs get on for half a second, then it shuts down.
-If I deconnect the PWR2 connector, computer boots fine.
Bios already flashed to 1.51... no results.
It sounds weird to me. I have an Enermax Noisetaker II 485W PSU, the CPU is an Athlon X2 65W...
Have I got a damaged mainboard?
    Thanks for support

Just tried... nothing. Lights and fans turns on for half a second, then everything dies.
I tried to remove video card too, nothing changes :(
sound like somethink is shorted. try take board of case and retry. it maybe dumb question, but are you connect 4pin cable in a right direction?(i know its can be plugged in one way only, but if you use little more force can be done...)

  • My mac is slow, crashes if iPhoto is opened, doesn't boot sometimes

    Hello.
In the last time, my MacBook Pro is very slow and crashes sometimes if I open iPhoto or some other programs.
Sometimes, there comes a black display with some thin white lines and then I have to restart the computer.
Also, sometimes the mac doesn't boot right (you see only a grey display after the apple symbole).
I already repaired the system with Disk Utility and erased it to install a backup of my system.
    Thank you for your help!
    Best regards....

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

Since a week or so, my system doesn't boot, unless I press <enter> and the power button a few times during the process.

I am using mkinitcpio already: /boot/grub/menu.lst:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux
    root   (hd0,2)
    kernel /vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/hda4 ro
    initrd /kernel26beyond.img
    my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
    MODULES=""
    BINARIES=""
    FILES=""
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide filesystems"
I tried removing scsi and sata, since my root is on an ide disk. But the problem persists.
also recreating an image using mkinitcpio or reinstalling the kernel26beyond package using pacman doesn't help.
Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how this problem might be resolved.
It seems like a trivial issue since the systems basically works fine otherwise. However, I can't figure it out by myself, I have tried for a week.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I suddenly was having a lot of trouble booting. My system would just freeze with a blinking cursor. I thought it had something to do with my floppy drive because if I changed the boot priority in my bios to boot from the hard disk 1st, the system would boot but would hang for a very long time in areas, and as long as 5 minutes loading uevents. I suspected this was a udev problem.
I issued a few commands to reset udev, thinking maybe recent updates didn't take effect, which did the trick...
    # udevtrigger
    # udevcontrol reload_rules
After that, everything is back to normal. I'm still learning about udev and I'm still fuzzy about a lot of the techy stuff.

  • Tecra S1 doesn't boot and hangs at (boot) splash screen

    Tecra S1 Model PT831E-107EQ-GR
Problems started a month ago. It randomly didn't booted. After some power off/on tries it finally booted and worked properly. Because it happened more often I've bought a new hard drive (Toshiba 40 GB). I've had Acronis True Image and planned to make a disk clone to the new drive. The problem is that a notebook now doesn't boot anymore so I cannot boot it from A CD nor hard drive. It stops at "In Touch..." logo with "Press [F12] for the boot device selection menu" text and doesn't react any key. I tried to boot with no CD, no hard drive - the same. I also connected internal HD using ATA-To-USB adapter - the same. Does it mean that's not a disk problem but motherboard or other components? Is it possible to enter BIOS before boot selection screen?
    Regards,
    Jacek

Problem solved. There was a broken PCB under the CPU socket. I've found that pressing with my finger and holding CPU while booting allowed to startup the system while releasing the finger caused system hanging and its total crash. Our local service tried to repair it but with no success. Finally two days ago we've found a working motherboard (a used one) for about 200 USD and now I'm waiting for installing it in the laptop. Th regular price for a new one (about 400 Euro) is too much, but 200 USD is OK. I do like the laptop because of its ports (LPT, RS232). It's used for programming and controlling some older devices. Newer laptops have no LPTs nor RS232s and it's not easy to find a working USB adapter because the software we're using is even from DOS times and has hard-coded IRQs for those ports.
Anyway, I hope it'll back from the service fresh and new, and of course working ;)
    Thank you for your tips.

  • IBook G4 doesn't boot

    Hi,
I just bought a broken iBook G4 on eBay thinking I would be able to fix it without replacing the logic board. The iBook doesn't boot properly. When I press the power button, I can hear the SuperDrive start up, then the screen with the gray Apple shows up and the OS starts to load normally. But when that screen goes away and the blue background comes up, it just stops there... no "Loading Mac OS X" window with the progress bar. I figured that this may have been a deviation of the iBook G4 logic board problem where people used clamps to pin down the left side of the iBook and hold the faulty chip to the logic board, allowing the iBook to boot. I gave it a shot, but instead of using clamps I tried putting a small rubber shim on top of the faulty chip inside of the case to see if it would work. The first time I booted it up after I placed the shim, it worked fantastically. No hanging at the loading screen, no sluggish performance.
That was the way it worked for a couple of days. However, the booting problem soon returned. I tried booting from a Tiger reinstall disk to verify/repair the disk/permissions, but the iBook hung at the same blue screen. I didn't have the original install discs that came with the iBook, so I couldn't run a hardware test on it. I also tried booting from a Leopard install disk to no avail. Resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, and PMU did nothing as well. I even went so far as to replace the RAM in the expansion slot with RAM that I knew was working, but the iBook remained broken.
The strangest part of this was that the iBook worked perfectly on another computer when put into TDM. I was able to verify/repair both permissions and the disk from my Power Mac G5. Even though the iBook's screen becomes scrambled with random colors and lines after a few minutes in TDM, it functions just fine on another computer. I was even able to successfully boot my Power Mac and iMac from the iBook in TDM. Seeing as this was possible, I tried reinstalling Tiger on the iBook (in TDM) remotely from my Power Mac. It worked like a charm. Following that reinstall, I downloaded and installed all of the software updates. Then I tried to boot the iBook natively again, but to no avail. It still hung at that same blue screen.
At this point, I suspect that there is something wrong with the logic board that I am unable to fix without completely replacing the logic board itself. That's sort of disappointing, but I guess that's just the way it is. If anyone has any input to this, feel free to respond. Here are the iBook's specs:
    CPU: 1Ghz (1064Mhz)
RAM: 256MB soldered, 1 expansion slot open
    HDD: 30GB 4200 rpm
    Screen Size: 12 inches
    Optical Drive: Combo Drive
For the complete list of specs, see this page: http://support.apple.com/specs/iBook/iBookG4_Early2004.html
    Thanks,

    Trevor,
I just took the heatsink off and I see the GPU. However, there are multiple parts to it.
So that would be called a daughter card. The problem with a daughter card is that the possibility of a reballing/reflowing failure is increased.
Should I place a shim over the whole chip or just one part of it?
It's that whole daughter card that has the problem. I've got a post around here somewhere. Here's the thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6051715&#6051715
    The picture is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/3835w2
Also, what material should I use for a shim here?
Probably the most elegant solution would be to use thermal pads like the ones that are already there. Don't build them up too much.
    What about from underneath?
My fear is that a metal shim will short the GPU and damage the logic board permanently. But I also fear that an insulating shim will not conduct heat as it is supposed to and cause the GPU to overheat.
Dale at Superior says that chip doesn't put out much heat but better to be overly cautious. I wouldn't use metal since there's no give to it. What's directly under that 9200 daughter card? One of my thoughts was to shim from both sides.
Where did you put that first shim?

  • My macbook pro model A1226 doesn't boot up and the screen is black, ived try all reset commands with no luck, or try to go in safe mode, and nothing, please help

Help please, my macbook pro model A 1226 doesn't boot up, i hear the optical drive sound starting but no screen light or booting sound, ive'd tried all redet commands, and safe mode but no luck, can anyone give me an solution to my problem. Tnx

It looks as if there's a problem with your GPU. With a Retina machine, that would mean replacement of just about everything, except, perhaps, the flash storage drive.
Print you kernel panic when you go to your Apple Store appointment. I'm betting that it's a faulty GPU but they will be able to diagnose exactly where the problem lies.
    Good luck,

  • Mac doesn't boot after splitting BOOTCAMP drive under Windows 8.1

Macbook pro mid 2012, OS X Mavericks
I've installed Windows 8.1 x64 using Bootcamp assistant. In Windows I went to Disk Management and shrank drive C: from 200 GB to 94 GB and created a new drive D: from unallocated space.
After restart Windows doesn't boot giving some error and quickly restart. If I hold "Option" key I see only Windows. Mac OS X disappeared.
    How to fix?

So, I've tried 1001 ways to recover. Nothing worked. Interned Recovery gives -2002F error. Macbook pro 2012 can't boot from bootable DVD to use DiskWarrior, Drive Genius or similar. It can't boot from OS X Lion install DVD. I had only Windows PC to fix this. So
I asked a friend with latest Mavericks(which I had too) to make a Recovery USB and make a DMG file from it and send me over internet. Then I used the TransMac application under Windows and burned DMG on my USB stick. My god it worked. After 2 days of struggle I found this solution. I was able to boot from this USB stick into Recovery Mode and from there I can reinstall Mac Os X Mavericks. Somehow it sees my Ethernet cable and doesn't give error.
Note: that Disk Utility wasn't able to recover partitions. I tried to run DiskWarrior from terminal but it gave me an error. TestDisk didn't run too. So I'm doing a clean installation.
I could recover or backup my files using Paragon Mac Recovery Bootable DVD, but there was no need since it's my new macbook and I didn't have much files there.
Windows had changed the HD partition map from GUID Partition Table(GPD) to MBR. And made HD a "dynamic disk". This is why Mac Os wasn't able to boot.
If anyone knows how to convert a disk back to GPD and make Mac OS able to boot please let me know. I'm still installing Mac Os X on USB stick and didn't change my HD.

  • HP Stream 7-Windows 10 doesn't boot, I can't recovery 8.1 because can't boot from USB-HELP please!!

    Hi everybody, I'm new here!
I am (scuse me: WAS) enjoying a Stream 7
Some days ago I tried to install Windows 10 TP upgrading 8.1 with Bing. After some waiting time it succeeded, but unfortunately I forgave to put in the tablet's SSD the hp drivers, thinking they weren't necessary. So touchscreen, WiFi and all the other stuff didn't work. After I collegated via OTG a keyboard and a mouse I managed to use Windows 10.
Trying to install drivers, my fault, I opened an .exe of Realtek (maybe for the audio), tablet asked to reboot and after that I cannot access to Windows anymore.
I tried to boot Windows 8.1 from a USB, but it doesn't boot, the same even if i disable secure boot.
With disabled bitlocker Windows gives this error
In boot option I set these settings
I put the usb in this way:
The Stream doesn't consider the USB absolutely XD
If I enable again the secure boot Windows gives this error (that at 99% is caused by the .exe I installed):
Rebooting the Stream a couple of time with secure boot it goes in a menu (where touchscreen works) where there are a lot of options to reset Windows, but none of them works. If I try to format from this menu it asks for my account's password, but it doesn't accepts the mine :/
If I try to open the recovery (from volume minus button when it starts) it gives this message:
    Waiting for help,
    Thank you for your patience!
    This question was solved.

Hi everyone. I think I have found a solution to this problem. Short background story, I too tried to install Windows 10 (10049) via Windows Update but I was never successful - got stuck at around 30% for more than an hour. I tried to restore to 8.1 but it gave me that 0xc000000f error. Luckily I had made a recovery image to USB before updating to Windows 10.
Please note that by doing this method, you will obviously lose your data.
    Here's what you'll need:
    - Recovery USB (if you don't have one, grab it from this link and I thank you that person from another post). Follow the instructions, this is just basically clean, format to FAT32, set primary and active, and then drag and drop the files and folders from the USB folder to the root USB drive. This particular recovery is from a 5701 model, there is actually no difference between Stream 7 models in terms of hardware, but software is configured differently (different language setup/format) depending on the country/region it's sold.
    - OTG cable
    - Powered USB hub
    - USB Mouse and Keyboard
    - A moment of your time
    1. Plug in the OTG cable to the tablet, and then plug in the USB hub to power and to the OTG. After that, plug in the USB mouse and keyboard and Recovery USB to the USB hub.
    2. Boot the tablet to BIOS by holding down Power + Volume Down at the same time, until you reach the Startup Menu.
    3. Press F10 and navigate to System Configuration > Boot Options. In this menu, we'll have to restore the settings to default.
So if you have disabled Secure Boot, you first need to Clear All Secure Boot Keys and then Load HP Factory Default Keys. Then enable Secure Boot.
Make sure UEFI Boot Order is also default to as follows: OS boot Manager, USB Diskette, USB CD/DVD, Network Adapter.
If you did not make any changes, proceed to 4.
    4. Be prepared to go back to the Startup Menu, because as soon as you press F10 and hit Yes, the tablet will automatically restart. So press and hold the Volume Down button after you hit on Yes.
    5. Press F9 and select Boot From EFI File. If you've done the recovery image ghosting correctly onto the Recovery USB, you should see two entries. One should be RECOVERY and the other may depend (it could be SYSTEM or No label). Select RECOVERY, and then select bootmgr.efi.
At this point the tablet will boot off from the USB and will bring you to Windows Recovery.
    6. Select your keyboard layout, and navigate to Troubleshoot > Reset your PC.
If the drive partition/boot manager is not damaged, it will ask for a recovery key. You can actually skip this step and hide the numpad, revealing the option Skip this drive if you don't have the recovery key anymore, or just really want to start anew.
If the drive partition/boot manager is damaged, the Reset will proceed and will ask you to select a target operating system. In my case it was Windows 8.1.
    7. The next screen will be about Reset your PC telling you what's going to happen. Tap Yes > Yes, repartition the drives > Fully clean the drive > Reset.
The tablet will now do its thing and restore to factory default.
After restoration, a BIOS screen will come up asking if you want to clear the TPM keys. Select Yes, and this will create a new key for the restored installation, bringing you back to a fully factory default tablet.
    Notes:
I recommend not installing a generic Windows 8.1 ISO that is copied straight to the USB drive using the Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool or RUFUS. They won't be compressed or the same as WIMBOOT, which will take up more storage space than stock recovery.
You could actually install another version of Windows 8.1 on the tablet, assuming you know what you are doing (ie. making a WIMBOOT image).
You could also actually install Windows Technical Preview directly, again, assuming you know what you are doing.
This is just a guide to help you try recover your tablet from a failed Technical Preview installation. I hold no responsiblities over your actions.
What I recommend is that use 8.1 for now, and wait for the official release (or at least a more stable Technical Preview release for this tablet if you can't wait that long) of Windows 10.

  • IBook doesn't boot

My iBook (1.2Ghz, late 2004) doesn't boot anymore since yesterday. I treid to reset the battery (by using it until empty, and recharging it) but when my iBook shut dow (when the battery was empty) it didn't boot anymore.
    I tried:
    -to zap the PRAM (optioncommand+PR)
-to do the hardware test (while holding C)
    -to enter open-firmware (optioncommand+OF)
    -resettig PMU
    neither of these suceeded.
I also don't hear the startup chime.
Is there anything else I can do to try and boot it?
Before this it booted without problems, I don't understand why I can't even get in the open firmware.
alltough my iBook is out of warranty, I suspect this to be a fabrication fault, will I have to pay if I let it repair? (I was planning to buy another MacBook Pro, don't know if I can trust apple products enough to buy them again. This isn't my first problem, I had one of the bad batteries where apple started a exchange program for)

The indicator LED's at the bottom of the battery say it has, and the illuminated ring of the adapter is also lit green.

  • IPad doesn't boot!! Apple logo freeze!!

    Hello,
I've received one iPad that has been used by one of my Staff Directors. Now this iPad is going to be used by another person, so like ever I've reseted all the content (data, configuration, etc), but now the iPad doesn't boot and it is all the time showing the apple logo (it seems that the reset was fine, at least the process bar arrived to completed it and the iPad rebooted itself).
My Macbook PRO doesn't recognize the iPad when I am connecting it by USB cable, I've tried to hard reset as well with the same result: iPad is freeze booting with the apple logo.
So I can't connect the iPad to my Mac, so my iTunes can't recover the iPad, with the hard reset I obtain the same result...
What can I do? Could you help me, please?
    Thanks in advance,
    Best regards

First try to do a reboot, hold down sleep button until you see the slide to turn off screen. Do that, the hold down sleep button until you see apple logo pops up. If that does not work, then...
Google "put iPad in recovery mode". This should allow you to connect it to iTunes, which should ask if you want to restore your iPad. After that, you may be asked if you want to restore from back up. Say NO, since you want a clean slate.
