MOVED: Overcloking E8400/ Msi P7N sli platinium

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=120686.0

Hello
I have already read lot of review of overcloking. So i decided to overclok too .
For my case i think that i have discover the problem but i am not shure . I have read in a review of the MSI P7N Platnium that the motherbord can not go above 1333Mhz of FSB . I have a E8400 so it's by defautlt at 1300Mhz. What do you think ???
Another question is how can i know the ratio between my FSB and my memory ??? It can help me for the OC beacause i can try to reduce the frequency memory and try to see if i can exeed 1300Mhz of Front Side Bus. In cell menu i have the choise of auto , linked and manuel . When i choose linked i don't know the ratio so i can't know how my memory frequency is calulated when i change the FSB of my CPU.  Try to help me here if someone can .
Don't forget i have a corsair PC26400 (800Mhz) so i can't go above 400Mhz . My timing according to CPU-Z  in EPP : 4-4-4-12-2T at 2.1V
My last question is i have try to overclok directly in OS whith setFSB . But i don't know the PLL of the Msi P7N sli platinium. Can someone tell me what is it ?? I am trying to know if i can increase the FSB directly in windows Mode. Of course i will change my frequency memory in the BIOS to 275Mhz           ( according to CPUZ it it's possible) to not be limited by my memory and especially because i don't Know the ration DRAM:FSB .  I think it's more easily and more safe .
When i let the bios in auto i read in CPUZ a ration DRAM:FSB = 5:6 which is normal because the bus is at 333Mhz and my memory 400Mhz. But i choose linked i don't know if the ratio is the same when i change the FSB ??
Can you suggest me another program inside of SetFSB ???
If someone tell me that i can't increase 1300Mhz in this motherboard so i will stop here to oc and not loose my time.
Thanks ...

  • Overcloking E8400/ Msi P7N sli platinium

    Hello Everybody
I am french and i am trying to OC may E8400 to 3g6 for the moment. This is my spec :
    PSU : Thermaltake 750W
    Corsair PC26400 (800Mhz) : Timing : 5-5-5-18 at 1.9V
CPUZ tells me that i have a EPP timing : 4-4-4-12 at 2.1V Do i have to use this timing or the SPD timing ??
    E8400 FSB = 1333Mhz
    So my ratio is FSB/RAM = 5/6
So i am going to the BIOS in Cell Menu . I disabled the DOT , the EINST and the spectrum.
I disabled auto for manuel in cpu clock. I put the FSB to 400Mhz so 1600 in the bios. I change the timing to 5-5-5-18.
After i change the Cpu Voltage to 1.22V , the memory to 2.1V and i increase the VTT , NB Voltage a little . But i dont touch the SB voltage.
I save and when i restart my pc freeze and i have to reset the CMOS . It tells mis that my overcloking as failed but i don't know what is wrong ??? The FSB can go to 1600 without a problem no ?
My second question is how to make the ratio 1:1 . I was thinking that if put the fsb from 333 to 400 i will have  a ratio of 1:1.
    Thanks for the Help.

  • Bluescreen problem on MSI P7N SLI PLATINIUM

    Hi!
I tried to look for similar posts here but I couldn't find one so I posted my own:
I bought this system about 6 moths ago. I had similar problems in the beginning too but now I can't find a way to solve them.
When installing XP everything is fine. After installing some drivers (GPU, IDE etc) I start getting this bluescreen note and system reboots. Sometimes it does it in the black loading scene, sometimes when antivirus is starting in windows or sometimes even 30 secs later.
    The bluescreen note is: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
(I suppose that has been the issue from start, can't remember...)
Anyway. 6 moths ago when I first installed and had these problems I heard/read somewhere that with this set of mobo and cpu one shouldn't use any of the drivers that were on the cd. I downloaded newer drivers and with some tricks (can't really remember excactly what I did, maybe installed some old driver as well..?) I got it stabilized. At some point I flashed my BIOS to 1.11 (I think) and that might have helped as well.
Then a couple of days ago I flashed my BIOS to 1.2 and the problem occured again. Don't ask me why I flashed.... I'm too embarrased to tell you!
Now I have installed OS again, tried various sets of drivers, tried to manually set RAM speed (though I'm not sure I did it right) but nothing seems to help.
PS. Missing from my list of components is a Creative Live 1024 sound card. This time I might have got the computer stabilized( didn't test it for that long)  but installing the sound card brought the problem back. I need to have a SB to install Avid and thats why I installed that card.

    No I haven't OC'd.

    Do memory check with >>Memtest86<<
    I'll try that next.
PS: I'm in normal mode now for the first time since yesterday. I moved graphic card to the dark blue slot PCIE1 (used to be in light blue PCIE2, can't remember why... sorry). Just a few reboots and I managed to load windows normally. I'll try some software now to see if it's stable.

  • Msi p7n sli platinum Maybe faulty?

I have built most of my rig only need to order a few more parts (hard drive, dvd drive), i decided plugged in everything to see if i can boot into the bios everything happily turn on like my fans the NB, SB and ram we getting warmer.
I couldn't see a image since i need to change my graphics adapter to pci in the bios(don't have onboard) then i noticed my keyboard wasn't turned on tryed 2 usb and 1 ps2 none of them worked.
Other help: I used 1 ram stick and it's not the power supply that's faulty tested it on another machine.
Could it be a faulty Cpu?
    Motherboard fault?
What other problems could it be or should i wait untill i have a hard drive to try again?
    My hardware is e8400.Msi p7n sli platinum.4 gb DDR2 Crucial Ballistix PC8500 1066mhz.
All help will be great thanks!

What kind of video card are you using?
    What PSU are you using?
Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU and test with one memory module only.

The system does not need a hard drive or optical in drive in order to start-up properly.  If everything is fine, you should be able to enter BIOS Setup without having any drives attached.  Forget about drives for now.
If nothing changes, please test the board outside the computer case on a non-conducting surface with only one stick of RAM, a video card, your CPU and the power connectors attached to it (well, hook up a keyboard as well).

  • P7N Sli Platinium and E8400 issue

    Hello,
    I just built a new config :
    P7N SLI Platinium
    E8400 (SLB9J)
    DDR 2 1Go*2 Kensington
    Nvidia 9600 GT
    HDD SATA Seagate
And here is what i get :
    A7380NMS V1.1 022508
    Intel Core 2 CPU     E8400  @  3.00GHz, Speed 333x9=2997 MHz
    DRAM Frequency For DDR2 800 (Dual-Channel)
    Initializing USB Controllers ... Done.
    2048 MB OK
Press DEL key to enter Setup Menu, F11 to enter boot menu
    And that's all !!
Can't go further, i tried every slot of ram, they all works, i removed everything, no solution...
I read here and there that it might be a Bios Firmware problem, but is that correct, because i've got no other 775 CPU to boot...
    Thanks for your help!

And last thing, i guess it will work also if i flash with the 1.3 version ? Is there any intrest ?
Yes go for 1.3 it should works.

Or maybe it's possible to flash from a usb key directly from the bios ?
No, but you can do your USB key bootable and proceed with BIOS update.
Prepare the USB key in another mainboard.

    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=119615.0
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=120513.0
I've carried out the same out-of-box tests indicated in 119615.0 without success.
    Question:
Is it possible to force the existing system to boot to the FDD where the BIOS upgrade (v 1.2) would be stored ready for use? If yes, kindly outline the necessary steps to be carried out and please point me to the correct BIOS upgrade link for this configuration. If all else fails, MOBO can be exchanged but if BIOS can be upgraded via this method, I prefer this approach. I don't have access to an alternative CPU, so that approach is far less than ideal. Thanks for your assistance.

Is it possible to force the existing system to boot to the FDD where the BIOS upgrade (v 1.2) would be stored ready for use?
Yes, in theory it is possible to try an AMI BIOS Recovery Flash. However, in case their are other problems that are not visible because of the current problem, it is rather risky.  If there is a memory problem or something similar that is currently undetected, the system may crash during flashing and your board will be rendered useless.
    Quote
f yes, kindly outline the necessary steps
    What you need:
    - you need an internal floppy drive (properly connected to the board and 100% intact)
    - you need an empty & formated floppy disk (make sure you check it for errors before you use it)
    - you need a PS/2 Keyboard
    What you have to do:
    - download the latest BIOS-Archive file from here:
    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1373
    - extract the BIOS File (e.g. A7380NMS.120), rename it to AMIBOOT.ROM [not AMIBOOT.120.ROM] and copy it to the floppy disk
    - insert the prepared floppy disk into the floppy drive attached to the P7N SLI Platinum and Clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU
    - start the system and hit CTRL + HOME to force the system into recovery mode
If that does not work, try a different floppy drive & disk.  Don't complain is the system crashes during flashing if the recovery flash starts (system stability is your responsibility).
If you can't get the recovery routine to start and read the AMIBOOT.ROM file from the floppy disk, you need to install a supported processor.

  • Help with ram slots on MSI P7N SLI PLATINUM

    rig config:
    MSI P7N SLI PLATINUM (MS-7380)
    bios version: 1.3v
    Q6600 quard core 2.66GHz
    Zotac modded 9800GTX+ amped version
    2x2 Gb DDR2 800MHz Kingston
500 watt (absolute) power supply (taken form an old HP workstation)
    windows 7 X64
    Everything's on stock setting
Its been almost 1 & 1/2 years since i bought this rig, and from first month itself i have been having problem with the ram. The problem is not with the sticks, its with the ram slots. There are different things that happen. Sometimes when i boot my system:
    1) either, it wont start, i.e. no boot screen.
    2) It will load upto windows startup screen, crash and restart in an infinite loop.
    3) It will load windows, then crash after sometime.
    4) If i run any memory diagnostic, it will give errors.
At these times, i take out my 2 ram sticks, tinker with them, place them in different combination of ram slots, try push them in, in a certain way, keep trying until it yields and it boots up again ( generally a process of 1/2 an hr to an hr). After this my system will work fine ( no errors on any memory diagnostic) and boot properly for a week or 2, maybe even a month, but then again the same problem happens. I know for sure that there is no problem with my dimms (have checked them in other system and they work fine), its something to do with ram slots, or memory bus-controller structure.
Recently the problem happened again, though my tinkering didn't help. My system only boots up if i place any of the ram sticks in the 3rd slot (the 1st orange one). It wont work for any other slot and neither will it work if i place both of the sticks together. I have tried resetting my bios as well cmos settings, but it has not helped. My mb is still in warranty, but if i give it for repair, it will be gone for a good month or so, which doesn't go well with me. If someone has any suggestions, or a way out, it will be highly appreciated. Please help!

yes the psu has a single +12v rail with 21A rating, but somehow i don't feel the problem is because of it. When my system successfully boots, it works properly. I can play or work on high performance softwares for any number of hours without fail, which ought not to happen if the psu is bad.
Hmm, you are ignoring the possibility that your PSU is "flaky" (that's a technical term)!!!! You've never had any gizmo where "sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work"?
If you don't want to buy a new PSU then at least beg-borrow-steal another one and see if your symptoms change.

  • MSI P7N SLI - PC Wont Boot - Video error code but changing graphics card no help

((Apologies, I think this should be in the forum for Intel Core 2 Duo/Quad boards))
Hi. Brief description of the issue.
Last Saturday there was fan noise. I ignored that, left the machine on, went out. By Sunday morning the machine had turned itself off. I opened it up, identified the problem as the graphics card fan, failed to fix but put the PC back on figuring I'd have to see about a new card soonish.
Later on it had turned itself off again. Got to bios with a system32 config error. I figured that was why it'd been shutting off and went through the long process of manual recovery from that. Turned the computer on, all good, played games.
Until I thought to check the GFX temp... 133 degrees Celcius. Turned it off right away, ordered replacement card - which has now arrived.
But the machine won't boot at all. I get one long tone then two short. This is the same with both the old and the new cards. Blue light comes on, all the fans come on, then the beeps.
But the 'long' isn't long like if it was a RAM issue. I'm googling AMI bios post codes and seeing 1 long + 2 short is a video error, but also that '3 beeps' is a memory problem.
I've swapped my RAM sticks around and tried each stick individually and get the same beep code.
I've reset the CMOS by holding in the button on the back for 5 seconds, with the power cable unplugged and after discharging the capacitors.
The only other suggestions I've found is that it could be a failure of the PSU to power the card. But it should be giving ample power.
Now I am stuck for ideas.
    MSI P7N SLI, MS-7380
    Intel Q6600
    Antec Neopower Blue Modular PSU

    OCZ Platinum 2GB (2*1) DDR2 800
    Western Digital HDD
    LiteOn DVD Rom
    Windows XP

With a 94000GT (no power connector from PSU) the machine is now running.
But there's still a problem somewhere (and that's a pretty poor graphics card I don't want to be stuck with) so I'm still keen to find out what to do, or what's wrong.
My 650W Antec with 2 12 volt rails should have no issues powering the other cards.

Somebody had luck to overclock Q9300 on P7N-SLI Platinum ? please post info

Try with mem settings auto and only adjust Vdimm to vendorspecs.
Did you try BIOS V1.1 from MSI : http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1373
This did solve some memory issues.
If so try, if you can, QVL memory and see if problem persists.
Hope this helps  , good luck and keep us posted
Also be sure that your on manual and not linked, this will give problems too, when fsb divider gets higher then memory divider.
Furthermore, by using non qvl mem, the NB and fsb vtt are very depending on eachother.
I had the same with my board  , the only difference with yours is the cirque pipe cooling and an extra chip for yorkfield support  , but it is do-able

    Hello,
I have a mainboard MSI P7N SLI Platinum that doesn't boot. I connected it out of the case, tried different CPU's, different PSU's, different graphic cards, different memory modules ... all without success.  When I connect the PSU a red LED goes on, when I try to boot it a blue LED goes on and the CPU cooler starts turning, nothing else happens, no beeps, nothing on the monitor ...
I also tried downloading the latest bios, put it on a floppy and named it AMIBOOT.ROM, than connecting an internal floppy drive and press ctrl-home while powering on (found this hint on the forum).  Nothing happens, nothing on monitor, no activity on floppy drive (even tried different floppy drives and cables  )
Does anyone know something else I can try?

I had this same exact problem today. All seemed to work but nothing on monitor.  I first thought my graphics card is the issue, but the fan was turning so i decided not to think that was it.
I had a dvi to vga adapter on the other end of the  graphics card cable, so i was thinking if that was the issue. I changed the cable to dvi/dvi and WOW, it worked!!!
I dont know if this is the MSI mother board issue or my graphics card CLUB 3D 8800gt, but that fixed it and it has been on for 5 hours now.
But what i came here to ask was the on board LEDS. Is it normal to have RED and BLUE led?
The red led looks like it's a wrning of some kind but it comes on when you turn on the PSU.  So is it ok to have these lighting?

  • MSI P7N SLI Platinum CPU Power Socket

I have a MSI P7N SLI Platinum and I just noticed I dont have a 8pin power plug on my ATX PSU ( this PSU is in my AMD rig)
I've just had a go of trying out my MSI P7N SLI Platinum board as a computer shop said just insert the 4 pin plug you used on your AMD board near the CPU..
I questioned him about it leaving 4 sockets bare, he said it would be fine..
Well I've tried booting up the rig and I get nothing on the screen (No Signal ) checked all sockets (graphics card, cpu)
I do get a little red and blue light on the board and the CPU fan and graphics fan are running fine,, but no signal...
I'm using a Intel Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz Processor Socket 775 which I know is fine,,,
Any views on this "you can use a 4pin plug on the 8pin CPU power socket " ?
Could this be the reason my rig is not booting ?
    THanks

"Any views on this "you can use a 4pin plug on the 8pin CPU power socket " ?"
Yes you can. Make sure that 4pin cable is connected properly at correct side of 8pin socket.
"Could this be the reason my rig is not booting ?"
Nop. You can plug 8pin CPU cable if you want to test opposite Should boot with both 4 or 8.

DDR2-1250 is an overclocking rating.  The memory modules should run fine @DDR2-800.  Maybe you can stably overclock the modules to higher speeds, however, nobody can really guarantee you that those sticks will be able to operate @DDR2-1250 (625 MHz) on this board/chipset.

  • MSI P7N SLI-FI LGA 775 nForce 750i startup booting problems

    Hi there!
My PC is about 1.5 years old.
Now last 3 weeks I'm having some frustrating problem when starting my PC.
Issue: my computer starts now only when there is 2 Gb total memory on motherboard.
If there´s 3 Gb or 4 Gb memory on motherboard, then I won´t even get a Bios startup screen.
(but i can see and heard that PSU and CPU fans are working)
I tried all memory modules on, separately using only one memory module. All memory modules and every slot seems to be ok.
I also try Memtest86 (with one memory module Separately) no errors found.
Motherboard PCI-E slots and graphics card are also ok.
(because my PC works like a charm when there´s only total 2 Gb memory on motherboard)
Why my PC only starts when there´s 2 Gb memory on motherboard?
Any help will be appreciated deeply!

I know the 7600GS doesn't recommend a PSU with a lot of power(15 - 17 A), but you're running two of them in SLI.  Your PSU only has 18A on the +12V rail. This could very well be your issue.  Below are some good single +12V rail PSUs, Corsairs and PC Power & Cooling.  You can also look for Silverstone single rail PSUs, but they tend to be pricier.  If you can't get anything other than split-rail, post back and we'll try to make some recommendations.
