 What you say you have:
 "MSI P67A-GD65 B3 iP67, SATA600 RAID, USB3.0
Which one is it you actually have?

    CPU-Z showed 666mhz.
I've clocked the RAM down to 533mhz, leaving it with the same slow timings it used for 666mhz, and its been completely stable for about a week now. I've not had chance to try the latest BIOS update (1.4) or overvolting the RAM at 666mhz, I'll get round to those at some point in the next week or two. Everything is working now though so I'm rather reluctant to mess with it.

Yes, and run it at 9-9-9-24 1.5v.
Disconnect that Seagate hard drive and see if you have any problems still. Looks like that drive could be failing though. A failing hard drive can certainly cause problems on start-up.

Thank you for your reply. You are right. The bad news for me is it's a Palit and it was shipped without any information except a nvidia installation guide and cd. No audio drivers, no vtune and Palit is almost imposable to contact.

  • Trim Support in RAID 0 on a P55-GD65

I have some confusion regarding TRIM support in RAID 0. I have 2x80 GB Intel X-25M G2 SSDs in RAID 0 on a P55-GD65 mobo. I am not using a RAID card, and my OS is Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I just flashed the latest firmware update for the drives. According to the Intel SSD Toolbox, TRIM is not enabled. I have the latest Intel Chipset Drivers from Intel's site rather then the MSI downloads center. After doing some reading it sounds like if I back up my data, set the drives to ACHI rather then RAID, rebuild the array, and restore my back up, the drive will support TRIM. Is that correct?

If I am not mistaken, "TRIM" is generally a no-go in RAID-Mode conigurations.

  • Advice RAID Setup MacPro 2009

    Hi
I'm after advice on 3 things regarding the setup of my 2009 Mac Pro -
1/ When I bought my secondhand 2009 Mac Pro the Apple RAID card battery was dead and I was wondering if because I'm using RAID 0 would I be better off using the RAID software as I am running out of PCIe ports and feel that a future Black Magic card my be of more benefit?. Is there a significant speed difference between the hardware & software RAIDS or is Hardware really for Raid 5 or 10? I have also heard of issues with the Apple RAID card relating to having to run your computer 24/7.
2/ I have decided to invest in a PCIe SSD card to be my boot disc (I had such a massive boost in speed when I installed a new SSD in my 2008 Mac Book Pro and a PCIe version could be even faster). This will free up one of the 4 1TB hard drives. So I was wondering (taking into account that to be employment ready I want to run AVID/FCX & PremPro) what should my RAID setup be. I have always gone with RAID 0 for speed (as long as it's properly backed up) but I'm open to suggestions.
    1TB Scratch Disc + 3TB RAID 0 Data Disc
    2TB RAID 0 Scratch Disc + 2TB RAID 0 Data Disc
3TB RAID 0 Scratch Disc + 1TB Data Disc [Although I already have just over 1TB of data, so maybe not this option]
3/ I have heard some people talk about using partitioning as a way to ensuring that the fastest part of the disc is utilised. Is there any truth to this? And if so any advice?
    Thanks folks!
    Mac Pro Details [Early 2009]
    2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
ATI Radeon HD a870 512 MB [Slot 1]
Apple 2 Port 4Gbps Fibre Channel Card [Slot 2] (which I'm thinking of getting rid of for the SSD)
    2 x USB 3.0 + 2 x eSata inputs [Slot3] (on order from OWC)
Apple RAID Card [Slot 4] (dead battery, I would be better off with a Black Magic card maybe)
    4 x 1TB 7200rpm Hard Discs being 1 x WDC WD10EALX-009BA0 (my current boot disc) + 3 x WDC WD1001FALS-41K1B0 (currently in RAID 0, no separate scratch disc)
I have 3 x one hourly archival backups (via Carbon Copy Cloner) of each Disc with one of them stored off site and rotated once a month. That's 6 backups all together at the moment.
    What I use it for
Sports photography editing and processing – [Lightroom & Photoshop]
Video editing – [Like I said to be employment ready I try to use all of the big 3 AVID, FCX & PremPro. Also Motion & After Effects]
Graphic Design – [Photoshop, Illustrator & Indesign]
Web Design – [Most of the above plus Dreamweaver & Fireworks]
    Audio – [ProTools]

"There is a thread dedicated to issues with OWC card."
Just going by this website seems the issues are with models prior to 2009 i.e. 3.1 models as opposed to 4.1 which it what mine is.
"and just what to put in 3 "optional" slots."
Well if I take out both the Fibre Channel Card as well as the Apple RAID that will be my dilemma
"MacPerformanceGuide maxes out his system with dual OWC PCIe SSDs and RAM but then he needs to and wants/ needs 960GB SSD on each card to create 1.8TB of fast scratch."
Actually the PCIe SSD I had in mind was the 480GB based on about 40% usage of my current boot disc. Not sure this is large enough or a better option for a scratch disc than a 1TB 7200 or 2x 1TB RAID0?
Are we saying that PCIe SSD is generally unreliable or just unreliable as a boot disc?

  • Request for Advice re RAID Setup  / Backup Options

I would be grateful for any comments on my RAID setup, or suggestions for improvement:
I have four LaCie Firewire drives. Each is 250 GB. Two are the Porsche design, and the other two are the ones designed to stack under (and resemble) the mac Mini. I'd like to not buy any additional storage hardware at this time.
I have two main needs for storage -- (1) my iTunes library, which is mostly Apple Lossless, and (2) backup of my PowerBook. These two needs presently take up about 300 GB.
Currently, all four hard drives are connected to a mac Mini. Both of the two pairs of hard drives is configured through OS X Disk Utility as RAID 0. Consequently, two fire wire drives of roughly 500 GB each show up on the mini's desktop. I mainly use the mini as a jukebox -- the video out connects to my TV, and the audio out connects to my receiver (through a buggy as he.ll M-Audio Transit, but that's another story). So the iTunes library for the mini lives on one of the RAID drives.
The other RAID drive serves as a backup. Using Silverkeeper, I incrementally backup the music library. Silverkeeper also backs up my PowerBook, when it is on the network.
Does this sound like the best way to go, if you accept that I don't want to get into a hardware RAID solution for now? Does OS X allow for software RAID 0+1? In other words, can I RAID the two pairs of drives independently as they are now, and then have them mirror each other? I'm not really worried about accidental file deletions and the like -- my biggest concern is one of these hard drives failing. If RAID 0+1 is available through software, is that advisable? Are there other alternatives I should be thinking about?
Any comments on this will be very helpful. Thanks in advance for your time.

    Hi, PJP.
My take on RAID: Unless you're running a high-availability transaction server, IMO RAID is overkill for the home or SOHO (Small Office / Home Office) user. It's "cool" and has a certain amount of "geek" cachet, but as far as being practical for the average user, it adds an unnecessary level of complexity.
You may have specific reasons why you've decided to implement RAID, but from what you've described as what you're doing with your Macs, I don't really see the need for it.
Like you, I run backups to FireWire drives of all our Macs. I maintain at two current backups for each system, one backup per FireWire drive. This gives me the same kind of drive-failure protection for my backups without having to go the RAID route.
For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Advice on memory please..... [P55-GD65]

    Hi,
Something went terrible wrong last saturday.  Installed a new P55-GD65/I7-860, everything went fine until flashing new BIOS (v1.2 > 1.4) with MFlash (I know now, after visiting this forum, I shouldn't have done that). Motherboard seems dead now. (no video-output, tried CMOS-reset, 1 stick of mem, other Videocard, but no sign of life except some leds above the mem burning; fans and so on also working)
Maybe I'll send it back to MSI-support here in Holland to reflash it, but I already ordered a new GD-65.  Just wandering around this forum I understand there's also a lot of hassle about memory. I'm using this: Kingston KHX1600C9D3K2/2G   2GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECCCL9 (Kit of 2)    9-9-9-27   1.7-1.9V and a pair of 4G (2x 2G) of the same kind. Will this give troubles? If not, what's the best advice on V(oltages), 2T/1T, and that kind of stuff? Oh, basically no intention to overclock.......
    TIA
(Rest of stuff: PSU: CoolerMaster RealPower650 GPU: Radeon 3870/512, system(CPU/GPU) = watercooled)

1.7v to 1.9v is too high for the RAMs. I would suggest that you set to 1.6v max in BIOS for your RAMs.
I've tried to do that but cant find the way to access manual  any cpu or memory voltage  ..its always disable..
    bios version 1.5
    how to do that?

  • P55 GD65 - Advice

When I first installed new system, everything was running fine. Enabled XMP in bios and memory was running stable at proper timings and voltage.
Unrelated to the memory, I was having problems with the nvlddmkm error, where the screen goes black for a second followed by the message “nvlddmkm.sys has recovered from an error”. Somehow I was able to get rid of that problem but it was replaced by the same symptom, being caused by a services.exe login.
Anyway both of these events cause the video card memory controller load to spike to 100% and stay there until the system is restarted. Video card people said to update bios and see what happens.
So, after updating bios, (from 1.2 to 1.7) system is fine at auto settings (9-9-9-24-2t). If I enable XMP, I get two or three restarts…system stays on, but no video.
I’m just an old guy doing cadd work,  looking for a stable system.
Anyone know what version bios for this board allows XMP to work?
If anyone has any suggestions on the nvlddmkm or services.exe login I will take those too.
    Thanks

You could try to raise the CPU VTT voltage a little.

  • Pros and cons to JBOD/N-RAID setup on MacBook Pro with two internal SSDs

First, to clarify, in this case, I mean the term "JBOD/N-RAID" to refer to a concatenated or spanning set of drives as supported by OS X and Disk Utility.
I've got an original Apple-installed 120GB 3G (3Gb/s) SSD which I'll be moving into the optical bay using an OWC "Data Doubler" and swapping a new 240GB OWC Mercury Electra 6G (6Gb/s) SSD into the main drive bay.
My goal is to avoid having two separate volumes.
Understand that a RAID 0 array would essentially only perform as well as the slowest drive in the array (the 3G SSD in this case), if it would even work at all given the two drives are not identical in make and capacity.
I've read that a JBOD/N-RAID array isn't subject to the "same make and capacity" constraints. But how does this setup perform?
Would the speed of the 6G be hobbled, slowed down to the 3G's speed (or worse?), if I were to set up the two SSDs as a JBOD/N-RAID array?
Is this even a recommended idea - that is, paying for the convenience of having one virtual volume by adding the complexity (and risks?) of a JBOD / N-RAID setup?

I am following your advice and attempting to install Bonjour. I wasn't sure where to install it so I am following the VMWare Knowledge Base #1003814: Sharing a printer with a Windows virtual machine using Apple Bonjour.
I have copied it below to refer to because I've run into a problem.
    I have completed steps 1 a-d.
The Problem: Step 1 e. Click Printers. Printers is not shown under Removable Devices. When I try to Add Device (Printers) it says "New Devices cannot be added until the Virtual Machine is Shut Down and then Resumed." I have shut down the Virtual Machine alone, I've shut down AMware Fusion and I've shut down both Windows and Mac. Nothing has changed when I try and add Printers so I can do Step e.
I sure hope someone can help.
To configure a printer connected to your Mac for use with the Bonjour utility and a virtual machine in Fusion:
Configure your virtual machine for Bridged Networking and disable ThinPrint:
    Click Virtual Machine > Settings.
    Click Network (Adapter).
Enable Bridged Mode. In Fusion 5.x, select Autodetect under Bridge networking.
    Click Show All.
    Click Printers.
    Set printer sharing to Off.
    Click Close.
    Reboot the virtual machine.
Install Bonjour for Windows. Download and install Bonjour for Windows in the virtual machine. Bonjour is available from Apple at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL999.
Note: The preceding link was correct as of January 20, 2010. If you find the link is broken, provide feedback and a VMware employee will update the link.
Share the printer in Mac OS:
    Open System Preferences.
    Click Print and Fax.
Select the printer you want to share, and select Share this printer.
To configure the printer in the guest operating system with the Bonjour Utility:
    Double-click the Bonjour Printer Wizard.
    Click Next.
Under Shared printers select the printer you want to use.
    Click Next.
    Click Finish.

  • Cold startup windows 7 hang p55 gd65 2133MHz RAM

    Hey guys,
    Looking for some advice here,
Basically i can't get my RAM to work properly anywhere near rated speed. I have it in an overclocked i5 setup @ 3.7GHz with 185 bclk (p55 gd65 v1.0 BIOS)
Hence my memory options are 1110MHz, 1480MHz or 1850MHz depending on the multiplier.
To get the correct timings i loaded the XMP and then went to manual timings and subsequently disabled the XMP so it is running at rated 9-9-9-28, every one of the above timings should be well within specification. I have the memory @ 1.65v also.
    At 1110MHz everything is fine.
When i up it to 1480 or 1850 i get a 'cold startup bug' for lack of a better name. i.e. windows will load and then hang, generally with a blank greeny-blue screen. if i restart the machine, it runs fine from then on.  If the machine is restarted again it is fine, its only after it has been off for a significant period that i get this hang. After a restart ive prime blend tested for 15hrs without a hitch @ 1850MHz.
As everything is totally stable after this first failed load, it doesnt seem like anything is faulty per se, but just something isnt being detected correctly at this first attempt which is making me think it could be BIOS related.  I have a release day board with v1.0 and im considering m-flashing to the latest v1.5.  In v1.4 notes it states "Improved memory compatibility", could that be where my solution lies.  I fully understand the risks associated with BIOS flashing so i wanted i few opinions on the problem if at all possible before i do something i could regret.....
Cheers for any help you guys can provide!

  • P55-GD65 Problem Freezes / Shuts Down unexpextedly

    Hi all,
I've recently received a replacement P55-GD65 part for my pc upgrade. The first mobo was broken but I'm not sure wether the current one is any better.
I have a freezing problem with my set up. After I power up it goes to post and lauches windows. However, within 5 to 10 minutes the system just shuts down on its own. Sometimes this happens already in BIOS when I've been looking around for a solution for some time.
After power down pressing the power button doesn't help. I have to disconnect power cord from PSU and wait a bit before reconnecting for the power button to work again.
I've been reading other posts and people have the similar problems, but none of the solutions have resolved my problem.
I've tried putting OC genie on - no solution.
I've tried using only 1 memory - no solution. and yes I've taken the memories out and reincerted them.
I've tried setting BIOS to optimized defaults - no solution.
I've tried setting memory speed down from Geil automatic 1333MHz to 1060MHz - no solution.
I've tried setting memory voltage up from Geil automatic 1,5V to 1,6V - no solution.
I've tried taking CPU out and replaced it in the socket - no solution.
I've updated Intel drivers from MSI website.
I've updated other drivers from the CD that came with the mobo.
    BIOS version is 1.3
There has been a lot of discussion about corsair memory modules but none about the GEIL ones I have. Has anyone experience with the memory I have? According to MSI website P55-GD65 is tested with a dual setup of 2g Geil memory that I have, and should be ok.
Can anyone lend a hand so that I can get my pc running. This has by far been the most troublesome upgrade for me.
    Thanks for replies!

  • Adding to Raid setup

I did a search, but didn't come up with anything on this.
I currently have a Raid Striping setup with two drives.  I picked up another two drives, and now want to change to Mirroring with Striping.  When I press F10 for the Raid setup menu, and select the two new drives to go into the array, I get an invalid drive number error, or something like it.
I have not run Fdisk or anything on the new drives.
Is it possible to convert this Raid setup, or do I have to start over and build it new?

Look at the options in nvraidman, which runs in Windows. If your moving from striping to mirrored + striping it might just offer this option to convert, particularly if you have identical drives. Furthermore you should be able to hotwire the new drives in.
Post back and let us know what you do.

    Hello,
I have MB P55-GD65, i bought 2 HDD Segate Baracuda 1Tb, and i want to connect tham in Raid0. I change everyting in bios for that, appears screen there i must hit ctrl+i, i creat from this too disks 2 partitions one 50gb for windows and the rest off tham for data. I start the instalation, everything go ok, but after restart, when is "complyting instalation" appears message "Windows setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer`s hardware". I've tried all sorts of variations, but all times appears that message. There coudl be a problem, somting else must be changed in bios? It`s first time then i set up raid0, pls halpe me. Sorry for my bad english :(

Occasionally it does with MP3's. But the large majority of the time it is some type of web content (youtube, a flash video, an apple trailer, etc) - it's only done it once so far in a game.
