Right now, I am using the stock Intel CPu cooler but I don't think temperature is a problem though cause at 2.45Ghz, its running stable at 35C. The Antec 900 case also does a very good job of cooling the system down. And its not a stability issue either (yet) cause my problem is that the system won't even boot when I set the FSB to 1600 (400x7=2.8Ghz) so it does not even have time to heat up as well.  Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I will try fiddling with the NB voltage to see it would help.  I have read in one of the reviews for this MB in Newegg.com that he was able to OC his brd with the same CPU to 440x7 but unfortunately, he did not give details on how its done and since its not a forum, I have no way of contacting that person. Anyway, I will try your advice and see if there would be an improvement.

    To overclock my cpu from 8*266 to 8*333 i just change the cpu voltage from 0.0000 to 0.10000, with cpu voltage to 0.000 my computer don't start
    To understand why when i resume to suspend to ram my computer freeze i try this.

    And what stepping/revision Q6600 was this test done with?   I've tried with Geil 800mhz rated sticks and Corsair 800mhz sticks in addition to my own personal Buffalo 800mhz sticks and it's all the same.  At exactly 1200mhz it's like someone flipped a switch and the board won't POST.   The ONLY way I've found to get it to POST past 1200mhz is to increase the VTT to 16% which is a bit worrysome...   and with the 1.1 BIOS absolutely no increase in VTT is needed with the same setup.   Keep in mind this has been tried with not only my own personal P6N Platinum, but also with two different P6N SLI FI boards I've got here in the shop.   Heck I even ordered a brand new one just to test to see if the problem was based on a particular hardware revision.
    Very puzzling...   ??? ???

    Hmmmmm...no sticker at all, I check all over the board. This was a newegg purchase in Feb 08' if that can say anything about what version it may be. Also, I did not have the system OC'd at all. Everything was running "as is". The crackle I heard could be better described as when something is being fried. The odd thing is, there was no smells, no busted caps or anything. If I were to replace something first (with new) which would you suggest? I am thinking a new mobo since the mobo I have now could do more harm than good. Or should I get RAM to see if the RAM was fried when my PSU failed? I see 3btech.com has a P6N SLI V2 (what's the V2 mean?) for like $80. Although, if its RAM, it could most definately be a cheaper fix (and I have more ram lol). Again, thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated!!!

    yeah well if I set the timing to like 5-5-5-15 or something I'm sure it'll work fine.    But that's not the point...  Cuz if I have to set my timings to 5-5-5-15 just to get it up to the 889mhz that I need it.  I might as well just run the run in async mode at 4-4-4-12 800mhz.
    Seriously I have the weirdest ram.  I can run it at 4-4-4-12 800mhz with like 2.0 volts.  So There's like 0.2 volts of overclocking there.  But it just won't work at 889mhz.  And it not like it doesn't pass memtest or orthos.  The weird part is that it passes both at 889mhz at 4-4-4-12 timings at 889mhz.  The problem is that it won't start cold boot.    I'll have to press the power button and then press the reset button to get it to boot.  I guess that's not a really big problem, but having to press that reset button each time I cold boot is just really annoying. 
    If I set them to 4-4-4-12 at 800mhz, the computer turns on fine.
    I think the problem is the precharge for the ram.  I'll bet loosening the timing will make it work, but I just don't want to loosen those timings... 
    I just bought new ram so we'll see if that solved my problems.  :-P
    It might be the electron migration thing though.  I hear electron migration damage to things show up as random unpredictable problems.
    I would say my problems are random and unpredictable. 
    By the way, I just got a couple of fans for the ran slots.  They're sort of just jammed in there.  Kind of not elegant really.  But I now have TEN fans in the computer.  I hope that helps my ram overclocking.

    Hello guys and let me say that this is my first post but have been a loyal reader for a while now and I must say that I enjoy the help that you guys have given me and everyone else for what I have read, keep up the good work and help you give to each other from nobbs like me to the experts that post here, anyway I wont bore you anymore I am just confussed about something that I need some help on here are my specs
    msi p6n ali
    e6600 at stock 2.4 speed
    2gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 4-4-4-12 @2.1v at stock
    now I want to reach a 3.0 ghz cpu overclock and no more and leave the ram as it is, now this is my question, I get confussed when it comes to the cpu voltage and the ram, do I need to change the cpu voltage or just leave it at 0.00
    also why is it that some people have the ram linked other have it manual what the deal here
    I just want the ram to run as fast as it can without overclocking it

    Here are my settings for a 6600 @ 3.42GHz.
    FSB: 1520
    Mem: 760
    Mult: 9
    CPU-V: +.1500
    RAM-V: 2.05
    NB-V: 1.35
    SB-V: 1.50
    VTT: 8%
    Temps are very good, 24-51C.
    I'm having a hard time running stable over 380MHz, even 3-5MHz over. Even using much higher voltages for everything won't test for long without a problem .  The memory is certainly capable of much more than that.  I've had the CPU to 4GHz but of course not stable with Orthos.
    I'd like to have a better handle on what the VTT values should be.

  • P6N SLI Platinum Overclocking issue - Almost Fixed

           I am new to overclocking and I am trying to OC my q6600 from 2.4 ghz stock speed to 2.8 or 3.0 ghz. What I tried is using the MSI's Dual Core Center Utility to Overclock my CPU first, it was stable for FSB 312x4 = 1248 MHz & CPU core Frequency @2.8 ghz with Memory bus frequency 780 MHz.
    Then I rebooted the computer and typed in these values manually in BIOS but I had no post. What I did was only to change the default values ( FSB 1066MHz & RAM Frequency 666MHz ) to  FSB 1248 MHz & RAM Frequency 780 MHz.
    Any ideas about what's going wrong in here ?
    (I tried the +- 1 Mhz combinations, No post again)

    I have read a lot before making my attempt, and finally I have managed to boot the system at the third try  So here is what I did:
    Step 1: I increased the FSB frequency from 1066mhz to 1333Mhz and left everything at AUTO with spread spectrum for CPU disabled.
    Result: MSI boot screen showed up, followed by an ===========Exception========= screen.
    Act: Reboot
    Step 2: Increased CPU volt by + 0.0375, with the same settings above.
    Result: MSI boot screen showed up, followed by an ===========Exception========= screen.
    Act: Reboot
    Step 3: Increased FSB VTT by %8, in addition to the settings above.
    Result: Windows showed up  . 
    Act: Enjoyment!
    Now, I'm running temperature and stability tests, thanks for all the help 
    I'll keep you informed if I encounter stability errors and fix them hopefully.

    If you are using this ram, then the specs look pretty good (5-5-5-15 @ 1.8v DDR2-800), so I'd just:
    - leave it in "Linked' mode
    - leave the memory voltage at 1.8 (or "Auto")
    - go to advanced memory configuration and set it (everything) to "Auto"
    - on the "Advanced CMOS Settings" page, under CPU Settings, Disable C1E (if it's not there, hit F4 to make it show up)
    - back on the Cell Menu page, make sure D.O.T. and EIST are Disabled.
    - on Cell Menu page, scroll to bottom and make sure ALL Spread Spectrum settings are Disabled.
    ...from there, you should just be able to adjust the FSB and CPU voltage.  According to the link that Quadrifoglio Verde provided above...

    ...note that running your cpu in the 3GHz range, with higher voltage will cause it to run hotter - be sure that you have adequite cooling before attempting this (in other words, any overclocking you DO AT YOUR OWN RISK ).

    more likely this is attributed to a bug in the bios. you can flash your motherboard to the later bios release and try again. this is a very risky process as one bad flash can render your motherboard unusable. like i said, make sure u follow the instructions carefully before u proceed.

    I've been experimenting a bit and now reached 2.98 Ghz with stock cooler, idle @ 25C, loaded @ 55C
    The fsb:dram is 9:8 and mem is now running at 662Mhz, was 638 Mhz????
    I cannot set the divider myself unfortunately, or me don't now how to (see specs for info)
    One more question( you can put this post in the overclock forum if you like) I want to reach 3Ghz as a max, but as soon as I set fsb on 1500(now 1490) it will boot but within 10 to 30 min orthos will stop.
    What do I have to do to get it stable, my mem is running on 1.85V as described by kingston and I raised the NB by .025V, now 1.275V and on 2980Mhz it's rocksolid, no errrors after 5 hours of orthos.
    Do i have to raise the Vcore or something else, any comment is welkom

    Change the VCore voltage with + and - keys by number pad. If you set it to a value like 0.125, you add 0.125 to stock voltage of chip.

    Right, so I've tested the board outside of the case now. I had it resting on top of the box it came in and hooked up the very basics (video, audio, mouse and keyboard).
    Still the same crap, with and without the latest driver. Hooked up the front panel again (which was a bit tricky :P), and still the same results. The stupid crackling noise with the driver installed on both front and rear ports, and decent audio on the front ports without the driver. Rear panel still wouldn't work.
    Honestly, I'm going to give up on this and get a new board, as this is just a joke. It seems noone has had this specific problem, but on my google searches I came across other users with all kinds of problems, so this board might just be a problematic piece of hardware to have?
    Anyway, I'll keep monitoring this thread for a few more days, hoping that someone comes up with another idea, but I doubt anyone will come along with any more suggestions.

    After tweaking my setting for 7 hour, I got my computer stable @ 3.0Ghz using the following settings.
    MSI P6N Diamond
    Thermaltake Big Typhoon (Idle Temps 25-30C / Under Load Temps 35-50C)
    FSB @ 1333
    Memory @ 800
    CPU Ratio @ 9x
    PCI-E @ 100
    CPU Voltage .0250V
    Memory @ 2.2V
    NB Voltage @ 1.325V
    SB Voltage @ 1.50V
    FSV VTT Voltage @ 12%
    C1E Disabled
    Now, I ran Prime95 on it from 2 AM last night till 2PM today, and had no problems. Very stable.
    My only problem now is that I get random restarts on my system sometimes, like when I'm loading stuff, and so it restarts randomly, and then on boot, my Wireless Card (D-Link DWA-552 Extreme Wireless N) wont work anymore. Windows will see it, and says it works, but it wont detect any wireless networks. My Sound Card works fine, it is also in a PCI slot like the Wireless Card, so I'm wondering what else I need to tweak to make my peripherals working.
