Thanks for the tips, but I did get the onboard LAN adapter working again.  I ended up having to power down the PC, removing all power to the mainboard, resetting the BIOS, and then it worked as expected.
My point is that the LAN adapter gets flakey when I start overclocking.  I'm posting to gripe and also to see if anyone else has experienced this.
more likely this is attributed to a bug in the bios. you can flash your motherboard to the later bios release and try again. this is a very risky process as one bad flash can render your motherboard unusable. like i said, make sure u follow the instructions carefully before u proceed.

  • MOVED: P6N Sli Plat. weird cold boot issue

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=116740.0

yeah well if I set the timing to like 5-5-5-15 or something I'm sure it'll work fine.    But that's not the point...  Cuz if I have to set my timings to 5-5-5-15 just to get it up to the 889mhz that I need it.  I might as well just run the run in async mode at 4-4-4-12 800mhz.
Seriously I have the weirdest ram.  I can run it at 4-4-4-12 800mhz with like 2.0 volts.  So There's like 0.2 volts of overclocking there.  But it just won't work at 889mhz.  And it not like it doesn't pass memtest or orthos.  The weird part is that it passes both at 889mhz at 4-4-4-12 timings at 889mhz.  The problem is that it won't start cold boot.    I'll have to press the power button and then press the reset button to get it to boot.  I guess that's not a really big problem, but having to press that reset button each time I cold boot is just really annoying.
If I set them to 4-4-4-12 at 800mhz, the computer turns on fine.
I think the problem is the precharge for the ram.  I'll bet loosening the timing will make it work, but I just don't want to loosen those timings...
I just bought new ram so we'll see if that solved my problems.  :-P
It might be the electron migration thing though.  I hear electron migration damage to things show up as random unpredictable problems.
I would say my problems are random and unpredictable.
By the way, I just got a couple of fans for the ran slots.  They're sort of just jammed in there.  Kind of not elegant really.  But I now have TEN fans in the computer.  I hope that helps my ram overclocking.

  • P6N Sli Plat. and Wolfdale

Hi...does anyone know for sure if the P6N Sli Plat. can use the E8400 or E8500?  According to the compatibility list, either "stepping" version of either cpu is compatible if your board has Bios ver. 1.7.  But still I am cautious about buying one of those cpu's since I can't seem to find on forums where somebody has done this successfully (with 1 exception where they played with voltages and all that).  In fact even since bios 1.7 I still only read about people trying it without success.
    Thanks
    cas

Going sli with those gts will help when the going gets tough and deliver more frames per second for a smoother gaming expierence. Those new nvidia drivers havent made any difference as far as i can tell. I see youre using klipsch speakers good choice there is no better option in my mind for i own a set of chorus 2s for my stereo and a huge klipsch fan, nothing makes the neighbors hate you more than rattling knick knacks off thier shelves in the houses around me.

Did you have the system OC'd at all? The crackling you heard 'may' have been a capacitor gone bad. By the CPU, on the NB side I believe, do you see a little 1/4 or so round clear sticker with a number on it? Does it say 01, 02, or 03? I recently retired my P6N, but it was a 'great' board for a number of years. If you want to keep the board, it may have to go in for service. Trying another CPU might damage it too if something is wrong with the boards circuitry. MSI can also do a parts upgrade to the board & make it compatible with 45nm CPU's like the E8400-E8600 from a 01 02 03 revision board.
Hmmmmm...no sticker at all, I check all over the board. This was a newegg purchase in Feb 08' if that can say anything about what version it may be. Also, I did not have the system OC'd at all. Everything was running "as is". The crackle I heard could be better described as when something is being fried. The odd thing is, there was no smells, no busted caps or anything. If I were to replace something first (with new) which would you suggest? I am thinking a new mobo since the mobo I have now could do more harm than good. Or should I get RAM to see if the RAM was fried when my PSU failed? I see 3btech.com has a P6N SLI V2 (what's the V2 mean?) for like $80. Although, if its RAM, it could most definately be a cheaper fix (and I have more ram lol). Again, thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated!!!

    hello ,
first sorry for my bad english
i just added a new computer with K8N SLI plat motherboard with Win XP pro SP2  to my existing network.
network work fine , i can see all my 4 computer on my network.
internet work fine , i can surf or play online .
BUT , when i try to transfert big file like divx , only 1% of my 100mbp/s bandwith is used. so it take from 30 to 180 minutes :(
and after a few minutes my modem/router crash and i must power OFF /ON it to reconnect to web.
all transfert between the others PC are OK
no Firewall on PC since it is in my modem
anyone can help me ? thx

ok i have/has the exact same problem
try disabling your checksum offload for the nforce ethernet driver. it works most of the time for me
either that or use a different network card. I believe it has to do with drivers because it works one momment for me then it doesn't.
    to disable your checksum offload
    start->control panel->system->hardware->device manager->network adapters->NVIDIA nForce Networking->properties->advanced->checksum offload-> set to disable
hope that helps. If anyone knows of a nForce driver version that is 100% stable or a different fix please let us all know.

  • E6600 stock sink, P6N SLI Plat.

ok so I built my system last week and its been up and running pretty well for 2 weeks.  But I worry about dumb crap often and I noticed when I installed the heatsink, to get the 4 corner fasteners to fasten the board did bend a little bit pushing the socket portion of the board down.  Just wondering if this is normal, if theres going to be a failure down the road, just dunno.   My AMD 939s never did this.

I'm no expert, but I can say those things are way more flexible than i'd have thought... Had a problem with my P6N SLI-FI, had a sauder ball on one of the holes for my 775 socket.. Before I noticed it I managed to injure my thumb pressing down on the clamp, and the board took the abuse.. I wouldn't recommend but if it works don't mess with it?

  • P6N-SLi 650i RAM Problem

    Hi guys,
I just bought an MSI motherboard - P6N-SLi with the 650i chipset and 430 southbridge. It's a nice motherboard - although that northbridge is pretty hot.
Anyway - I bought a gig of Ram for it too - 2x512Mb OCZ which I know to be some decent enough memory.
The problem is - on the first night whilst installing win xp - it froze. no BSOD - no restart - just froze. I tried again and it was fine. Once XP was installed etc - it began to freeze - totally lock up - every few mins. I had to restart every time. I ran stress tests in the new gfx card (nvidia 8800gts) which was fine. I checked temps and ran other tests and the CPU and PSU and HDDs were all fine.
I had my two sticks of RAM in DIMM 1 and DIMM 3 as the manual said. I then took these out and put them in DIMM 2 and 4. Works perfectly now.
Any ideas why - and if so - whether two more sticks in 1 and 3 would cause issues if I was to upgrade??
Should i send this mobo back? Is it faulty? Or maybe I am missing a BIOS update or setting?
Help is greatly appreciated. - I'm not a n00b, just stuck

    Damn MSI's memory slot color-coding! ...
Ok, just so we're all talking about the same thing, when I look at my (Platinum version) manual, on page 2-7, it's titled "Memory" at the top and has images below there showing 3 alternate configurations for memory.  If you look closely at the lables on the right-hand side of the images, the slots are labeled:
    DIMM1  (green, closest to processor)
    DIMM3  (green)
    DIMM2  (orange, closest to processor)
    DIMM4  (orange)
...note that the second one is actually labeled "DIMM3", not DIMM2, as you might expect.  So the manual is in fact telling you to install into DIMM1 & DIMM2 - not DIMM1 & DIMM3.  In other words, in the green slot closest to processor and in the orange slot closest to processor - those are DIMM1 & DIMM2.  So, unlike pretty much every other board manufacture, to run in dual-channel mode, you need to have one stick in a green slot and one stick in an orange slot.  It sounds like you were putting them in the right slots... just calling them the wrong names .
Now that that's cleared up ... can you list the exact part number of your ram?

I don't seem to be hearing anything positive about this motherboard to be fair.
    No offense intended, but:
    a) "To be fair", There's LOTs of positive things being reported from MSI P6N owners... I think we tend to focus in on the negative reports (human nature), or ones that confirm what we suspect to be the case.  I'll grant you that there are some people reporting problems, but that's true about pretty much every board out there.  I may be guilty of the oposite effect, but as far as I can tell, there's actually a lot more positive than negative being reported about these boards, so I'm a little confused that you haven't seen anything positive (?).
    b) Also human nature, people who are generally happy or not having problems tend not to post anything at all.  So you're much more likely to see negative reports to begin with.
...you're actually the second person I've seen report this particular problem (Edge1, who just posted is the other one).  It's pretty puzzling, for sure.  If you can post the model/part number of the memory you're using, maybe we can figure something out.  I think Edge made some progress earlier by bumping the mem voltage up to what the memory was rated for.. have you tried that?

  • P6N SLI FI boot problems

Before I start just want to let you know that I'm a little pissed off so forgive me if I leave some details out. Ok, I have two hard drives, 250gb sata with XP and a 80gb with Vista. I rarely use my Vista HDD, I mostly use it just to check on vista stuff. I tried to get on it (changed it to first in the boot sequence) and it won't get on it, it just goes straight to XP. I was like oh well, thats just a problem with Vista. So i reinstall Vista, boots great everything is peachy. But then when I try to go back to XP, well what do you know, its doing what it did to me before, wont let me get onto XP. I have tried completely unhooking the 80gb and it says there is no boot device bla bla bla. I don't know what to try now, short of doing something with the bios (updating or flashing.) I'm probably going to do that now but I was hoping someone on here could help me.
    Thanks,
    Nick

read Moan Guide and provide full system specification.
"I have two hard drives, 250gb sata with XP and a 80gb with Vista"
"I have tried completely unhooking the 80gb and it says there is no boot device bla bla bla"
"I also tried to force it to boot from my sata (pressed f11 and chose it) and it still didn't work."
ensure that you have active partition on that HDD.
    Ok I'm running....
    Core 2 Duo e6600 @3ghz
    2gb DDR2 Memory
    8800gts 320mb OC Edition
    P6N SLI-FI
80gb Western Digital IDE HDD (Back up)
250gb Western Digital Sata HDD 16mb Cache 7200rpm SATA 300
Yes there is a partition and a OS on it. I can access files on it through Vista on my 80gb HDD, well after the annoying task of getting permission for everything. I was just booting from it before I installed Vista again so I know its nothing wrong with that. I know if I reinstall XP again it will let me boot from it but I don't feel like having to reinstall the OS everytime I want to switch HDDs.
Pressing f11 at the post screen gives me a list of my storage devices to boot from and that still doesn't let me. I know the XP is fine, it just won't let me on it.

It has been tested and no problem to pass 1200Mhz barrier....
    Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600 and corsair 800MHZ memory. OC to 1333MHZ.
    memory used in a test:
    the first group:Geil 1G 800MHZ
    the second group:HyNIX 1G 800MHZ
    the third group:Corsar 1G 800MHZ
    the forth group:XTreem 1G 800MHZ
    the fifth group:Vitesta 1G 800MHZ
If you experience the problem suggest you try with different memory brand/type.
And what stepping/revision Q6600 was this test done with?   I've tried with Geil 800mhz rated sticks and Corsair 800mhz sticks in addition to my own personal Buffalo 800mhz sticks and it's all the same.  At exactly 1200mhz it's like someone flipped a switch and the board won't POST.   The ONLY way I've found to get it to POST past 1200mhz is to increase the VTT to 16% which is a bit worrysome...   and with the 1.1 BIOS absolutely no increase in VTT is needed with the same setup.   Keep in mind this has been tried with not only my own personal P6N Platinum, but also with two different P6N SLI FI boards I've got here in the shop.   Heck I even ordered a brand new one just to test to see if the problem was based on a particular hardware revision.
    Very puzzling...   ??? ???

  • P6N SLI V2 performance problem

    My computer
    Mainboard: MSI P6N SLI V2
    Processor: Intel E2180 Allendale
    Memory: OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 Special Ops 2GB
    Graphics Card: Palit Geforce 8600GT DDR3 256MB
    PSU Chieftec GPS-500AB-A (500 Watts)
Mainboard is set to work in non-SLI mode and LED indicates, that the card in PCI-Express slot works in x16 but the benchmarks says something a quite different. 3DMark 2005 says 5500 points, 3DMark 2006 - 3500 points, all tested games works slower that they should be on this type of computer. Computer runs on Windows XP SP2 with the latest drivers and DirectX libraries. I checked whether it is a graphics card's fault, but I used different 8600GT made by Galaxy, and the scores were identical. I borrowed this card from a friend, his gig is: Athlon X2 4000+ and Asus M2N-E SLI mainboard and his 3DMark scores are basically 60% higher than mine. I don't know what seems to be the problem, all temperatures (CPU, mainboard chipsets and GPU) are normal, so does voltage on all rails. Computer is fully stable, the only problem is this strange low performance...

If your board has adjustments for the Northbridge chipset in bios try experimenting, i found that 600 mhz and 1.3 volts increased performance on my P6N diamond.
I've tried to overclock everything including processor, northbridge, memory and graphics card, the result is only about 100 points more, where I'm looking for like 1400 points more in 3DMark 2006 and whooping 4000 points in 3DMark 2005.

  • P6N Sli V2 Memory Problems

    Hi All.
    I have  -
    MSI P6N Sli V2 -1.2bios
    Intel Quad Core q6600
    3gig Crucial Ballastic Memory 6400 800mhz
    MSI 8600gt 256mb
    Vista 64  bit
2 gig works fine gets a rating of 5.0 on vista but when 3gig is installed 4.5 is my rating when this should be 5.9. Now by looking at other threads people where able to fix this out with a beta/newer bio's but i never saw anythin on the V2 board. I was unsure on which one i need to get so that why iam starting this as a way to get the correct bios so i can use all my memory at 800mhz and not 399mhz as told by CPUIZ!
    Any Help is welcomed help!

CPUZ regonize memory at being 800mhz
Don't confuse memory type and memory speed.  CPU-Z might have recognized your modules as DDR2-800 modules (and it most likely still does) but it is impossible that it told you that your RAM was operating @800 MHz (because that would equal DDR2-1600 MHz). Impossible.

    BINGO! Read here:

    The bottom line:
    Quote
VISTA has rather an illogical performance rating tool.
Don't trust those ratings.  You sleep better that way.
    Quote
nother thing is that the FSB : DRAM ratio is 2:3 surely this should be 1:1?
No, if the ratio would be set to 1:1 your RAM would be operating @266 MHz [=DDR2-533].
2:3 equals 1:1.5, your CPU operates @266 MHz FSB clock speed, that means
    266 MHz x 1.5 = 400 MHz [DDR2-800 MHz] memory clock speed.
BTW: If your memory really was operating at only half of its rated speed, your memory score would be a lot less.

  • P6N SLI Plat and floppy drive not working

System says the floppy drive works fine, but I put in a disc and it doesn't recognize it.  All I get is, "Please insert disc".
Windows says that drivers are up to date.
I really need to get it working so I can do a fresh OS install with raid drivers on the floppy.
I think im just retarded, or both my floppy drives are dead... or both my floppy discs are dead.

    P6N SLI Platinum
    2x1 G.Skill 800
    2x1 seagate 320's

From what I'm reading it sounds like you are able to boot to Windows at the moment right?
If so, why not skip using a floppy disk to load driver, and just slipstream your RAID drivers into a Windows install CD?
There are tutorials all over the web to do this, here's a good one:
    http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How-To--Slipstream-your-XP-installation
Regarding your floppy issue, it's very possible for your floppies to be dead. Almost all of mine that I have around are toast by the time I get around to using them.
If you're dead set on using a floppy to load your RAID drivers, go buy a couple new floppies and see if you still have the same problem. If so, then you're a new $14 floppy drive away from solving your problem...
