MOVED: P7N Diamond Optimization and Overclocking

First off:
Learn how Intel's Core 2 architecture works.  Basically: how the FSB calls the shots, how Vdrop needs to be compensated for, etc..
>>Core 2 Duo/Quad OC Guide<<
If you wish to go more advanced (after doing the above, obviously), you can start tweaking with GTLREF and FSB VTT voltages:  >>GTLREF and FSB VTT Voltage Tweaking<<
VGA card overclocking is another story...  NVIDIA and ATI differ in both ways.  With NVIDIA, getting the GPU and/or shader clock speed higher help most.
It would be better to overclock one card at a time, then go with the lowest overall clock speeds for both - upon completion - test them together (the thermals will play MUCH more a case here, so watch those temps while running SLI and the overclock).

  • P7N Diamond Optimization and Overclocking

    Hello again!
First, any tips on what BIOS features I can turn off/on to optimize my motherboard?  I’m finding that this board has a ton of settings, many of which I’m not sure what they do.  The manual isn’t much help so I figured I would come and ask you folks.  Of course, this leads to my second question(s)…
I’ve been building my own PC’s for some time now but one thing I NEVER did was overclock.  I’m not sure why I never did this before; I guess I just never thought it was necessary.  Now, I would like to give it a shot.  Could someone point me to a site, book or something that is good at teaching a beginner on how to overclock.
Currently I have an E8500 Wolfdale on my board.  From what I’ve read this processor is good for  overclocking.  I’m looking at getting it up to about 3.8 – 4.0 GHz.  I used CPUZ to get some information from the chip.  Its core voltage bounces between 1.128 v and 1.1336 v (not sure why it bounces, is this normal?).  My VID is 1.1500 v with a frequency of 333.33 x6.
I also have 6 GB of OCZ PC8500 Reaper memory.  Two 2 GB chips and two 1 GB chips running at 1066 MHz I wanted to overclock my RAM but I have no idea where to go with this.  I’ve also heard that OCZ Reaper isn’t good for overclocking but I don’t know how true that is.  One thing that I think may be a problem is that the 2 GB chips have a timing of 5-5-5-18 and the 1 GB chips have a timing of 5-5-5-15.  I’m guessing this could be a problem.
Lastly, I want to overclock my video cards.  Again, I have no idea where to go.  I have two 9800 GX2’s running Quad SLI.
I currently have an ABS BZ800 800 watt PSU which seems to run everything great even though I’ve read that I should have 1000+ watts.  Will this matter when overclocking?
Thanks in advance (again) for any help!!!!

    Bomberh,
My bad...was thinking of the P6N Diamond..the P7N Diamond does NOT have the VTT option in Cell Menu.  Just for info, I had .500 volts on my e6750 on stock air cooling and it posted 3600mhz and the CPU temp in bios never exceeded 32 deg C.  So, what you have to do is raise the voltage to the CPU to give it a little "oomphh" to get into post and the OS.  Your Arctic cooler should be able to handle it..try 1333, increase voltage in cell menu to .375 and see what happens?  Up to .500 volts with a good air cooler w/adequate heat paste should be quite safe.  You should always stop in bios to check the Hardware Monitor and record what the CPU and System temps are when O/Cing...if you see a steadily increasing temperature you will have plenty of time to pull the plug..lol.  Keep us posted.  Like Aaron said..it's all about trial and error.

Absolutely nothing helps. NOTHING. I have tried every possible thing you could expect normal user to try. This mainboard is crap. I got this to almost work with some (very expensive) Kingston memory sticks which were mentioned somewhere with this board, it only crashes few times a day now! Every component is tested at reseller AND replaced with some other brand. No help.

  • P7N Diamond vP07 and v1.42 Beta

These BIOS' are for the P7N Diamond and the P7N Diamond ONLY.
I've attached the performance BIOS vP07 and beta BIOS v1.42. Please provide feedback on these BIOS' as they can help other users in future.
    NOTES:
Do not load optimized defaults with the performance BIOS, as it will set memory timings to 4-4-4-18 1T and no memory can handle these tight timings at high speeds, without excessive amounts of voltage.
The beta may be missing options, as they aren't always complete BIOS'. But they tend to fix quite some issues.
*** Flashing either of these BIOS' are at your own risk. Do not complain if you end up with a paper weight! ***
*** Do not post problems/queries in here! All non-feedback related replies will be removed with/without warning! ***
    Flashing the safe way:
NOTE: Use second mode from the Tool, (Point to BIOS file directly). Extract BIOS from archive and point to the BIOS file.

The 1.1B4 BIOS has been quite good.  Using it, I've been able to bench my Q6600 at 4.05ghz (450mhz FSB) and find stability at 3.6ghz (400mhz FSB) with +.25000 vCore.  However, I know my chip is capable of being stable at 3.6ghz on less, and I'm hoping future BIOSes will only further improve OC results.
    Thank you for the feedback.

I recall there being quite a flurry of new releases leading up to the current 1.1B4 release, but there hasn't been anything since.  Do you have any word on when we can expect further BIOS developments for the P7N Diamond.
I'm not quite sure, but I will continue to check and upload the new betas as they come.

Also, while many of us have been able to zone in on stable FSB Term and GTL Ref voltages, the meaning of the numeric, non-direct-voltage settings remains a mystery.  Have you been able to find out any more information about these settings and how they relate to an actual voltage?
I'm still waiting for an answer on this...

Yep, CPU-Z version 1.51 is what I have installed.  It kind of stinks that 3.7G's is the highest folks can get this board.  I know many folks get the E8500 well past 4+G's, but I'll be happy with a stable 3.7G's.  I really wanted to keep with BIOS overclocking, I just thought maybe I was doing something wrong.  Any suggestions on some sort of performance testing I can do at default settings then at my overclock settings so I can verify I'm getting a performance increase?
    Thanks for the reply!!!!!!!

P.S. Oh yea, my VID is 1.2250v... I knew I had it written down!

I know this board can reach 300+ by reviews by Tom's Hardware. But I was wondering how I could get my FSB up there? I can't seem to get past the hurtle at 270. Anything above this will make the system fail to start up and I have to clear the BIOS again.
I lowered the HT to the equivalent of 3X, and CPU Multiplier to 8X using a venice core 3500+. I even tried adding voltage to the HT. I'm wondering if I'm missing something in this equation that stops me from getting 300+ FSB? The overclockable items are too many and unexplained.
If someone could spread some light on what else needs to be done, please tell me.
    My system is as follows.
    MSI K8N Diamond Plus
    AMD64 3500+ Venice

    Hi dude,
I have the similar problem as well.  Sounds like you are in the bad shape, but yeah, try to loose your RAM settings.  First, all settings auto seem to be good, but it's actually not the case.  You have to set TRC and TRFC as higher than 12 and 14.  I am seeting those to be 14, 18, and it seems to be working great.  It will be better to set the burst length as 4 beats.  I don't like this board coz I can't set the drive length to be weak instead of normal detected by the Windows.  My system can post, but I got problems of playing 3D demos and games, which looks like it's the problem of motherboard.  Not mature enough.
    My rig:
    AMD Athlon64 3700+ @ 2.7GHz
OCZ Platinum Elite DDR600 2.5-4-4-10 Dual Channel

Although this board has some overclocking functionality, it is not possible to tweak enough parameters to overclock the CPU by much.  I have found that I can run my E2140 at 1800MHz, but I need to tell it that I have 533 RAM to make it work, or it's clocking the 667 RAM which I have too fast (along with some other components no doubt).
If you read this post, I wonder if you could tell me what value is displayed for 'CPU Temperature' in the BIOS health check screen?  My system says that the CPU temp varies between -2 deg C and about 7 deg C so I would be interested to see if they all do that.  I have the same motherboard and CPU as you.

I just got the motherboard wehn i overclock and restart the PC either from windows or BIOS etc. The PC will not boot and have to turn it off then turn back on. Apart from this annoying issue it's a great board better theen my A8N SLi Premium mostly due to the extra CPU voltage yay :D Is anyone else getting this issue?
