Bomberth,
Please see the XS thread on the P7N for lots of OC tips and assistance:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=178286
Assuming you have a good Q6600 (preferably G0 stepping) and proper cooling, you should have no trouble OCing on this board.

Mark.

    Bomberh,
My bad...was thinking of the P6N Diamond..the P7N Diamond does NOT have the VTT option in Cell Menu.  Just for info, I had .500 volts on my e6750 on stock air cooling and it posted 3600mhz and the CPU temp in bios never exceeded 32 deg C.  So, what you have to do is raise the voltage to the CPU to give it a little "oomphh" to get into post and the OS.  Your Arctic cooler should be able to handle it..try 1333, increase voltage in cell menu to .375 and see what happens?  Up to .500 volts with a good air cooler w/adequate heat paste should be quite safe.  You should always stop in bios to check the Hardware Monitor and record what the CPU and System temps are when O/Cing...if you see a steadily increasing temperature you will have plenty of time to pull the plug..lol.  Keep us posted.  Like Aaron said..it's all about trial and error.

Absolutely nothing helps. NOTHING. I have tried every possible thing you could expect normal user to try. This mainboard is crap. I got this to almost work with some (very expensive) Kingston memory sticks which were mentioned somewhere with this board, it only crashes few times a day now! Every component is tested at reseller AND replaced with some other brand. No help.

I've never seen it, but I did read this on extremesystems
"Current performance BIOS is P07, based off of 1.1B6. This BIOS is known to solve multiplier issues with Yorkfield / Wolfdale chips. P09, which should carry over 1.1B8's new voltage settings, should be out shortly. "

Yep, CPU-Z version 1.51 is what I have installed.  It kind of stinks that 3.7G's is the highest folks can get this board.  I know many folks get the E8500 well past 4+G's, but I'll be happy with a stable 3.7G's.  I really wanted to keep with BIOS overclocking, I just thought maybe I was doing something wrong.  Any suggestions on some sort of performance testing I can do at default settings then at my overclock settings so I can verify I'm getting a performance increase?
    Thanks for the reply!!!!!!!

P.S. Oh yea, my VID is 1.2250v... I knew I had it written down!

I'm on the original bios, 1.10. I would have tried updating to the 1.90 Linux bios version, but have been frightened off by the need, reported here, to put in the original OS recovery DVD and revert to that.
When I'm confident that I can make a copy of the existing 9.04 Ubuntu installation and recover back to that afterwards, I might look at updating the bios.
Does the later bios actually make much difference? A quick browse of what info is available doesn't reveal much. Of course, often if there is a huge mistake in early versions "they" prefer not to highlight it.
I'm limited by not having easy access to a USB DVD drive, so I'm trying to work with thumb drives or across the network.

    Malik,
If you can, dont use Ntune..it causes more problems than it's worth.  Download the new System Tools, and just install the Performance Tools.  It offers better OC options, including shader sliders and is much more reliable than Ntune was.  Ths only glitch in the Performance Toos, is that you must run your shader at least twice your GPU core speed or it will give you an "invalid setting" message.  Nvidia needs to provide an unlink button, or, just link the sliders.
Oh, and you should set all your FSB sttings in bios, not in Ntune or Performance tools.

Have you done a new fresh installation?
    Latest DX installed?(https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=114542.0), January 2008
    Sound HW acceleration at full?
Does the sound shuttering happend with specified game or?
Can you try those drivers ==>  X-Fi series XP Beta Driver(9 Jan 08) http://files2.europe.creative.com/manualdn/Drivers/AVP/10469/0xE545059D/SBXF_PCDVRBETA_LB_2_14_0001.exe
Those drivers say that there isn't a supported device installed in the system, I've installed that DirectX pack you linked me to but no change unfortunatley - I kind of doubted it would change anything anyways since this XP has every update upto February 2008 installed from the CD already. Hardware acceleration is on full right now yes. I am going to try uninstalling everything and moving it to a PCI-e x16 slot and reinstalling to see if that makes a difference now.

    First off:
Learn how Intel's Core 2 architecture works.  Basically: how the FSB calls the shots, how Vdrop needs to be compensated for, etc..
    >>Core 2 Duo/Quad OC Guide<<
If you wish to go more advanced (after doing the above, obviously), you can start tweaking with GTLREF and FSB VTT voltages:  >>GTLREF and FSB VTT Voltage Tweaking<<
VGA card overclocking is another story...  NVIDIA and ATI differ in both ways.  With NVIDIA, getting the GPU and/or shader clock speed higher help most.
It would be better to overclock one card at a time, then go with the lowest overall clock speeds for both - upon completion - test them together (the thermals will play MUCH more a case here, so watch those temps while running SLI and the overclock).

  • Memory settings on P7N Diamond

    Hi
ive got a P7N diamond and what would be the best settings and voltages to use i know i may have to tinker with it but if i have a good place to start it may help me not to fry the memory ,whcih is OCZ Reaper DDR2 PC2 8500 2X1GB P/N OCZ2RPR10662GK.
    Thanks for any help
    Paul

ok so after the episode with the high latency i had another problem:
    - i shut down the computer and unpluged it,
**- pluged it back in and when i turned it on i got no boot(coldboot as i think it's caled when everything spins and lights up but the gpu fan doesn't slow down and nothing comes up on screen)
    -reset bios and it worked
-tried again to load my settings and then unplug it from power and plug it in again to see if i get the same coldboot
    -got the cold boot
-tried with default bios settings and i didn't get any coldboot at all even if i unplug it and plug it back.
-so i started to change setings and found out that if i went over 1.25 v on nb this started to happen, but that was odd because i was running this settings for weeks now, and this didn't happened before, so my guess is that this started to happen after i took all mem sticks out and put them back and maybe it's linked to the fact that now i get normal latency and bandwidth(65 ns and 6k mb\s)...i really don't know...ghosts'n stuff...
-i took out the bios battery and left it like that with the power cord unplugged for about 10 min.
-popped the bios bat back, loaded my settings and tried again to shut it down and unplug the power and then plug it back in
-it worked...no coldboot, so my guess is that it's either e buggy bios version or  buggy engineering
** this happend only when i would shut down and unplug the power cord, or swich the psu off and then tried to turn on the computer, because if i would just shut it down or reset, it wouldn't coldboot when i would turn it on

  • P7N Diamond heat issues

I got my GTX 275 FTW in yesterday and while my rig is pretty screaming now, I'm having some heat issues. My profile contains all my specs and settings. I was hitting temps of up to 66c or so on my CPU when playing Grid at 1920x1080 with full AA/AF turned on yesterday. I've got a Cosmos 1000 case, which is quite silent, but not the best at moving heat, although it has a good number of fans.
I installed Nvidia Precision tool and set my fan to 70%. I'm hoping that helps some. Is there a way to crank up the fans any with the P7N diamond mobo? I've checked speedfan and it shows my CPU fans at 100%. I'm not sure about PSU or case fans and if there is any way to crank them up some. Any advice on maybe cooling it down some? Also, any suggestions on maybe tweaking my bios settings? I had a hell of a time getting the thing to run stable, as I had to OC and crank up the voltage to get the thing to even work out of the box. Thanks!

Well, this temperature limit is not defined for the Core Temperatures, but actually for the so-called "TCase" temperature (temperature measured at/in the geometrical center of the CPU's own heatspreader).  There is no sensor there, so you can't really measure it anyway.
The limit for the Core Temperatures (TJunction) is much higher  (Core Temp should show you the TjMax/TJunction value).  It is usually around 95-105°C for a Quad Core processor.
Thanks for the info. So what would you think is a good "max" Core Temp temperature to go by before worrying? Obviously you would prefer to stay well below the TjMax value I would think... Also, what about GPU temp for a GTX 275 or do you know? I really appreciate the feedback by they way. It helps a lot.
I have also been worried about some of my bios settings, but have been unable to move to a new bios because I'm not sure how to convert the % based values to the more meaningful ones used with later revisions.. but alas that is another topic in and of itself.

  • Another P7N Diamond that cannot install XP

    Current setup:
    - MSI P7N Diamond motherboard
    - OCZ P6400 2 X 2gb Dimms (4gb total)
    - PNY nVidia GeForce 9600 GT Verto (512mb) video card
    - brand new "green" 650 watt power supply
    - 2 X 750gb SATA IDE Seagate drives
    - Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66 processor
XP installation starts off normally by creating partition and copying files to it.  Then comes the first reboot and the XP screen with the floating line appears.  As soon as it hits the first graphical screen, the mouse cursor appears and functions (moving the mouse moves the cursor), about 2 seconds into that, system reboots.  After the reboot, it comes back to the first graphical screen after the windows floating line and says "Setup is being restarted......" and the reboot is continual.
    - I've tried testing the RAM without issues.
    - I've tried using both 1 stick of RAM and both sticks of RAM
    - I tried using another known good 1gb stick of RAM
    - I have tried with and without the RAID configuration
    - I've tried using standard IDE as well as SATA IDE drives
    - I've tried installing XP Home and XP Pro (both legit versions)
    - I've tried using V.1.0, V1.1 and V.1.2.1 BETA bios
I've currently got a trouble ticket open with MSI tech support, but they tell me to swap RAM and do memory tests (both previously done!).
Nothing that I have done can get XP installed on this seutp and I am just plain frustrated.  I'd *REALLY* appreciate any help or suggestions to get this running.
    Thanks.

Windows XP install CD, boots properly, installs files properly... on first reboot to graphical screen it reboots after saying "Setup is restarting......"  It will do this continually.
What have I done to date:
    - Reduced setup to 1 2GB memory stick... no change
    - Done extensive memory checks with 1 and 2 sticks of OCZ RAM and Platinum 1GB RAM all without errors... no change
    - Changed to known good RAM (1 GB of Platinum DDR2 @ 533mhz)... no change
    - Tried installs with and without the RAID configuration (RAID 1)... no change

    - Tried installing XP Home and XP Pro (both legit versions)... no change
    - Tried using V.1.0, V1.1 and V.1.2.1 BETA bios... no change
    - Tried install using Windows XP Pro with SP3 slipstreamed into the disk image... no change
    - Tried using both the Bios Failsafe settings and Optimized Default settings... no change
    - Tried the SPREAD SPECTRUM settings both enabled and disabled... no change
Question, could it be a bios setting that could unlock this mystery from hell for me somehow?
