Just bought a P965 Neo 2 motherboard.
Connected harddisk to SATA cable and EIDE cable to samsung writemaster DVD writer.  Not sure why BIOS can't detect the writemaster drive but can detect harddisk?
Quote from: Misha
Just bought the board. Installed it. will not boot from win xp or any other bootable cd rom. help
The Intel 965 (and 975) chipset does NOT support IDE/PATA.
For this reason, each mainboards manufacturer is using a 3rd party IDE controller.
In this case (P965 Neo2) MSI is using Marvell 88SE6111.
Any PATA device is not recognized in the first boot phase. You have to wait for the 2nd one (post-boot) in order to see it.
Check out your bootable devices (and their order) in BIOS: the CDROM option means SATA optical device, not PATA CDROM.
To select the PATA optical drive, search for something like ... DVD-RAM in those options.
cheers

You should have no problem using the external optical drive. As for the external HD, you'll need to format it properly, depending on whether you want to use it with a Windows machine as well as your MacBook Pro.

  • Portege A100 - problems recognising a new DVD writer

    Hi,
I am attempting to replace the Panasonic/Matsu****a UJDA750 combo drive with a LiteOn SOSW-852S DVD writer. The LiteOn is CSEL, and is not recognized by the Portege A100. I've tried changing it to Master/Slave/CSEL and Inverse CSEL using E2MS_WIN_SOSW-852S.exe (in an Acer Travelmate 220, which sees every configuration), but the Portege A100 still doesn't recognize the LiteOn.
I ran IDEDIAG using a WinME boot CD, and the Matsu****a Combo drive in the Portege reports as Secondary Master. So, I tried flashing the LiteOn drive (using the Acer Travelmate as the platform) with MTKFlash version 183c using the command ??mtkflash 3 w /b PRS9.bin" (using the original backed-up firmware), "3" to change the drive to Secondary Master. I ran into problems here - the flash appeared to lock up. The drive is still ok, however. I flashed it back to the original CSEL ok using the E2MS program in the Acer.
I haven't tried bridging pins 45 to 47 on the LiteOn - I figured that was maybe a last resort.
So - can you help with the correct configuration for a CD/DVD drive in the Portege A100? There's a bunch of different ones - Primary/Secondary/Tertiary/Quarternary Master/Slave, CSEL and Inverse CSEL. The Portege A100 "sees" the Matsu****a CDROM model CR-176_B from the Acer.
Or - can you recommend a suitable DVD burner for this laptop?

I successfully changed the SOSW-852S Lite-On to suit the Portege A100 by bridging terminals 45 & 47 at the IDE socket on the Lite-On.
I tried it first with a piece of foil externally to see if it worked, then used a fine soldering iron (and a magnifying glass) to bridge said terminals internally.
From what I can find out, this hard wires the Lite-On to Master.
I was also able to flash the Lite-On firmware to different configurations by using MTKFlash and E2MS_WIN_SOSW-852S.exe, i.e. Master/Slave/CSEL/Inverse CSEL. This didn't make a difference to the Portege A100.
Anyway, it works. Trying to find the correct configuration for a new CD/DVDROM to a laptop is like pulling teeth.

I did't do that. I don't want to boot from the RAID. I want to boot from a single S-ATA Drive attached to ICH8. I just want to have the RAID available in Windows as second drive.
EDIT: I just tried that and moved the Bootable addon-card to the first position. But the Controller-BIOS still doesn't show.
    Regards, Pioneer.
I read about this problem earlier. Some PCIe SATA raid controller did just boot on this mobo. I know that much that in the "hdd boot priority" he didint get any hdds to see from this controller and put option "bootable addon card" to first one. No boot.
He changed to pci contoller -> ok. Maybe pcie problem, maybe not.
I have been my self having problems with SCSI hardware. I got 3 cards, all designed to work with 32bit pci (2 actually 64bit, but support 32 too).
    1) Adaptec 2100s, bad write performance unusable
    2) Mylex Acceleraid 1100 even worse read peformance, unboottable from bios.
    3) Atto U3LS works 100%, bad card :S
When I connect some scsi devices to these cards, mylex wont show any hdd in my bios.
Both adaptec and Atto shows in HDD boot priority like:
    Att168 06 : IBM IC35.....
    Ada162 02 : Maxtor Atlas 4k10_73wls
So I would guess that if you dont see any HDD's there from your card, you just cant boot from it.
Also if you get another raid contoller, i would suggest u to check somewhere someone claiming it works on this board.
For performance issues, refer to my thread, see last 2 posts some benchmark pictures.

  • DR4-A not recognised as a DVD Writer

What in the system configuration in my AMD 1800+ system could cause
every new Blank DVD put into my DVD player come up in My Computer as
"1.99 GB AUDIO". I bought a new MSI burner and saw this come up on my
first DVD. You can't burn the 4.7 GB as promised, because t says you
only have 2.99 GB free. This happens on generic DVD-R's, Memorex
DVD-RW's and Maxell DVD+RW's. I figured it was the burner. I took it
back and they gave me a new one. I tried it last night and it was
doing the same thing. I took the second one back today and the tech at
the store put it in the test computer and said it was working fine. he
said he would do some more testing and in the mean time I could take
his tested Toshiba DVD+-RW drive and see if it fixxed my problem. I
put it in my system and now it's acting the same as my other two MSI
drives. Also, because it doesn't appear to be reading the DVD right
(I'm assuming this, because of the wrong GB's Free), it called an RW
and illegal disk and won't erase it.
I'm running Nero 5 (It also did it with Nero 6Ultra), AMD 1800+,
383Megs Ram. The DVD burners have all been slave drives when I put
them in as I didn't want to remove my other drives to reconfigure
everything. According to the tech at the store this shouldn't make any
    difference anyway.
I've also tried versions of Easy DVD platinum, Clone DVD, Burn4Free,
etc and they all have the same results, so I'm assuming it's somewhere
in my cmos, config, drivers, etc.
It burns and erases CD-R's and CDRW's fine.
I've also just flashed my MoBo Bios to the lastest version and still have the same problem.
ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

some good solutions to flash a firmware without a floppy or a FAT partition:
     - boot from a Flash card. Doable depending on the reader/motherboard. I've done it from a USB reader. I just copied the win98 boot disk on it and the firmware and flash program
     - create a bootable CD ROM with a RAM drive (there is one on the win98 boot disk). Copy the firmware and flash program in it and fly.
basically, the goal is to get to a DOS prompt and have a media with the need files on. You should be able to access your SD card (or any flash media) from DOS. Just continue checking your volumes (a, b... g... ). If you usually have 2 partitions and a CD (so, C, d and E) the flash drives may be f and above (and you usually have 5 of them...
    Guide on HD-Burn:
In Nero, when choosing your new compilation, you have the type of media on your right (CD audio, CD mix...). On top of this column, you have a pull down menu with the physical type: CDR, DVDR or HDburn. (at least, this is how it is on Nero 6).
    Formating in FAT:
under win2k/XP, when you want to format a drive(right click on the drive letter and choose format), you get a small menu with capacity on top, then file system (NTFS, FAT, FAT32), cluster size, label. Just choose FAT or FAT32 as the file system. You need to have a partition of less than 32GB to choose FAT32 and less than 2GB for FAT.

  • P965 Neo-F audio jacks not working.

I've been having serious issues with the audio jacks on the P965 Neo-F board.  I have actually tried two boards, convinced the first board was defective since my speakers worked fine on other computers.  On both the current board and the last board, I did a complete clean XP install, formatting my hard drives and installing the latest RealTek HD drivers (5.10.0.5404 dated 4/23/2007, from MSI).  The first board never so much as peeped, while the board I have now has made some sounds, although I honestly don't know why.  On this board, I had a set of Altic Lansing 2.1 speakers, but because the speakers would pop and make static noises every now and again, generally only if I bumped one of the small stereo speakers or wiggled the cords on the back of it, I thought perhaps the problem was the speakers being old.
On the current board, I tested a monitor that has speakers in it, and there was no sound.  RealTek's sound manager, which I have installed, did not recognize that there was anything plugged into the jacks even though I had a line in, microphone, and line out plugged in.  When it did recognize the lino out, it also recognized the microphone.  However, it only recognized them for no more than a minute.  The new speakers (also Altec Lansing 2.1) made one squeak for less than a second; other than that, there has been no sound at all.
I've tried several different RealTek HD drivers from MSI, Microsoft, and RealTek, but none have made any difference.  I've enabled and disabled only to re-enable the audio device through BIOS with no success.  I've checked the volume, DxDiag, and played music--Winamp and iTunes are both making sound, but no sound is coming out.
I'm pretty much out of ideas here.  The only thing I can think to do is get a sound card, but I don't see why I should have to do that when I'm not an audiophile and the board jacks should suit me fine.  I am quite at my wit's end with this, and would appreciate any help I can get.

    Quote
It recognizes that I pluged something into the microphone jack but can't get the microne to work.
This problem usually has to do with the fact that the computer case used, or to be more precise: its front panel audio connectors are not fully Intel HD Audio compliant.  Disable the Automatic Front Panel Jack Detection Function in the Realtek HD Audio Manager and retry.
If your mic still does not work as it should, browse through the Realtek Program Folder and look for an executeable file named "miccal.exe".  Run it to calibrate your microphone.  Also, enable "Microphone boost" in the Mixer-tab of the Realtek configuration program. The top half part of the mixer Tab ("Playback") can be scrolled to the left via <> buttons.  Scroll left and localize the input jack your mic is plugged into (example:  "Rear Pink In").  Click on the Options button and enable microphone boost.
    Quote
When I go into the mixer settings I can't adjust adjust any of the inputs - cd, mic, line etc. Although it shows places for a sliding volume adjusters but doesn't show a slider to be able to adjust the volumes of the inputs.
That is totally normal and not a problem.  It is basically a limitation of the Realtek HD Audio Driver in combination with Windows XP.  It has nothing to do with the board.  Here is an Asus-example:
There is nothing wrong here.  If you scroll through that output devices/jacks in the Mixer tab of the Realtek HD Audio Manager, you will find that you can adjust the input/output volume for each audio jack individually.  Doesn't make sense to adjust input volume in the output section?  Well, ask Realtek which genius designed the interface and ask him personally.

    Hello
    Any help would be appreciated.
I just bought a new intel Core-duo CPU and I'm having problems booting and installing XP.
    Here's the machine setup
    cpu: intel core duo 2.13Mh
    board: MSI p965 neo-f
    ram: 2x512Mb Mushkin em2 pc2-5300
dvd: samsung on IDE as master
    hd: barracuda 7200.10 320Gb on sata3 or 4 ...
    - If I install RAM in dual channel 1 and 3, I can't pass through the MSI splashscreen. System frozen.
    - If I install RAM in dual channel 2 and 4, I can start xp setup from DVD, but it freezes up at some point (loading primary stuff)
    - If I only set a single channel (2), I can get a bit further in the setup process, but I get a failure at some point when copying some files from DVD to HD (never the same file on each try).
Didn't change a thing in the BIOS except the boot order
    Any idea anyone?

    allright
Got it to work with my friend's RAM: Kingston kvr800, 2x512 Mb
My muchkin RAM on his system seemed to work, although the system didn't seemed to respond well when we ran dxDiag or system properties (it could,nt dusplay memory status, etc)
ALSO, we realized that if I installed the 2x512Mb muchkin RAM as single channel in my system, then it went fine to...
I guess I'm better to ask and exchange the muchkin chips for Kingston

  • P965 NEO-F Memory Problem

    Hi
    I have a P965 NEO-F Board with the 1.6f bios and a Pentium D 805.
The problem seems to be my memory (MDT 2x1024 DDR2 800mhz) running in slot 1+3.
I cant get the board to run it at 800mhz. it works without problems at 533mhz. but as soon as i change the bios to 667 or 800 it wont boot and after two restarts it changes back to 533.
I have no issues with stability or anything. both modules ran through memtest with 2+ hours and no problems.
Some images with Everest2007. maybe someone can spot a problem and help me:
and the memory benchmark which i think is way too bad.:
    thank you

As I can see everything is recognized correctly in Everest. Also,You have a decent latency, and I can say that because I was running Pentium D [email protected](FSB 800MHz) with this board and as I can remember the latency was around 110ns. I can only advise you to use the Auto adjusting option for the memory frequency and leave the memory timings by SPD.

  • MSI P965 Neo PCI-e lock?

    Hi!
could any of you tell me whether or not the MSI P965 Neo-F board has an option to lock the PCI-e clock?
My plan is to tweak the FSB to 333 (which implicates a 333/266 = 25% overclock), which I've read is more then easy to obtain with a Core 2 Duo 6300. I just don't wanna ruin the rest of the system by getting a PCI-e busspeed of 125.
So I'm really curious if this board has either a build-in lock @ 100/101, or some option in the BIOS to lock the bus.
    Thanks!

well you could just try raising your fsb to 333Mhz and see what happens. done it with mine no problems at all no other tweeking either. lots n lots of people have done the same without a problem.

  • P965 neo-f hdd detection problem

Hello, I'm facing a very strange problem. I'm using a p965 neo-f board, with a dual pentium 2.80GHz, a 250gb sata wd disk, 2x512mb corsair ram, ati radeon x1300, psu tagan 480w, ide dvdrw bios w7235ims v1.5. I build the system myself and installed windows xp x64 pro. Everything went ok and the system was stable. Some day there was a current breakdown and when i powered on the pc during the post it hanged at ide detecting disks. I've entered bios setup, save and exit rebooted and went back to windows. At the past 2 years i suffered a couple current breakdowns leading to the above problem that i'm solving it as i said before. I must say that the computer belongs to my sister and i'm her technician . During last week my sister decided to move the pc to another room. They connected the computer, powered it on and the same thing. During post it hangs on detecting disks. I took the computer at home changed the sata to the jmicron slot, and booted to windows. The problem is that the ethernet controller doesn't work. So i reinstalled all the mobo drivers, no luck. I did a bios update to version 1.90. The result was with sata connected to the jmicron, the ethernet controller is not working. I changed the sata to sata 6 and everything worked ok. Today I've opened the pc again to check it out and the same thing, post hangs at ide detection. I don't know what to do anymore. maybe the intel controller is messing up with the jmicron? or the bios is not suitable? should i downgrade to other bios versions? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the reply, I thought about those things myself and I'll try them. Here is another weird one. Connecting the hard drive to sata2 slot everything worked well for a day.
Today I powered the pc in the morning and it recognized the disk. I Did some work and I checked the shutdown and the rebooting. Everything looked as It should be. So  I went to the beach, and when I came back, I started the pc--->> the same thing happened!!!
Should I try another bios version? or It is just a waste of time?

    Hi,
I have the MSI P965 Neo-F board, and need to setup the sata ports to AHCI or enhanced mode, but don't see this options as in previous MSI boards.

ICH8 has no RAID so P965 Neo only does RAID through the 3rd party JMicron controler.
Same problem here. It is not just about RAID but AHCI, for NCQ, but more importantly for ESATA hotplug.
2 years later still no BIOS it seems (I have most recent 1.11).  MSI still advertises with "enhanced AHCI" for this board even, (see bullet list under Intel® ICH8 Chipset):

  • P965 NEO & E6400 sudden reboot

    Hello all!
I recently built a new system:
    MSI P965 NEO
    C2D E6400
    Gigabyte GeForce 7900GT
    2x 1Gb DDR2 Aeneon 667MHz CL5 5-5-5-15
Be Quiet! Blackline BQT P5 420W
    320Mb SATA2 Seagate hd
    Samsung Writemaster DVD-RW
The system started up and I installed Win XP Pro SP2 without any problems. Now the problem is it sometimes suddenly reboots without blue screen or any error messages. It happens most often when playing Oblivion but has happened while playing DVD's or using Opera as well. The CPU runs at stock speed and I've never tried to overclock it.
First I thought the CPU was overheating since the temps were high(ish), I use EVEREST to measure the temps since it shows core1 & core2 independently. At full load the core temps were close to 60 deg. C with the original Intel heatsink. I replaced the original heatsink with a Scythe Ninja Plus (a huge heatsink with a 120mm fan) , now it idles below 40 C and peaks at around 50 C when fully loaded. Unfortunately it didn't fix the rebooting problem.
Since updating the BIOS from 1.4 to 1.5 made a huge difference I'm starting to think it might be something mainboard related. With v1.5 the system has rebooted itself only a few times and only while playing Oblivion. I've run EVEREST's "System stability test" multiple times without problems.
Can anyone think of what's causing it and how I could make it more stable? Any ideas would be much appreciated!

    Thanks for the suggestions guys!
I've run Memtest86+ (the DOS version) and it passed several times without errors. I've also tried running the memory both 667MHz and 553MHz which made no difference. It does seem like a memory problem though so maybe I should try running the memories one stick at a time?

    Hey guys,
Having been using this MSI P965 Neo Mobo for 3 monthes, I am now thinking selling it.
So many guys report they OC E6300 to more than 3G, but mine stays at 2.23G @ 320MHz.
It is a HUGE pain! Besides, this board does not support RAID and has some small problems.
I need your suggestion on this issue: should I sell and replace it with an asus or gigabyte mobo?
of course I will buy faster memories for Overclocking.
    Thank u,
I'd have to say yes, if you want a P965 board. MSI sadly seems to have screwed up on the 965 chipset , overclocking wise.
If you need something relatively cheap, I've had a lot of Asus P5B's hit 401 (strap change) Mhz np (with a fan on northbridge ofc).
Gigabyte's 965 is good also, but go for the 965-DS3P, not the regular DS3, the P version is a much nicer board...
If you can afford a little more, Asus P5B deluxe is a real good one. I wouldn't buy the gigabyte DQ6 as it has a copper cooling plate at the back wich interferes with some aftermarket cpu cooler mounting mechanisms.
    good luck !
