PCI Express, K8N SLI Platinum.

Hi,
AFAIK it's not possible. You can only use the second PCIExpress as x1(for other devices) or x8 (for GC)
Right !?

    Hello everybody.
Is there anybody out there who has tried this setup och similar.
I'm about to get this MB K8N SLI Platinum with Dual PCI Express 16 slots.
The first will be occupied by a standard ATI PC-express 16X Grafic card
The Second will be occupied by the PCI Express 4X Promise Supertrak EX8350 8-Channel RAID.
    My Questions are these.
    1. Have anybody tried a similar setup.
    2. Will the Promisecard downclock to 1X while on the second PCI-X slot
I will build a 2 TB Raid 5 on this controller but unsure if the MSI can do it.
PCI-Express 16 should be backward(downward) compatible but i have read that some motherboards only use 1X when it's not a graphic board and this is a 4X card.
    Many thanks in advance.

    K8N SLI PLATINUM QUESTIONS

Okay  finally i overclocked a bit (i am not really in the overclocking business)
With Bios defaults settings without touching anything else i raised FSB to 220 MHz resulting to a 2.2 GHz CPU operating frequency a nice 10% overclock    (of course  i have disabled spread spectrum in bios) reaching that way the Athlon 64 3500+ .
Every thing seemed rock - stable!!..
However, when i tried to shut down the machine,  i got a nice BSOD (Black screen of death) HDD light remained on . As far as i know the board is locking PCI-E , so graphics card and SATA drive should not causing the problem here.
So i raised the CPU core voltage up to 5% and oualla!! Rock stable ( 3 Hours Prime 95)
... did not try to rise chipset voltage or memory voltage (is set to 2.7 volts by memory SPD) since this was not necessary in my case. Might try some more overclocking in the future but right now i am happy with it and just will sit back and enjoy
There is a guy who succeeded in rising FSB to 358!!! Mhz with this board (well almost) he advices just not to enable Aggressive memory timings...
    here
Anyway, Thanks for the tips guys
    Best Regards,
    Markoul

Maybe i need to add more electric power for my memorys. The spec says 2.80 volt on 250 mhz but i start to suspect that this is just an minimum requirment, maybe i need more than 3.0 v to operate the memorys on high performance(beyond 230 fsb), but the thing is that BIOS allows me only too add 2.85v maximum.
Im trying to find a newer version of BIOS version 3.1 if there is any....
    Here: http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/other/111
v5.0 Beta 4 allows to give 3.10V to the memory but i don´t think it´s going to help you, you probably have the CBBID issue.

This mobo is good but its false advertisment to call it overclock friendly.
People are having problems getting ther FSB over 220 and this is a overclocking mobo.
MSI K8N SLI PLATINUM (really disappointed over the mobo)
POINT OF VIEW GEFORCE 6800ULTRA @450/1300  (Really good)
    Crusial ballistiX PC4000 (Great memory)
Aspire 520watt 35amp (strong as hell)
Dear Friend don't get angry too quickly. I also have a socket 939 Athlon 3000+ Winchester. In start MSI K8N SLI Platinum was not allowing me to OC more than 220FSB in BIOS. Although in Windows I can OC it to 2.16 GHZ with NVidia NTune. It's 240FSB. You are facing the same problem that I was facing. Its 219MHZ Bug for Winchester CPUs.
All you need to do is when you are OC'ing more than 219 MHZ, just set you HT multiplier to 1x and you can go upto 260MHZ FSB via BIOS. When you get to the desktop of windows use any software to set the multiplier back to 4x or 5x (depends on how much you OC). Nvidia Ntune is a good software for this purpose. Plz keep in mind that Winchester cores are not too much overclocking friendly CPUs. They won't go beyond 2.4 GHZ and instability is bound to happen after 2.3 GHZ.

  • Problems with older PCI-Videocards on K8N SLI Platinum ??

    Hi there,
i just recieved my K8N SLI Platinum (without NEO) yesterday. Unfortunatly my new PCIe-Videocard isn't here yet,
so i just built my rig with an old S3 Trio64 to install Windows etc. and to have at least my PC for some surfing and so on...
    The problem is:
The Card is marked with an ! in the device-manager. It says the card couldn't get its required resources, and that i'd have to
disable some other device of the system first to fully use the videocard. I checked for IRQ's, but the card has an exclusive one.
I put it in the second (middle) PCI-Slot on the board. Due to that error, the drivers are not installed correctly and the performance
of the display is ... well its even to slow for scrolling pages while surfing ... thats realy anoying, and my PCIe-card will not be here
until the end of next week
I even manged to get another old PCI-dinosaur, but with no luck. The same Problem persists. So i think it's some problem with
the board or some iossettings. The only thing regarding display in the bios was the PCIe / PCI switch which is correctly set to PCI.
So if anyone knows how to get an old PCI-card running in that board, please help me
    [ApoC]

    Well,
"f***ing up" the OS is not a problem, i got a GHOST of my perfectly fresh & clean OS.
    I have disabled:
both SATA-Controllers (still running on good old ATA Samsung SpinPoint P80)
the FireWire-Controller (which is shown in Windows anyways  )
I changed the videocard from PCI 2 to PCI 1, with the only result that it shares IRQ with the OnBoard-Soundblaster in slot1.
In slot2 it gets an exclusive IRQ. The problem is, i can't even see what resources are making trouble since Windows doesn't
show any information in the cards resource-infos but that it ain't working (say what?)
    *sigh*
    [ApoC]
    Edith says:
I remember problems with the APIC-Mode on many nForce-2 Boards. Could this still be a problem? Any infos on that matter yet?

  • Can K8N sli Platinum be upgraded for PCIE 2.1?

Hi. Quick question as per the subject. Can the K8N sli Platinum motherboard BIOS be updated to recognise a PCIE 2.1 MSI R5570 graphics card.
We did one BIOS update using the Live Update online thing but when we try and check to see if another newer update is now due the PC shuts down and says that we have got to undo an overclocking thing!!! The BIOS update was dated something like July 08 and I don't know if PCIE 2.1 was around then.
I now assuming that there isn't a BIOS update for this motherboard to allow PCIE 2.1. Bit worried that the BIOS update that we did has done something bad although everything other than checking for the updates again seems to be working? Just putting Windows 7 on and that seems to be going fine.
Do I send the graphics card back, or can I upgrade the motherboard and still use all or a lot of the rest of the existing items like the CPU and the memory, or will a new motherboard which accepts PCIE 2.1 pretty much force an upgrade to the whole lot? CPU = AMD Athlon 64 3500+ and memory = Corsair (TWINX1024-3200XLPT) 1024MB (2x512M Matched Pair). Things like wireless and disk drive etc shouldn't need changing would they?
    Thanks

No, the board is too old
Based on posts on this forum, i bought Radeon HD 4770, so not to get 5xxx series, i was eager to get. But nevertheless MSI K8N Diamond won't boot with 4770. Error code says it halts on "Testing VGA Bios".
And when searching for possible fixes i came upon AMD forum where people were complaining about the 5xxx series not working with nForce 4 chipset, but most of them got an easy fix - email the support of the mainboard company and recieve new BIOS - so all the Gigabyte users got their machines running by just sending 1 email and waiting for few hours.
I do hope MSI will respond and be as generous as the rivals, otherwise it will look bad for future buyers.

K8N SLI Platinum - BIOS Update

Sorry, I'm dozzy...     I've since discovered that it's a 219 Mhz problem, there's a sticky in the overclocking section on how to overcome it, and it doesn't apply to me anyway, 'cause I've got a Venice...

  • MSI k8N SLI Platinum - dead??

    Hello,
I have started the PC as per usual. Pushed the power button... nothing. Then again... nothing. Then I swithed off from the switch near the mains entry. and switched on... PC started however I get nothing on the screen. No beeps.
I have an Antec Truecontrol 2.0 power supply, an MSI K8N SLI Platinum (socket 939) with AMD Athlon, 2 GB Corsair TWINX Ram, three HDDS SATA, Raptor 75GB as Primary (C:) and another two WDS. Video Card: BFG 7800GTX+ 256MB OC, PCI - Express.
System has functioned Ok for three and a half years at least. I have replaced the Northbridge Fan from the beginning with a Blue heatsink - I believe Zalman. No temp issues. No overclocking, I am not using any commander modes etc etc.
When I look at the D-Bracket I get Memory Init Error (RED-GReen-Red-Red). I am pretty sure it is not the RAM. I pulled the RAM, used only one stick... same error.
I pulled the video card out. Then interestingly the system reaches the phase just before booting and the D_Bracket shows Floppy Init error (Green-Red-Green-Green). I tried moving the video card to the second PCI -ex - I also reach the Floppy Error point. I put in a crappy PIC-Ex video card - I reach the same Floppy init point - the floppy actually seeks but does not try to read. Unfort I forgot where I put the Monitor adapter thingy so I can;t check if I get anything on the screen with the crappy PCI-Ex video card. Will get it... soon...
I have a hard time determining whether it is the Video card or the mainboard. I have pulled the battery out, left overnight, pushed the BIOS reset... nothing helped. With Video Card in PCI-Ex slot 1, I get the memory init error. With the card in PCI-Ex slot 2 or with no card or with crappy PCI-Ex, I get to the Floppy Init point.
Could it be that at that point I would be getting a VGA error that I cannot see on the screen ? Why then NO BEEPS? Does this Mobo model not beep, just uses the D-Bracket?
It is important - if it is the mobo I am done for, I have to buy Mobo, RAM, CPU... $1,000. If it is the Video card I may find something 1 slot wide and similar to the BFG ...
Can anyone help narrow this please ?
BTW on the screen I get NOTHING, if I pull out the cable the monitor says - check connection, if I plug it in the monitor goes to power saving.
    Thank you Heaps

Put a stick of memory in there of el-cheapo brand.
Those Corsairs you have need more voltage to start if I'm not mistaken.
Found out what the prob was - the BFG 7800GTX was DEAD. RMA-ed the card. the MSI Mobo is Ok

  • K8N-SLI Platinum strange behaviour

    Hi there
Apart from the northbridge making a weird noise sometimes when the motherboard is on it's side (i.e. tower case standing upright), the motherboard started behaving strangely on saturday
first the computer refused to find my network, always assigning a local ip, so i tried rebooting the router a few times, and then checked my other computer which is connected to the router fine
then i tried to play a game and noticed the sound had gone, and then the game kept quitting barely after i started it so i gave that up
then, after i had to move the mouse between this one and another computer, the usb ports (all of them, no matter whether through pci card or on motherboard, the mouse stopped working
throughout all of this i rebooted many times.
i finally gave up in the evening, and the next morning on a whim i turned the computer on and everything was fine, what's going on?!?! is this linked to the northbridge at all? i've monitored all the fans and temps and all are normal and running constantly ( cpu never above 40c)
is the motherboard losing it, or maybe the power supply (all voltages seem normal too...)

i was going to take the motherboard back, but now it's working fine i'm sure they wont accept it
    please help
    thank you in advance
    Reaps

Possible suggestions are as follows: Although the manual states that your power supply should be 450w or above i think that with your PSU your fairly border line. Remember that your psu will only draw the power that it requires and as soon as you start putting 256 Mb graphics cards and upgrading to more ram it is using even more resources and can cause your system to have all sorts of dramas and Re-boots.With your network connection problems this could be due to either network problems in your area which BT or your telephone provider can help you with or as i have recently found out.. too many net work connections that may conflict with each other.Go to your controll panel,Network and internet connections then network connections you should have your broadband or dial up connection listed. If you have more than one connection listed and for instance you dont use LAN (local area connection) Networking then you will have to uninstall this connection and disable all Lan options from the Bios i.e nVidia Mac LAN, nVidia Mac LAN ROM, Marvell Gigabit LAN, Marvell Gibyte rom.A possible other prob may be to disable your IEEE 1394 connection from the bios as i had similar problems to yours but am now okay. I am not saying any of these are related directly to your problems however they are possibilities which you may like to try. Please note also that your USB problems can be solved by using the latest Bios update (which i personally have never had any problems with) but may be risky if you have no idea how to flash your bios. My advice on this would be to read the moderators (Bas..i think) instructions as to how to do this or as he suggests unistall all your motherboards usb drivers that were installed from the disk provided by your Motherboard Manafacturer, Re-boot and let windows re-install its own USB drivers which certainly worked for me.

Hi. I don't speak english very vell, so sorry
A bought an MSI K8N SLI Platinum mainboard, 7800 GTX Videocard and I don't know use it with NON SLI mode   If the SLI card there in NON-SLI mode, my pc isn't run. Just black screen, and the D-Bracket is show, that the booting is stopped in memory-control (second LED is red.) If I turn my SLI card for SLI mode, accordingly the PCI-E bus is 8x and my PC is run.
My problem is that, that I don't know run my pc in PCI-E x16
I tried 6 BIOS, but always was this is the problem

First, search the internet for a free translater program and cut n paste.  Second, you need to place the graphics card in the pcie slot next to the cpu.  Third, you need to make sure the SLI switch card is placed "non-sli" with the arrow pointed towards the graphics card.  Finally, you need to make sure your SLI switch card is fully in place so the copper teeth dont show (I made that mistake and my rig didnt boot either).  Just my 2 cents.
    1st -- ok
2nd - the video card is there next to the cpu in 1st PCI-E bus
3rd -- the SLI switch card is placed non-sli with the arrow pointed towards the graphics card.
fin --- well, i have no idea about this, 'couse after i've removed the card, i could not push it back to its place fully anymore, so the copper teeth show up. I also tried to force it with a screwdriver, but it didn't work. but i can turn on the card holder
