Moved photoshop elements 9 from a failed imac to a new one.

It will not activate. Error code 6. The error message also states "de-install and re-install". App is inert. Nothing works. What is my best move?

For activation problems there is a specialist Chat service at http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-deactivation-products.html. They should be able to reset your code on the spot.

  • W do I transfer Photoshop Elements 9 from my old computer to my new one?

I want to transfer Photoshop Elements 9 from my old computer to my new computer running Windows 8. I don't need to transfer photos. Just the software. Is this going to be a pain?

no problem, just re-install pse 9 onto your new computer and activate with your serial number.
if you no longer need the original pse 9 installation, deactivate it (help>deactivate) and then uninstall it.
if you need the installation file for pse 9 and if you follow all 7 steps, you can dl a trial via one of the links on this page:  http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-9-premiere-elements-9-direct-download-links.h tml
and activate with your serial number.
if you have a dl problem, you didn't follow all 7 steps.  typically, failure to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 is the problem.

I share this person's pain.  And was just now about to ask the same question.  So, in effect we're screwed.  I have the disc but without a drive I think E12 and this computer is going to have a very short life in my life.  And for the life of me, why is so darn hard to get questions answered by Adobe?  Good grief...I have 2 books and have saty through enough video "tutorials" to last me for some time!

If you have a CD for your product (I assume that is where you got the serial number from!!) then you can insert it in the drive on your new machine and install it in the usual way.
If the new machine hasn't got a CD/DVD drive then you can use another machine and copy the contents of the CD to a flash drive and use the USB port on the new machine to install the product.
Of course you can buy an external DVD drive and use it as well if that is what you want to do.
If, however, you don't have a CD for your product then I am afraid it is difficult to download it from Adobe website.

Don't migrate wirelessly unless you have a very fast wireless connection. Anything other than 5 GHz 802.11n is likely to take an unacceptable amount of time.

If you have lost your serial number then the first thing you should do is to check your DVD if it is attached on the sleeve of the DVD.  Also, if you registered your product withy Adobe then your account should have a record of your serial number.
If neither of this apply then you can browse the Amazon website and look for a bargain on PSE12.  PSE12 runs better on new computers and you also get updates for new cameras.
It looks like you have to buy a new product because serial numbers are not something you can get free of charge here.
    Good luck.

  • I can't migrate files from my old imac to a new one.

I can't migrate files from my old imac to a new one. I'm using a firewire 800 to a thunderboldlt adapter, my new imac doesn't find the source. Would a usb 2 to usb 2 work?

Did you put your old iMac in Target Disk mode? You need to do this to use Migration Assistant to transfer your files to the new iMac.
Hold the T key while your old iMac is starting up to start up in Target Disk mode. After doing this, your new iMac will detect it as an external drive, so now you can transfer your files through Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872?viewlocale=en_US

I may have found an answer here:

They only thing I can assume is that my external hard drive was slow to start and iTunes defaulted to its old directory (see the last paragraph at the link above). However, once my external was recognized shouldn't everything have fixed itself?

  • Can I use TM to transfer data from my current iMac to a new one?

I have a new iMac and I would like to migrate my old iMac into the new one. I have thought of connecting the old to the new one and using Migration Assistant, but I am wondering if it would make more sense (if possible) to do this through the old Imac's Time Machine backup.
I was wondering if anyone knew how to help me with this. I am looking at migrating everything.
    Thank you!

Sure, you can use the TM backup via Migration Assistant. When you run Migration Assistant you will have an option to restore from a TM backup instead of another Mac. Just connect your TM backup drive to the new computer but don't turn on TM until you've finished your migration.
Do not migrate "everything." Your old machine may have a different version or build of OS X than the new one. If the old machine is a PPC machine then you may have components that are incompatible with the new machine. See the following:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)

    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft

If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • When transferring data from my old iMac to a newer one do the old Apple apps like iWorks override the new versions installed on the newer computer?

When transferring data from an older iMac to a newer iMac (refurbished) do the Apple applications like iWorks replace the ones on the newer  computer?
I have read how to transfer data and using setup assistant but I am concerned about applications from Apple having the same names.

As you likely know legacy apps that are PPC based will not migrate over. However the data files will. I would urge you to inventory the apps you have and their data files to see how important they are and then look app by app to see what app replacements are available. If you are using Office for Mac prior to the 2008 version you will need to get a new license of the app because the 2004 version was PPC based. The files will come over and are readable by newer version of Office for Mac (I recommend the 2011 version) and also readable by the iWorks apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) but those are different apps than Office and work differently and do not have all of the features of the MS Office apps. This is really only a issue if you share files with MS Office users, if you use them for personal work then iWork may be just fine for your needs.

when i try to drag the gfilm plug-ins from my old hd to my new one, i get "plug-ins folder cannot be modified".
is there a way for me to enable the folder to be modified so that the plug-ins are available to me when working in fcp5?

At that point you should get an AUTHENTICATE option...it will say AUTHENTICATE and OK.

  • Moving Photoshop Elements catalogues from a PC to a Mac

I have created several photo catalogues on my PC using Photoshop Elements 7. I have now moved to a Mac computer. I have imported my photos tom my new computer, and into iPhoto. However I would like to continue organising and editing them with Photoshop Elements. To this end I intend to purchase the Photoshop Elements for Mac software. However if I do this how to I move the catalogue (and stack details) for my photo collection to the Mac? Grateful for some advice.

And presumably once i have checked everything has imported correctly, i can then delete those photos in iPhoto that I now have duplicates of in my new Mac PSE folder? This would then provide a sort of safeguard on the transfer process. Will all the stacks, catalogues etc. in the new Mac PSE file be the same as on my old PC PSE file? As I have a lot of very old family photos from the early part of the last century i have numerous edits of each photo. These all appear separately in iPhoto. Presumably they will appear stacked as one photo in my new Mac PSE file? Apologies for these aggravating little questions but I want to make sure everything will be OK before starting the process.
