Moved Project To Knew Computer After Everything Is Named-Drive Formatting?

Did search, and seems to be a common problem, but there are a little differences. In the past, when moving project, after starting, everything just showed up. This time, the red lines everywhere. Tried renaming file to clip and vice-versa, and nothing. Double-checked and have all the media. I thought the pathway pointers were imbedded, maybe not. Do have sub-clips. Did hear some talk about how the original media(P2 DV)is saved, can affect it. Was original saved to portable firewire drive that is Fat 32 to capture P2 in the field for Macbook pro. New media drive is extended. Any help is appreciated.

Assuming that you have canvas and/or viewer set to "image" not "wireframe" the only thing I can say is that you double check again that you have the most updated version for Motion or a version that your FCP version would expect to connect with. I have seen other people experiencing this, the answer could be the awkward worst case scenario you want to avoid or simply an update inadvertently missed. Rather difficult to establish without investigating further within your actual workstation.

  • Trouble moving projects from one computer to another

In the prospect of clearing up space, I am moving projects from my hard drive to an external.  In order to make sure things are moving properly I open up a project from the external onto another computer, different from the one I moved the projects off of.  When I open up the project, part of the original footage (.MTS file) does not show up in the timeline.  The blue rectangle that represents the footage is striped.  When I open up the exact same project onto the original computer from the external everything is fine.
Also, when I was opening up a project from the external to the other computer the "Locate Media" pop up appears wanting me to link all the media, but all the media has been checked off, as if all the media has already been found.  Why does it do this?
    Thanks,
    Josh

    Hi Josh,
Check this out: Moving projects to another computer: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1BF3BAAB-A930-44e3-8DFA-50D5C58A1A1Aa.h tml#WS3D22F379-B6C7-4d8c-9548-26AA3E1EA74F
Likely you have some of the MTS file structure missing. The best way to move projects, IMHO, is to use the Project Manager.
    Thanks,

  • Moving Projects from One Computer to Another

Is there a good way to do this?
To be clear I mean the project, not a completed video

To edit a project on another computer, you will need both the Project file and any event files that it references.
You will need an external drive formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled) - not FAT32.
Firewire and USB will both work fine for this.
In iMovie, click VIEW/Group Events By Disk.
Now you should see your external drive at the bottom of the Project Library List view. Hold down the Command Key while dragging the small icon for your project to the small icon for the external drive.
Now, with the Project still selected, click FILE/CONSOLIDATE Media... and you can move over the Events, Music, and Photos for the project to the external drive as well.
Plug this drive in to the other Mac and you are ready to edit.

  • "need to restart computer" after switching laptop hard drives.  HELP!

i have a 13" macbook pro. I just got an older generation 15" macbook pro (refurbished from apple) because i need the pci port.
    i switched the memory
    i switched the hard drives
15" macbook pro (the one i just got) works like a charm
13" macbook pro keeps prompting me to restart the computer after the apple picture comes up. In other words, snow leopard won't even boot up
    Any suggestions???

If you switched drives then your new computer now has an older version or an older build of OS X that cannot boot the new computer because it does not have the required hardware support extensions.
You have two options: 1. Switch the drives back; 2. Reinstall OS X on the new computer using the discs that came with it. This will not erase your files but it will install a fresh copy of OS X that works with your new computer. A reinstall will take about one hour plus or minus.

  • I moved files off my computer to an external hard drive now time machine won't back up like it used to.  It says there is not enough room.

My hard drive was completely full (mostly with pictures) so I moved several years worth of photos from the hard drive to an external hard drive I regularly use with the laptop. (Basically my master copies of all my photos back to 1997)  I have always had Time Machine set up to back up both the laptop AND that external drive.  It's always worked seamlessly until I moved those files.  Time Machine has been full for a while now and regularly gives me a message that the oldest files will be deleted.  That's fine.
I don't understand why moving files from the laptop to the external hd would now cause the following message (not an exact quote): Time Capsule cannot complete backup.  You need 233 gb to backup and time capsule only has 107 gb available. If time capsule was already set to backup up both the laptop and the external hd, why would moving those photos from one hd to the other cause a space issue?  It should equal out.   And now when I look at the files on the time capsule, it only shows me a recent backup and a partial incomplete backup.  None of the older backups are visible anymore. I have not deleted anything directly from the time capsule so I'm thinking somehow the index got damaged.  How can I fix this?  The error message says to change the settings but I really don't know what settings to change.  Help!!

It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

  • Moving project to another computer with content on a different drive letter.

I have to install a Premiere Pro Film Project with almost 1 TB linked raw materual on a new computer.
on the old computer the project files were under "E" :
    01_PROJECT_FILES
    02_FOOTAGE
    03_AUDIO
    04_GRAPHICS
    05_OUTPUT
    06_MASTER
    07_ENCODINGS
    08_SUBTITLES
    09_ERROR
    10_AE
Except for the Folder 01_PROJECT_ FILES all other folders were empty on "E". All the folders on E are also on an external drive, which was always called "H". On the external drive all the folders are full except for the first folder 01_PROJECT_FILES which is empty. My question: where do I import/ copy the Folder from E 01_Project_Files? On the 500 GB Samsung EVO SSD, which is called "C" on my new computer or the normal drive 1000 GB HDD 5400U/min., which is called "D", or do I have to create an extra partition called "E" on my new computer? I just want to prevent to link all  the raw material again to the project.
    =================================
Retitled by moderator to cut to the chase.

Thank you! Its really great. Because I only had the project files on the internal drive of the old computer and all the footage on an external drive, which I always called "H", I could copy the media folder with the project files on the SSD drive of the new computer. And then I just  renamed the external drive "H" and I didn't have to relink a single file. Everything was linked correctely after opening the project file (also the older versions).
Thank you! I am so happy not having to relink every single file.
    Best regards!

  • Moving music to new computer via an external hard drive

I need to move my music library to my new laptop. On my old computer, my music was stored on an external hard drive. I want to use that hard drive to copy my music onto the new laptop. I've installed iTunes and used the default library for my music on the laptop. I think I just need to shut down iTunes, plug in the external drive to the laptop and then copy my music to the designated library. Will that work? Also - big question. How do I copy the artwork, playlists etc. from my old computer? Do I copy the xml and itl files from the C drive on the old computer and overlay these files on the laptop? Any help is greatly appreciated.

First of all, he has 30,000 songs, so moving things could be an issue
Ya, it will take a LONGGGG time to transfer that much stuff from the external to the internal, so that is part of the reason I suggest trying to run it off the external first like he does currently with his older computer. The other reason is that he likely has the database files, artwork folder, etc. on the internal and the media files on the external, so everything is not self contained in one place so a little more effort to consolidate, so better to do it one step at a time.
    clemsongal88 wrote:
    1. Will I be able to use a flash drive or something to copy the itl, xml, etc. from the C drive to the new laptop (this is the iTunes folder you were referring to, right?) If so, I copy the whole iTunes folder from the old computer to a flash drive, go to the laptop, rename the existing iTunes folder on the C Drive and then copy from the flash drive onto the laptop.
Yes, flash drive should work or even the external drive itself can be used. If the new computer has had iTunes already installed and run, then it should already have the same iTunes folder in place. Assuming the library is empty, just go ahead and delete the current version on the new computer and then copy in the iTunes folder off the thumb drive (from the old computer) into the same place as the one you just deleted.
In theory, when you open iTunes, it is going to go to that folder for the .itl database file and it should find the one from the old computer and open it up.
    clemsongal88 wrote:
    2. Plug external drive into the laptop

    4. Hopefully iTunes on the laptop will recognize the database - so at that point will it put it all his music onto the C drive of the laptop?
Correct. Ideally it should open up and his old library will pop up looking like it did on the old computer.
If the library comes up blank, then for some reason is didn't read the .itl file and may be looking somewhere else for it and will have generated a new .itl file where ever that is. If that is the case, you can close iTunes, then reopen it using those instructions (hold down the Shift key while starting iTunes from the Start menu I think it is). It should then ask you if you want to create a new library (no) or open an existing library (Yes!). You want to open existing and then point iTunes to the .itl file from the old computer that you copied into the new computer. It should open the library up correctly.
    clemsongal88 wrote:
If not, all I have to do is make sure on the Advanced tab that it is pointed to the C drive and then do 'consolidate'?
No. That part is the next step.
What we did above is we got the new computer to open the old library and able to access it from the external hard drive. So at that point, you are running iTunes like the old computer, where the library is stored on the external and that database files on the internal.
The advanced tab setting and CONSOLIDATE commands were to address your second question about how to get it all back into the internal drive of the new computer so you no longer have to use the external drive. So after we have confirmed the library works, when run off the external, next step is to tell iTunes we want it to use the internal drive for now on and we set that in the preferences to change the location of the "iTunes Music folder" from the external drive back to the internal drive, typically putting it into the iTunes folder.
When you change this location, nothing will happen. All this does it sets up where iTunes will store any NEW/FUTURE additions to the library. So if you wanted you can leave all the stuff on the external, change the location to the internal, and new stuff added would now be put on the internal drive while anything on the external drive will remain where it is and will be accessed from there. So you can have iTunes access media from a number of locations if you want.
But in your case, you want to bring everything back together again. The CONSOLIDATE command does one simply thing. Anything not currently in the "iTunes Music folder" location, as set in the preferences, is copied into that location and the database updated so iTunes uses that copy now. So if you had stuff scattered all over different drives, they will now all be self contained in the single location. In your case, we are taking advantage of the consolidate command to make iTunes move the library from one location (the external) to another (the internal) and update the links.
As noted, Consolidate copies the files, so it is up to the user to remove the old copies if needed. Not a big deal for you since everything is on the external and you are just going to unplug it. But if you had tunes scattered all over your internal drive and then used CONSOLIDATE to bring them all into the single folder location, the original copies will remain scattered all over the internal drive, but now ignored by iTunes.

    Hello Kerrigaj,
After a re-install of OS X 10.5.8 uninstalled the E71 in iSync and moved it out of the bluetooth-device list first and completely re-installed it using the bluetooth manager (SystemPreferences/Hardware).
No extra thirdparty-software involved and ever since no problems.
Goodluck - hope it works for you.

I am trying to re-instal Acrobat Pro on my computer after changing OS and resetting everything. I am using the CC panel for installation. It shows it installed and won't let me install it. I doubled check everything on my computer and it is not installed. Even more, all my PDF files now show an HTML extension rather that PDF and only opens in my browser, which means the program is not here.
How to re-install it, please, when the CC panel installer won't let me do it? Thanks!

    Try "Pacifist"!
Pacifist is an application for Mac OS X that opens up .pkg installer packages, .dmg disk images, .zip, .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .pax, and .xar archives, and more, and lets you install individual files out of them. This is useful if you need to install just one file out of a package instead of the entire package

  • Playlists not showing up after moving itunes to new computer

moved itunes to new computer and used an externa;l harddrive to move "iTunes" folder over.  the most recent "setup" of itunes on old computer is not showing on new computer.  For example "music" file size on external drive is 133GB - on new computer itunes, only 33GB.  and, playlists have disapeared.  any ideas?

See Make a split library portable for some background on moving the library successfully. You need the main iTunes library.itl file, its supporting files and the Album Artwork folder as well.
If you can find that data it should be possible to put everything together in the right shape and make it work.
Otherwise I have two scripts called ImportDevicePlaylists and SyncStats which may prove useful.

  • Moved iMovie 09 project from one computer to another - now timing is wrong!

    Hello,
I wanted to copy some Events and Projects from my Dad's older MacBook Pro to my iMac. So I just copied the event folders (from <Home Directory>/Movies/iMovie Events/) and the project files (from <Home Directory>/Movies/iMovie Projects/) to the corresponding folders on my iMac.
I then opened up iMovie on my iMac and saw that the Events and Projects were there. So far, so good.
The first problem I noticed was when I exported one of the projects from my iMac using QuickTime. The duration of the resulting .MOV file was about 30 seconds shorter than the duration of the project!
I watched the Project in iMovie, and found that the clips in the Project were 'cut off'. For example, the clip in the Project would say it was 10 seconds long, but when you played the Project the clip was only 7 seconds long.
How could this be? Is the speed of the Project somehow tied to the computer that created the project? i.e. perhaps the speed of the processor could impact this? I highly doubt it, as it would make it impossible to move projects from one computer to another.
Bottom line - the identical Project file on my iMac (with the same underlying events) will produce a different exported movie file than the exact same Project file on my Dad's laptop. Specifically, my version will be shorter and the clips will be cut off.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated....

The macrumours link just telss you how to move the events which is relatively straightforward.
Alot of advice just seems to rest with leave the projects on your internal drive as they don't take up much space.
However, http://karsten.schluter.googlepages.com/im08tricks has a description of how to move the projects and then 'fool' imovie into where the projects are stored.
Not very flexible but it does allow you to 'clear' your macbook yet when you restore the sym-link file to the right place and restart imovie you can reconnect to all your old projects and events without yellow triangles of death appearing.
By the by apple needs to sort this out as archiving old projects and events together and preserve the editing is a really basic requirment I think.
PS anyone found out how to merge projects yet? Another basic function that seems to be lacking.

  • Moving project breaks merged clips...

    Hello,
This is a complex and difficult problem to describe by writing, apologies if it's not clear. I've been working for several months on a large project that was shot double system: video imported as Pro Res (shot in HDV) and audio (recorded on DAT) that was transfered to aiff files. So I had 43 cassettes of video (with each shot automaticall being it's own clip - as it was HDV) and then 13 one hour aiff files of the DAT audio. In FCP I broke down each video clip and synced it with it's audio and created merged clips. I had trouble while creating the merged clips as detailed in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1818825&tstart=0). Originally the merged clips when opened has the audio and video totally out of sync and were useless, and when I went back and made the reel names match between the DAT aiff files and the video, then the re-merged the clips they were in sync. So everything has been okay since then.
Now, after working for months on one computer, I moved the entire project to another computer. I copied all of the files from the old computer into the new computer so the files and everything are the same. But upon opening the project on the new computer everything is offline and I need to re-connect all of the media. However when I do reconnect it all, now all of my merged clips (there are atleast 2000 of them) are all out of sync again (of note, when I reconnect I always get the error message "reel names doesn't match" and I choose "continue" as when ever I choose "try again" it wont reconnect the media). Is there any other way around this issue other than having to go back and spend another 3 weeks laboriously manually changing the reel names of and re-re-mergeing each of the thousands of indivdual merged clips (in order to have them be useable, in-sync merged clips)? Even if I do this, I know that in a few weeks I will be bringing the project back to the orginal computer, and again everything will be off line and then I'll have to once again change reel names for each clip, and re-re-re-merged them to get it all working again. Does anyone have any ideas or insights into this issue? Has anyone else atleast had to deal with this issue? Thanks!

It sounds like when you moved the material, you simply copied the folders instead of using Media Manager.
Preventing your problems is why MM exists. While MM may have it's detractors (I've been one of them), it has been improved in the more current FCP versions.
Read very carefully through the section in the Manual that covers it then use it to create a transportable copy of your project.

  • Moving projects between external hard drives lose clips

Sorry for the unclear subject line, but I really can't think of a quippy way to say what the problem is.
Short version--I moved project from external hard drive A to external hard drive B. Worked on A. Worked on B. Moved it back to A (still have copy on B). No longer works on A. Clips show up in the timeline, but on screen is white. Transitions, titles, audio don't work. Still works on B.
    Ideas?
Long version--I'm using 10.3.9 on my old Powerbook. iMovie 6.0.3. I am using Lacie Porsche 250GB external and a Mercury Elite Pro 500 GB hard drives. When I started, the Lacie, which I was using for my speaking career videos, was NOT formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled). So, while working on another project, I had issues with the infamous Ken Burns bug with pictures.
After consulting with the experts here (thanks Karl), I determined that I must reformat. So, pain and anguish, I moved the various movies off of the Lacie (Drive A) to the Mercury (Drive B). On both, the movies worked fine--all transitions, everything. The Mercury was and is Mac OS Extended (but NOT Journaled).
So, I wipe the Lacie with Disk Utility so it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Once finished, I begin the process of moving projects (3 in total) back to the Lacie. Two of the projects are completed works with transitions, audio file, titles and the like. One is just clips in the clip pane, none in the timeline. I moved them all at once.
When I did, I checked them before I would delete them off the Mercury. When I did, both of the completed projects loaded properly--the clips do show in the timeline. But, in the preview window, all I have is a blank white screen. When I play, nothing happens.
I have not erased anything, changed anything, thrown anything away--nothing. And, they still work perfectly on the Mercury (same computer, obviously).
This one really has me stumped. I am really irked that iMovie has apparently become such a messed up program. Worse, this has been out for some time now (I had not used it yet, but I got iLife last year some time). I can't believe there are all these issues all this time later and obviously Apple has done nothing or little to correct these problems. I consider iMovie a real flagship program to model the ease of use and blah blah blah that we all know concerning Apple.
OK, sorry for venting---anyone with any ideas? Did I mess up the drive when I wiped it? Is this merely the program? Something between the fact that the Mercury is NOT Journalled? Any help will, as always, be appreciated.

    Thanks David---
The Permissions are the same for both, on both hard drives.
I have not repaired permissions on either.
I did shut down the computer last night and this AM, upon starting again, had the same problem.
I did attempt a few fixes--I moved the clips from the timeline back to the preview pane. I had one clip already there and it would play perfectly. When I did that, with a clip from the timeline and then moved it back, it would show up and play. But, upon hitting the next clip, it would stop playing at the first transition.
Some of the transitions are from a Third Party (Gee). Remember, though, they played perfectly fine from Drive B. I have not attempted, however, to put the Gee effects into iMovie 6. As I said earlier, I haven't used the program on my computer since the Fall. Now, using 6.0.3, I don't see my GeeThree effects anywhere, nor have I tried to put them in. But, from the Drive B (and originally in the drive A), the movie plays fine even though the added clips are not present for me to use in any new project.
