  • Quietest CPU Cooler for K8N Neo 2 Platinum Motherboard?

I am just now getting around to concentrating on making my system as quiet as possible (without water cooling).
Searching the forum and the net, I found lot of favorable comments about the Zalman 7700 cooler, but their website indicates it will not fit on the K8N Neo2 Platinum.  Has anyone actually tried to see it if fits or not?  Also if it does fit, will it work with the MSI stock backplate as I do not want to have to remove the backplate.
Any suggestions for other CPU coolers that are quiet that are known to fit on this mb?
Can people who have had experiences getting CPU coolers to work with this MB please post your experiences here?  If there are sufficent replies to make this thread useful, I will add it to the sticky section.
    Thanks.

  • Cpu Cooler For K8n Neo 2

    HI GUYS,
I HAVE SEEN DIFF. IDEAS ABOUT WHAT COOLER FITS THIS BOARD. COULD YOU PLEASE POST YOUR COOLING SOLUTIONS WITH THIS BOARD.
I AM INTERESSTED ABOUT THERMALRIGHT XP 120, SOME USERS SAY IT FITS AND SOME SAYS NOT.
    THANKS

I have the Swiftech MCX6400 on my new A643500+. I put one of those cool looking Coolermaster Dual Storm Fans here on it. Looks really cool and performs very well so far. But a little on the loud side.

  • MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum motherboard extra firewire ports?

I'm installing an MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum motherboard into my case and although I don't need them right now, I would like to be able to access the extra firewire ports. Does anyone know the best way to get ahold of the MSI motherboard 1394 connectors for J1394_1 / J1394_2 option?
I have the D bracket with the LED's and two extra USB connectors but I don't have the firewire connector. I have USB ports and audio ports on the front of my case which I will use, but no firewire connector, but there is a place for one, just no connector/wires or hardware. Also what is the difference between those two connectors shown in the picture of the optional firewire that appears in the owners manual? They have a different shape.
Where can I get one? I don't need the proprietary peice if I can use something else.

Fireware ports are faster for example external drives will be fastest 1394 rather than usb2.
there are many companies doing drive bays which can add ports to your current case see Front Port Extension Unit however you need to decide what exactly you want,
The example shown passes through case & connects to rear ports.
I prefer ones hich connect to the mobo risers leaving rear ports free, however you then have the complexity of matching the pin outs so that it works with your system. Remember it's not like tring to boot, you may not get a 2nd chance if you miswire connection. . If you can find them the best connectors are those with single pin leads, where each individual wire has its own plug so that you can match it to the mobo's pin out diagram for the particular port.
    luck

  • Which drivers for K8N Neo 2 Platinum

I'm just about to place an order for a K8N Neo2 Platinum to go with my AMD 64 3000+ Winchester.
As is usual I normally download the latest relevant BIOS and drivers in advance so everything is ready to go when the hardware turns up.
However, looking at the MSI page, there seems to be a bewildering array of drivers for this board: Neo2 drivers and it's not exactly clear which ones are for my specific board.
For example, I can't seem to find a relevant SATA driver from the list.
The actual board I'm going for is this one from Overclock: link to board
Can anyone list clearly the drivers, BIOS and any other utilities I will need when installing this board?
    Thanks.

Well after a lot of reading, I've determined that the following files are applicable to my board:
    BIOS
    BIOS: 7025v14.zip
    Drivers
    NVIDIA nForce3 System Drivers: NF3_CK8S.zip
    Marvell LAN Drivers: MarvellWXP69.zip
Realtek ALC Series AC'97 Audio Drivers: Realtek_ALCXXX_73.zip
I still can't seem to find a SATA/IDE driver as none of the ones listed are compatible with a Neo2 Platinum.
The closest I can find is the Nvidia nForce3 SATA/RAID driver for Windows 2K/XP but that is only for K8N Neo Platinum (7030).
Anyone know if this is the same driver for the Neo2 Platinum (7025) also?
    Have I missed anything?
There are also lots of utilities, some of which appear to be useful, if not necessary:
    Utilities
    NVIDIA nTune: nTune_MB.zip
    MSI DigiCell: DigiCell_MB.zip
    MSI PC Alert 4: PCAlert4_MB.exe
    MSI Core Center: CoreCenter_MB.exe
    MSI Live Update: LiveUpdate.exe
    Fuzzy Logic 4: FuzzyLogic.exe
    MSI DMI Browser: DMIBrowser.exe
    MSI i-Speeder: I-SPEEDER.exe
    MSI WMI Info: WMIInfo.exe
    MSI PasswordKeeper: PasswordKeeper.exe
    MSI SecureDoc: SecureDoc.exe
    MSI InfoView XP: InfoView.exe
    MSI GoodMem: insgoodmem.exe
    MSI Lockbox: LockBox.exe
Anyone care to comment on the usefulness (or not) of any of those utilities?

  • Modded bios for K8N Neo-54G Platinum

    Hi,
i've noticed that there are some modded bios versions available for the K8N (i.e. at syar2003's collection). My question is now whats the difference between them and the MSI versions (especially between the latest 1.56 versions)?
Edit: Has anyone allready used the modded bios 1.56 and has he got any performance boost?

Hehe , don't consider yourself a retard for this .
MSI's naming of theese boards is pretty simular and can cause theese
kinds of confusions .You are not the first one .
Anyway it was good you got the mishap resolved so quick
and got up and running again.
Look for radical_53 's post he has made a "Neo2" bios with nvraid ide rom bios 4.66 . Send him a message and he will email it to you ,i'm sure.
Vdimm voltage is not coming any higher i think , either for Neo1 or Neo2 .
Guess it has to do with board design , selection of regulator IC , and
the fact that msi runs mem from the 3.3v line (some voltage level will always be missed due to the components and regulation)
If you want really high vdimm there is just one way and that is hardmodding
the motherboard and that can be a risky affair bothe for board/mem and cpu
    if things go wrong.
Other alternative is another mobo .
DFI's s754 takes vdimm from +5v and there is a modded bios that gives upto 4v for memory. They have a s939 board ready thats being betatested , but it's not released yet.
MSI K8N boards have pretty desent max vdimm compared to many others .
This is what i have found on some others :
    Gigabyte max VDIMM 2.7v
    MSI K8N Neo2 VDIMM 2.85v
DFI Lanparty UT VDIMM 4.0v (s754 with modded bios)
    Asus K8N VDIMM 2.8v (some PCB's max 2.7v)
    Epox VDIMM 2.8v
    Chaintech VDIMM 2.9v

  • Is a 24 pin atx cable needed for the k8n neo 4 platinum?

i have a Thermaltake Silent Purepower 480 Watt PSU. i am thinking about upgrading from an msi k7n2 delta to the k8n neo 4 platinum motherboard.
if i do this, do i need this adaptor cable?

    ryansebiz,
That Power Supply has the 24 Pin Cable as part of its cables. You do not need any adapters.

    Richard
thanks richard, you saved me $11 on a cable adaptor

Looking for feedback on K8N Neo NF4 Platinum SLI, LUV THIS BOARD

Im no pro but with your raid setup you need to stay with bios 3.0, 3.1 or 3.2.  I understand that 3.3 & 3.4 causes problems but the new 3.53 beta bios fixes the problems in 3.3 & 3.4.  See below:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=80933.120
Regarding your pcie clock, if you are using coolbits and nvidia drivers only (no MSI drivers at all), then I have used nvidia's ntune to help set the clock.  For my x1 msi 6600gt, working backwards from the bus speed optimization it equalled to 106...but I am really not good at this and you should post your question under the VGA portion of this forum for a better answer to that 1 question.
However, using MSI's DOT works well too and its automated.
Btw, the pcie setting has nothing to do with your cpu/memory overclock.

  • MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum Smart CPU Fan reports 0 rpm ?

    Hi
I have a MSI K8N Neo 4 Platinum (MS-7125) motherboard with an Athlon 64 3700+ CPU and an Arctic Cooling Silencer Ultra 64 HSF.
In the BIOS setup, in the 'Monitor H/W' area you can set something called the 'Smart CPU Fan Target'.
o  If I set this to disabled, it reports a fan speed of about 2,280 rpm.
o  If I set it to 40°C, it reports a fan speed of 0 rpm !  (the fan is turning)
The MSI Core Center utility and Everest Ultimate also both report the fan speed as 0 rpm.
I assume that if I disable Smart CPU Fan, the fan always rotates at max. rpm; if I set it to 40°C, the fan runs at a slow speed until the temperature exceeds 40°C, at which point it speeds up (likewise if I set it to 50°C or 60°C).  However, the fan IS turning.
Can anyone explain this ?  I would like the reassurance of having the CPU HSF speed reported.
Incidentally , the PSU is an Akasa AK-P460FG
       (3.3v = 30A, +5v = 30A, +12v1 = 14A, +12v2 = 15A)

Very old post yes but I feel the need to reply anyway because I have the same problem myself.
Very strange and would be nice to hear if any more of ya guys out there can see the same.

MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum Problem

A lot of things could be wrong but it will be easier to figure out if we know what you did.  When you say you changed settings in Bios, do you remember your last settings and what you did?
It might be helpful if you created a sig (as described in the forum rules) to show what you have in your system like my sig below. (Hint- use profile button in sign on screen.)
Things could be broken even if there is no visible evidence (such as flames or melted component) of course.
If I had to guess and your d-bracket reading is correct, corrupted bios requiring new bios chip, but let's not guess as a lot of things could be wrong and you don't want to invest in a new bios chip if the board cannot be brought back to life.  Consider removing parts and testing them in an other machine.  Start with CPU and memory?
    Good luck.

I have replaced my motherboard as I had thought it originally was a duff BIOS chip as despite reflashing it, it would rarely pass the POST.
All parts apart from the PSU are the original Kit which had been working for 13 months ish.
Problem i am experiencing is the D-Bracket 2 Diagnostic LEDs are coming up Red/Amber as opposed to Red/Green and the machine just sits there and never displays anything, hence why BIOS isn't mentioned as I have no idea what version is currently on the BIOS chip.
I have stripped out down to just CPU and still get the same problem, I then swapped it for a FX53 which I had lying around which I know worked as it came out of my Vapochill chassis and also swapped out for some OCZ PC3700 512MB EB Dual Channel Platinum 3-3-2-8.. still no joy.
Any ideas greatly appreciated as I don't want to rebuild my machine as it is exactly how I wanted it I feel I have checked everything but maybe someone can shed a little light.
Anyone want a spare mboard or two ?? I now have three !

Your Tagan's behavior was typical of a failing PSU... but the Turb-Cool model you mention doesn't exist at the PCP&C web site; in fact there are a total of five other 510 models, some of which have only an 8-pin CPU power connector, so it's impossible to figure which one you have.  Does your PSU have a 4- or 8-pin CPU power connector and, if the latter, how do you have it connected to the mbrd?  The only 8-pin CPU power connector I've seen could not be connected to a 4-pin socket, which your mbrd has... or does your mbrd have both 4- and 8-pin?
The only other thing I'd remark is that Vista will not run satisfactorily with your nForce3 mbrd and an ATI video card.

  • K8N Neo 2 Platinum Computer just...stopped working! Help needed please.

Hey all. About hmm, a month ago I built myself a new PC (first time I'd done it from scratch and got some useful help here) Specs were:
    MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum, A64 3200+ Venice, 1GB DDR Corsair Value, Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb, 40GB Hard Disk IDE, 80GB Hard Disk IDE, CD R/RW Drive and a Tagan 420W (23A 12V+) PSU.
Ok, it worked the day I built it just fine and has NO hick-ups or any indication of a problem for the past month. Running temperature was very cool etc. Now, I last turned it on about 24 hrs ago, downloaded some PDF files, shut it down. All was fine. Woke up this morning. Pressed the power button: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. ZIp. No hum, fan movement, anything.
Now, considering it seems to have broken whilst being turned off. What could be the problem? So far I've tried:
        * Using a different power socket
        * Using a different plug
        * Reconnecting the power switch and motherboard power connectors
None of those worked. There wasn't a thunderstorm or anything so I don't think any kind of surge would have been the problem. I havn't tried manually shorting the power switch connectors. What's a safe way to do that? Any other suggestions? How can I test my PSU is infact doing something?
    Thanks

    Quote from: go_for on 01-September-05, 21:47:40
Try the easy way first, disconnect every cable from the back of the computer. Do a CMOS clear/normal as instructed in the manual. Connect the display(with power off), keyboard and power cable. Turn on PSU, press power switch, if it fires up, press and go into bios and do your settings, save and exit. Power off and connect the rest of your external stuff. Power up.
    >
No luck :( Is it likely that my PSU has fused/broken in some way since I'm getting no response or fan movement?

  • Please help! K8N Neo 2 Platinum instability problems

    Hi!
At the fall of last year I bought new computer parts for a new system, the heart of it being a MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum. Ever since then I have had some instability problems. I tried for a while to fix them, but after a while lost the energy and have just accepted them. Now, however, I want to give this forum a try for help. The instability is irritating and I've been thinking of returning the motherboard.
    The system consists of:
    MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum
    2 x 512 MB Kingston Hyper X PC3200
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+
    Gainward Geforce 6600GT AGP
Trust 514DX 5.1 Sound Expert Optical
    120 GB Seagate SATA HD
    NEC DVD-RW ND 2510A
    Zalman ZM400A-APF PSU
Nothing is overclocked. I also have a Terratec TV-card that I never use.
I'm running Windows 2000. I have the latest BIOS, 1.C.  I have tried many different Nforce drivers, right now I'm running MEI's nWare Release 06.05a.
The driver for the GPU is 91.28. Every other driver should be the latest there is.
The problem I have is that the system freezes up in Windows now and then. The "funny" thing is that I can run Memtest 86 for a whole day, Windows memory diagnostic all the way trough and I can play games (most of the time) for hours. I have also had the computer doing video compression for days and days, so I would say that it seems kind of rock solid. The freezes seems to happen (I'm guessing) when there is lots of communication going on over the southbridge. It often happens when the HD is working and the CPU perhaps get loaded at the same time, or for example if I'm ripping data from a DVD and starts doing something CPU heavy at the same time. That is an almost guaranteed recipe for freezing. Sometimes it freezes when I'm doing "nothing", but I guess it might also be when Windows is swapping, or something.
I remember reading about problems like this before, with other motherboards. I'm thinking that perhaps some BIOS latency thing could fix it. Perhaps a hacked/tweaked BIOS? Or is the motherboard in fact busted and needs to be returned?
Any thoughts, ideas or tips are welcome. Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

  • K8N Neo 4 Platinum Sli & Athlon 64 3200

Somebody know if the mobo "K8N Neo 4 Platinum Sli" can work good with an Athlon 64 3200 (939)

    Quote from: jrb357 on 10-March-05, 11:29:32
It'll work just fine with a 3200+. Just use some quality TCCD ram. If you plan OC'n some people are having some difficulty getting over a 220fsb. It seems that the newer cpu's are more prone to this, ones with a manufaturing date of under 0451 seem to OC better.
    Aint that the truth!
IF you are planning to o/c then forget about this board for the moment, until a new bios is available......
That is the only downside to this board, otherwise its a very stable board!
I have corsair 4400 and cant get over 220 fsb with it....
