MOVED: ram compatability msi z87 g45
This topic has been moved to Intel Core-iX boards.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=171226.0
I also have a MSI Z87 G45 motherboard.
I tried 1 working RAM module in all 4 sockets while testing and my memory only works in the 2 sockets closest to the CPU. I get no display when putting RAM in the other sockets.
I have 4x4GB DDR3-2400 modules, Kingston HyperX Anniversary (KHX24C11X3K4/16X).
I also tried the flash the BIOS to the latest but no improvements.
I got older Kingston HyperX (DDR3-1866) that do work in the other sockets.
Do I need to configure my BIOS first before inserting the RAM in those sockets?

MOVED: MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G + MSI Z87-G45 incompatible? Noise on speakers
This topic has been moved to MSI Intel boards.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=184068.0Used hardware
MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G (+ RMA'ed new one)
Gigabyte 670 GTX Windforce
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming motherboard (with Intel i7-4770K, Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB, and Crucial M500 - 480GB SSD)
Asus P5N32-E with Q6600 and 8GB DDR2 (Going to test this)
SoundBlaster-Z Audio card
Roccat Kave 5.1 Gaming Headphones (4x 3.5 mm jacks: Front, Rear, Center&bass, Microphone + USB amp/volume control)
Corsair B600 (600W) PSU (secondary)
Corsair RM750 (750W) PSU (Primary)
To summarize
Corsair RM750 + MSI Z87-G45 + Gigabyte GTX 670 + Roccat Kave = really faint noise only when scrolling in browser, in game not heard
Corsair RM750 + MSI Z87-G45 + MSI GTX 970 + Roccat Kave = in game loud and heavy noise + screech when scrolling in browser
Corsair RM750 + MSI Z87-G45 + MSI GTX 970 + Soundblaster-Z + Roccat Kave = In game moderate to heavy noise
Corsair B600 + MSI Z87-G45 + MSI GTX 970 + Soundblaster-Z + Roccat Kave = In game weak to moderate noise
Corsair B600 + MSI Z87-G45 + MSI GTX 970 + Soundblaster-Z + Roccat Kave with Mic disconnected = Almost no noise, ifg you listen for it, really faint background noise in game. But well within my acceptable limits.
Tomorrow I'll try:
Corsair B600 + MSI Z87-G45 (onboard sound) + MSI GTX 970 + Roccat Kave without mic
Corsair RM750 + Asus P5N32-E (onboard sound) + MSI GTX 970 + Roccat Kave with mic
I failed to mention, that the first thing I did was to remove my HD Audio Front panel connector off its header.
So I did some more searches. The noise has something to do with the capacitors on (presumably) the video card. The higher the pitch usually coincides with higher FPS. So the interference must be coming from the video card, as this is the last thing added and probably the main cause.
Both the motherboard & the SoundBlaster-Z pick up the EMI/RF interference. (I am disappointed by the SoundBlaster about this).
I'll test with the older motherboard and see how I proceed from there. -
MSI Z87-G45 external test build - no flash screen with 2 G.Skill Ram sticks
Hi guys this is my first build and I'm encountering this issue on my test build.
I'm using MSI Z87-G45 MoBo, G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory, i5 4670k
RAM is only working one at a time. Both sticks work. They do not work alone in DIMM 3 or DIMM 4.
Any advice on what to do? could it be speeds/timing of the ram? this is my first build so any help is greatly appreciated!
I see that G.Skill sticky post, but since this is a test build outside of the case I don't have a keyboard attached or really any knowledge of how to alter the BIOS.Quote from: mvam on 13-May-14, 07:02:12
new ram - Corsair Vengeance... no luck.
any other ideas?
time for a new mobo? it has to be the mobo right? cpu?
One or the other. CPU can be ruled out if you know someone who can test it for you on another known working board. That leaves the mainboard as faulty. You could try a PSU power cord removed, battery removed for a short time, clear CMOS and try again with a RAM stick in DIMM2. -
MSI Z87 G45 + MSI R9 280X + Windows 8.1 secure boot difficulties
After updating to Windows 8.1 Pro I had the "Secure Boot isn't configured properly" watermark as many others. I determined my disk is GPT partitioned, I enabled UEFI on the GPU by moving the physical switch from the 2 position to the 1 position, and enabled Windows 8 Feature + Secure Boot with standard settings in the G45 bios (ver 1.5). After doing save and reboot I'm presented with a blank screen with my monitor showing a "DVI no input" message. I reset the CMOS to allow me to boot again, but after a couple more tries with the secure boot settings such as enabling/disabling Fast Boot I have not been able to get it to work.
System:
MSI Z87 G45
8GB DDR3 1600mhz Crucial ram
I5-4670k
MSI R9 280X
Samsung 840 SSD 250gb
Asus cd/dvd driveI want to know the same thing. I bought a MSI Z87-G45 Gaming motherboard this month and I can't activate Secure Boot on it because it's still in Setup Mode. I have no idea how to put the motherboard into User Mode and Google doesn't help me much further either. How to activate a key? I have a I5-5670K and GTX 770 by the way.

Hi All,
I would welcome some advice. I am about 4 months into a new machine build:
* MSI Z87 G45 GAMING motherboard
* i7-4770K Haswell 3.5 GHz & aftermarket heatpipe cooler
* 4 x 4Gb G.Skill SNIPER DDR3-2133 PC3-1700 (F3-17000CL11D-8GBSR)
* GeForce GTX 650 Ti w/ 2 Gb Video RAM
* Samsung 840 Pro 256 Gb SSD
* Thermaltake 700W Toughpower
* Win 7 Pro 64-bit SP1
The system seems to run fine at the default 1600 MHz RAM speed, however if I implement either of the X.M.P. profiles (which kick the memory speed up to the RAM's advertised speed of 2133 MHz), the system will occasionally (every 8 to 48 hours) freeze or BSOD. The BSOD stop codes are inconsistent in number (0x00, 0x41, 0x1E, 0xC4) and driver. When the system freezes, there is no consistent behavior. I am not doing any other overclocking besides using the X.M.P. profile in the memory.
RAM timing on the 2133 X.M.P. profile is: 11-11-11-30.
I have updated the BIOS to 1.5, including the ME, and updated all drivers in the system. All irrelevant hardware and drivers are disabled. Also I have done the following:
* MemTest+ 5.01 for over 30 hours, all 4 sticks in. No errors.
* Intel BurnTest on 'Very High', 10 passes, no errors
* Prime95 for over day with 90 C CPU temps constantly being hit. No errors.
* Unigine Valley Benchmark for 30 minutes; no issues
I increased V_DRAM from 1.60V (from the XMP profile) to 1.65V, and I also added +0.10V offset to increase the CPU I/O ANALOG , CPU I/O DIGITAL and SYSTEM AGENT voltages. Didn't seem to help. All other CPU voltages are default from [auto].
I rolled the memory speed back to the default 1600 MHz, and the system seems stable as a rock.
I don't really need to have the memory run at 2133 MHz, but it irks me that the system is not stable with the rated components, and I'm befuddled why the stress tests seem to pass just fine, then the system will randomly hang with arguably a far less demanding load than the stress tests.
Note that I have not yet:
* reset the CMOS when changing to X.M.P. Perhaps I should?
* reseated the graphics card or CPU. The latter will require R/R of the thermal grease, which I will do if needed, but it's a pain. Since the system is stable at 1600 MHz, I assumed that all basic systems are working as they should.
* Tried to work my way up in memory speed step by stem from 1600 to 2133 to see where things fall apart.
* Tested the video memory
I suspect main system memory, despite the clean bill of health from MemTest, and based on many of the comments to others with similar problems from the veterans on this board. I don't want to push the CPU voltages too much above the default/auto values, for fear of damage and reduced lifetime.
Also, the power supply is a nice unit from an older high-end gaming rig. It is rated at 700W. The PS does probably have over 30,000 hours on it (24/7 use for 3-4 years), however. Strange that it would work at 1600 MHz fine, and with only slightly more power load at 2133. I suppose stranger things have happened.
I've read the suggestions to run only 2 sticks, rather than 4, but I can't justify dropping $140 on new memory (I don't really need the extra speed benefit, it's more curiosity and just not knowing at this point).
Anyway, perhaps more seasoned souls than I can share their thoughts. The system is perfectly usable at 1600, but I'd really like to know where the lockups are stemming from. Troubleshooting is maddening because of the inconsistency in the long times before failure and lack of repeatability to reproduce the issue.
Thanks in advance for your time.
-PaulThank you both for the prompt replies. I'm learning a lot.
Turns out I also found this from G.SKILL in going over reviews of the memory modules I have. Another user had a similar configuration as mine and was having similar problems. G.SKILL replied:
Quote
We are sorry to hear you were unable to get two kits working in the same system. It is not guaranteed two kits can operate at the rated specifications since they were not pre-matched, tested, and guaranteed at factory. With multi-channel motherboards, perfectly matching memory is necessary to achieve high frequency. This is why we must offer high capacity 32GB, 64GB kits, otherwise we can just sell one module at a time and have you purchase as many as you need. Unfortunately, memory does not work that way. If you purchase a 16GB kit rated at DDR3-2133, you should have absolutely no issues. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly for assistance.
Thank you
GSKILL SUPPORT
Not knowing any better, I simply purchased two "kits" of 2x4 GB each and installed them. Perhaps worse, if the modules were matched, I may well have mixed them up so the matched modules don't even sit in the same channels 1/3 or 2/4. G.SKILL seems to have a pretty responsive board, so I'll ask them what they suggest.
Also in the end, I really just want a stable machine. This is a basically an office/engineering machine. My initial thinking was that if the system was unstable at 2133 then there is something wrong with it that needs to be fixed. It sounds instead like getting to 2133 is not guaranteed, and is much more of an art than simply throwing the modules in and powering up the system.
I'm perfectly happy at 1600 knowing the system is stable. Indeed realizing now that 2133 requires overclocking, I may well have backed off to 1600 even if everything had worked just fine at 2300, just to trade extra stability for the (small) performance improvement that I would likely never notice anyway.
I'll put together a post for the G.SKILL forums, and if I get anything useful I'll post what I learn here for completeness.
Thanks again for the fast and informative replies. It's much appreciated.
Best,
-Paul -
I'm having issues (again) with the MSI Z87-G45 motherboard. This is a replacement board from having to RMA my initial purchase. Brand new build and I cannot get any display. I have reseated the cpu, ram, and graphics card multiple times. I disconnected everything from the motherboard except for the essential items and I still do not get a display. I tried without a graphics card and was still unable to get a display. When using DVI the monitor goes into standby mode. When using VGA the monitor doesn't recognize it's hooked up to anything. I use this monitor on multiple computers in my house so 10000% sure it is not the monitor. All components are out of the case.
Components I have tested:
cpu: Intel Pentium G3258, Intel Celeron G3220
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45
gpu: MSI R9 280, MSI R7 260, no gpu
psu: EVGA 750w 80+ Bronze, Corsair CX430w 80+ Bronze
ram: Pny XL9 1600 DDR3 8gb stick, Kingston Fury 1866 DDR3 8gb stick
Is there something I'm missing or is this as simple as I received another bad board?So...

ram: Pny XL9 1600 DDR3 8gb stick, Kingston Fury 1866 DDR3 8gb stick
Are you mixing RAM??
Did you try to reser CMOS? >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
When I was very beginner, I had a computer with GPU, and I had similar problem: no display. Well, I was smart enough to plug my HDMI to on board HDMI port even though there was a GPU. So please make sure that you plug the cable to the graphics card.
Can you try different video cable? DVI/VGA/HDMI.
Intel Pentium G3258 will NOT work as your board BIOS is probably earlier than required for this chip to run properly. -
Hi,
my configuration:
MSI Z87-G45,
i5 4670k
2x8 GB ddr3 Patriot Viper 3 1600MHz CL9
Radeon HD 6870
PSU Corsair 550W
HDD SATA WD 500GB
SSD Corsair Force 3 128 GB
Windows 7 64bit
...and i have BSOD all time... At first I thought that the problem is SSD, but yesterday unplugget him and put normal HDD. And still got bluescreens. I updated BIOS to version 1.4, restored default settings and I tried to manually set the memory and enable/disable XMP profile. Memtest86 passed without problems. I changed SATA ports and dunno what more to do. Help please.Quote
no BSOD so far, so this mean that first ram piece is bad?
Have that RAM kit exchanged. Perhaps even consider a Corsair Vengeance or Vengeance Pro. http://www.corsair.com/us/memory-by-product-family/vengeance-pro-series-memory/vengeance-pro-series-16gb-2-x-8gb-ddr3-dram-1600mhz-c9-memory-kit-cmy16gx3m2a1600c9.html

This Stop error message usually occurs during installation when there was an attempt in kernel mode to touch pageable memory at too high a process internal request level (IRQL).
Ouch, I just rechecked your screenshot. That XMP profile calls for a CR of 3T. Your setting is 1T. That is one probable cause as per the error explanation above.
I would consider an alternative kit as 3T essentially points to a lesser quality memory chip on those modules. You can of course attempt to manually set your CR to 2T or 3T and see if it works for you. -
Hi
So i am buying a new MOBO, and as u can see from the title i am choosing between MSI Z87-G55 GL and MSI Z87-G45 Gaming. But i can't find any good comparisons other than that that one is blue and the other red and about 20$ more expensive. Some sites that list all the specs even imply that the G55 is better. So can anyone tell me what is the difference between then and which one should i buy?
Tnx for the repliesQuote from: Nichrome on 19-November-13, 02:05:56
I own z87-g45 gaming. All I think is that the Network Killer LAN, other then that, might be for example little difference between RAM OC'ing?
Just noticed that g55 doesn;'t seem to have Clear CMOS button on the back I/O panel? Not sure, just briefly overviewed it. If you don't mind the 20$, then go for the colour you like? I am not pro, but I am happy with my g45 gaming mobo.
----------------- EDIT ------------------
Just found on NewEgg that G55:
It says the board has integrated WiFi, but I'm not seeing any info about it in the specs. Anyone have experience with it? Would I be better off with a PCI card? Nov 13,2013
And apart from that difference (possibly, cant assure) G45 just looks a bit better (in my opinion).
Dylan B:Currently it comes with a free wireless adapter, but I don't see anything in the specs about integrated WiFi. Nov 14,2013
I own a z77 mpower which has integrated WI-FI. I can tell you that for that board at least, I wasn't happy with the wifi and used an PCI card until I ended up running a Ethernet cable. I wouldn't call the wifi adaptor terrible, but it wasn't as good as a top end pcie card.
Hope this helps. -
Default MSI Z87-G45 Lan/Usb Help needed.
Hello,
So yesterday i massively upgraded my pc with the following components:
MSI Z87-G45
Intel Core i5-4670K
GeForce GTX 780 3GB (Classified)
and kept my old Ram (Gskill ripjaw ddr3 3x4gb) ,Hd's PSU. and i am using windows 8.1
The main problems i am having are as follows:
1. I am unable to get the usb ports to recognize most things i plug in. This included a USB flash drive and a wireless network stick.
2. I am unable to install any Lan items from the mobo factory disc. The option to install the LAN drivers are greyed out on the disc menu, and when i search for them they will not install. Now i've found them online and downloaded them to a Usb Drive, but i can't use that because the USB drive won't be recognized by windows.
Any help on these issues would be so greatly appreciated, i am getting terribly frustrated and don't know what to do.
I have checked the Bios and it appears to be current, i have also reset the Mobo battery at the request of MSI.have you done a new fresh OS installation after mainboard change?

Msi z87-g45 gaming, no display, no beep.
I am building a gaming computer. When i turn on my computer the cpu fan spins quickly then immediately slows down to a slow spinning state. My Boost audio light is on as well. But i get no display. I have tried the DVI HDMI and VGA outputs. I also accidentally pressed the cmos button while the compute was on. I also removed my mobo battery for 5 mins. Oh and on top of all that i dont have my standoffs. So maybe the board is short circuiting. But if that was the case my is my cpu fan remaining on as well as my boost audio light?
Here are my specs:
Ultra 550w ATX Power Supply
2 DDR3 in slots 2 and 4
Cpu with no bent pins (that i can tell)
Thanks for your help.Im having exactly the same problem did you manage to get it working in the end?
The board has been tested by aria computing and came back fine they have also replaced the RAM and CPU incase they were the problem. Il list all the things Iv tried so far. Thing that gets me is there is no beep when I turn it on so something is wrong and im banging my head against the wall not being able to figure it out.
Checked both power connections many many times
Check for shorts
Changed power supply
Changed RAM (and tested in all configerations)
Tested 3 monitors on all ports (onboard DVI, VGA and HDMI)
Put 3 GPU's in it as well and tested all ports on them
Tested on a low end CPU
Tried out of case with just power leads and a monitor connected (no HD,USB,frount audio)
Reset COSMOS and checked the battery
Here are the specs

MSI Z87-G45 Gaming not entering setup or boot menu
Please someone help, I am getting no setup or boot menu, case & CPU fans come on, drives come on, led's come on, but blank screen.
I took out the graphic card & ram sticks, pulled the plug for leds & case fans, took all cables off HDD's, now only cpu & one stick of ram in dimm 2 connected + power switch.
plugged vga cable direct in MB, blank screen, then plugged cable in MB HDMI, blank screen.
tested monitor, ram & power supply in my sons computer which is a x58 LGA1366, all worked well.
I have no means of testing motherboard or cpu.
specs:
MB: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
CPU: i5-4670k
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 1866MHz 9-9-9-27 1.5v
PSU: Corsair CS650M
I also tried another PSU a Thermaltake AP850W
P.S.
I have reset all i.e. pulled plug, taken battery out, pressed reset & shorted the two reset pins next to battery.newer board are different they need at least a CPU to even show a code as they use that to activate the BIOS and if they do not have that it will FAIL to post anything as the board is used as a backbone as nearly all the important stuff is on the CPU itself (Processor, IMC, SATA controller, Network Controller, VRM (on Haswell), GPU and many other things) so it will fail to post as before it was only a processor but now there more of a system on chip really and has most of the important stuff that used to be on the Board itself so without that the Motherboard is just an electrical plane with impressively limited connections as all the good stuff is now on the Processor that you do not have!
There is not much that you can tell till you at least get that CPU as the board has nothing to work with as there is nothing to process the signals from the BIOS so its just a useless item so shows nothing. -

MSI Z87-G45 doesn't boot, doesn't beep
Hi guys,
I just received my new MSI Z87-G45 and put it in my pc with my Intel Core i5-4670K
When I first tried to boot, nothing happened, except the fans and the hard disk. It doesn't beep and I see no screen. I switched the RAM, removed the graphics card, removed the hd, nothing worked.
Just the fans are going on, but nothing else happens.
I had a look at the cpu socket and wasn't sure if it is how it is supposed to look like (my first intel board) so I attached a picture. The pins look kind of weird, not sure about them:
Any ideas what I could try? Thanks for your replies.
I did a CMOS several times (everytime after removing a component) - didn't change anything.
I just wasn't sure if it's generally normal, that the pins are not straight upwards like on amd cpus. But I already saw on some other pictures that that seems to be normal. The pins are all equally and none of them is at another height level. So that doesn't seem to ba a problem.
Board: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
Bios: Stock (not sure which one that is)
VGA: HIS AMD Radeon R9 280X IceQ X² Turbo Boost Clock 3GB GDDR5
PSU: Enermax Revolution X't ERX530AWT
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K Box, LGA1150
MEM: Corsair XMS3 CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 (also checked with Kingston KVR1333D3N9/2G
HDD: none
OC: -
OS: none (old was win7, but I don't even get to the BIOS)
I also noticed that the case fan doesn't seem to get power. It doesn't move.
I have a speaker installed to the motherboard. My old board always beeped.
Thanks again for your help! -
So for the past 2 months I've been looking for an answer for this little problem of mine, I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong but anyways here's the problem: I just built a new PC, nothing super fancy but it is my first PC build. The first mobo I used was the ASUS A55BM-K and a one 4gb stick of RAM. I grounded my self and started building, CPU, MOBO, GPU, PSU, etc. Then I turned it on, the lights flashed and fans began to spin, but no display on my monitor. Everywhere I checked suggested many things which I did then I did last resort and figured I burned out my mobo or RAM, so I purchased the MSI Z87-G45 gaming mobo and 2x2gb GSkill sticks of RAM. Connected everything and no avail. Please can someone help?
ok you have missed some helpful information we could use to see if something is wrong like your parts list >>Posting Guide<< and be specific as it will help us work it out!
is the computer in the case or outside the case (always suggest that people try the parts outside the case on a non conductive surface (untreated wood or cardboard) to rule out a short under the board coming from the case<--- I do that every build so I can make sure if everything is ok before putting it in a case as its a pain if something is defective and you have to rip it all back out again)? -
I recently built a new pc in November and haven't had a problem with it until now. It doesn't post doesn't beep and won't boot as well. No display and it does this very thing with nothing plugged in at all (obviously the psu is plugged in).
My specs:
Msi z87 g45 gaming
I5-4670k (not over clocked yet)
Gtx 660
Corsair vengeance 2x4 gb ram
60 gb Kingston SSD
Evga supernova nex750b psu
The problem started yesterday when I had removed all of my components to route my psu cables.
After getting everything installed correctly I plugged it in and hit the power button and it came on for a second and turned back off I thought I had forgotten to plug the 8 pin cpu power in until it turned on a second later and immediately turn off. I quickly killed the power and had a look inside but nothing appeared to be wrong.
Now every time I turn it on it sits there turning on and off until I unplug it.
I've tried switching the ram the psu and reseating the cpu several times and nothing works.
I did manage to get it to stay on by shorting a jumper labeled "J1" but there's no display or anything other then the fans and LEDs being on.
Anyone know what could cause this? Everything is brand new and has only been running for a month and was running two days ago.I have tried clearing CMOS by the button the battery and the jumper.
The only bios setting that I changed was to set my ram to run at 1600mhz which is what it's rated for (it was running at 1333 on the auto setting)
The thing that puzzles me is that J1 jumper that is right next to dim 1.
If I hold a screwdriver to it during the power cycling thing it stays on as long as it's being shorted but I don't get a display or anything everything is on and spinning but it doesn't boot. As soon as I take it off it reverts back to the cycle of on and off.
I've searched google for any possible incompatibilities or fixes but I couldn't find any.
Also something I forgot, I accidentally bent one of my usb 3.0 pins to the point where it touched another pin. Could this have caused my problem? If so rma wouldn't work cause I bent a pin. I'm totally fine with buying a new board but I'm not sure if it's the board or some other component.
