Sorry, didn't realise it wasn't preferred to keep feedback over a similar issue in the same thread.
I seem to have solved this now at this 4.4GHz OC by slackening the memory timings to 11-11-11-24 Command Rate set to Auto and 1.565v DRAM Voltage.
Still appears to be a problem though when raising the OC to 4.7GHz as fails Prime 95 blend testing even with the RAM set to auto settings (1600MHz), whereas the CPU appears stable according to Prime 95 small ffs.

  • Z77A-GD65 Intermittent Power Up Issue

    Ever since I've had this board, it's been problomatic getting it to start at times. Most of the time it starts just fine, other times the fans just barely spin and it fails to start. Repeatedly pressing the start button usually gets it going after maybe a dozen rapid pressings (think Morse Code).
    I've tried jumping the pins on the header on the board, no difference. I've tried pressing the power button on the board, no difference.
    Sometimes, however, repeatedly pressing the power button does not get it to start. These times I have to disconnect the power cord and wait for the power button on the board to go out, usually takes 30 seconds or so for the board to totally discharge. Now it will power up right away, I have the BIOS set to power up after a power loss.
    Of course I've tried the usual things like one stick of RAM only in Slot 2, different sticks of RAM, only one GPU, no GPU, check for shorts to the case, properly seated CPU, etc. But as it is an intermittent issue, it'll seem fine for a while then go right back to not starting, then start right up the next time without any issues. It will always start with a CLEAR CMOS, but that is not a very handy method of booting the computer.
    The system is very stable after it is running, which leads me to think the individual components are not faulty. It never has any problem establishing a restart, only a cold boot. The HEX readout is always A0 when it's running, it's never had any problem booting up after it establishes power.

    OC has no effect, it's been doing this since long before I even attempted to OC anything. It's a fairly random issue. I could, for example, take the OC out and maybe it'd boot issue free for a number of tries, I'd think the issue was resolved. Then, without changing anything, it'll go back to doing it. I had this happen when I read that RAM slot 2 was determined to be the primary slot. I loaded one stick of RAM into slot 2 and got several clean starts. I was convinced I had resolved the issue, only to have it fail on the next attempt.
    One thing, time appears to be an issue. I can play around with it in the evening, make multiple cold boots no problem. Then it won't start up in the morning. Or maybe it will start up in the morning, but not at lunch. Or not in the evening. But if it's just a couple or a few minutes, it'll start. And restart.

    I have the exact same problem as you: I have the same motherboard and the same BIOS version (although I had the same problem before updating, and nothing is overclocked). I RMA:ed my first motherboard and received a new one from my supplier, but the problem persists. I've bought a new PSU and tried replacing every component with ones I know for a fact are 100% OK.
    The computer still boot loops. Once (and if) I somehow manage to get it to POST, the system is as stable as could be. I've successfully run Prime95 and Memtest86 for hours without reboots or errors. Once the computer has successfully started it will an can both shut down and restart without any problems. However, it seems if I leave the computer off for a couple of hours, the problem reappears. I have no idea what's going on but it's starting to get quite irritating.
    I've already breadboarded the computer once to rule out short-circuits caused by the chassis. To me, it sounds like a BIOS update provided by MSI is in order...

      I too had this problem after I installed my custom WC loop. My PC would boot up for 5 seconds or so and then shut down and cycle this process. I moved my ram in all the slots and it didn't work and someone hinted that I try only 1 stick of ram. Well sure enough 1 stick of ram in DRAM1 booted the PC up just fine. I switched that stick for my other one, (2x4GB Mushkin 1333MHz Blackline) and it too worked fine. So as far as I know my ram sticks are good. Now mind you when I first got this PC months ago and built it both ram sticks and slots works in sync of each other just fine. After sitting torn apart for a few weeks as I was case modding, etc, the system started boot cycling. I've come to the conclusion that both ram sticks are good but that my board doesn't or stopped support dual ram. If I had more ram I would try it with all 4 slots but I only have the 2 sticks.
    When I boot with 1 stick I get post code A0.
    When I boot with 2 sticks in I get post code error 55. (Early Memory Initialization) *Not sure what they mean*
    I've tried CMOS reset, I have taken the battery out of the board and jumped the JP1 or w/e pins. I am about to flash bios and see about updated but now my windows is barfing so I have to reinstall that too. Grr!!!
    So!
    1. Try your ram with just one stick in slot DRIMM-1
    2. Call MSI and see about a replacement as I think your board may be bad too.

    It's not the mainboard to have integrated graphics, it's the cpu. The Core i5-3570K has Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated. The mainboard only offers the output connectors to use it. All current generation Intel cpus have integrated graphics which can be used or not. The HD Graphics 4000 is not meant for gaming of course and would perform worse than your GTX9800 in a 3d game. With a supported mainboard (like the Z77A-GD65) the integrated graphics can be used along the discrete vga for Lucid MVP to better performance and gaming experience (see for more details: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=160519.0).

    I have just built my new Ivy Bridge Machine:
    MSI Z77A GD65 (BIOS V10.5)
    i5 3570K
    16GB Samsung Green Memory DDR3 PC3-12800 30nm (4x4GB)
    There has been a lot of forum chatter regarding the Samsung Green memory and its incredible overclocking potential. Unfortunately the MSI Z77A GD65 fails to POST at anything above the default 1600MHz. I have tried different RAM timings and increasing the voltage to 1.65V, but nothing got my system to POST.
    After doing some forum digging I discovered I am not alone, with other GD65 users having exactly the same problem.
    As a result this feels like a BIOS issue with V10.5. Can anyone help?

    This is most definitely not the case with Ivy! There are noticeable real-world improvements - if there weren't, I wouldn't be so fussed.
    Gigabyte have recognised the similar (same) issue they're suffering with Z77 boards... it's now been a month since anyone replied to me on this issue.
    Asus/ASRock do not have this issue - so it's not related to Z77 or the RAM.

  • Z77A-GD65 SATA Hot Swap Issue

    Hi folks, hoping someone can help with this.
    I have attached a 2-port rear eSATA bracket to my Z77A-GD65.  When I connect and power up an external drive to either of these ports, W7 recognises the drive just fine, but it does not appear in the "safely remove hardware" menu, nor is it ejectable by right-clicking the drive's icon in Windows Explorer.
    I initially connected the bracket to chipset SATA ports 4 & 6, with the "hot plug" feature for these ports set to "enabled".
    Intel Rapid Storage drivers are installed and the main system drive is RAID0 (2x256GB SSDs) in 6GB/s SATA ports 1 & 2.
    What I have tried so far:
    - Update the motherboard BIOS (v10.0 to v10.5)
    - Disable write caching on the drive in question
    - Use a different drive (in an eSATA caddy)
    - Connect the bracket to the ASmedia controller (SATA ports 7 & 8) in AHCI mode, instead of the Intel controller
    So far nothing has made the drives show up in the "safely remove hardware" menu.
    Any ideas?

    For anyone interested, I found the solution.
    Connect and power on external HD
    Go to my computer
    Right-click the external HD icon
    Click properties
    Select "Hardware" tab
    Click on the entry for your external HD
    Click properties
    If not logged in as admin, there is a button in the "General" tab that says "Change Settings" - click it and and dismiss any UAC message
    Go to the "Policies" tab
    Select "Quick removal" option
    Drive now appears in "safely remove hardware" menu and is ejectable from Explorer right click etc.

    Thanks for all the suggestions, really appreciate it.
    I think I must have been updating my signature when you viewed the post if it wasn't showing up. I am getting by on integrated graphics for the time being so could I OC that a little too?  The memory is Samsung Green DDR3 2 x 4GB but I've not re OC'd it yet whilst trying to ensure the CPU OC is stable first.
    I found an old screenshot from my OC on BIOS v10.5 where I had the Spread Spectrum disabled so I think that has been the main thing causing instability this time around at achieving 4.4GHz on BIOS v10.6.  I've not used the Enhanced Turbo before so am not sure what that does, am coming from a very old non msi motherboard that used an Intel 440GX chipset.  Is the Enhanced Turbo the feature that OC's just the one core?  I've implemented some of these changes that I've highlighted in green and been running P95 for around 4 hours without any bsod, or threads in error.  CPU-Z mainly shows a core voltage of 1.176 or 1.184 and my temps on the hottest cores have maxed at 60c.  Will it be possible to go any higher than 4.4 but still retain the power saving of throttling back to 1.6GHz on idle?

    I've tried all ports, and changing to a different USB connectors on the motherboard.
    I do have Security Essentials installed, and it's not an virus issue.
    Also I just recalled that during the installation of Windows 7 Pro the keyboard and mouse was also stuttering a bit.
    This was after I've cleaned the HDD and so did a full clean install.
    I've tried using the MSI LiveUpdate tool to update all my drivers, but no luck there either.
    As I mentioned, never had this problem before and after having this issue for 2 days now I notice that it almost looks like the keyboard and mouse are "reconnecting". Both mouse and keyboard light flashes for a second, and then it works but happends again randomly.
    Just weird that the other devices aren't affected, like my 4G modem that I use for internet. No problems there.
    ... But when I'm in BIOS there is no problem whatsoever with the keyboard and mouse.

    That mobo supports that cpu with the following bios:
    Xeon Ivy Bridge E3-1245V2 100 3.40 1M 8M E1 77 7751vA5.zip
    So more than likely you will need a supported cpu to flash to that version for it to work.
    If this is for gaming, there are better choices for the cpu though.

     Back in the days of much slower RAM and single channel (before DDR) it was usually no problem mixing different RAM sizes, brands etc. as long as they had similar specs otherwise. At the high speeds modern RAM runs in 2, 3 and 4 channel they are much less forgiving and can cause many problems when miss-matched RAM is used. The fact is over time even though model, part number remains the same manufacturers change chip suppliers for various reasons (price, availability, etc.) so you can't even be assured to get the same if purchasing same model at different times unless you get lucky enough to get 2nd set RAM from the same lot number as the 1st set.

  • Z77A-GD65-Gaming Killer LAN issues

    I just changed my motherboard to one that has the Qualcomm Killer E2200 chipset. However, with my existing Gigabit network (RT-N66U), I am only getting speeds of 100Mbps.
    I have checked all relevant settings, reinstalled drivers, etc., even tried a Ubuntu Live CD, but the speed I'm always getting is 100Mbps.
    I have tried 3 CAT5e cables including those short ones but I still can't get Gigabit speeds... I even purchased 2 CAT6 and CAT6e cables thinking it may solve the problem, but no.
    The cables work fine at Gigabit speed from my laptop.
    This is especially troubling for me since I have a NAS and now my speeds are only 10MB/s :(
    Any idea what could be wrong? I have already tried the troubleshooting thread and removed the suite, etc. etc.

    Here's a summary of what I've done (though they are all unsuccessful):
    - Removed my sound card and graphics card just in case
    - Installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 on another partition to rule out any driver issues
    - Installed just the INF without the driver suite on this fresh copy
    - Tried CAT6a, CAT6, and CAT5e cables of various lengths
    - Tried different BIOS versions
    - Tried to clean the contacts on the LAN port by using a cotton bud and small amt of alcohol (of course, the computer was turned off and the port was dried before I turned it on again)
    I noticed two things:
    - When I plug one end to my RT-N66U router and the other to the onboard LAN, no light lights up for about 10s. Then, the green (100mbps) LED lights and the orange (activity) LED blinks.
    - When I plug one end to my Samsung Series 5 laptop and the other to the onboard LAN, the red (1Gbps) LED lights up for a split second. Windows shows that a network cable is connected. Then, after the split second it will disconnect and there will be no more lights. After ten seconds, the green (100mbps) LED lights up instead together with the blinking orange (activity) LED.
    When I plug my Series 5 laptop to the router, or the Series 5 laptop to my dad's laptop, 1Gbps works fine.

  • Z77a-gd65-new build- od issue

    So I am having currently an on-going issue that is frustrating me, when I boot from off condition, it will go through it routine of checking everything than it pops up "reboot and select proper boot device" I have so far done this
    Check to ensure board isn't grounded at case,
    Check settings- boot option 1 is set to intel volume 1 (raided hdd's) option 2 is the asus dvd-rom all others are disabled. No fast boot
    Check all cables etc
    bios is 10.11 and it came shipped with that bios
    Now when I enter bios and tell it to save and reboot it loads windows fine, but not from being completely off 
    It does recognize the raided volumes it just doesn't decide to load it ?
    Ram is set correctly. I have went over again and again the setting but I don't get it.
    OS is windows 7 pro
    any ideas would be greatly appreciated , when it does get to window I have no issues what-so-ever it runs fast stable, I can play BF4 while oc'd to 4.1 on ultra @60-70 FPS it just is the boot up IDK,  sure I can hit f11 all the time and select it there but its not suppose to be that way.

    UPDATE 
    Well i wanted to post an update on my new build issue.
    Here are my specs:
    I bought a MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard with BIOS v10.8
    - Intel Core i7-2600 CPU 3.4 Ghz
    - BIOS Version E4451IMS V10.8 (i had a issue with the newest BIOS flash v10.11 it wouldn't detect the harddrive, could figure that one out so i went back to v10.8)
    - Balistix Sport 8GB sticks (Total of 32 GB memory installed) I first had 3 sticks so i got another 8GB stick to fill all 4 banks for total of 32 GB
    - Corsair Professional Series 860 Watt Digital ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Platinum Power Supply AX860i (Bought this PS to replace the Kentek PS)
    - N780 TF 3GD5/OC (GeForce GTX 780 GAMING) (traded Geforce GTX 780 card for the MSI version of the GTX 780 card)
    OK... I got the new Corsair 860w power supply installed and i installed the new MSI GTX 780 video card with the specs above everything installed fine no problems and my son was playing the Bio Shock Infinite game on Steam and about 1 hour into the game he got a blue screen of death, says something like "to prevent damage windows is now resetting" and it turns off so fast can't read the rest of the message.
    I'm going to here in a little bit and update all device drivers with MSI Live update utility and also update the motherboard BIOS again to v10.11.
    I'm really confused here, I'm also going to take out some memory and try to run it with sticks only in slot 2 & 4 to see if it runs more stable like that, also should i update the video card to the latest driver, i know the latest is not always the greatest driver.
    I want to think you guys again for your help & time with this issue. I really dont know what else to do here, everything is new in this PC.

  • Z77A-GD65 power issue/bad system board?

    Looking for advice. I am afraid its a bad board, but some symptoms point at power which also makes no sense.
    This is what the WHOLE system should look like.
    MSI Z77A-GD65 system board
    Intel 3770K 3.5Ghz
    Anted Kuhler H20 620
    G.Skills RipJaws 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3 F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL (on the test list)
    Asus nVidia GTX 680 video card
    OCX Vertex 3 256MB SSD
    Seagate 500GB data drive
    Razer Lycosa Keyboard
    Razer DeathAdder Mouse
    Antec Sonata IV case with Neo ECO 620W power supply
    It seems to me that 620W should be more than enough. According to my calculations thats roughly 330W of power draw against a 620W powersupply.
    I am not currently over clocking.
    So what the system does look like is:
    If I connect the 500GB drive then windows starts rebooting as soon as the Windows logo comes up.
    If I place all four sticks of RAM in the system windows starts rebooting as soon as the Windows logo comes up.
    If I leave the 500GB standard sata drive off and only use 3 sticks of RAM... well we get a solid system and I am writing this message on it.
    3 sticks of ram appear to work in any 3 slots and allow the system to boot, except 1,3,4. That combo also resulted in the reboots at the windows logo.
    I first thought it was RAM, originally I was using Corsair Vengeance. I saw some posts here about people having the same problem, and noted that the Corsiar RAM was not tested and switch to a the tested G.Skill instead.
    Any ideas? It does not completely seem like a System board issue, but it certainly should not be power. All heat levels are well within normal and as I said the system works great if I leave off the drive and one stick of RAM.

    System torn down, and put back together. (Found out I was out of Thrermal Compound, so I had to run to the store to get some.)
    No long leads, only 9 stand offs matching each mount point on the systemboard.
    Back together... problem is the exact same.
    However, back to the hard drive issue. I decided to play with that since I was getting no where with 4 sticks of RAM.
    What I have discovered is that with NO sata cable connecting the drive to the system board, if I try to power the two 250GB standard sata drives the system reboots just as the Windows logo should come up.
    The fact that this behavior is so close to the RAM behavior... I am back to thinking its a power issue, though system board is still a chance... its just easier to buy a new better power supply than the Antec Neo Power 620 that came with the case. (I have not ever had a problem with Antec before, and will likely just buy one of their higher end power supplies to replace it, but I think I will try it next, just in case.)
    I am not seeing any strange behavior power wise as far as any monitor shows... but connecting power to a sata drive that is NOT connected with a sata cable and causing a reboot just screams power at me.
    Anymore thoughts today. In the mean time off to play Secret World with just the SSD and two sticks of RAM, which still runs rock solid.
