Moved user - files missing - help please

My hard drive is about full so I installed a second, much bigger drive. I want to keep the small drive as the boot drive and use the new drive for data. So..... I moved the user files to the new drive. Now lots of file, most importantly some pictures, are missing. How do I tell the system where to look?
Thank You

I have not continued to use the computer at all. I shut it down when I discovered the problem and have been using a different computer to access these boards.
How did I end up with empty folders? I don't know, doesn't make sense to me. All I can tell you is what I did.
First I moved the entire user folder from the small drive to the large drive. Then I spot checked folders and files inside the user folder hierarchy on the large drive.
When everything appeard to be there, I deleted the user folder on the small drive and shut down the computer.
Later, I discovered the empty folders on the large drive.
So, after attempting data recovery, I probably will reinstall the system. That brings me to a whole new set of questions.
How do I change where Safari, or FireFox writes the cache?
How do I change where the OS X diskUtility save data in preparation to burn a disk?
How do I install the system so that the system files and possibly the applications and utilites are on the small drive, but all data files, including the user folders and all cacheing files, are on the large drive?
What data recovery and/or disk maintenance software do you recommend? ( I can't see the link you mentioned.)
I'm familiar with Unix, but forget it underlies OS X. Else I might not have tried to just move the user folder.
Thanks
Thanks

    I cannot load raw files from a Leica d-lux 6.  Aperture says it's an unsupported file.  How do I get it to be a supported file?  Help, please!

    What is your Aperture version? Here is the list of supported raw formats for Aperture 3, see: Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
    Your camera is not on the list. Use the software that came with your camera to convert your raw files to dng or tiff images; then you can import the images into Aperture and work with them, while waiting for Apple to release raw support for your camera. Or shoot raw+jpeg pairs and use the jpeg while you are waiting.
    Is Mac OS X (10.5.1) really your current operating system? Then you may need to upgrade, when Apple finally releases raw support for your camera. The newest raw support required Aperture 3.4. to be installed.

  • New SL install on SSD; moving user files over

    I installed a new SSD and now have a fresh SL install up and running. I'd like to use the SSD for applications, and the older "regular" hard drive (still in the box) for user files. What would be the easiest way to get rid of all the application and SL stuff on the older hard drive, leaving it strictly for my user files (music, video, docs, etc.)? Should I just wipe the drive clean and pull the stuff in from Time Machine? Or is there some other approach to use? Thanks.

    Michael Winner wrote:
    The info on the "test" symbolic link directory I've created on the SSD indicates that it's an alias. Is that OS X shorthand for the symbolic link, or could I have actually created an alias rather than an SL?
    If you are referring to the "get info" finder dialogue then yes - it calls links aliases, and also calls aliases aliases confusing if your trying to determine specifically which it is. I don't actually know how to create aliases from the cli - but ln is a generic nix tool so i doubt it would have been aded to that.
    Ideally the only non-symbolic link folder remaining on the SSD will be the library folder, correct?
    Within a user directory (like you said) yes - in my opinion, as the user library is more like an extended part of the system and apps than bulk user data. Some system and app performance will depend on the speed that files within the user library can be accessed.
    I'm not going to do any web publishing, so I can drop the Sites folder entirely, correct?
    I don't think there should be any harm in that - although the OS does default to that directory when enabling web sharing - not sure what the side effects of it not existing might be.
    Earlier in the thread it was recommended that I create one user account entirely on the SSD, so that I'll be able to log in if the HDD gives me trouble. Thoughts on this? I've cloned the current, pre-symbolic link install on the SSD, so that should work as a fallback, no?
    If the contents of a user directory are unreadable and even unwritable then the OS will still allow the user to log in - except it will get the default preferences. but in your case because you are keeping the Library on the SSD it wont matter if the HDD is there or not until you go and use the other directories... as all your preferences and caches etc are in your library.
    Since you've been so generous...guess I'll ask if you have any other advice for getting this setup "right" and taking maximum advantage of the SSD.
    There isn't much else to do that will make a vast amount of difference... The important thing is to remember is not to let it get filled up to much... try to keep it's default state as empty as possible. There are two reasons for this..
    Firstly wear levelling; it is only effective on the free space - if you fill up almost all of your SSD with static data and then use the last remaining space for temporary data storage then it will wear out that remaining capacity comparatively quickly (the wear levelling mechanism can juggle the nand page allocation for pages being re-written - but for the most part the pages holding the static data aren't going to get any use.)
    (take this with a pinch of salt - you can safely fill 3/4 of your drive and then use the remaining for temporary data, but it's healthy to keep in mind - only extreme cases are likely to wear out the drive very quickly)
    Secondly performance: This is to do with garbage collection and 'TRIM' - i wont get into the details here but as you may already know SSD performance degrades with use as data is mixed into pages - this is a reversible performance degradation but it is exacerbated by lack of free space.
    There are various articles and forum threads on the web to do with Mac OS tweaks for SSDs, but pretty much all of these are centred around increasing the life span of the SSD - or more specifically decreasing write amplification due to the number of writes opposed to quantity of data written.
    One quick tweak that makes absolute sense to do is enabling noatime … as with most unix file-systems HFS+ will write the access time of a file to the file-system every time a file is read - this means one write for every read (check your activity monitor to see this, you will always see a write operation when there is a read operation). access time isn't exactly of great use and there are no effects from disabling it… to do so you can use this launch daemon:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN"
    "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>Label</key>
    <string>com.noatime</string>
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>mount</string>
    <string>-vuwo</string>
    <string>noatime</string>
    <string>/</string>
    </array>
    <key>RunAtLoad</key>
    <true/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    What this does is add the noatime option as a default when the mount command is called for root
    You need to save this as a unicode file in your /Library/LaunchDaemons directory and change the owner ship and group to root:wheel… but i've written simple mini script to do it all for you, copy and paste this into your terminal then enter your password and it will write it to the correct place for you:
    echo '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN"
    "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>Label</key>
    <string>com.noatime</string>
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>mount</string>
    <string>-vuwo</string>
    <string>noatime</string>
    <string>/</string>
    </array>
    <key>RunAtLoad</key>
    <true/>
    </dict>
    </plist>' | sudo tee /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.noatime.plist
    sudo chown root:wheel /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.noatime.plist
    if you ever wanted to disable it for some reason simply delete the file "/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.noatime.plist"
    Other tweaks are mostly to do with creating ramdisks and moving certain system directories containing logs and temp files to them… however this is beyond the scope of a quick copy and paste script, you must understand specifically what you are doing so you can adjust the sizes of the ramdisks appropriately and make important files restorable (because ramdisks are volatile)
    Personally i don't think doing this is worth the effort, also if you don't have masses of RAM… or usually make use of all of it anyway then theres a good chance your ramdisk will be paged out to a swap file which kind of makes it pointless.
    Anyway - hope that helps, enjoy your SSD !

  • Moving user files from one server to another.

    Hi everyone
    I would need your help to help me migrate the user files of around 300 persons to a new server.
    Is there a tool that could help me doing that?
    Here is the situation:
    I have an old 2003 server with all the user accounts. We are using the shares to manage rights.
    We want to migrate all these accounts to a 2008 R2 server using NTFS rights.
    So:
    is there a tool that could:
    - copy the files and put NTFS right automatically with the username (%username%) as owner for each user personal folder.
    - change the path of the personal folder in each account in AD to the new server.
    - Make them automatically members of a specific group (We use that group to exclude these users from the old login script that would've map to old server instead.)
    is there anyone who could help me with this issue?
    Thank you very much!
    Dag

    Hi Dag,
    You can use robocopy to copy user files NTFS permissions from one server to another server and use /COPY:O to copy the owner information.
    For robocopy command, I would like to suggest you refer to the below article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc733145(v=ws.10).aspx
    Robocopy will not help copy Share permissions but only NTFS permissions. So if the drive letter will not be changed, you can backup and restore the Share permission with steps here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/125996
    Then you can refer to the article below to change the path of the personal folder in each account in AD:
    Change a user's home directory

  • User Settings Suddenly Missing - Help Please

    Greetings!
    I have an iMac G5 Rev B running 10.4.2. Yesterday, everything was running fine. I only did some Web surfing and e-mail, didn't install anything. I quit the open programs, logged out, then shut-down the system last night. This morning, it came up okay. I logged into my admin user account, the only account on this system, and noticed my wallpaper had been reset to the system default. Also, the dock was not as I had set it. I reset the wallpaper photo and dock settings, then started Mail. Mail came up as if it had not been run before, wanting to run through the set-up proceedure. I quit it, and began to wonder what had happened. I checked Dashboard, and it only had the default widgets installed, none of the others I've installed in the past.
    I've searched the forum, but haven't found a solution yet. I've run MacJanitor and have repaired disk permissions. I've restarted in Safe Mode, but still have the problem. I am not running File Vault. As far as I can tell, I have not changed the name of the home folder (I certainly didn't try to at any time). I only see my home folder and the Shared folder under Users.
    I've been using Macs for a few years now, but am still new to troubleshooting them. Not sure what to do. I'm of course hoping to recover my user account and data. I can see the iPhoto and iTunes libraries, but not sure I can see Mail's local mail file, or Safari's bookmarks.
    Any advice and guidance will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    To clarify a bit, I haven't opened iPhoto or iTunes, but can see the data files in Finder. The Mail and Safari data files seem to be missing. I opened Safari for the first time to respond to your post (originally posted my support query from my work PC), and as I suspected, my bookmarks are missing. It's as if I'm in a new user account. Very strange indeed! I'm hopeful the good folks here can help me resolve this problem and regain control of my user account and data.

    what can I do? i live in the UAE and haven't found anyone able to help me. i am in distress. music can be replaced, my iphoto album can not... i'm devastated.

    Lets say you have the following structure:
    - com/props/props.properties
    You can use any class inside the classloader that loaded this package to do the following:
    InputStrean in = <classname>.class.getResourceAsStream("/com/props/props.properties");
    Properties props = new Properties();
    props.load(in);
    Hope this can help you. Any doubts just ask!

    The message basically states that IE cannot load your stylesheet specified in the XML file.
    To fix this issue always use the TestStand tools menu item - "Package XML/HTML Files for Distribution" to 'pack' your XML reports before you try to use it in another computer.

  • IMovie wont accept .mov files. Help please.

    I have imported a bunch of movie files from my digital camera. They are now in IPhoto and everything is fine. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? All of the files i am trying to move into IMovie are .mov files. Shouldnt they work?
    Not necessarily. MOV is a generic file container -- not a compression format. It can hold any audio and video compression format combination compatible with the QT structure and currently installed QT components. (Even WMV content can be placed in an MOV container.) Unfortunately, iMovie '08 will only import files containing compression formats that it can edit "natively." Kodak digital cameras, for instance, tend to favor MPEG4/µ-Law compression. And, while the MPEG-4 video is compatible with iMovie '08, the µ-Law 2:1 audio compression is not. To import an MOV file, both audio and video compression must be compatible. In the case of the MPEG4/µ-Law file, only the audio format has to be converted to make the file compatible. One way to do this is to use GarageBand to access the "Movie to MPEG-4" export option and "Pass through" the video which converting the audio to AAC -- mono 64 kbps at 44.1 kHz will work here -- and place both in an MP4 container. Another method is to simply convert both audio and video to compatible formats using a converter of your choice.

  • ITunes 12 crashing on iMac - now music files missing - help!

    Hi
    I'm not tech-savvy so apologies in advance!  I installed iTunes 12 on my iMac (early 2008) running OSX 10.7.5, I previously had iTunes 11 and now find the new version crashed regularly.  However whne it did that again yesterday, on restarting a good 75-80% of my music files have disappeared.  Not good.  Can anyone help me work out where they have gone, and how to get them back?  Any assistance would be much appreciated.  I tried backing up to my previous iTunes library from a Time Machine backup but to no avail.  Help!!

    Hi
    Any help appreciated!  Thanks

  • Moved my library, need help please

    I had loaded my music folder into my iTunes library and everything worked fine. A week ago I bought an external hard drive and moved the folder from the internal hd to the external. What do I have to do so that iTunes recognizes the new songs and deletes the songs from the old location so I don't end up with duplicate songs? And when I sync my iPod, it can't find the songs because it's looking in the old location. Will I have to remake my playlist completely?

    This worked for me. In itunes click edit, click preferences, click advanced tab
    See what the file path is to your itunes music folder location. You can change it by clicking on change and then search for the folder on your new drive.

    This could be a problem of not having the iweb 1.1.1 update.
    Which do you have?
    Also if you have the latest 1.1.2 but didn't get the 1.1.1.....welll go back and get 1.1.1

    I have over 8000 photos in various albums in iPhoto 9.
    Some photos show up in multiple albums. I assume the various album pics are linked to the one actual picture file on the hard drive.
    If I export one album at a time to Elements, will It actually save multiple copies of the same file on the hard drive?
    Thanks for your help!
    Len

    iPhoto'09 allows you to import the albums/events selectively. However iPhoto'011 does not allow that from Elements Organizer.
    In iPhoto'09. if you have organized your photos without selecting the preference of copying files in iPhoto library during import, which means, your iPhoto library keeps the references of the images. In such case if you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, organizer does not create separate copies.
    But yeah in case of iPhoto'011, it does.
