  • Portege A100 PPA10A - Will BIOS update allow to boot from a USB device

    Hi,
I have an Old Portege A100, Model: PPA10A-0002LP, but I can't seem to find that model on any Toshiba website, closest I've seen is the " PPA10A-0002L".
I'm wanting to see if there's a BIOS update that will allow me to Boot from a USB Device.
The issue I am having is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cant read discs.
It does Network Booting PXE, but i'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutly no idea what to do there.
    Any help would be great,
    Thanks

    Hi
Portege A100 seems to be developed only for Australian market.
As you said there is a Portege A100 PPA10A-0002L model number listed on the Toshiba Australian page but the Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A.
So in my opinion the BIOS should work too.
Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add any further booting options.
Usually the BIOS support the booting from CD/DVD drive, HDD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a bootable diskette using an USB FDD drive.
I doubt you would be able to boot from USB ODD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

Unfortunately Lenovo laptops do not provide BIOS recovery functionality, either get the laptop in for warranty, or find a local computer repair shop that will reprogram your SOIC8 BIOS chip, they usually charge $40

  • Will BIOS update help wtih sound problem?

I have a problem getting sound working with linux on a 3000 (an N200 0769 in my case) that many other people have reported: sound only works with ACPI off.
I asked for help on the Mandriva forums and was told to check if there are any relevant BIOS updates. the readme for the latest BIOS does not list any changes to do with either sound or ACPI so it appears unlikely.
However, my BIOS reports itself (during bootup) as 2.03, and it appears to be 68ET31WW. This does not appear in the summary of changes in the readme which jumps from 1.02 to 2.02!
Does anyone know what has changed between 2.03/68ET31WW and the latest (3.03/68ET35WW)?

  • Will BIOS update solve "suspend" problem?

I have a 2014 X1 Carbon that I love. Best laptop I've ever owned. Except for one thing: "suspend" doesn't work. I have Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit installed. I've done some internet research and it seems that a BIOS update to version 1.13 might solve the problem with suspend. However, the instructions in the readme are all for Windows. See http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/gruj08uc.txt. How can I check what version of the BIOS I am running using Linux? Has anyone else run this update and 1) solved the suspend problem, or 2) encountered problems that bricked the laptop or somehow made things worse?

After a bad flash, you are not supposed to shut down the computer.  You did so there's nothing we can do about that now.  Best you can do is try bios recovery.  See thread below.   If it does not work you need a new bios chip.

As long as you have Java disabled in your browsers, as has been almost universally recommended by Apple and many others in this forum, it won't make any difference whatsoever.

This is where I downloaded the bios for my model
    http://us.msi.com/support/nb/GS60-Ghost..html#down-bios&Win8.1%2064
The bios lists the present version as E16H4IMS.103
New downloaded version is E16H2IMS.10E that returns the EFI_SECURITY_VIOLATION
That's because it isn't for your notebook. The first 8 characters dictate what notebook it is for. Your bios is E16H4IMS, the 'new' one is E16H2IMS, clearly indicating it's for a different notebook.

What does ME version show under BIOS currently? When you check the ratio under OS, do you put your system under loading? And did you re-install driver from website after updating BIOS?
    http://www.msi.com/support/mb/Z68AGD65_G3.html#support_download
ME version 8.1.2.1318. Even if I put the system at 100% load in Windows, the processor never moves past 3.4 GHz. I've checked this in multiple programs (CPUZ, RealTemp, TMonitor, etc.) And yes, I reinstalled the drivers that were listed under the BIOS update.

Go to OC section and change to advanced mode, change your CPU Ratio Mode from Dynamic to Fixed mode.
And go to windows checking the ratio have changed or not.
EDIT: sorry, I forgot this motherboard doesn't have this settings, try Disabled or Enable "Adjust CPU Ratio in OS"
I've tried changing that setting (Adjust CPU Ratio in OS) but it doesn't seem to have any effect.
However, I just noticed that I didn't have the newest version of CPUZ. I updated it and now it shows more detailed information for the multiplier: x34 (16-44)
So it is detecting that I have set it to 44 in Windows after all. But it seems to be indicating that it's using a dynamic CPU ratio of 16-44 - which I don't want, I want it fixed at 44 - but as you say, there's no option for dynamic/fixed on my motherboard. However, on the old v23.7 BIOS, if I set it to 44 it stayed at 44 always.
Even if it's using a dynamic ratio for some reason, it's not doing that right either because it's still never moving past 3.4 GHz (nor is it ever dropping below 3.4 GHz).

  • Help, can't overclock after bios update!

On the stock k9n2 750a bios version, my AMD 5400 OC’ed to a stable 3.08ghz without any hassle by simply setting the FSB to 220mhz .  Recently, I flashed to the AMI 7374 v3.5 bios and couldn’t even post after bumping the FSB to 202mhz  (it’s fine @200mhz).  So, I reverted the bios back to AMI 7374 v3.1 and for some reason it now can’t post either after saving a FSB above 200mhz .  As far as I can remember, I’m using the same settings as I used when I got the stable 220mhz FSB.
Anyone know what the bios update did to kill my overclocking or got some ideas/advice on how to get back to the stable 220mhz FSB? Thanks.

I can check these timings using AMD Overdrive 3.02 (AOD).  Performance control lets you play with lots of features in memory timing that are not in the BIOS.  I used it to tighten up on memory timings get memory benchmark >2900 consistently with AOD's benchmarking utility.  I did this at stock settings.
And the problem is there is a bug in the bios.  Least I think it is a bug.  The only time you get EPP limits on the values you can choose in the memory timings configuration screen of the bios is if you set the memory multiplier to 2.66:1, with or without EPP enabled.  Otherwise it puts JDAC 400(DRR2 800) limits on the values.  I want to have the freedom to set my timings to EPP 533 limits(DDR2 1066) when I am using a memory multiplier less than 2.66:1, like 2:1 or 1.66:1, so I don't have to up the voltage to much to get a solid stability test.  I can get a good stability test with the DRAM Voltage set to 2.2, and memory is cheap enough I just might see how long they last like that, but I really want this bug in the bios fixed.  I am sure it is in all of the MSI boards that use ATI 790GX chips.
I have been trying to figure out is enabling EPP does anything except lock you into the EPP timings when you are at 2.66:1.  With EPP set to enabled I should be able to set my timings to CL=5, tRTC=5, tRP=5, tRAS=12-18, tRC=25-31, tWTR=3-5, tWR=8.  Having the freedom to set these to EPP limits at any memory multiplier is crucial to successful overclocking on the nb/ht reference clock.  How can we get MSI to make this a part of the next bios update?  Without this correction, I am limited to tRC=26, tWR=6, tWTR=3, these are the JDAC limits not the EPP limits.  We should see EPP limits if it is enabled.  Least that's what it says in the nearly not informative help side panel.

  • BIOS update, then will not boot from any drive

This old laptop, 3000 C200 8922 was acting very clunky when on wireless.
Downloaded Bios Version 63ET62WW and flashed it into the bios.
Now, even though I can get to the bios screen, and it shows the hard drive, DVD/CD drive, it will NOT boot from either.
It will also "see" a usb installed, but will not boot from it.
I have removed all power and cleared the CMOS several times and I still have nothing. Tried two different hdd's which have been in the machine and same results.
HELP!! I should have never messed with it......

    hi k4pew,
One rule after a BIOS update is to Load optimize deafults after updating.
Try that go inside BIOS Hit F9 to load defaults then F10 to Save and Exit.
    If not
Try turning on the computer and start hitting F1 to load the Recovery Menu and see if that will push then Try Reseting the PC.
If still the same Im afraid that the BIOS needs to be reflashed.
Im not aware of any flash tool or a your Previous BIOS Version Firmware available for download.
You can try calling Lenovo Technical Support for any options available for repair.
Im sorry to hear what happened
    Regards
