Moved XP partition with Winclone - now getting hal.dll corrupted

I recently did an overhaul of my hdd setup and moved, using winclone, my Win XP partition to a different drive. Since then I get the error:
Windows cannot start because the following file is corrupted:
<Windows> \ System32 \ hal.dll
Please reinstall a copy of the previous files.
I've seen that this may happen when Parallels is also installed, but I don't use that.
I tried repairing boot.ini using [these Microsoft instrux|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184], which were recommended in [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5840341]. Windows Recovery Console finds the current Windows installation. And when scanning for more installations using bootcfg /rebuild, I am permitted to add the one that is found using the Microsoft instructions (actually, there are no other than the original one but presumably the Recovery Console finds the re-located installation). But upon reboot, the error returns.
Any thoughts?

Hi Stefan and danke schön for the quick reply.
Windows has to be on the last of the first 4 partitions).
I used FAT32 when I installed using Bootcamp. I also used FAT32 on the new partition onto which I put my clone of Win XP using Winclone.
I don't think I resized. The new partition onto which I cloned back Win XP is 22.9 GB according to Disk Utility, which is also what Winclone reports that the clone is in total when "unpacked".
On the drive where the XP partition now resides there are three partitions:
Mac boot drive
Win XP
Mac (scratch disk - easy to delete)
So I guess the problem is that the Windows volume is not the last of the three and that I would have to switch the order of the last two partitions?
Thanks again for your help.

Tried to download an update last week. Failed message. Now get messageMSVCR80.dll missing. Advised to download new Itunes programme. Would this delete all my existing library and wish list? Any ideas

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

  • HAL.DLL corrupted ?

    Hello all,
I'm an old Microsoft user (since it started in fact), but decided to buy a MacBook Pro 17" (why not configured as follow:
    100GB Leopard 15.5.5 (french version)
100GB Windows XP SP2 (french version)
Wile i was using my MacBook under Leopard operating system, i needed to check a file into the Windows partition.
I closed Leopard, and started Windows.
I had the usual first plain screen and recieved the following message (translated, sorry !):
*Windows cannot start because the following file is corrupted:*
    *<Windows> \ System32 \ hal.dll*
*Please reinstall a copy of the previous files.*
    As simple as that, but...
I tried with the original Windiws CD : NO REACTION
I tried with the original Leopard CD : NO REACTION
I tried several BOOT disquettes : NO REACTION
So far, i believe the system WAS ready to start for Windows, but encourtered a problem at the BOOT.INI file.
That's, probably, the reason why i cannot start the system using an externe file.
I'm affraid i have to dismantle the HDD from the MacBook Pro, and use it as an auxiliairy disk into a "clean" Windows computer and install a "hal.dll" original file copied from an other Windows XP computer. .
Except... is someone can help me to find a simpler procedure...?
    Thanks anyway for your comments,
    Regards,
    Jean

If you run into this problem, you have to start the Windows install again. To get going, hard power off your computer by holding down the power button. Then, holding down the mouse button and the alt/option button, power it back on.
Holding down the mouse button will eject your CD/DVD
Holding down the alt/option button will bring you to the boot menu - from there you can select to boot to OS X.
I have no idea how to solve the error...that's what i'm searching for.

  • Hal.dll corrupted error on startup

    Hi there.
    I recently had rather a nasty bout of spywere problems. after tryign Norton anti-spywere, i have the following problem;
On startup, i get the toshibas splash screen, and then the error message :
Windows cannot find the file: hal.dll
it may be corrupted. please re-install the file
i have the solution to this (from the microsoft tech-support site) but the laptop (an R 10-101) has no floppy drive, and i have no setup disk, so i cannot get a recovery console to fix things.
Is it possible to get a setup disk without buying another copy of windows, or is it possible to get a boot CDrom as oppose to a Floppy Disk?
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi
HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) is an operating system programming layer that enables the operating system to operate with a hardware device.
The missing or cannot find hal.dll, \windows\system32\hal.dll, or \winnt\system32\hal.dll error message may be experienced on a Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP system when the boot.ini becomes corrupted or when a user is attempting to dual boot a computer.
The easiest way to solve the issue is to recover the OS because the boot.ini will be new created.
But you can also check this sites how to solve the problem.
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_h.htm
    http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000490.htm
Furthermore on this site you can find a description how to built a own bootable Windows CD-Rom.

  • Can't create Windows partition with BootCamp

When I try to create Windows partition with BootCamp I get the same error, no matter what size the partition is set to : "This disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" and then keeps giving instructions about formatting the disk as a single partition (after performing a full backup I assume), and then try using BootCamp again.
Does that mean I have to erase and reinstall OS X to be able to do that ? Cause I just did that and I have the same problem. I'm not reinstalling again, it took me an entire day to reinstall all my softwares and run all the updates... Plus it reminds me too much of my Windows days... I'm not supposed to do that on a Mac anyway
Back to the topic... are there any services that need to be stopped during partitioning ? Any software installed that could prevent that ?
What could cause this problem ?

Weird thing is I had no trouble making a partition using BootCamp before I restored OS X, and I had the same softwares installed... or maybe I did that before I installed some of them... Could this be related to any software I have installed ?
And judging by your suggestions I would say that the "iDefrag" option is the only way out of the two to make this work. Sounds a little extreme if you ask me... What happens on the first attempt of creating the partition that would make me choose backing up and/or defragmenting ? ... You don't have to answer that if it's too complicated...
Same thing happened on my other MBP... so as far as I'm concerned, I can only restore one more time and try to make the partition right after first startup. If that fails, then it means it could have been software related... Or maybe restore again, install one more software/utility I use and try partitioning again... and again, and again, until it fails...that way I'll know what caused it...
    Just kidding...
Thank you for the suggestions anyway !

  • 2 bootcamp partitions with the same win 7 software?

    I'm running Lion 10.7.2 on a Mac Pro 4,1 (early 2009).
So my bootcamp partition with Windows 7 works fine, but I am running out of disk space. I'd like to move it to a dedicated drive that's already installed. I tried to image the partition with Winclone, but I was not able to restore the image to this other drive with Winclone (latest version that is supposed to be compatible with Lion, ver 2.3.2?).
It seems, I need to start over and reinstall bootcamp/win 7 onto my other drive. But, I don't want to simply erase my original bootcamp partion before I do that. Will I be able to use bootcamp assistant to install the same Windows 7 software onto a new bootcamp drive, while still keeping the original bootcamp/win 7 partition?
    thanks

{{Still, it's too bad I still have to nuke my working bootcamp partition??before I do any of this. Maybe if I unmount the partition is disk utility?}} You have to make image before nuke.
A windows image backup is not bootable, it is a very long string of data = to your C: drive GBs.
After doing image from within Windows 7 to Internal "Work" disk, in Windows 7 Bootcamp control panel, change startup to OSX.  You reboot into OSX & I thought you could run bootcamp against existing Windows 7 reducing it to 0. Reboot to OSX & do bootcamp space allocation setup to "New" disk, then Bootcamp would ask for Windows CD/DVD; rebooting with F8 where Windows Recovery/Restore/Advanced WhatchaMaCallit image from Work could be restored to "New" bootcamped disk exactly as it was before you zeroed it.
You want to press F8 because it will otherwise go into Windows install where I can't remember but do not think it will let you do image restore.
I expect even if you have problems after allocating new, you can boot with Option key selecting Windows 7 CD/DVD and F8.
This would not take long on internal drives.

  • Disk Error, Hal.dll Error, No bootable device error - Every other error.

    Hi,
I've been trying for ages to install xp using bootcamp. I have windows xp sp1, which i've slipstreamed to create an SP2 version. I also have access to the family backups of every OS we've ever bought, including a mix cd of windows xp MCE, XP home, XP professional - all SP2.
I moved to the mac a year or so ago - I've installed windows more times than I've rolled out of bed in the morning.
I had it working back when I was running Tiger - I upgraded to leopard - decided I wanted to try a reinstall of windows, formatted the drive and followed all the steps to install.
The main issue is that when I insert the windows install CD - it never gives me a chance to format the disk. I tried installing parallels and using that to boot up XP, and it does give me an chance - but after that install is finished I get the Hal.dll error.
I removed the bootcamp drive but after installing refit - it still shows up on the boot menu. Somehow, my HDD's GUID partition table & MBR for the windows partition is messed up.
At the end of the day - I've tried everything I can think of to install windows. And it just won't go. It used to work - what's changed? Any suggestions?
    Cheers in advance.

I too had problems with Hal.dll and "Disk Error".
Installing XP on my Mac Mini with 10.5.1 Leopard (fresh install on a new HDD), I got the Hal.dll error (my 2nd time with this lovely error, the first being on a iMac with Leopard). According to Billbear from this thread:
    http://forum.onmac.net/showthread.php?t=2793&page=5
You will get Hal.dll when you try to install XP on a partition that isn't the last partition on the disk. I tried this solution, and it worked for me. I previously had:
    1) Leopard
    2) XP
    3) User partition
    And changed it to:
    1) User partition
    2) Leopard
    3) XP
Next, however, I got a different error -- the dreaded "Disk Error". I tried the Apple support solution (formatting as NTFS instead of converting from FAT to NTFS), but I got the same error. I read somewhere (can't remember which thread, since I looked at so many) that you might get the problem if XP wasn't installing on C: drive. So I changed my partitioning from
    1) User partition (FAT)
    2) Leopard (HFS+)
    3) XP (FAT)
    To:
    1) User partition (HFS+)
    2) Leopard (HFS+)
    3) XP (FAT)
The installer saw the XP partition as C: and was able to install smoothly (Quick reformatting to NTFS). I then used Disk Utility to change the User partition from HFS+ to FAT, and everything works fine!

  • "disk error" or "hal.dll' missing

I kept getting "hal.dll" missing after the initial dos-style XP install, and googling about led me to believe it was because I was deleting the boot camp partition during xp setup and re-formatting as NTFS.
So I tried just selecting the BOOTCAMP partition as is, and now the error is different - it simply says "disk error" at XP boot up.
Note this is BEFORE the actual XP install, this is the restart after the initial XP copying files setup bit.

I also got "disk error" message when I first installed XP WITHOUT formatting the Windows partition. After I formatted it everything works fine.
I also got "hal.dll" error when I created 2 partitions on Windows BUT formatted only the partition that I installed the XP on. I believe the error was because that unformatted partition. I haven't tried formatting both partition yet, though.
Have any of you tried nerowolfe's advice? Did it work?

  • I moved the project files and now I can't get them back into iMovie 11

I was working on a project but I ran out of disk space before I could finish it. Now, for this very purpose, I have an external hard drive with plenty of space on it. So I tried moving the folder with all my project files onto the external hd, and now iMovie can't find my project anymore. With iMovie '06 it was as simple as hitting "save as" and saving the project to the external hd, but I guess that's not complicated enough for the new version. Now I can't get into my project. I even try clicking on the actual project file, and it goes to iMovie as if the project was about to open, but nothing happens. So I fear I wasted a lot of time working on that project only to have to start all over because I ran out of disk space.
Someone please tell me there's a way to get the project files open again. Thanks

that is a simple one and should be a routine after purchasing a new drive (in a Mac-only environment!):
    • on your Mac, Apps/Utilities you'll find Disk 'Utility'
    • on the left lane, you'll notice your connected hard drive(s)
    • select it, click on the 'erase' tab
    • NOTE: FORMATTING A DRIVE MEANS ERASING ALL CONTENT ON THAT DRIVE!
that's why you should do it as step#1 after purchasing a new drive

    Enlarging a volume
If you have multiple volumes on a disk and one is running out of space, you may be able to enlarge it
without losing any of its data.
To enlarge a volume, you must delete the volume that comes after it on the disk, and then move the
volume’s end point into the freed space. You can’t enlarge the last volume on a disk. You can see the
order of the volumes in Disk Utility by selecting the disk, clicking Partition, and looking at the Volume
    Scheme list.
All data on the deleted volume will be erased. Be sure to back up your disk’s data before you begin.
    To enlarge a volume:
From the list at the left, select the disk that contains the volume you want to enlarge, and then click
    Partition.
In the Volume Scheme list, select the volume beneath the volume you want to enlarge, and then click
    Delete〔-〕.
The volume is immediately erased, leaving the space it formerly occupied available.
    Resize the volume.
You can drag the divider at the bottom of the volume in the Volume Scheme list, or you can select the
volume, and then enter a value in the Size field.
If the enlarged volume doesn’t use all the space from the deleted volume, you can create new volumes
    in the unused space.
To create a new volume, click Add〔+〕, select the new volume, and choose its name, format, and size.
    Click Apply.
Disk Utility enlarges the volume and creates any new volumes.

The last update turned on iCloud. How do I get my calendar to sync with outlook now?

iCloud wasn't on, I accepted iTunes offer to upgrade to 6.1.1.
Next time I went to sync through iTunes, iCloud was on.
Your advice appears to have solved my problem...for now.
    Thank you.
Historically, the upgrade to 6.0 lost all of my contacts.
A manual restore brought them back.
Tech support said "Oh, that happens sometimes, you have to back up before upgrades", fortunately I do.

Not sure what you mean by "booted" from it.
If the Mac OS is installed on the external drive, then it's possible to start up from it, just as you do from your internal drive. Please open the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences, and verify that your internal drive is selected as the startup disk.
Assuming that's the case, then it may be that your TM settings have been corrupted. Turn off TM, then move or delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. Turn TM back on, recreate your settings, and try again.
