Movement in lid causes power off
Hey Guys
Got a strage one here. Sometimes when the lid is moved a little it causes the screen to go black and I assume power off. When I close the lid fully and then open nothing happens, and when pressing power button nothing happens either. After a minute of so it will come back on with power button. Its only intermittent and the lid is nowhere near closed when this happens. Any ideas? Im thinking a fault??

If this does not help, you may have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.

Syncing photos or movies causes power loss
Dear All,
I have an issue with a Toshiba Portege Laptop running Windows 7 syncing with iPad 2 or iPhone 4
When I sync photos or movies to the iOS device the Laptops lose power and switch off sudenly. I mean the Laptop lose power like the battery runs out or there is no A/C power connected. It happens with an iPad2 or iPhone 4 when the iTunes syncing has to load a greater amount of data to the iOS device.
Since it happens with either iOS device, I do believe it is a power issue with the Toshiba Laptop. The Laptop has two USB ports, but it makes no difference. It could be an issue with Windows 7 and the power scheme. The Laptop is running the 64 bit edition of Win7 and the 64bit edition of iTunes.
I was googling a bit and looked here in the forums, but couldn't find any related solution.
I'm thinking if it would make a difference to attach a USB powered hub with own A/C power.
I'm very grateful for any hint. The iPad is useless, when it doesn't sync photos or movies.

EdyOkay I have attached now an external powered (A/C Adapter) USB 2.0 hub. It didn't make any difference. The Laptops switched (lost power) during the optimation process of the photos to sync.
The Laptop is a Win7 64bit Toshiba with the 32bit iTunes. I noticed during the sync that the processes of the CPU are 100%. During photo optimation two processes are running of "ITunesphotoprocessor_32.exe*. I killed one process and the CPU usage went down and the sync with the iPad ran okay.
Question here: Why iTunes starts two process "iTunesphtoprocessor_32.exe*?
Obviously only one processor is enough.
Unfortunately when I sync movies, the Laptop lose power as well and only iTunes.exe processor is running. CPU usage is 100% again.
It's clear now that the Laptop is overheating during sync and the BIOS sends a command to switch off. It does bypass the Operating System.
I'm wondering, if iTunes 64bit would bring a change. I've read here and googled that the 64bit version has only some drivers in 64bit but not the core application.
Worth to mention here that the Tosbhiba laptops has no problem with any external hard (powered from USB port) drives copying a huge amount of data.

The round button that allows me to get out of an app or to move or delete an app has stopped working. Once I am in an app, the only way to get out of it is to power off my ipod completely. Help!

Particularly:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.

When waking from "sleep" the screen appears normal but, the pointer leaves a trail of grey as it moves and the whole screen will turn grey if I keep moving the pointer. The computer is effectively dead. Have to shut down by using power off for six seconds and then re-starting. I know little about computers!
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) -
T430s on AC -- Shutdown restarts, not shut down/power off
I have a T430s running Win7 Home Pro.
On battery power, when I click Start, Shutdown the system shuts down completely.
On AC power, with or without the battery installed, when I click Start, Shutdown the system goes through the usual shut down stuff but then the backlit keyboard, ThinkLight and speaker/mic mute buttons momentarily light up and the system restarts itself. This is different from a standard Restart in that the lights come on during the start sequence.
I've checked the obvious (at least to me) stuff, e.g.
1. Power Button Action in Taskbar Properties, Start Menu is set to Shutdown.
2. Control Panel, Power options, Change plan settings, Change Advanced settings, Power buttons and lid,...
3. Control Panel, Power options, Choose what the power buttons do...
4. I even found a registry key, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Start_PowerButtonAction
All of these are set to shut the system down. And yet the T430s restarts itself when shut down on AC power.
Any ideas on how to make Shutdown mean Shutdown and power off?

Go to Solution.I'm afraid this is probably no help for hausman, but I did manage to fix the problem on linux... The system would reboot instead of shutdown only when on battery (and only on Linux). I use Debian with the laptop-mode-tools package, which seems to be the trigger for the problem (the actual cause being some ACPI bug in the kernel, apparently). Until that gets fixed, this was my workaround (based on https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=133108). The solution is Debian-specific. It includes a solution for another problem (error messages about the intel gigabit module e1000e slowing down shutdown)
Create a file called shutdownfixes.sh in /etc/init.d, as root:

Hi all,
I have now for a couple of days Kernel Panics and auto power off of my iMac G5!
I have experienced KP in several occasions. Notably (can be reproduced) in iPhoto when I try to order prints online. The dialogue box pops up and then after 10 sec I have a KP!
Also some KP when viewing clips with Quicktime (wmv with Flip4Mac as well as plain mov files!).
Note that my software is up-to-date. I re-applied the combo Mac OSX 10.4.8 but that did not help.
I did reset the MPU and now I even have the iMac powering off (actually crashing badly).
For info, I have experienced KP at sleep mode since day 1! I rally fear an hardware issue.
Question: how can I trouble-shoot Kernel Panics?
PS: I have rebuilt the authorizations, no luck...

[Solved] Random Freezes Requiring Manual Power off
Since I built this system, I've been getting random freezes that force me to have to manually power off and back on the entire system. I have no idea what's causing it and I've tried everything under the sun that I can think of to resolve it to no avail. I posted about this a while back in another forum, but I'm hoping I'll have better luck here.
Symptoms:
Entire system will completely freeze. No input is recognized, keyboard controls do not function (numlock, caps lock, etc.), cannot switch to another TTY, nothing. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to when the freezes occur. Sometimes the machine will be sitting idle and freeze in the middle of the night and I'll come in in the morning and find it frozen, other times I'll be in the middle of using it and it will freeze (as just happened). Every time I have to hold down the power button to shut off, then turn it back on.
What I've tried so far:
Swapping out all the RAM
Completely wiping the entire system and re-installing from the ground up (twice now I've done this)
Unplugging various USB devices and seeing if leaving those unplugged helps (it does not).
I'm at my wits end. This has been going on for months and I have no idea what to do at this point. This is the most stumped I've ever been.
The thing that drives me the most nuts is that I have an almost *identical* system at home (the one that's freezing is my work computer). Same CPU, same motherboard, same SSD partitions and layout, virtually the exact same software installed as well. The only differences are a different GPU, different band of RAM, different brand of SSD, and a different case. The specs from my home computer are in my signature and I can provide exact hardware info on the work system if anyone thinks it'll help.
I'm willing to provide whatever information anyone can suggest to help troubleshoot the issue. I've got a bunch of log output from journalctl from various times it's crashed, but I haven't been able to make sense of it with regards to finding patterns or useful troubleshooting information. Below is the most recent log from a few minutes before and after the crash. You'll see the reboot at 17:51:40

May 07 17:54:22 workArchPC kernel: ohci_hcd: USBMy thinking is that Plasma is not "playing" nicely with nvidia, I have two systems in my pc, one with kde4 and the other one (my testing system) with plasma, kde4 runs as it should, no lags, no freezes, no redrawing problems, fast and smooth. My plasma system is really not there, I tweak both systems the same, 20-nvidia.config on the xorg.d folder created by the nvidia settings, same where I also tweak all settings to juice my video card to its fullest (a really weak one by the way, a fanless gt430) and the triple buffering enabled for kde. I do have freezes with Plasma that lock the whole system, no keyboard input, and its been more or less the same since its release (for me that is), I am keep waiting to see if the "next" release would do, 5.3 still not yet. I also notice that compositing effects makes things worst, for example, snapping a window to a corner or to maximize when wobbly effect is on is a sure shot for a freeze for my system, I just update today the linux kernel and the nvidia driver, would see if that helps a little. My advice, for a stable system stick to kde4 still.
Edit: Note, I have a good old amd phenom 6 cores and I always run it with some over-clocking, never have issues with that on my previous install or my main system.

Since purchase of my macmini (2011 model) I have been able to wake it from sleep by hitting the (wired) keyboard space bar.
However, I recently updated the OS to 10.7.4 using the combo (1.4Gb) update, since when I cannot wake the macmini in that way.
Now, after putting the macmini to sleep, pressing the spacebar causes it to shut down.
I then have to switch mains power off and on again at the wall socket, after which the macmini starts up from shutdown condition.
I am by no means an expert, and have not been fiddling with settings, so I am in need of advice on what could need resetting to allow me to return to the previous simple 'wake up' approach!

4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
Then if those do not fix the problem, you may need to reset your Energy Saver and Keyboard Preferences by readjusting them. -
I am having MacBook Pro 3 yrs old and today while I was watching some movie on it suddenly it got power off and when I am trying to start it, it's power button is not working even the round button on external left side is not showing battery lights. But when I connect it to chrger then Charger only gives green light and even the external round button only shown 4 green lights (if charger connected). I don't know what to do now

Problems solved: Fans blowing with no activity, machine is not booting, power button pressed and nothing happens, problems with indicators, Magsafe has wrong lights, battery is not charging, monitor and graphics issues etc. If the battery is not charged (from like letting it sleep too long), let the Mac charge up awhile afterwards.
Will not hurt the machine resetting if it's not broken.

Check battery status: Hold option/alt key down while clicking on the battery icon in the menu bar, top right corner.
Magsafe: Use the correct/matching power supply charger with your Mac, not a less powered one from another Mac.

I got the message that IOS 7 was ready to download. I wish I had read the reviews on it first. I had to move my photos and videos off the phone to free up memory space for the install. I was still able to see the phone with a file browser and grabbed the photos and videos and stored them in a directory on my hard drive. Meanwhile my itunes updated too. So with my files moved and deleted from the phone I made a backup of the phone. I installed the ios 7. When I synced the itunes moved my backup directories back to the phone. I can't figure out how to remove them from the phone. Under photos they have installed themselves with the names iphone09282013 and videos directories. When I access them I don't get a delete option. The trashcan is greyed out. The settings usage page no longer gives me the swipe delete function. How do I remove these files to free up space now that I have them saved to my computer?

Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

You are running into a problem that many users of the 24-inch, early 2009 iMac 9,1's have encountered (including me). The Sudden Shutdown Syndrome is the scourge of many iMacs and Mac Book Pros.
Unfortunately, I believe that the only solution is for Apple/nVidia to revisit their geForce Tesla drivers and figure out if the power management is correct.
In your case, I'd try this:
1) Boot up your computer in safe mode and log into your user account.
2) In the Finder menu, select Go > Go to Folder...
3) Type: " ~/Library/Caches" (without quotes) into the box and press return. You will be taken to the Caches folder.
4) Select all the files in the folder and move to the trash (do not trash the folder itself). At this point, just leave them in the trash...don't erase them.
5) Go back to the Finder menu, select Go > Go to Folder...
6) Type: "/Library/Caches" (without quotes) into the box and press return.
7) Do the same thing you did in 4) This time, though, you will be asked for an administrator's password.
8) Restart your computer in normal mode and attempt login.
9) If you can log to the desktop, you may delete your trash.
Hopefully this will get you into your account. If it doesn't, you may have to do a clean install of Yosemite, go back to Mavericks, or wait for an update.

Just got a Magic Trackpad. Downloaded the software update and everything is working great. I even read the manual.
The manual says how to power on - it talks about turning the trackpad off when not using it, but it doesn't say how to power it off. I'm asking because I'd like to carry it around when traveling and I don't want the battery drained when it's in my bag.
Anyone know how to turn the power off, other than removing the batteries?

I have been talking to tier two support and engineering all afternoon. Their recommendation fresh install of operating system on other partition update to 10.4 then reinstall trackpad, still downloading updates. Not very happy it works but it doesn't , it sees it but can not be programed to do what they say it will, may have to go back to my wacoom tablet, it does even more but takes up more room on desk, it the trackpad is better than unmagic mouse.

I have to use Assistive Touch on my phone because the power button does not work, how do I power off the phone completely when I use Assistive Touch?
Enable AssistiveTouch: Tap Settings, General, Accessibility, AssistiveTouch (near the bottom) and tap AssistiveTouch to ON.
You will now notice a small dark square with a circle in the middle (you can move this square anywhere). Tap the dark circle to open the AssistiveTouch menu, then tap Device and tap andhold the Lock Screen icon. This will bring up the iPhone's Power-Off slider - no need for a power button any longer!
Plug it into a power source, & it should turn on.
