Movie and video burning on the macs

Hi.  My daughter has an older 2008 MacBook 13" white.  In perfect shape, running perfectly on Snow Leopard.  IF we upgrade to Mountain Lion, will the iLife 08 with the iDVD still be there?  There is no iDVD with all newer mac systems.  No iDVD with iLife 11.  She loves that program despite the mac literate communities complaints with iDVD.
If NOT, then how does she burn videos from her iPhone to DVD and make home movies from the laptop?  What alternatives for NOVICE video creators are there on mac format?  iMovie let's you make a movie, but it is then "stuck" in the computer without iDVD...is that correct?  We do NOT use Facebook, HATE its ads, lack of security/privacy and too many "friends", and therefore will not be uploading the movies... so how do we get them onto a disc playable in a DVD player or computer drive for grandparents, and other out of state family members?
Thank you!

I can report that iDVD 7.1.2 work well with Mountain Lion; it does occasionally throw a fit when I want to throw out the default menu song and replace it with my own, but it eventually works. I recently did a clean install and started with iLife 08 (for a particular reason: I need iMovie 08 in order to install my iMovie HD 06 .dmg supplied by Apple). I tried both iMovie and iDVD and neither worked until after I installed iLife 09. So, I assume that iLife 08 will not work with Mountain Lion.
I maintain a bootable partition with Snow Leopard so I can use a couple of older apps; I would also keep that if iDVD would be no longer be working in a future OS update - I would simply shift my video work to the Snow Leopard partition for two reasons: I prefere using the old iMovie HD  06 because it was the only version that worked losslessly (no loss of quality of video) and because there is no reasonable consumer priced alternative to iDVD.
You can try Burn (free, I believe), but it does nothing but burn. there is also Roxio Toast (which I have and use as well); it offers a few menus, but no options to customize them - it is an excellent application though. There are others - free or not - you'd have to do some research to see if you like what they have.

  • Have OS 10.5.8.  New external HD require 10.6.  Can I use this?  Also, can a new HD be initially used on Windows7 to store movies and then used on the Mac without confusing the HD?

I have a Macbook Pro with OS 10.5.8.  I wish to get a new external HD.  The HD packaging seems to indicate that an OS of 10.6 is required.
    Questions:
1:  Can I reliably use a new external HD requiring 10.6 on my 10.5.8?
    2.  Does anything have to been changed/altered on either the HD or the laptop to make such a HD work?
    3.  The HD would initially be used to transfer movies from another external HD, via a PC with WIndows 7, onto the new HD.   This would be a one-time event simply to get movies from a friend's HD.  Will the new HD be affected in anyway with having its first contact with a PC rather than my Mac which it ultimately will be used with?
I am not a wizard with technology.
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

You need to upgrade OS X on your computer. The drive will have to properly formatted for a PC but be usable on a Mac. So the drive must be prepared as follows:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to MBR then click on the OK button. Set the format type to MSDOS. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later

Go to sounds in system pref and select outputs. When the hdmi cable is plug into the tv it will show as an option under output. Just select that option.

Have you downloaded everything that is on the camera? If so format the SD card on the camera (will erase everything on the card).
If you have not downloaded everything can you see stuff on the camera? If you have a card reader you could try putting the SD card in that and trying on the mini. If your mini has a SD card slot you could try that.
In any case format the card on the camera before taking more pics.
Next time be sure to eject the camera from the Mac properly and turn the camera off before disconnecting.
EDIT: You might also check the camera's USB Mode is set to PC.

  • Can my computer play movies and videos transferred to time capsule

can my computer play movies and videos transferred to time capsule

I use InFuse, an iPhone, iPad, App.
It can play the video on the iPhone or iPad.
I use it to play on the TV using AirPlay and AppleTV.
It does transcoding where needed. It uses screen mirroring for native formats such as mp4.
It can look up the movie and TV series database for information, plot description, rating, cover art etc.
For playing on the Mac just open the file in Quicktime.

Since I have installed Lion onto my iMac it's impossible to to copy any video file from the mac to an external support (ups-stick, Timecapsule). What's happened? What can I do?

If you just did upgrade Lion, give it some time. I recall having similar problems and some articles mention heavy background work after install - such as re-indexing for Spotlight etc. I couldn't even copy from folder to folder or e.g. iphoto to folder on the same disk. Went away after a day or two though.
I do however still have a problem with AFP access to one of the lion machines - kills it's network adaptors rather quickly. No luck solving this so far :|

  • Can you move a video taken on the iPad from the camera roll to 'Videos' without syncing through iPhoto?

Pretty simple question that I can not figure out the answer to. Can you move a video taken on the iPad from the camera roll to 'videos' on the go?

I can do it on my iPhone and, according to the iPad manual (p. 58), you can do it on an iPad.
Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • How to play DVD movie and video on Blackberry

This guide is mainly about how to rip DVD and convert video to BlackBerry Storm. First, you should know what video format is BlackBerry Storm supports.
Because DVD has CSS copyright protection, we need a program to rip DVD and convert video for BlackBerry Storm. The tool we use is BlackBerry Converter Suite, it includes two programs: DVD to BlackBerry Storm Converter and BlackBerry Storm Video Converter. This program not only supports BlackBerry Storm, but also BlackBerry Curve, BlackBerry Pearl and BlackBerry Bold series.
It supports audio and video format as follow:
Video: DVD, ISO, AVI, MPEG, MKV, MP4, MP4-AVC, M4V, WMV, MOV, 3GP, 3G2, MPG, FLV, ASF, VOB
    Audio: WMA, M4A, MP3, AAC, AC3, WMA
For more info about this BlackBerry Converter Suite, you can refer to here.
And here is the free download link, about 12.4 MB.
Now, let’s start the guide about converting DVD and Video to BlackBerry Storm.
Step1, Download and install the BlackBerry Storm converter, and then run it.
Step2. Load DVD into the software by clicking “Add DVD file”.
Here we can load three kinds of DVD's:
    1. Real DVD, just put the DVD in your DVD drive and click load DVD, (you can find it by clicking the triangle on the right of 'load file' button.)
    2. DVD ISO image, you can amount your ISO files in the daemon tools and then load the virtual DVD drive.
    3. A DVD folder, sometimes you may store the DVD folder in your hard drive, it appears like "Video_TS" "Audio_TS" folders. You can load it by clicking the "load DVD folders" button.
Step3. Select Profile, Subtitle, Audio, output directory setting
After you load DVD into the software, click the Profile drop-down list to select the proper format according to your BlackBerry Type, this guide is mainly about how to convert DVD and video to BlackBerry Storm, so we select the “BlackBerry Storm series(*.mp4)” profile.
Regular DVD movies usually have several subtitles such as English, French, German, etc. You can select one you prefer. You can also delete the subtitle by selecting “No Subtitle”. Selecting Audio is the same. If you want to join all your DVD files into one video file, please select the option named “Merge into one file”. For more advanced setting, you can open the setting panel by clicking “Setting”.
    Step4. Start the conversion
After all things done, you can click the “Start” to begin the conversion; it will take about 30 minutes for converting a regular two hours DVD movie. When the conversion finished, click “find target” to located the converted video on your computer, connect your BlackBerry Storm to computer, and then copy the video to your BlackBerry memory card, that’s all. Then you can enjoy your favorites DVD movies on your BlackBerry Storm.
For converting video to BlackBerry Storm, you can click “Video to BlackBerry” to run the BlackBerry Movie Converter, the operation steps are similar to DVD to BlackBerry Converter, So I’m not repeat here. But I want to add some tips to the BlackBerry Movie Converter.
    1. The Video to BlackBerry Converter supports batch conversion, so you can add multiple video files at one time.
    2. The Video to BlackBerry Converter embeds powerful video editing functions, you can use it to cut video, trim video, crop video, and you can even add a watermark to the video.
    3. The Video to BlackBerry Converter can also help you convert video file to MP3, WMA, AAC, etc audio, so you can set it as your BlackBerry ringtone.

STOP.....WHAT DOES "HOW TO CONVERT DVD MOVIE AND SET THEM ON THE IPOD" HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS DISCUSSION FORUM?
    This is very simple:
THe 5G IPOD is designed to seamsleslly play video acquired from the ITUNES music store. What does that mean? It means that if you get the video from the Itunes music store it should work, and if it does not work, you then post the relevant question in the ITUNES discussion forum.
If you want to rip DVD's, by all means, search in websites like www.videohelp.com, or search in google. If you do not find the answer there, then search here.
This particular question has been ASKED countless times and the last time I checked the forum was called Using Your 5th Generation IPOD", not "How do I get XYZ type video to play on the IPOD" nor "How do I use ABC program to rip, convert, a DVD"?
Have you checked first the video specs of the video ipod? What formats, codecs, etc? before posting your question here?
Don't get me wrong, we are here to help, but it is a little bit irritating to see newcomers post questions without having searched for the answers first, specially on a topic that has been addressed so many times as this one
