Movie attachments only play in portrait mode?

When I play an M4V movie from iTunes or even clicking on a M4V link in a URL, my iPhone will automatically default to landscape mode and play the movie. If I rotate the phone, it will switch to portrait mode.
When someone sends me an M4V as an email attachment, it will only play in portrait mode.
Is this a bug or are email attachments treated differently than other movies?

Did you check System Preferences > Displays (with the external display attached and mirroring off, look at the preference pane _on the external display_.

I recently obtained iphone 5s. I've recorded several videos with the phone, in landscape mode. When I try to play the videos connected to my tv via HDMI A/V cable the videos will only play back in portrait mode (quality is distorted and horrible).
Same goes for the videos recorded in landscape mode on my old 4s (which prior to IOS 7 would play back in proper mode).
Phone is not locked in portrait mode.
Video will play on phone in landscape mode...just won't play in landscape on the TV.

I had the same exact problem. Some of my landscape videos would get squashed into a portrait size view on the TV.
What I did as a workaround was to hold the phone in portrait mode, play the landscape video, and if it didn't fill the screen correctly, I would swipe the video as if I was going to another video/photo, but without lifting my thumb/finger, swipe it back so that it returns to the original position.
What happens is that the video on the TV screen should resize into a smaller landscape image (with the circle play button in the middle of the image). Then usually when I hit the play button again, it will play properly in landscape mode and, more or less, fill the screen properly.
I find it odd that so few others have faced this issue.

Emailed Video from 3GS only playing in portrait

I have been taking video in landscape mode on 3GS and then emailing video. The attached video only plays in portrait even though I filmed in landscape. How do I fix this?

Seeing the same problem here as well. Will shoot video in landscape (camera shutter button on the right in landscape view); and then either watching the video on the iPhone or after sending off the video, it plays in portrait and NOT landscape.
This is annoying when trying to watch a landscape video taken on the 3GS. If you turn the phone 90º to view it as you shot it, the video rotates on the iPhone. Turn it back to portrait, then it goes to landscape. Try to quickly compensate by rotating the iPhone now that it's in the view you want it, and it rotates to portrait again.
VERY annoying. Landscape videos can be watchable in "Edit" view (sometimes), but it just doesn't seem to be working right.

It all depends on the codec the file uses, Karli.
What model of camcorder is this video coming from?
Are you working on a Mac or a PC? Have you got the latest version of Quicktime, per the program requirements? When you started your project, did you select the settings for a DSLR at 720p? This is a vital step since it will activate the components your computer will need to work with many of these types of files.

You need to do the basic troubleshooting steps described in the User Guide, Appendix B.
Restart phone
Reset phone
Restore in iTunes using a backup
Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup
If restoring as new doesn't help, there is a hardware failure in the phone that needs evaluation by Apple.

Will MBP 17 play in portrait mode on my ext monitor?

Hi All,
Am wondering if my MacBookPro 17" (about 2 yrs old) will "play" in portrait mode on my ext monitor? Is it built in, or do I have to DL a utility, or what? I am a writer and it wld be nice to see a wholel page at a time, vs. wide, wide, wide.

Try Deleting it from your device, then download again from purchase history.

I would recommend deleting the affected movie from your iPad, and redownloading the movie.

What do you mean by "load" exactly?
Have you already placed the entire rental movie on your iPad? If you have not, and you're in airplane mode, then that would present a problem.

N8 HDMI only works in portrait mode, gets disconne...

Hi. Like the title states, my Nokia N8 HDMI works as expected in portrait mode but when I turn the phone sideways (like when I want to play Angry Birds) it immediately gets disconnected. Even the small "HDMI" logo in the top right corner disappears.
I initially thought it was because the connector was loose so I tried holding it firmly while turning the phone. Same results. Then I tried detach/reattach the cable in landscape mode - no response from the phone at all.
If I switch back to portrait mode the HDMI connection consistently and automatically gets restored without having to detach/reattach the cable.
Is this just a simple setting I need to change in the phone system, or is it a hardware defect? Any help you guys can provide will be very appreciated.

I don't have HDMI cable for my N8 but judging from a bot of googling i did, the thing should work for landscape HDMI. You may have a software problem of an issue with the accelerometer. Are you having issues with any other landscape apps?
You may have to get the phone re-flashed at a nokia care point.

My music videos now only play in verticle mode not landscape since ios7

I have an iphone 5 and since I downloaded ios7 I now can't watch any of my downloaded music videos in landscape mode. If I turn it then I get the album list of my entire Itunes library when in landscape. Any ideas?

I love being told that $500 dollars worth of videos can play one at a time and that in portrait mode they are an inch tall.

My old movies now only play the audio

My old movies that used to work just fine on my 60 GB Ipod are now only playing as audio files.
The problem started about a month ago, not sure why. Probably windows, lol. When i went to the video list all of a sudden EVERY song and video was being displayed as a video. However, the tracks that were truly videos were playing as audio only. So i went to video settings and made sure that it wasn't on tv out. The problem persists. So then i connected my ipod to my computer and under the ipod summary screen it says i have audio, photos, but no video. So i went to "get info" on the videos to see if they had changed into audio files but it still says under "summary" and then "kind" that it is a MPEG-4 video file. So then i tried playing it in itunes and IT WORKS FINE! I will mention again that all these videos were playing just fine before. What is going on!?!?

Go to edit-->preferences with the iPod showing up in iTunes and hit the iPod tab. Then hit the podcasts tab under the iPod. Make sure transfer all podcasts is bubbled. Now go to the videos tab and make sure transfer all videos is selected. Click okay.
See if they now appear

MOVIES WILL ONLY PLAY AS SONGS

my ipod keeps on only playing the movie files as music files. all my movie files are in the correct format to play on the ipod and they played fine for like a few weeks. then i noticed that all my movies were gone. they had all switched to audio files only.
is there any way to fix this without having to delete the files off the ipod and putting them back on? or having to search for them manually using another program?

the tv output is turned off. i am just trying to play them from the video menu. i put some other videos on today and they appear in the video menu and work fine but the other ones still don't work.

QT movies that only play part

Some movies I made play from the start (the trackhead goes to the end of the movie) but there is more I saved. In order to see any more I have to drag the trackhead back manually and click play again. Does this sound familiar to anyone ? Thanks

QT Kirk is pointing you to an application which has a "Fix Timecode breaks" option under the Edit menu. This feature can fix breaks in clips which have timecode breaks for one reason or another. Fixed files can then the saved using the "Save As..." File menu option. The QT player is very particular about such timecode breaks and will stop play when it reaches one or may "jump" the break if shuttling the playhead and get "stuck" in a different segment of the clip. Basically, the QT Player considers each unbroken timecode segment to be a separate movie.
