Movie clips greyed out.

I updated to 2011 and firstly could not see video clips in iPhoto. Downloaded 'Perrin' and i can now view them okay in iPhoto and in Quicktime. However, when i look in iMovie and try to import from iPhoto i am unable to import as many are greyed out.
Any help appreciated

Perian might make files viewable in player but it doesn't make them a format that's editable. Use MPEG Streamclip to convert to a editing format.

  • How do I import an existing finalised imovie into a new project either in part or full. The movie I want to import is filed under "movies" but greyed out when I go through the procedure in imovie 11

How do I import an existing finalised movie clip into  a new developing project ? I go through the imovie 11 procedure for importing and the list of clips (finalised and un-finalised) appears, but always "greyed out" which makes it impossible to create anything. I have tried placing it on the desk top and dragging but this doesn't work either.

AppleMan  Thanks very much for the information, however I could't make it work. I followed your instructions to the letter, in fact I tried every which-way. I created a dedicated file into which I copied and pasted the project from "package contents"  but it was still greyed out when I went to retrieve it. I also found that the file size was reduced to only a few Kb.  Any further step-by-step instructions would be appreciated as I am obviously doing something wrong.  Babowa  It appears that in imovie everything has to be "finalised" before it can be used or shared elsewhere in the same way as a disk has to be to be played elsewhere. Funnily enough an MOV file I converted to Mp4 was not greyed out and I was able to import it.... an exercise I am not keen on because of resolution loss during conversion

  • MOV format greyed out?

Hey. I have a school project Im working on, and I have a few MOV files i want to import to iMovie '09. The problem is, only several of them will actually import, and I have close to 100. Most are greyed out, and only three or four will actually import. Any suggestions?

IMovie will only import clips with codecs that it can edit. It is important to realize that MOV is a container, not a codec. It is possible to have clips within an MOV container that iMovie cannot edit.
Also, iMovie will not import files with closed captioning tracks, tween tracks, chapter tracks, and the like. If your MOV file contains one of these, it will not import.
In order to give you specific advice, pick one of the files that will not import, and open it using QuickTIme Player. Then click WINDOW/INSPECTOR on the top bar (or click Command-I). This should open the QuickTime Inspector. Then tell is what you see there, especially the dimensions and everything next to the word FORMAT:.

  • IMovie clips greyed out

I am making a short film on iMovie, and now, the clips down in the timeline are greyed out and completely invisible. I cannot select or drag the video or audio clips. I can still play what I have so far and it works fine, but I can't add or edit anything now. Please help, I'm in desperate need.

Okay, in case anyone else has the same problem I eventually worked it out. The clips were imported from an external drive which was formatted as case sensitive, whilst the drive the iMovie Events were being stored on was case INsensitive. Since I had files like "IMG01234.mov" and IMG01234.mov", iMovie apparently got confused (this is a clear bug BTW - iMovie should check for this).
In the end I trashed the original imports, split the imported movies into separate Events (the different naming conventions came from different devices, and so by luck were on different days) and it all works now. You could also move them into different directories by naming convention and import like that - the trick is they need to be in different Events in iMovie.
    Painful. Really, really painful.

  • Bought movies are greyed out

I have bought various movies and TV shows via my Apple TV. They automatically sync back to iTunes but are greyed out so I cannot view then or transfer them onto my phone. Any help would be appreciated as I am new to the Apple TV.

    Have they actually synced back?
I wonder if they might be still transferring and hence not available.
Can you Show the greyed out movie in a Finder window by right clicking on it?
Do you have another iTunes on another computer you could copy the file too and try it there?
You might also want to try deauthorising and reauthorising iTunes to see if that helps (turn AppleTV off while you do this in case it decides to wipe synced stuff).

  • Can't edit movie artwork (greyed out on Get Info tabs)

All I need to know is how to be able to add artwork to my movies that are being read form an external hard drive. When I press CMD+I for the get info window the option to even select the Artwork tab is greyed out and unavailabe. How do I get it to add artwork that I have found online?
I did not have this problem when itunes was reading the movies from my actual mac computer it only started when I made itunes read the movies from my external drive. I can still edit the artwork for the ones that are not on my external drive yet and are only on my actual mac computer. Why is this happeneing?

When you add a movie to iTunes you have to make sure it makes a copy of the file in the iTunes Media folder.  Otherwise, you can't edit any of the information on the movie or video.
In iTunes 12, go to Edit-->Preferences
In Preferences, go to Advanced and make sure the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library".
Unfortunately, you will now have to re-import the movie files into iTunes using "Add File To Library..." Once imported, the movie will sometimes appear under "Home Movies" instead of "Movies" but if you right click on the movie file it will list a menu item called "Get Info" where you can change the "Options" to "Movie". You should also be able to click the "Add Artwork" button.
    Hope that helps.

  • Clips greyed out

The clips in the clips pane keep greying out and can't be used. Is there a way to stop this happening or why it keeps happening? thanks

    Hi Pauline
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
    Many possible origins. Most common:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disc if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disc is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disc (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.3 - is OK

  • Movie clips are out of focus

I imported my movie from tape into Imovie 8. The clips are sharp and normal in the bottom screen. When I place the clips in the upper window to make the movie they are not as sharp as below. Kind of out of focus.
    TK

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • The audio in my movie clips drops out sporadically, How can I fix this?

I have a collaboration of video clips from a baseball game that I put together in iMovie 09. I added a background song to play over the clips, I have the (video) volume turned down for some of my videos so that you can hear the background music, but when I try to turn the (video) volume up to hear the cheering at the game over the music, there is no sound at all! If I pause the playback and resume it, I will hear the cheering in the video like I want.
Pausing then resuming to get my sounds to work correctly is tangible, but the real problem is that it cuts out when I am exporting to iTunes or YouTube as well.
    Please Help! Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Some times simply quitting any and all sound Apps (iTunes, QuickTime, any audio player) restarting often solves the problem.  An SMC reset might also work.
If the laptop went to sleep with headphones or external speakers plugged into the headphone jack loss of audio on wake can result. In future do not sleep with headphones or speakers attached.

  • Movie Clips Actions Get Out Of Synch With Audio

My movie is five about minutes long with audio and an offscreen timeline move clip containing action script to control other movie clips or play the root directory.   After about a minute or so, movie clips get out-of-synch with the audio, apparently its getting bogged down.
My swf file doesn't seem that big, about 2.2MB and my move clips aren't that complex, although up to three levels deep.
My version is Flash 8 Professional and my laptop was on the high end about 18 months ago.
Am I missing something or expecting too much from Flash?
    Thanks,
Mike (who seems to know enough to be dangerous)

  • Trying to access movie clip

I have a movie clip on Scene1 called "movieclip1." Inside "movieclip1" there is a label of "fadein," which underneath the label has the movie clip fadeing in. Then I have a label called "fadeout," which has the movie clip fading out.
What I want to do is get the coding or action script to make it so when I click on "portfolios_btn" (on scene1) it runs what is under my label "fadein" inside the movie clip "movieclip1."
Then, when I roll off the movie clip I want it to go and play whats under the "fadeout" label.
This "movieclip1" is a drop down menu that fades in when I click on the portfolios_btn and fades out when I roll off the movieclip.

    I have another issue.
    Here is the layout.
    Scene1 > movieclip1 > movieclip2
So i am in "movieclip2", which is inside "movieclip1."
    Inside movieclip2 I have "button1_btn."
What I want to happen is when I click on "button1_btn" I want it to play everything under label "label1," which is located on Scene1.
How do I reference this to play a label in Scene1?????

  • Hyperlinks to movie clip

    Hello!
I have a swf file which consists of 3 movie clips. When the
1st movie clip fades out, the 2nd one fades in. And the same for
the 3rd one. I want to insert 3 individual links to the 3 movie
clips so that when people click on the 1st movie, it links to page
A of my website and cliks on the 2nd movie links to page B and so
    on.
Can anyone advise how to do that?
    Thanks!
    Ken

Just to confirm your first question, yes, the clips are about 1gb for 5 minutes.
And depending on how you work and what else you have on your hard drive, you may not need a monster.
With iMovie4 and iDVD4, the largest movie you can make is just under 2 hours. That figures out to about 24gb. When you do the burn with iDVD, you also need a minimum of about 6gb free, much better to have 10-20 available.
But if you import several hours of video and select pieces here and there, the unused parts of the clips remain on your hard drive, so the 24gb can grow very quickly. There may be workarounds, again depending on how you edit your movie.
For example, most of my editing is linear -- I can completely finish one portion at a time. So I make those parts under 9 1/2 minutes, then export them to full DV chunks and either delete the iMovie or all the clips from the Timeline. I then move the chunks into the Media folder of a "master" iMovie project which may approach the 2 hour limit. A side benefit is, I can copy two of those chunks to a DVD-RW as backups.
p.s., never, ever, use the iMovie4 option to "empty the trash." No, no, no. It will gain you some space, but sooner or later it WILL completely corrupt your movie!

  • Greyed out .MOV HELP!

This isnt specifically FCPX, but I assume most people here have greater experience with media files.
I recently shot a 2 camera Biography interview and my final and most critical clip is greyed out in the "Finder" window.
I have tried other macs, dropping it from my external to desktop and playing it, but they all say that ".Mov is being used by OSX and cannot be opened". When I drop to desktop, it takes the time to transfer but then disappears after. I also cannot rename the file at all, no edits can be made in the inspector window.
This is a very critical clip, a 9 minute Master, and I would really prefer not having to go back and shoot it.

Looks like it was shot on DSLRs. Do you still have the cards or is this the only archive?
The modification dates look strange. The first two are Aug 17 and I'm guessing from the file names are a separate camera, which the date set differently from the other camera. The last file though has the same date as the camera with the first two shots. Do you know what's going on there? What was done to the file at 12:15am?
You might take a look at Digital Rebellion's Pro Media Tools and see if there's anything that can fix this.

  • When I try to import mov files into iMovie'08 (7.1.4) the files are greyed out. Any suggestions?

When I try to import mov files into iMovie '08 (7.1.4) the files are greyed out. Any suggestions?

Hi Appleman - thanks for your guidance.
OK RealTime Inspector: Dimensions of my clips - as I don't know which bit this is I will list everything under Inspector, including Format:
    00117
    00117
    33.30
    Format:MPEG-4 Video, 1280 x 720 millions
    AAC, 2channels, 44100Hz
    FPS29.97
    Data Size2.57GB
    Data Rate 10.20 Mbits/s
    Current size 1280 x 720 pixels (Actual)
And re the types of tracks you mention that iMovie '08 can't import, I don't much about film clips so haven't yet made sense of this, tho I do see that the clips are organised into chapters, so presumably this is 'chapter tracks'?
Thanks - I'll await your further instructions :-)
