Movie dimensions and duration on an Airport drive

I have many movies in mp4 or m4v format.
On my internal drive, the Finder indicates movie dimensions and duration.
I had an Airport drive on which the Finder indicated these values. It crashed, and I bought the same one.
Now, on the new one, dimensions and duration are not longer shown...
I don't understand why!

I tried many things this afternoon.
First, connect my network drive directly on my USB port. the .Spotlight directory has been rebuild very quickly, and I was able to search items and view information.
Then I reconnect it on my Airport Extreme. Dimensions disappeared.
I have "Ratatouille.m4v" on my Airport drive. I deactivated the index (mdutil -i off /Volumes/krypton), open a finder window and typed "rat". The movie was found. With the window still opened, I reactivated the index. Instantly the movie disappeared from the finder.
I've noticed another thing. First I thought it was only on movies, but it turns out that even JPEG dimensions are not available. And that's ********. It's really simple to show that kind of information, so why not? Cmd+i on a JPEG file or any media file from my network drive shows nothing! Even Windows can do that!
Anyway. It's a bit frustrating.
The only difference between my former network drive and the new one, is that I've bought the first one during late Tiger era.
And maybe Tiger did something on the drive Snow can't.

  • How do you move itunes and iphoto to an extrernal drive, and have them still recognized on the computer

How do you move itunes and iphoto to an extrernal drive, and have them still recognized on the computer.

Step 1 - copy the relevant folders to your external drive.
For iTunes, that would be yourusername/Music/iTunes (and everything underneath it, exactly as is).
For iPhoto that would be yourusername/Pictures/iPhoto Library
Step 2 - next time you start iTunes (and iPhoto) hold down the Option key while you click the application icon.  You will get a question box that will allow you to point iTunes (and iPhoto) to the new location on your external drive.
Step 3 - after verifying that everything is working correctly with the libraries on your external drive, delete them from your internal drive.  Be sure to empty the trash.
As always, it is best practice to always have a backup copy of your data ... just in case something goes wrong.

  • How do i move photos and catalog to a new drive and have lightroom make the same move

I am trying to move all my photos to a new drive with different drive letter.  I know I can do a backup and restore inside PSE13 to perform that.  However, I also have Lightroom 5 on the current setup.  How would I now use the new location for the photos in lightroom if they are already moved by PSE?
    Hope this makes sense!

I don't recommend the Time Machine or Migation Assistent approach. The first tneds to be very slow and the second often carries baggage that is probably best not transferred to a new computer.
Lightroom doesn't use activation, therefore, can be installed on your new Mac without having first removed it fom the old. Your images and catalogs can be copied across to the new Mac using an a portable disk drive as the transfer medium. Typically, on Mac computers, the catalog and image files are stored in the Pictures folder. If this is where you have them then then copy them to the same location on the new Mac. Once copied you can open the catalog folder then double click on the .lrcat file to launch Lightroom.

  • Is it possible to have two hard drives connected to my airport extreme and use one to store my itunes library/iphoto and the other to backup via time machine?  Will the second (larger) drive back-up both my mac HD and my other external airport drive?

For the past year I've been using an external hard drive (HD1) connected to my airport extreme as the back-up location for time machine.  This has worked fine without any issues.  What I would like to do now is to move my itunes and iphoto libraries off of my laptop (space constraints) and store them on a second external hard drive (HD2) connected to the airport extreme.  I have successfully connected the second hard drive using a Belkin powered USB hub.  What I am wondering is if I direct my time machine back-ups to HD1 will it back-up both my mac HD as well as HD2?  I apologize if this has already been answered but i've read conflicting responses on various message boards and a number of responses were dated so I wanted to make sure I received the latest information.
    thank you

That may be true, but you need to know that backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.  Do not be surprised if those backups suddenly turn up corrupted.
What I am wondering is if I direct my time machine back-ups to HD1 will it back-up both my mac HD as well as HD2?
No.  Time Machine cannot back up from any network location.  The 3rd-party utilities CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.

  • Can I move /library and/applications to a hard drive thusfreeing up space on my ssd?

I am trying to set up my new Mac Pro. The SSD is small (120Gb) I have plenty of hard drive space, I know how to redirect the user folder. Can I move the other lager foders?

    RE: Redirecting Caches:
There are some tools in the Server Administration Tools (Workgroup Manager) that can accommodate automatic "Folder Redirection" of the ~/Library/Caches folder to another location at login, such as /tmp/yourname/Library/Caches/ by default.
This assumes you are running the appropriate version of WorkGroup Manager. You simply run the appropriate version of WorkGroup Manager directly on your Mac instead of on the Server:
    The Managed Client.app Preference Manifest
One of the most powerful portions of the Details setup in Leopard [and later] is hidden by default. This is the preference manifest set built into the Managed Client application itself. The Managed Client application resides in /System/Library/CoreServices and contains the code used to run the entire MCX process. The compositor is also located here, along with the code to run mobile accounts, portable home directories, and much more. The MCX team built a very large preference manifest list in here that is continually being refined and revised.
The manifest is made visible by going into Details, selecting the /System/Library/ CoreServices/ManagedClient.app, and adding it to the set. The items show up as bold, gray items compared to the italicized items you already have. Some of the imports ask to replace ones you have already entered, such as Desktop. That’s okay; the values you have already entered won’t be disturbed. You will, however, be able to streamline some of your settings. Here’s a walkthrough of the manifest items offered by the Managed Client application:
    Folder Redirection
This setting will help take some of the performance load off network home directory users. It is designed to force the current user’s Cache folder into /tmp on the local computer. When you must use network home accounts, this can mean a huge reduction in network traffic. More information is included in “User Accounts—MAs, PHDs, and More.”
To set this up, you open the setting to edit, select the Always domain, and add a new key. Choose Login Redirections from the pop-up menu. Now select that new subkey. Click to turn down the disclosure triangle, and add a new key to that key. This subkey will be called Redirect Action Info. When you open that key, you’ll see that the defaults are already filled in for you:
    The default Login Redirections item
The other actions are Logout Redirection and Other Redirections. One key point here is that you cannot create a redirection to force the user’s home, or a subfolder, to an upstream or network location. These redirections take place before any mount points are available, so the redirection would fail.

  • How to move iTunes and Library to External Hard Drive

Is it possible to move the program and its contents to an external hard drive? The external can hold much more and it would be easier to bog down my external hard drive every so often than try to keep iTunes and its contents on my Mac.

For instance would it all work if I simply dragged the "iTunes" application to my external?
    Yes providing you use
    Consolidating Your iTunes library
and allow iTunes to Manage your music.
Once you are positive that the External is working to your Satisfaction you can Delete your iTunes Library off your computer.
Leaving the iTunes Application / Program installed on your computer...
To Operate iTunes from the External Drive...
Start iTunes with the Option key held down and Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external drive.
On Windows, hold Shift, launch iTunes and select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external drive.

  • LR and PS housed on D drive

Can I move LR and PS to my D:drive where there is plenty of space as apposed to my C:drive? And how?

I am not answering about PS, as I don't know. for sure, but I doubt that PS cares what drive your photos are located on.
You can move your photos that have been imported into Lightroom to any drive via this procedure: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders
If that doesn't free up enough space, then you can also move your Lightroom catalog file (and associated previews) to any other drive simply by moving them using your operating system, then double-clicking on your catalog file. However please be aware that your catalog will likely run slower on an external drive; the usual advice is to put your catalog file on your fastest drive (which is usually your C: drive)

  • How can I move my 31K photos to a standalone drive in folders and then import them back to edit and then perhaps return them to iphoto and library to produce slide shows

I want to move my photos into folders, which reflect the contents of iphoto events , to a standalone hard drive. Subsequently I intend to return them a few at a time to edit in Elements. Once  they are edited I may return groups to iphoto to organize into slide shows. As things stand now, my iMac drive is rapidly filling  up. I do not use raw files so I want to move Jpegs and edit them.
    David

I'm with Léonie. That's a very (and unnecessarily) complicated plan you have there. As Léonie says you can just set Elements as an external editor.
    To move a Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done?

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

External hard drive connected to my airport extreme will no longer open, when navigating to it in Finder, the Finder window quits and reopens, cannot access hard drive, it is visible in airport utility, since the problem began I have updated firmware on Extreme as well as both of my Airport Expresses. Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

  • I was trying to move my itunes to an external hard drive and I have now lost all music not purchased with itunes

I was trying to move my music to an external hard drive but now I have lost all music that was not purchased with itunes. I never hit delete so its still somewhere on my imac. How do I find it?

Do a Spotlight search or do a logical search along folders that make sense such as looking in the music folder first.  Moving a library correctly should not result in any loss, and I can't think of any way to move a library and lost just a select grouping of files.  How were you trying to effect this?
