Movie file disappeared

Please help. I recently exported a Quicktime movie file from Final Cut Studio 2 into my Western Digital My Book, but when I opened Final Cut today, the file was gone! I can still access the Quicktime movie version from the external hard drive, but the file as it existed in Final Cut has disappeared. Where could it have gone? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I don't know what happened, but I restored a previous version and the file was there. Just thought I'd share the info.

  • Movie file "disappeared" while muxing

Here's a weird one: I was using tsMuxer to remove audio tracks from a large (22GB) .M2TS video file. At the end of the successful muxing, I realized I had left the output field blank, and I hadn't given the file a name (.m2ts extension), or even a save location.
I know the video file went somewhere, because I had 115GB on my internal drive before the muxing and I now have 95GB, but I absolutely can't find it. I've used Finder to search by File Size (greater than 10GB) or date modified (today) and I get no results. I've also emptied the trash.
How can I find this rogue file that's gobbling up valuable HD space?

To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.

  • Chapters disappear after saving movie file

I have added chapters to my movie file using the instructions here:
    http://images.apple.com/quicktime/pdf/QuickTime7UserGuide.pdf

but when I save my movie file, the chapters and the text file that supported the chapters disappear!
_Could anyone please let me know how to save the chapters into the movie file?_
    Thanks!

Be sure to check the console window .. this won't be an error message that pops up .. maybe you already know that, but just wanted to make sure.
I'll have to test this in FM10. I use (and make) DITA-FMx where this works fine, but will test it in default FM-DITA and see if there's a problem. Do you have the latest FM10 patches installed? I do recall some issues with table conrefs in early FM10, but think they were fixed later .. the current version is 10.0.2.419.
    ... testing ...
OK, just tested it and sure enough, it doesn't seem to work .. conreffing either rows or cells .. it works when you insert it, but doesn't resolve when opened. The data is still valid, but it just doesn't render in FM. When I open the files I created in FM10 (default DITA support) with DITA-FMx, the conrefs show up just fine. If you really need table conrefs, it might just be a good reason to buy DITA-FMx ..

  • Disappearing Movie Files

I made a movie in iMovie a few months ago but didn't have time to burn it onto a dvd when I finished. I went back to it a few days ago to burn it, but the movie files will not play. You can still see the movie in the timeline section but there are little yellow triangles with exclamation marks in the corners of each clip. When I try to play the movie, the music is all you hear, and the screen is black. Does anyone know how I can get the movie back with out all starting over again? Thanks.

    Hello Rpc30,
There are a couple of options I have that should remedy your situation.
The first would be to delete and re-download the items that have an exclamation mark, then redownload them from the iTunes store.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
The other option would be to search for the missing movies manually.

  • Delete partially copied movie file from iPhone. Shows grayed out in Videos on the iPhone but it doesn't show up in iTunes.

    Hello.
I have synced my iPhone 4S with iTunes and I got an error while copying one movie. Now this movie shows up grayed out in videos on the iPhone but NOT in iTunes. Hence, I cannot delete this partially copied movie from my iPhone. And since it is grayed out, the right-to-left swipe does not work. I have resynced with "no movies" option so that every movie would be deleted and indeed every movie was deleted except for the problematic one. I rebooted the iPhone several times in case it was a glitch. No success. I even tried tools like iExplorer and DiskAid but I cannot find this **** file. Is there any way to delete this partially copied file from the iPhone without having to restore it?
    Regards,
    HawkeyeQ

    Hi adtsalmon,
You can only watch the movie on the device you rented it on. Here's a snippet from the Apple Support site (italics mine):
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.
Here's the link to the Movie Rentals FAQs site FYI:

    Hope this helps!

  • Files disappear when creating a new folder

I'm new to mac....got a macbook this week. I'm in Iraq so I have very limited access to anything. No internet for my mac at the moment...so I can't update even if there are ones. I assume I have the currenct version of everything though. The question...
While switching over my files I decided to reorganize them. I'm working on my external HD and creating many new folders for all my files. On numerous occasions now (4) I have created a new file the standard way...right click>new>file...then named it. On these occasions I have done this it has renamed the previous file I had worked in (even though it was not selected) and then the contents of the file disappeared. This leaves me with the new file I created and another identical file of the same name...now with nothing in it. Some of my files I have backed up, but the last one deleted many videos that I didn't. Happens randomly at no particular time. If I select the file and view its contents often it will briefly change its name back to the original name, but still nothing in it. Then next selection of anything will switch it back. Have not been able to fine the files anywhere. Tired of losing my files. Any ideas??? Thanks.

Hi Craig and Welcome to Apple Discussions....
First of all, thank you for all you are doing. It's so appreciated! Just be safe and come home soon.
Now... I have a feeling your external hard drive is the culprit. Read here:
    Changing the names of items
You can easily change the name of a file, folder, or disk on your computer.
IMPORTANT: To avoid problems using Mac OS X or applications on your computer, don't move or change the names of folders that came with your system (such as the Library folder or your home). You should also not change the names of applications or items associated with specific applications. If you accidentally change the name of an installed item and you experience problems, you can change the name back.
Locate the item you want to rename on your desktop or in a Finder window.
Click the item to select it, then click the name. The name is highlighted and you will be able to edit it.
Type the new name and press Return.
Some document names have a file extension, such as ".txt" or ".jpg." If you change the name of a file and delete the extension, some applications may no longer recognize the file. To ensure the file can be recognized by the application that created it, change only the part of the name that comes before the extension, or open the file using the appropriate application, then save the file with a new name.
You cannot change the name of an item in the Finder window's sidebar. You must locate the item on your desktop or in a Finder window to highlight and change the name.
    And more here:
Getting information about files and folders
You can view and modify information about files, applications, and volumes in the Info window. This information can include:
Comments that Spotlight can search on
Who can view and modify the item.
The applications that can open it.
Metadata that describes a file's contents and how it was created. For example, a photo's Info window may contain the picture's dimensions, exposure time, and the make and model of the camera.
To see information for one or more items, select the items and choose File > Get Info. An Info window opens for each selected item.
To see a summary of information about several items, select the items then hold down the Control key as you choose File > Get Summary Info. A window summarizes information on all selected items, including their total size.
To see information about each item as you select it, select one of the items then hold down the Option key as you choose File > Show Inspector. An Inspector window displays information on the selected item. When you select another item, the Inspector's contents are replaced with information on that item.
I realize that's a lot to digest and your time might be limited. This is something that only takes a few minutes and might help immediately.
Go to MacintoshHD/Applications/Utilities and locae Disk Utility. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left and then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Depending on the size of your drive, it should only take a few minutes. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility from the Menu.
Here's how to find out exactly which Mac OS you are running. Click the Apple logo top left of your screen then click, About This Mac. A pane will open. Just under "Mac OS X" will be the version number. ie., 10.4.x
Reboot your MacBook and see if this helps.... I'm retired and have time... if you need one on one help e-mail me: [email protected]
It's the least I can do

  • I tried to rename a file, it gave me an error message (can't remember the number - 43??) and then the file disappeared from the original folder. When I do a search, the file comes up under the new name, but it does not show a path, and even though preview

I tried to rename a file, it gave me an error message (can't remember the number - 43??) and then the file disappeared from the original folder. When I do a search, the file comes up under the new name, but it does not show a path, and even though preview shows the contents, I can't open the document (Powerpoint) and I can't move the document. I tried "Copy" and paste but it doesn't work. I tried "Share" with Airdrop and iChat, but the file is inaccessible. When i try to rename the file, it says the filename is too long.
When I try to open it, it says the alias is not good, and asks if I want to fix the alias. I'm afraid to do that and lose all access to this document.
Right now, it feels like a ghost document - it is on the computer intact, but it is in an undisclosed location and inaccessible.
    Please help!!

I was able to resolve this by repairing permissions, even though no permissions error was listed specifically for that file.
I could also have recovered it through Time Machine, but I'm interested in knowing how not to have this happen again!
I was afraid of rebooting and possibly losing track even of the ghost.
I did not try EasyFind - I'll keep that in mind next time.
    Thanks for all the comments.

  • Itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?

ive recently updated, itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?if i transfer the movies from the external to the laptop they will add to the library without any problem so theres no issue with the laptop but when i go to add file in itunes i can path to the external but as soon as i select the file nothing happens, just goes back to itunes

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • Can't open or move file - In use by Mac OS X

I have a file (movie) I am trying to move to a new external hard drive. I can't move it cause it says it is used by Mac OS X and cannot be moved or if I try to open it says it can't be opened.
The permissions are set correctly on this file and it plays just fine in iTunes but I can't open it in quicktime or I get that message. Anyone have any ideas to try? The Locked check box is not checked in the info window and my user has read and write access to the file.

Well I will never know what happened with that file. I tried moving it again and got the error message again. Got another message after that saying do you want to continue to move items you can move (though this was the only file I was trying) I said continue and then the file disappeared off my system.
No idea what happened with it.....

  • Trash misbehaving.  Can't move files or folders to trash without triggering "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this."

Help!  I suddenly find that I cannot move files to trash without triggering a Finder dialogue box that asks me to type in a password to continue.  When I comply, files and folders that have been moved to trash simply disappear from the desktop!  Nothing appears in the trashcan.  I'm using Lion 10.7.5 and have never noticed this behavior until today.  What's happening here?

Try recreating the Trash file, because this is a problem related to permissions. Open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities) and type:
    sudo rm -ri ~/.Trash

  • A few image files disappeared: can't be re-imported from backup

There are at least a 4 dozen pictures imported into LR 5.x last September that now cannot be searched and which are not in the dated folder where they should be - even if searched in Windows Explorer. It's part of an event, and it appears to be all those on one card from one body. I remember seeing these images in the Library module at the time. No Previews with question marks.
If I go to the duplicated import created that day I find the "missing" images in the folder created at that time. Yea Adobe for creating the easy back-up for importing. In this backup folder the images can be searched and opened in either Windows Explorer or a viewer like FastStone. .  If I put the files into the date-organized database folder (to "Synchronize" in the main directory) LR says it cannot import them as they are already part of the database. I tried copying these files in Explorer to a different hard drive and tried importing again: no help.
How can I convince LR that these need to be re-imported? More importantly, can anyone offer a scenario by which these image files disappeared from the disk and didn't leave a preview with a question mark? I didn't actually do any work (Dev module) that I remember on these. I certainly can go through with Bridge and batch rename this little set and present them again  as an import request. But what causes something to drop out of the DB and disappear as a file? Obviously some kind of operator error is the most likely, I understand.
Deleting all Previews? Seems like that would make the machine work for hours to redo Previews for 90,000 pix.

Thanks for the suggestions (and warnings). I am pretty experienced with Lightroom and know the structure behind it. What was weird here was that when I try to bring one of the images back in through Synch or Import, says "It's already part of the database" BUT when searching for the image by file name LR finds others that share the same file number (not strange) but NOT the image I want (strange). This search was performed at the root of the file/folder structure, so should be looking into every folder in the database. An Explorer search shows that the image is no longer in the database folders. It is only found in the "Backup" folders created by LR when ingesting the card at the original import.
OK, so use the OS to move some of the files (12) back "inside" the folder, click Synch folder and it tells me there are 12 new photos. So far so good. BUT -- although they are now "there" in the folder and re-imported they still do not show up in the Library thumbnail view and can't be searched in Lightroom (by file name). The 12 didn't show up on a import screen with one lone PS image in that batch that was newly created this afternoon and DID show as a new import. I expected to see the 12 on that screen.
To answer one question offered today: No, the images do not show in the Develop module.
So something tells Lightroom these are not new and that they are aready there. However, not searchable.
Next step changing the names of the offending file, like appending a letter. See if that makes them look "new".
I think I can fix this as long as I have to original CR2 files unprocessed, which thankfully, I do. Anyone have a theory about what causes this? Never had it happen.

  • Code Execution in Cover Flow View and .mov Files

There is a code inside QuickTime movies that gets executed in Cover Flow view in Leopard!!!!!!!!.
I was helping a friend installing Leopard on his machine, and after restarting, I was showing him the new options in the Finder, when a found a bunch of videos (searched on his computer with Spotlight) and switched to 'Cover Flow View', and then Safari started opening web pages from the internet (Mostly adult sites).
After doing some tests I've noticed that the pages load the moment the Finder 'refines' the view of the videos. You know when the Finder first generates a blocky image of the video (some times called proxy image) and then generates a higher or cleaner resolution of that same video.
Not only that, if I resize the window or the preview pane, the code executed again and Safari opened the pages again!!!!
The Finder also executed the code in icon view with the 'Show Icon Preview' option selected in 'View Options' (Command-J).
Opening the videos in QuickTime Player did not trigger the code. But I've noticed that the videos start playing the moment they open. The Inspector (Command-I) didn't show anything unusual. But the Properties window (Command-J in QuickTime Pro) show a "Sprite Track" of Format 'Sprite' but again the different tabs (Annotations, Resources, Visual Settings or Other Settings) didn't show anything unusual.
*CORRECTION: The code also gets executed at the middle of the video when played in QuickTime. So this problem is related to QuickTime.!!!!!!*
The only solution to stop the code execution is to delete the 'Sprite Track'!!!!.
I also opened the movies in TextEdit and found the following text almost at the end of all the weird symbols:
(I'm sorry but the code disappears when I publish this post).
That's one of the pages that Safari was opening.
I don't know where my friend downloaded those videos, but the potential security risk is imminent.
I had the same results even after updating to QuickTime 7.3
I can upload the videos somewhere (at least the 'clean' ones) so you can make you own tests.
    Any thoughts or comments?????
Is this a known issue in QuickTime?????
P.S. Once again please excuse my English (my main language is Spanish).

If I'm understanding correctly the "Sprite" is a part of how QuickTime works. In older versions you USED to be able to attach JavaScript to a sprite and do all kinds of useful and fun things. However, some websites used JavaScript to alter themselves, so a well crafted QuickTime movie could be used to deploy code that would alter websites. As a result, a LOT of this functionality was curtailed in later versions and many cool QuickTime functions no longer work.
The few that DO still work are when they are basic hyperlinks that take you to another web page, (Like at the end of this movie, BUT you have to click the link to go
    http://www.makentosh.com/tipsfromtheiceberg/Blog/Entries/2006/3/7Somebody_ToldMe....html
) and others no longer work within the browser (they only work when using the QuickTime player). Give this a try. Use Safari to "Open File..." and open the .mov file. After it's open, see if it generates any other windows from there. If it doesn't, then I'd THINK it's operating as intended BUT it wouldn't hurt to send your feedback here for Apple to look into and/or fix it if necessary.

  • IMovie 11 - Export Using Quicktime - File Disappears after Export......

    Hey everyone:
I've got a weird one here.  I've made my first project using iMovie.  I want to burn a DVD, so I clicked >>Share >> iDVD and it comes over fine.  I then setup a menu and stuff and burned it.  However, when I play it on my 52" plasma, it doesn't fit correctly.  It fills the screen, but it's almost like it's zoomed in so it cuts off of ALL edges.
So I did some research and found this post and went to try it out.  So within iMovie, I click "share using Quicktime" and change some of the various settings and export the movie as a Quicktime (.MOV) file to my "Movies" folder.  The movie is about 55 minutes, it says it'll take about 35 minutes to export.
35 minutes later I come back and the export box has closed, iMovie is still open, just like it should be, and the file I just exported is nowhere to be found.  It just disappears.  The second and third time I tried, I open a Finder window and watch the file get created, then get larger, and larger.  But once it's done, the file is gone.
So then I created a new project and made a movie that was only 10 minutes long.  It exports fine and the file is there when it's done.  In other words, I can't replicate the problem with a new project.  However, I have a lot of time in editing this movie and don't want to start over for fear of finding the same result.
    What should I do?
    Thanks!

I have this same problem and there are several threads running about it.  I have the paid-for version of iMovie, and cannot even get it to export a Quicktime movie.  This makes it even more useless than I already find it to be.  I spent the last two days working on a video, and for me to send it to my client, I would have to freight my computer to them so they could view it.

  • Desktop files disappeared from displaying on the Desktop

My existing Desktop files disappeared from displaying on the Desktop--the files still exist, and newly added files appear on the Desktop; I did not enter any "hide my files" command. How do I have them display? Running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist.  Move the .plists to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plists to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.

  • .mov files no longer reading Audio in AE CS5

I just upgraded my computer (Vista 64) from Adobe Production Premium CS4 to Adobe Master Collection CS5.
QuickTime has been updated to the latest version, 7.6.6.
In AE, all imported .mov files will show the video just fine, but I can hear no audio.   The speaker icon will show up in the timeline, but if I view the Waveform, I now get two flat lines.   It is as if the Audio was -48.00 dB, but it is set to 0.00. I have even tried to push it up to +12.00 dB, but the Waveform displays only the flat lines.
I have attempted to create a new project and import other .mov files of all sorts, and the same thing occurs - silence during RAM Previews (Audio enabled) and exporting movies (Audio enabled as well).
To prove all is enabled as said, all .aif and .mp3 files are working just fine.  As are .mp4 files with their video.
The issue is really only with .mov files.   Any help is greatly appreciated!

These .mov files are Quicktime Reference Files from AVID Media Composer.   I've been using this
method for years without issues.   I may know what you're going to say - Re-export the
.mov files using a different method.
The .aif files are now acting up as well (from AVID).  As I  scroll the timeline left to right, the Waveforms will litterally  disappear, and my audio will go out of sync.  I can't find any rhyme or  reason to it.
Unfortunately, within the time frame I have, I can't go back and re-do all of these files.  Plus I don't care for the idea that I have to change my routine to suit Adobe's potential flaw in the programing.
