Movie import Methods

Not sure if this is the best forum for this question, but I couldn't determine a better place.
I have a lot of video content from a number of different cameras and tape formats from the past 50 years.
Some of the footage is from 8mm that were transfered to VHS tape.
Some footage is on DVDs from competitions.
Some footage is on Hi8 tapes.
Some footage is on MiniDV tapes.
Some footage is from various point and shoot cameras in different formats, mpg, avi, mov, etc.
Some footage is on mobile phones.
I want to be able to digitize all of these various footage sources that aren't already digital.
I do not know when I will get around to working on creating movies from the footage, but want it available when I do.
I want the digitized footage to be in the highest quality possible and in a format that will be readible by imovie and possibly FCP.
I currently have imovieHD 6 and imovie 11.
I have an old Dazzle DV converter box. This converts composite/Svideo inoputs to a DV and with firewire to computer.
What I started:
I went through all the different tapes to make lists of what is on each one.
I used a VHS player with SVideo to Dazzle and imovieHD 6 to import the footage as DV. It's overkill on size/quality but seemed to be the easiest.
I did the same for Hi8, Digital8 tapes.
I used the MiniDV camera directly through firewire to imovieHD6 to capture the footage.
Plan to use Handbrake to convert the DVDs, but not sure what would maintain the best quality and compatiblity.
Also, not sure which point/shoot camera footage formats are compatibile with iMovie/FCP to know if I should convert them.
Once I have all this footage, organizing is the next project.
Is there ways to save metadata to video files like photo files? What to be able to identify what the footage is later. I could just use the filename, but wanted to know if there is other ways.
Due to the size of the video files, I will need to keep them on external drives and not connected to the computer.
What would be a good suggestion to have a footage library and be able to see what footage I have without connecting the drive?
I guess this is a long meassge to state the following:
I want to be able to store all footage on a harddrive for easier access in a format that can be used by imovie/FCP.
I want to be able to scan through to see what footage I have using some sort of management program.
I want to be able to maintain metadata with the footage for identifying what the footage is.
The main problem is I don't work on video projects often anymore.
When one comes up, I cringe because I think of all the work it will take just to prepare the footage first and I end up not doing it.
Trying to prepare in advance.
Thanks for reading and any suggestions are welcomed,
bdog

  • Problems using IMPORT method

    Hello,
We have just upgraded from 4.6c to ECC6.
In several programs we used Import method with the following syntax in 4.6c:
import (tname) to &1 from database zzhilan(zz) id zkey1(16) .
However in ECC6 , since it didn't compile we changed it to :
import tname to &1 from database zzhilan(zz) id zkey1(16) .
However now it doesnt read the data from the database.
How should the Import method be used in ECC6 ?
    Please your advise.
    Mazal

    Hi Mazal,
While importing source variable and destination variable should same.
    try below
    IMPORT it_itab = it_itab from database zzhilan(zz) id zkey1(16).
    hope it works.
    Thanks!!

I started getting this after installing GoPro Studio 2.

  • Problem with .mov importing as audio

    Hello!
I'm an old school filmmaker who last did intensive stuff when miniDV was king
Now I find myself at a new job shooting and editing testimonials. Everything was fine for a whole year until I tried to import video from another videographer.
I'm on a Windows 7 machine with Premiere Pro CC v.7.1.0
The note on the footage says shot on Panasonic AF150 (AF100?) 1080 p 60i
The .mov import as audio only. I have tried all kinds of sequence settings to change this. No dice.
Also, the footage has, I believe it's called, "Judder". (I can watch the footage with my QT or VLC player.)
Using a video conversion software I was able to import as MP4. But holy heck do I really have to convert all the clips before I can bring them in?
I am pretty clueless about codecs, which is likely the problem. So a quick explanation on codecs and good places to read up on them would also be extremely helpful.
Here's another issue - the videographer used a fisheye lens (or setting?) for some really nice B roll shots. Unfortunately, they are 4:3 and the  interviews are 16:9! Is this common and ends up being "my problem" or did he goof?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I do have Quicktime installed (which is why I was able to watch it on players outside of Premiere.)
    And the update didn't help

  • Does iMovie alter movies imported at full 1080i (1920x1080) ?

I have a new Sony HDR HC9 1080i camcorder (Mini DV tape).
I heard rumors that iMovie converts movies imported at full 1920x1080 to something like 900 x 480.
Is there any truth to this ugly rumor?
    Thanks.
    Paul

    This not not exactly true.
iMovie imports movies into Event files at the same resolution as their source. If you import 1920x1080 in AVCHD, the event contains an AIC file in 1920x1080.
However, when you use the Event footage in a project, the standard iMovie pre-sets for rendering top out at 960x540 (which is exactly half of 1920x1080). However, by using the Export to QuickTime option, it is possible to render in full 1920x1080.
However, for most people, the 960x540 is good enough. It is about the largest size that can be reasonably streamed over the internet. It is the largest size accepted by the Apple TV. And it easily upscales to 1920x1080 on a high quality receiver/TV with upscaling circuitry. If you are burning a DVD, it will be downscaled to 480i anyway.
As I mentioned, you can export in full 1920x1080 through QuickTime. The issue is "How do I play it?". Some people have reportedly been successful playing these files on a Sony Playstation 3. The new version of Toast allows you to Author BluRay DVDs and you may be able to play them on a BluRay player. You can also play them on your Mac Screen if you have the display resolution set high enough. A 1920x1080 will take up most, if not all, of your computer screen.
As for the Toast BluRay option: It is not practical for me to buy a BluRay burner for USB, since these run over $1000. The SATA BluRay burners are around $300, but my iMac does not have an external SATA port. However, with Toast 9, they claim you can make a BluRay-playable disk from a standard DVD. It holds about 20 minutes of high def content. I am going to burn a BluRay disk using the same project rendered in 1920x1080 and 960x540 to see if I can tell the difference.

  • Which Import method is preferrable .....

    Hi All,
I want to upgrade my database from 8.1.7 to 10g rel 2.
Can anybody would please tell me that which method is most appropriate and accurate to upgrade the database?
Which method is most efficient to get the optimize solution?
Another issue is our oracle 8.1.7 database is having WE8ISO8859P1 Character Set along with WE8ISO8859P1 National Character Set.
So which Database Character set as well as National Charcter Set would be preferrable against 8i database character set that is mentioned above for database upgradation ???
    Regards
    Milin

You have two questions which are really unrelated.
As for which method would be most appropriate and accurate to upgrade your database, I would absolutely recommend export/import method over migration (upgrade scripts). I tend to stay away from migration method because of various bugs and other problems. And, you typically will leave obsolete and deprecated features in place when you do a migration (especially from v.8 to higher versions). A couple examples I've seen are continued use of rollback segments, dictionary managed tablespaces, and use of permanent tablespaces for a user's temporary tablespace assignments.
Stay away from migration (using upgrade scripts) unless your database is so large that it is not practical to export/import.
Instead, install all the latest 10g software, patches, CPUs, etc., and then precreate your shell database modeled after your old 8i database. (Obviously don't use rollback segments tablespace, or other deprecated features.)
Then, use your 8i software to export your old database, and then use your 10g software to import your data into the new database (full import). Be sure you precreate all your tablespaces of sufficient size before you do your import.
    Hope this helps...
    Ji Li
I just read Madrid's response and we obviously have a difference of opinion. While I certainly respect Madrid's postings and opinions, I'd be curious why he favors upgrade (migration) over export/import.
As for the character sets, unless you have a compelling reason to go with unicode, the WE single byte character sets will be fine for quite a while into the future.

  • Why the movie imported from iPhone is cutting off so many time?

It is very smooth to play on 4S. However not on iphoto (Quick time) some reason.

  • Sanyo HD2000 import of HD movie One method that worked.

Here is how I was finally able to import movies from my HD2000 into iMovie this evening. This was the first method that was successful for me. Your mileage may vary.
    1) I broke down and paid $29.00 for QuickTimePlayer Pro.
    2) I then converted my *.MP4 movies that had been imported by iPhoto previously, into a new folder
called "ProcessedMovies" with the same name and *.MP4 extension.
This was done with the FILE->EXPORT and
    MOVIE to MPEG-4 setting.
    The incoming movie inspector details were Format H.264 1920 x 1080 FPS=59.94 16.55Mb/s
The outgoing movie inspector details were Format AAC 352x288 FPS=30
This was after I docked via the usb port and camera menu options COMPUTER->CARD READER and iphoto imported all the original media.
This isn't quite what I want but it's a start.
The movies in iPhoto will play at full resolution on the Mac so far.
I haven't yet been able to get the movies into iMovie into a high def format (even at 30fps) I expect 30fps will be the best iMovie will support at this point.

I purchased Steve Mullen's book "The Ins and Outs of iMovie '09" and in there was the fix for my primary problem.
When I docked, iPhoto was coming up and importing all the photos.
His tip on page 50 "If iPhoto Opens When you Plug in a USB Camcorder" was the solution.
Open Image Capture and change the General settings to "No Application" this fixed my big issue.
So far all the recording formats except two seem to import trouble free. (I tried a sample yesterday)
The 60fps (frames per second) I need to re-try. I had a sample of one of the low performance web formats (Don't recall), and got an error on it one time.... it may be a fluke.
However the 30fps full def HD, all the way down to SD video and Web based test images all imported fine.
I'm now taking my first stab at editing with iMovie.

  • Hi8 Movie Import

    Hello All,
I have been using my Sony DCR-TRV510 connected via FireWire to import my home movies recorded in Digital 8 format without issue.
Now I want to import my old Hi8 tapes, which play fine on the camera, but do not play out via firewire. Are there any recommendations on how to get this footage on my computer without purchasing another device... retaining the time stamp on the footage would be nice as well
    Thanks in advance!

On the other hand, are you aware of any Digital8 Cameras that may work in this method.
Know the DCR-TRV520 would. Unfortunately, I believe another user previously indicated the DCR-TVR510 was not hardwired to convert Hi-8 based on his conversations/discussions with Sony USA regarding the same problem. Believe this individual decided to go with the Sony GV-D200 Digital8/Hi-8 Walkman Player/Recorder for editing all of his old Hi-8 tapes. Unfortunately, I'm not sure this model (lists for about $699 but supposedly as low as $400-$500 "on the street" or $199 Refurbished from Sony Style USA) is now listed as "out of stock" everywhere I checked. May mean the model is no longer available.
The reason I ask is I have several boxes of Hi8 tapes and would like to retain the date and time coding on them if at all possible.
You take your chances here. Correct readout of DTG data seems to be "hit or miss" based on the numerous posts here.

  • Movie import into iTunes library

    Hi all,
I have a very large collection of DVDs - it's one of the first technologies I actually got into early...I'm usually late to the game, so to speak.
Anyway, given that I'm moving everything to a digital format for use on my plethora of Macs and Apple TVs, I thought I'd use something like HandBrake to rip my discs and import into iTunes.
Is this is preferrable or common method?  Is there some better way?
Secondarily, any way to get content info (Get Info stuff) that is similar to what you see when you purchase a movie from iTunes?  I'm thinking about rating stuff, brief plot, etc.
As always, thanks for your collective genius.

  • Line-pattern in movies imported

After importing movies taken with Sony HX9V in HD, a line-based pattern starts to exist in the imported movies. I might not have access of the original files from the HX9V. Is this solvable? See this link for a visual: http://i.imm.io/BFW7.png
The line pattern exists more significantly in moving objects and is nearly not visible in static areas of the movie.

Never create a line pattern at an angle. It's unnecessary.
Create the pattern at 90° angles then use Object > Transform > Rotate and tick the "Transform Patterns" option and enter the angle you are after....
Trying to get angled lines to match in a pattern can take considerable effort. Where as with this method you can create the pattern and rotate it in a matter of minutes. Let Illustrator work for you rather than against you. And, you can rotate to any angle so the pattern will function in multiple ways.
