Movie: purchase vs rent?

I just downloaded a free movie from iTunes, and it shows up as a rented movie that expires in 30 days. I used the "get movie" button, but there was also an "add movie" button. Both listed as "free". Are they both the same thing, or would "add movie" have given me a movie that does not expire? Thanks.

I tried downloading it using the "add movie" button, and it did put it in the cart, but warned that I already had it, etc. Since it was free anyway, I downloaded it and it shows up as a "movie" in my library, whereas the one I downloaded earlier, using the "get movie" button, shows up as a "rented movie" (under a different icon) in the library, expiring in 29 days.
Also, I am wanting to transfer the movie to my iPhone 3G, but when I click on the iPhone, under "Device" in iTunes, and go to the Video tab, the only option to transfer to the phone is the Rented Movie. The non-rented movie (purchased movie?) doesn't show up anywhere as an option to add to the iPhone. Is there a way to transfer the purchased movie to the iPhone? I don't want it to expire on the phone arbitrarily.
I have only downloaded this one free movie, so might not know how it is supposed to work, maybe it is some sort of copyright protection thing that allows only rented movies to be transferred?

  • TS1362 All of the movies I have rented or purchased from iTunes in the last 4 months fail to play properly. The audio and video are constantly out of sync. I have followed the iTunes suggestions to correct this, however nothing has worked. (Windows 8)

I am using a Dell inspiron 14z, with Windows 8, and before that a Dell with Windows XP. This is also happening on my iPad. For the last four months, none of the movies or television shows I have rented or purchased from iTunes have played properly. The audio and video are out of sync. I have tried the troubleshooting measures iTunes suggested, however nothing seems to work. I have read on the community that this has been a problem for users in the past, and have attempted to try some of the fixes individual users have suggested also. Again, nothing seems to work. At this point I am frustrated, as we purchase or rent almost exclusively from iTunes. I would appreciate a support-staff person response. Thank you so much.

this problem has been going on for windows users for over a year now.
Apple has no solution to this problem.

  • I cannot view rented movies (purchased through itunes) on my iPad2 in-flight

I cannot view rented movies (purchased through itunes) with the Video app on my iPad2 while flying. On a hunch, I purchased in-flight wifi and only then could I watch my rentals. What gives? Any suggestions on how to avoid paying for in-flight wifi is appreciated.

I don't think that he waited a day.  From the wording, I concluded that he waited only minutes (during take-off).
I recall seeing this issue before.  Apparently there is an issue related to copyright protection with some movies.  I stopped flying when I retired so I didn't pay too much attention to the problem.  Perhaps a search of the forum will shed more light.

  • HT2729 If i purchase or rent a movie and downloaded it into my iPad, do i need a wifi to watch it?

If i purchase or rent a movie and downloaded it into my iPad, do i need a wifi to watch it?

You definitely do not need WiFi to watch a purchased movie once it has been downloaded to your iPad. I have several movies that I purchased for watching on flights and every one of them worked fine without WiFi.
You should also be able to rent a movie and watch it without WiFi as long as the movie has fully downloaded properly. I have read about users having mixed results with this and that is why I said that you should be able to do it.

  • HT1657 If I rent a movie & decide to buy it later... Will the rental cost be deducted from the movie purchase cost? (E.g. $19.99 - $2.99)

No, you will be charged the full price, there is no discount for having previously rented it.

  • HT204266 Downloaded a movie through ITunes. Intended to use a redemption code. Only options were purchase or rent when searched for the title. Choose purchase, thinking that would prompt using the redemption code. Can I cancel that purchase?

Movie obtained through search for title in ITunes. Intended to use redemption code. Only option was purchase or rent. Choose purchase, thinking it would prompt asking for the redemption code.  Instead, it downloaded the movie and charged my account. Can I cancel that order and have my account credited for that accidental purchase?

  • Purchased and rented movies not showing upon Apple TV

I can view either my purchased or rented movies on Apple TV. The only thing that shows up on the screen is a large white screen. Any ideas or suggestions?

I assume you mean, "I can't view either my purchased or rented movies on Apple TV"
The white screen indicates an authorisation issue, try restarting your tv and if that is unsuccessful, try de/re-authorising your itms account.

  • Purchased and Rented movies not playing

recently any movies that i have downloded form itunes store or movies that i have previously downloaded haven't been playing back.
when i go to choose a movie itunes can see my movies are there but when i play them it comes up with a blank screen ( no audio or visual) and the timer counts down as if the movie is playing. This also happends with movie clips/video clips i steam from the store.
i have removed, repaird and reinstalled itunes 64bit about 6 times, downloaded quicktime and reinstalled it twice. Updated my drivers and made sure everything else was up to date, even did a system restore and still no luck.
i am running windows 8 pro 64bit but this problem has only happend with in the last 2 weeks and i have been running win8 since the start of the year.

    Hi...
iCloud backs up the following: (not purchased or rented movies)
Purchased music, TV shows, apps, and books
Photos and video in the Camera Roll
    Device Settings
    App data
    Home screen and app organization

Try re downloading the movie. You won't be charged again >  Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • HT200109 Why do all my other Apple devices not care if the movie I rented from iTunes if it was downloaded directly to that device or not, but the stupid Apple TV won't allow you to play rented movies unless you rented it directly from the Apple TV?

Why do all my other Apple devices not care if the movie I rented from iTunes if it was downloaded directly to that device or not, but the stupid Apple TV won't allow you to play rented movies unless you rented it directly from the Apple TV?
Great, so now I have to airplay it by linking my computer to my Apple TV and then the movie has to buffer! So, all that time I spent downloading the HD video has to technically "download" again by buffering. The more I use Apple TV, the more I feel like this item was not created by Apple. I don't even use it for what I originally purchased it for. If I would have known that anytime I wanted to sync a movie from my computer to Apple TV by using airplay that it would have to buffer the movie, I would have never ever ever ever ever purchased this waste of time device. So the video has to technically play all the way through one time first so Apple TV can "remember" the movie to play it back in real time afterwards.
Am I missing something here? Am I doing something wrong that can be fixing my problem? I should have known that the Apple TV had so many things backwards when simple things like when you are using the remote and you reach the bottom of your list, in order to cycle back to the top of your list you have then press the directional buton back the other way rather than most modern day devices that will automatically cycle you back to the top or to the other side when you reached the bottom or end but keep on pressing the button. That **** annoys me when I am doing a search for a movie and have to type the name in manually and have to cycle back and forth to the letters. It makes me feel like I am using a rotary phone or something!

I was told by someone to try and purchase something directly from my Apple TV and that will help authorize my Apple TV.  So I picked something that was free and it downloaded.
Then I went back to the Movie that would not work and it played just fine.
So it seemed to work.  I will have to try it on other movies and TV shows later.

  • Can't play HD movies purchased from iTunes on Windows 7 without Internet connection

Purchased (not rented) Wreck-It-Ralph from iTunes and downloaded it to my local drive. I confirmed that the file is, in fact, in a local directory. However, when I pull up the move's details iTunes it states that the file is in iCloud. (Library > Movies > R-click movie icon > Get info > Summary tab > "Where iCloud".) Every time I try to play the movie, either by playing it from iTunes or by going to the file itself and opening it via iTunes, it won't play unless I'm connected to the Internet. And even then, there's still a long pause before playback actually begins. It almost looks like it's trying to buffer it.
If the movie file is taking up 3gigs of space on my computer (that's authorized to play content from iTunes), I expect to be able to take this video on the road.

You need to authorize your computer to play your
husband's songs, by putting in his iTunes account
info on your computer, (Not your computer's
password.) meaning his login and password of his
    iTunes account.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93014
He used my account to purchase the song.
If you did enter his iTunes account information and
the song still not playing it could because the
iTunes store is down for upgrading,

    time.

  • How do I view only movies available for rent on ITunes?

I only want to see the library of movies available for rent, is there a way to select that search?  I do not wish to purchase and don't want to click through movies trying to see which are available for rental and which are not.

    You cannot.
You would have to contact itunes support and ask if they will do this for you.
