MOVIE QUALITY ON MAC MINI

Hi all
As a video club who produce our own local videos using Final Cut Studio, then copy them to dvd's for showing to local old peoples homes, hospitals, etc.
We now have a dvd player, projector with vga plus amplifier speakers and screen. Plus of course the dvd of the subject. to take to the venue. We are thinking of purchasing a Mac Mini to put all our films on to use instead of the dvd player, but will the quality be as good, or are there any other problems we need to be aware of.

Thanks Mike Hooley

The quality is very good, that of the dvd itself.
I use a core solo running as a media server.
With the stock 512 RAM it works perfectly.
The problems you might encounter would be enough hard drive space, 300 hours worth?
Front Row is awesome

  • Move Macbook to Mac Mini?

This question has probably been asked numerous times, but I can't find it. Apologize for duplication.
I have a Macbook I bought in Dec 2006. I've added a 500 GB drive and upgraded to 4 GB RAM. It's been an excellent computer, but I think it's feeling it's age (as is its owner!). I did a clean install of Lion and got all apps just like I want them. I keep an up-to-date image on an external drive with SuperDuper!. I have two questions:
    1. If I move to a Mac Mini, can I just load that image to the Mini?
    2. Will the 4 GB RAM from the Macbook work in the Mac Mini if I just get the 2 GB model? (I suspect the answer is no to this one.)
    Thanks for the help.
    Tony

    Thanks for the answer.
Now the next question would be regarding the Apple apps store.
I know the Lion I purchased is valid on any computer I register with the store under my account. Should I register the new Mini with the factory installed system before I load the image or will it be OK if I load the image from the Macbook without registering?
    Thanks.

  • How do i move files from mac mini to external hard drive

how do i move files from mac mini to external hard drive

The simplest method would be to drag & drop the files you want to move to the external drive using the Finder. Just open both the source and destination locations in separate Finder windows.

  • HT1657 Rented a movie off a gift card and can't fine the movie on my mac mini?

Rented a movie using redemption card and cant fine the movie on my mac mini.  The money is deducted from my card and no movie

Take the sdhc card out of the camcorder, plug it into the side port of the iMac.
Open iMovie and import from the card. A small window should open up to let you import.

  • Improve DVD Quality on Mac Mini?

    Hello,
I just purchased a brand-new Mac Mini from my local Apple Store. My goal is to get it all set up as a media center.
OK, I hoked it up to my 42" Sony Bravia via the HDMI cable, and it works just like a computer monitor. Excellent!
But I am wondering if there's a way to improve the quality of the DVD play.
When I put the DVD in the drive, it is really easy to start playing through the DVD Player app (which comes with OS X). However, I'm noticing that the video playback is not as "smooth" as it would be through a DVD player hooked directly to the TV set. Some scenes where there is action look just a bit choppy.
Are there settings I could play with to improve this?
Also, does anyone have suggestions for better DVD-playing software?
    Thanks,
    Matthew

In terms of DVD playing software for the Mac, there is -
    Apple DVD Player
    Front Row
    VLC
    XBMC
However an area you might want to investigate is the display refresh rate your Mac mini is using to talk to your Sony TV. DVDs come with one of three refresh rates, these are -
24 frames per second (or 23.976), this is what movies are filmed at and is also used on some NTSC DVDs
30 frames per second (or 29.97), this is what NTSC TV broadcasts use, and is also used on many NTSC DVDs
25 frames per second, this is what PAL TV broadcasts and all PAL DVDs use.
If you are playing a 24fps DVD on a TV running at 30fps, then this mis-match can result in the image appearing to jerk slightly every second or so. Similarly for other mis-matched refresh rates. Newer higher end TVs including most newer Bravias can run at all three of these rates, however your Mac mini video card needs to be configured to the appropriate settings which is not always easy. Furthermore, some of your DVDs might be at one refresh rate and some at a different one meaning you would have to keep changing. Dedicated hardware DVD players might do this automatically.
Some software like XBMC can automatically do this refreshrate switching, but possibly only for Linux or Windows. This is an area that is currently not well served on the Mac.
PS. A disappointingly large number of NTSC 30fps DVDs have errors in them such that the pattern (order) of frames is messed up. The process of converting a film from 24fps to a video (on a DVD) at 30fps is called 'Telecine'. If after this conversion, the video is then edited, this breaks the conversion pattern so the sequence of frames is disrupted resulting in jaggy images every five frames. The process of converting back from 30fps to 24fps is called inverse-telecine. This sort of error is easiest to see when single-stepping through frames one at a time.

  • High Definition (HD) movies with a Mac Mini.

I have been using an Apple TV with my HD TV set to watch movies - however, I can't have 1080p resolution with this setup, so, I am planning to get a Mac Mini and I would like to verify that in that case I will be able to play my movies at 1920-by-1080 resolution. Most likely I am going to use XBMC as a media center (I already use it with my Apple TV and I like it very much). I am planning to connect my TV to the Mini Mac using a Mini-Display-Port-to-DVI or Mini-DVI-to-DVI adapter and then a DVI-to-HDMI cable.
So, is this correct or am I looking at the wrong direction?

I used the display port to HMDI from Monoprice.
    <http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&pid=6331&seq=1&format=2>
This device integrates the optical audio into the HDMI. Worth it's price.
I then connected the Mini's Monoprice device to one of my Sony receiver's HDMI input port with a 3ft HDMI cable I got from a Woot special. However, you can get an inexpensive HDMI cable from Monoprice, too.
Now for the hard part. You will need both SwitchResX
    <http://www.madrau.com/SRXv3/html/SRX/About.html>
(Follow the instructions on this Apple Discussion page (scroll down):
    and DisplayConfigX:
    <http://www.3dexpress.de/>
Use DisplayConfigX's Test Screen tab to bring up the Image Size Test screen. Follow the instructions at the above 2nd link to adjust the screen resolution with Overscan on (check) in the Sys Prefs Display pane.
You will have to iterate between the SwitchResX instructions and DisplayConfigX's Image Size Test. I finally homed in on the best solution for my Pany using these instructions in about an hour (but I was anal about getting it just right).
    Good Luck

  • DVD Display Quality for Mac Mini Core Duo

I'm moving from PC to Mac, starting with a Mac Mini Core Duo as a media server.
The spec looks great, but I'm concerned that the CNet review says that on their test machine:
the DVD- and video-output quality was marred by false contouring (banded or splotchy colors), moiré patterns (line distortion), and jagged diagonals
I can't find any mention of this problem in this forum, so perhaps CNet had an early version, or a manufacturing defect, or was poorly configured.
To put my mind at rest, can anybody confirm that the DVD player works fine for them on this system? And if so what exact configuation they have?
Mac Mini Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.6)
PC (Toshiba Tecra)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes, large display - I'm outputting to a Panasonic
AE900 projector and putting up a 90 inches diagonal
    picture.
nice setup.. OSX with Front Row is a good platform for HTPC. Unfortunately the picture quality is not as good as what you can obtain with PC's. but it is still plenty good. Then again, if you will watch DVD's only, I would recommend getting an upconverting DVD player (Oppo is a good brand for 200 bucks aprox). Again, check out the avsforums, you'll find plenty of useful info and very helpful people.
    Gmas.

  • I tried downloading i movie to my mac mini and for some reason it doesn;t take

I would like to use my Mac Mini for video editing clips for U Tube.  I tried downloading I Movie from Internet, but it does not take....

    Does not take what?
So you purchased iMovie or the iLife package?
Did you download the installer and find it in the "Downloads" folder?

  • Easiest way to move files to Mac Mini server

I'm moving GIGs of files over to my mac mini server from my MBP. Right now it says its going to take 140 hours to move my iPhoto library over. Is their a faster way to connect to the Mac Mini Server other then ethernet? Right now my MBP is wired to my verizon router/switch and my server is wired to the router/switch. Can I put a firewire directly from the server to my MBP? Will that work?

Can I put a firewire directly from the server to my MBP? Will that work?
Yes, it should. So should the suggested ethernet cable between the two directly.

  • What is minimum Internet bandwidth is required for watching movie online on Mac Mini

What is minimum Internet bandwidth is required for watching movie online on Mac Mini

    Greetings Rahuldel,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are looking for information for minimum bandwidth for streaming speeds while watching a movie from iTunes. The attached article give approximate times for downloading a movie from iTunes based on internet speeds. I would recommend downloading the movie before watching it on your Mac mini so there will be no buffering or interruptions.

  • I rented a movie on my mac mini buts its pixelated, how can i get it to work?

I rented a movie from the itunes store i can get audio but the video is pixelated.
    How can I fix this?

    Howdy Twetz8,
To view the movie you rented with your Mac on your iPad you would sync it from the Mac to the iPad.
About renting movies from the iTunes Store - Apple Support
If you rented the movie on your computer, but want to watch it on an iOS device, connect the devices and sync using USB. When you move a rented movie from your computer, it will disappear from your computer’s iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as often as you want, but you can only have it on one device at a time.
If you rented the movie on your iOS device or Apple TV, you can’t move it to any other device.
To watch an HD movie, you need to play it on a supported device: your computer, iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or TV using Apple TV.
    Enjoy,
    Nubz

  • Downloaded Movies in 'Videos' - How to get them to Mac mini?

I purchased 2 movies in iTunes and downloaded them - they went in to 'Videos' - How can I view these movies on my Mac Mini? I have checked that I am using the same username ID on the MAC as for the iPad,  for cloud, but when I go to the MAC it shows music etc. but doesn't show the Movies purchase.

Thank you paulcb. Sounds simple enough - I connected via usb the iPad to the MAC - I was asked about backing up the iPad to the MAC and went along with that -thinking I will be able to find the Movies and play them. But I can't find where the back up is. I also have not noticed any additions to the MAC. I have clicked on all drop downs and cannot see - 'Transfer Purchase ' under File on the MAC under the menu bar for iTunes or for MAC. I looked for 'Import' as well.
    Any other ideas?
I have searched Apple help and none of the tips work...... I wonder why these movies don't show up in iTunes in 'Purchases' or 'Unwatched' ?????
Many thanks for your help.... and time....

  • How do I find firmware upgrades for a 1.66 Mac mini, or any mac

We have a Mac Mini 1.66 processor. I have updated all of the software, but notice that there are no firmware updates. How do you find applicable firmware updates? I looked at my son's Macbook Pro and see that there is a Mac Mini firmware update listed and when you click on it, it says that it is not applicable to that machine. He used the migration utility to move from the Mac Mini to the Macbook Pro. My guess is that the Mac Mini is marked somewhere as having the firmware upgrade even though we did a complete install from scratch of the OS after he moved to his Macbook Pro. The re-install took the Macbook back to Tiger and then up to Leopard. I would like to get everything up to date before upgrading to Snow Leopard. As an aside, I would assume I can delete the file if it is allowed on the MacBook Pro that references the firmware for the Mac Mini since it says it is not applicable.

If no firmware updates appears via Software Update, then it's probable that there are none applicable to your model of Mac. The most recent firmware update, probably the one your son is seeing, applies only to the 2009 Mac mini. You can, if you wish, look up a list of all updates released for any model of Mac mini here:

  • G5 User wanting to Move to a Mac PRO but questions

My G5 1.8Gz single processor mac still works but i can't do anything that I want. Specifically, 3D Graphics and animation. All the programs nowadays want a better Graphics card and better processor.
Even the Free DAZ Studio 3, needs a much better computer than i have.
My computer is quite old now i recognize that. And i'm really ready to upgrade but I don't want to spend tooo much money aside from the near 2400 for the mac pro.
    1. Would i be able to keep my Current monitor?? I have an ACER flat screen and is connected to the G5 Tower. I bought it about 1 year ago, so it's not too old and it works perfectly.
    2. Will programs that i use in the G5 work fine in the mac pro( which will have Snow Leopard?Utilities, MS Office,3D Graphics Poser 6 and DAZ Studio 3. i don't really use any CLASSIC ( macos 9) stuff. Just OS X programs.
and will all the files I have work ? I mean, i don't want to have my mac not recognize files
    3. Since i don't really want to spend extra money. Will the base Quad Core mac pro which has 3 GB RAM be sufficient even though my current G5 has 4GB??? Will the Mac pro run better even though it's less GBytes than my current G5?
Ok I'm not a scientist or professional, just a hobbyest. Some may say that it would be better to just get an iMac. i know imacs are great and cheaper but i already have a monitor and i don't want to waste it and not use it.
Or would a Mac mini be better for me???? I"m attracted to the mac mini price.. But would i be able to connect my monitor and have enough options for connecting Firewire drives etc?( There's only one Firewire port)
And is the mac mini good enough for a 3D Graphics/animation hobbyetst?

    1. You can definitely keep your current monitor when you move to a Mac Mini/Mac Pro. A DVI or VGA connection is standard and available from either with included adapters.
    2. Programs should run fine using Rosetta on Snow Leopard. However, you will have to try your individual programs to find out. Many older programs have a few bugs running in Leopard/Snow Leopard, and any current machine will run Snow Leopard only.
    3. Mac Mini versus Mac Pro: you're looking at two different classes of machine. 3D rendering requires powerful hardware unless you are very patient. Only you can decide if a Mini is fast "enough". I encourage you to go to an Apple store. They will (probably) be willing to let you install one of the programs you use on both a Mini and a Mac Pro to see how they run, or they may have something pre-loaded you can try. Then you can decide if the speed difference is worth the $ to you.
Since you're still using a G5 1.8 GHz, it sounds like you get long use out of your machines. The Mac Pro is much better positioned to last a long time. Minis tend to be more "a good solution until the next hardware upgrade" devices or home theater PCs.
Good luck; let us know what you choose and how it goes!
