Movie recording  in quicktime using x264encoder codec

quicktime pro has the option to record a movie at best (H.264) quality. I would like to use the x264encoder codec since it is much more efficient. How can i record in real time using this codec ?

QuickTime Pro includes "preset" (no options) for the "One Click" recording feature.
Short of hacking the software (probably a simple Property List edit) there is nothing you can do to use a third party codec.

  • Distorted recording with QuickTime using USB Audio CODEC

I am running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.6 with all the latest update from Software Update which includes QuickTime 7.1.1.
I am using QuickTime Broadcaster to stream back to itself (loopback) and record to disk at the same time. The input audio device is set to USB Audio CODEC (the default driver that comes with Mac OS X Tiger, and I am using an Alesis MultiMix 16USB mixer on a PowerMac Dual Core G5). I am using MPEG-4 Audio compression (no Video) of 16-bit, 44.1kHz and 128kbps (stereo).
The problem is that I usually get recordings (ranging from 1.5 hours to 2.75hours long) with distortion. The distortion sounds like audio going through Logic Pro's BitCrusher plug-in, that is, audio recorded with less than 8-bit resolution but kept at 44.1kHz sample rate. Whether it overlays on top of the original audio or replaces it, I cannot tell, but the transition is instant and smooth with no audible clicks or pops. The distortion can come in and go randomly. For example, I had one recording with distortion coming in at about 2 minutes plus and it remained until about 2hr10min when the distortion went away. Sometimes it didn't go away; other times it came in about an hour later. I also had once where the distortion last only for about 6 minutes somewhere in the middle of a 2.25 hours recording...all in all, it occurs at random. And I do on rare occasions had distortion-free recordings.
This problem also occurs on an iMac G5 with a Alesis MultiMix 12USB mixer, and in another Vara Software's Videocue PRO software which uses QuickTime for recording and playback. QuickTime 7.0.x and 7.1 also had this problem.
Because of this problem, I may need to use a convoluted method to stream and record to disk via QuickTime. By the way, I also tried streaming to another local subnet IP address just as a troubleshooting without success.

I too am having distortion problem (Sorry no solution here).
    Using OS 10.4.8, QT7.1.3, & Adobe Premiere 6.5 on a G4.
After I down loaded QT 7.1.3, my problems started. Is this when your problems started too?
Audio is in "slow motion" sound when editing. On rare occations, it sounds correct for 10 sec or so but sync is out and eventually reverts to "slow motion" sound. Even more bazar, when viewing a clip in a thumbnail preview, it works fine. So I know the orginal is good.
My contention is QT is causing this. All I want is my previous version of QT back. I think this might fix your problem too. Unfortunately, there is no reinstall that I can find that takes QT 7.1.3 off and puts QT 7.1.1or2. The reinstall QT 7.0.3 which is on the Apple website will not restall.
Looking for a reintall that will take QT 7.1.3 off, help anyone?

  • Buffer to movie frames (AVI/QuickTime)

I'm working on adding JMF movie functionality to Mathematica through J/Link and JMF. Mathematica's Java extensions don't allow you to write things like a custom datasource, but I have managed to grab individual frames. I would like to be able to image processing and then output the resulting images into a movie. Could I use a codec to take individual images and output them directly into an AVI or QuickTime movie? Any input would be appreciated.

  • Multiple audio sources for quicktime movie recording

I want to record a Quicktime movie using iSight as the video input, external audio (guitar) via a Focusrite Saffire LE (1874) audio interface and internal audio (a backing track) from either iTunes, Logic 9 or MainStage 2 (I don't care which), so I can record myself playing and then send the video to another guitarist via Dropbox or similar.  Is this possible and if so how do I set it up on my iMac?
    Thanks.

QuickTime Player Pro, QuickTime X (Snow Leopard) and QuickTime 10.1 (Lion) all include a "New Movie Recording" feature. The camera can be the internal iSight or an externaly connected one and the audio can be internal or line in.
But you can only have one video and one audio source.
QuickTime Player Pro can be used to add additional "tracks" and the .mov container can have up to 99 of them. GarageBand can help you edit the track timing. It also includes other "instuments" and can play your video while you build additional tracks.
I would record via iSight but not include any audio. Then use GarageBand to add the additional audio tracks.

  • Why does Quicktime crash on "New Movie Recording?"

I have been trying to fix a bizarre problem.
When I open Quicktime and select "New Movie Recording," the application crashes. When I open any other Quicktime driven application that wants to do movie recording, it crashes. When I try to open Quicktime Preferences for "Recording" the application crashes.
I have repaired permissions and even set up another user to see if these make a difference. They do not.
    What can I do?
    Thanks.

    SOLUTION FOUND!!
I called Apple Care this morning...they had me run through a bunch of steps that were of no use to me. The Rep was in the process of getting more info when we were cut off. So I tried the logical step: UNINSTALL Quick Time, and DOWNLOAD a new one.
I have QT PRO, so I made sure I copied my authorization key before I did this. Go to your applications folder, drag and drop Quick Time in the Trash. Then empty the trash.
Go to the Quick Time page on Apple, download and install Quick Time. You'll be prompted to restart the computer.
After signing on, I double checked to see if my version was current. I also double checked by checking software updates. I went to the QT PREFERENCES page...and believe it or not, my Pro Registration Key was already filled in for me! If yours isn't, I suggest you enter it and then try and record a movie.
Btw, I'm also an Apple Care customer, so I did a Tech Tool Deluxe scan before and after the QT Uninstall/Reinstall. Prior to the uninstall, the Video RAM test FAILED. After the reinstall, the Video RAM test PASSED.
I just recorded three short video and audio tests...works like a charm!
I don't know what could have caused this, but I found it unusual that you and I had the same problem on the same day. Hopefully the gang at Apple will recognize this if it is indeed a wider issue.
Good luck...and let me know how it went for you!

I upgraded to yosemite and iOS 8 in order to record with quicktime. But when I select Record a new movies I immediately get an Operation Could not be completed error. When I choose record audio or screenshots, I get a little further, but as soon as I select my ipad as the source I get the same error message.

You don't need to be a developer for this to work. I get the same error. Just one more thing on the list that make me upset more and more with Apple. Things just don't work out of the box like they used to.
This new feature was to be included with iOS 8 and Yosemite.

  • Quicktime not recording audio in New Movie Recording

Audio is not recorded when using an audio interface as the input in New Movie Recording, but records fine when in New Screen and Audio Recording. Using my laptop's internal microphone is fine, cannot work out what the problem is, as it has worked absolutely fine in the past, but has stopped.
Sound can be heard and the volume meter in Quicktime responds to sound coming in, just doesn't record at all in that mode.

Are you launching Captivate with Run As Administrator privilege?
If one of your co-workers logs onto your PC with their user profile, does the same microphone that doesn't work for you work OK for them?

  • How long will quicktime pro movie record for?

how long will quicktime pro movie record? i would like to record a 10+min onscreen movie clip. would like to find out before I purchase it. thanks. owen

how long will quicktime pro movie record?
That depends. How much free space do you have available on a single drive? Which compression format do you plan to use? How fast is your CPU. Barring the unexpected, QT 7 Pro will record until it runs out of scratch space. Frame rates are dependent on your CPU power which means newer, more powerful platforms record more frames per second and thus tend to have higher data rates up to the max standard for the system. Lastly, the compression format/device type/device capture size/graphic complexity combination also determines the average data rate. So, as long as the average data rate times the duration of the clip is less than the amount of free space available on your hard drive, you can record continuously.
i would like to record a 10+min onscreen movie clip.
If by "oncscreen" movie you are referring to a "screen capture" of a movie, the QT 7 Pro will not do this. You either need to use a third-party screen capture application or upgrade to Snow Leopard for QT X "screen capture" capabilities.

  • Quicktime Pro crashes whenever new movie recording is selected

I just got a brand new Macpro 2x 3ghz quad core with OSX 10.4.1. Running Qt 7.2 using AVDC-110 for capture. Seems to work with imovie. But I can only capture video with quicktime if Pro Tools is open. Playback in Pro Tools through AVDC-110 seems to be hit or miss after capture with either program, (the same file only playsback through the 110 about 1/2 the time) though videos captured on my old G5 with the same capture device playback flawlessly on the new computer. If Pro Tools is not open, Quicktime crashes when either "new movie recording" or "recording preferences" are selected. The problem seems to be a conflict between my AVDC-110 and quicktime, like quicktime doesn't see the device until another piece of software has recognized it. Any ideas?
    thanks for any help.

I'd try upgrading your system software... any reason you haven't yet?
Also... try repairing permissions in DISK UTILITY.
See if that doesn't help. If not, we'll go in and do some other stuff too.

  • Macbook pro fails to read sd card with movies recorded on it, any ideas? I can view them in the video camera so know they are there somewhere. I am now thinking I should have formatted or initialised the new card before using it.

My macbook pro is failing to read a new sd card with movies recorded on it. Any ideas please? A previously used SD card has downloaded without problems. I have tried using a card reader as well as downloading from the video camera itself, neither works.
I can view the latest recordings on the video camera so know they are there somewhere. I am now thinking I should have formatted or initialised the new card before using it but didn't think of that at the time. Obviously don't want to do this now as it will wipe the movies.

  • Exporting an  interactive quicktime movie to be be used on PC

I have created a Keynote 06 presentation that is to be interactive. I exported to Quicktime using Sorenson 3 compress, best setting. When I go to watch the presentation it is not interactive. My goal was to create a Keynote presentation that stays on until I click on the PC laptop and this would tell Keynote to advance 1 slide and hold until I click the the keyboard again. What I currently have is a Quicktime movie which is 5m33s total running time it plays all the way through, it is not interactive at all. I need to know what am I doing wrong. I have to deliver this presentation for tomorrow A.M. so any and all help is appreciated.
    Sebastian

    No, no special keys.
At this point, I'd suggest creating a two frame presentation with a hyperlink on the first slide that takes you to the second slide and a hyperlink on the second slide that takes you to the first slide. No transitions, just text on the slides labeled slide one and slide two.
See if you can get this simple presentation to work correctly. If it doesn't determining what the problem is will be a lot easier than working with a large presentation.

  • Battery died and macbook pro shut down while  I was movie recording using QTP 10.2

Does it mean my film is gone for ever? - I can't find it anywhere in the movie folder or any other place help me please.

No I wasn't recording the screen, I was recording " movie" - from the webcam. And yes, normally when I terminate the recording  Mac askes me what should it be called and where to save it, and of course this didn't happen. - is there a chance the unterminated recording is hidden somewhere,? and can i somehow retrieve it?
The answer is essentially the same. The temporary scratch file will be located in the temporary "scratch" area for your user account on the start-up drive. The file still won't open in any QT player. Even if you locate it, you would still have to calculate the exact duration of the file in terms of frames/time for the file's timing references and enter the correct data for the file container and each track header if you can locate an app to read/edit the data on the drive to "create" acceptable termination markers so the file will be recognizeable by QT based apps. Since the frame/data rate for for such recordings tend to be inconsistent (i.e., dependent on system CPU power and recording mode in use) this process would, I believe, be more than even most advanced users are willing to attempt. (I.e., I have never succeeded in such a calculation attempt but have been able to recover files for which the all of the required data was known—e.g., the restoration of non-destructively trimmed files which is a much different operation. All I am saying is that, in theory, it might be possible for a thoroughly knowledgeable user to recover the data saved up to a point just prior to the loss of power but I am not such a person. This also assumes the hard drive itself was not compromised/corrupted when power was lost.

  • I can't open any 60p .mov files in quicktime.  Footage was shot on a JVC GY HM150 which is supposed to record in native fcp format.  Any ideas how I can open these files successfully?

I can't open any 60p .mov files in quicktime or FCP5.  Sometimes in QT the audio plays but not the video. Footage was shot on a JVC GY HM150 which is supposed to record in native fcp format.  Any ideas how I can open these files successfully?

Get ClipWrap2 and convert to an editable format for your version of FCP5.
    Probably DVCProHD will work

Quicktime won’t let me select an area to record , I’m using quicktime 10.0

QuickTime X for Snow Leopard can only record the entire display.
Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite each have a newer version of QuickTime X and the most current version is 10.4.

The basic answer is that Apple has not programmed the capture routine with this capability. As such, you can always send QT feedback requesting this feature be added as a future enhancement.
