Movie render too slow in After Effects CS4

I have Mac Book with 2 .0 G RAM running AECS4. It took 2 hours to render a project with 30 second and It's only use 10 - 20% of 2.0 G RAM in the Render Queue. What can I do to make it render faster ?. Please help me , Thanks very much

okay this is annoying, I have a 1.7ghz processor , and 1.25gb of RAM with a GForce2.0 video card.  yes i know its most certainly not the fastest computer, but it works. also, it came from a special place, fallen from heaven and left at the dump. yup, thats where i got it. straight out of the magic box of old and abandoned technology.  unfortunatly it wasnt quite working at the time, it needed a new power supply and hardrive, bc the old one was infested with earth link and only had 10mb out of 40gb left in it. anyway thats beside the point, what my point is, id like to know what kind of hardware i could put in my computer to making it quick render things when im still in the editting project, of course im new to after effects and dont know much, but whenever im actually having some fun and making some interesting stuff, the program just doesnt want to keep up. so id like to know if i should get more RAM for it or get a multi core processor, or maybe even a more suitable video card,      and if nothing else would work. just a new computer. also id like to know if i over clocked my processor a bit, would that help the speed of like my computer quick redering stuff,   it came with a high performance neon fan (very loud) so i think i can overclock it, just dont know if it will help.     by the way its a Dell 8100     if ud like to look up the specs on microsoft, but its modified a bit.

Can anybody can slove this problem for me?

Mylenium asked very pertinent questions.  I'll make some educated guesses, which may or may not apply.
First thing: 2 GB may seem like a ton of memory to you, but in AE-Land, it's NOTHING.  You need to trick that machine of yours out with memory.  On a 32-bit system, that would mean bringing it up to 4 GB.
If you're trying to use multiprocessing, turn it off and leave it off.  On a 32-bit system, you'll never have enough memory to make multiprocessing work efficiently.
Trying to speed rendering by using Open GL acceleration?  Turn that off, too.
Since you're on a 32-bit system, the most recent version of AE you can run is Version 9.  Make sure it's fully updated.
But if you shot video on a DSLR, HDV Camera, XDCam or Flip Cam, you could still have problems.  Since you can't be running AE 10, which pretty much solved the problem of long-gop footage, here's why:
    Dave's Stock Answer #1:
If the footage you imported into AE is any  kind of the following -- footage in an HDV acquisition codec, MPEG1, MPEG2, AVCHD, mp4, mts, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.
These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information.  However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information.  Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.
In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide variety of problems.
I'm a Mac guy, so I like to convert to Quicktime movies in the Animation or PNG codecs; both are lossless.  I'll use Apple's Compressor, Adobe Media Encoder or Quicktime Pro to do it.

  • After Effects CS4 error during render

The error appearing is as follows...
After Effects: AEGP Plugin Media IO Plugin:
    Unknown Error!
    MediaIO2 error: 0x4
Not enough memory to complete this encoding
    ( 5027 :: 12 )
Now, my computer memory is very poor (1.98 GB RAM), however, I do not believe this is the issue as I have tried rendering the exact same file on my other computer with 8.00 GB RAM, but the same error occurs.
I am completely baffled with why this error may be occuring, I have tried many ways to try and stop this. Such as...
Changed the "RAM to leave for other Applications" to 0.25 GB
    Enabled Multiprocessing
Enabled Disk Cashe and to a size of 10,000 GB
Installed the latest update of After Effects CS4
Tried changing After Effects CS4's priority and affinity using Task Manager
Tried rendering with only After Effects opened with all other applications closed
Rendering with different output modules rather ".wmv", such as ".avi" etc.
Changed the video size from 856x480 to 428x240 etc.
I have tried rendering different sections of the video to avoid the parts where it has previously failed to render, however, it is continuing to crash and fail regardless of the section
The project I am rendering is rather large (4 Minute File), consisting of atleast 1 GB worth of imported video (.wmv) and images (.png) etc. However, before today, rendering was never problem and my renders would always run smoothly without crashing, so i'm completely unsure on what the possible change is and what could resolve the issue.
Thank you, all help is appreciated!

Any Windows Updates recently? Installed some CoDec pack or alternate media player software? If so, get rid of CoDec packs and reinstall Windows Media Player using the standalone package downloadable from Microsoft...

  • Adobe After Effects CS4 post render errors.

I am currently working on Adobe After Effects CS4.
I created a video on Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 mixing 2 sound tracks and a video track + another transparent video track with a logo. I've checked the project many times on Premiere Pro, and it seemed excellent. Then I imported the Premiere Pro Project to After Effects CS4 and checked the sequence again in ae cs4 to confirm it before rendering. After checking the video, I started rendering it.
    All went ok.
But after rendering the video I got a huge problem. The video works excellent up to 20mins and suddenly the primary video became green colour, but the sounds and the video track where I set the transparent video, still works fine. The primary video was green colour till the end.
This is a serious problem! Can anyone help me to fix it!! Its Urgent!!

My system properties are as follows.

  • After Effect cs4 cannot render jpg on network on mac but render locally okay

After Effect cs4 cannot render jpg on network on mac but render locally okay
We use intel mac pro as workstation, and our servers are windows 2003 servers.
After Effect cs4 H264 render  on network without any problem bud jpeg not.
    Thank You
    Ayhan.

Perhaps you must just enable the Allow Encoding using Legacy CoDecs option in the Quicktime control panel on the network machine or else some of that may not show up. Of course make sure QT is installed correctly in teh first place, as Todd and Rick said. On a server, you may need to set special group policies for that to work, also.

  • After Effects CS4 ram preview slow start-up (8 core)

    Hi,
I have an Intel 8core PC and I'm working with After Effects CS4 on Windows Vista 64 bit.
When I press on ram preview the CPU usage has a slow startup till 100%.. Is this common or? Cause it takes a while till it really uses the CPU of 100%.. so it has a delay..
    Thanks!

I have a similar system. 2 AMD Opeteron 2.3gb quad processors, 8 gb of RAM, Quadro FX5600 video card. I had called Adobe support about how slow my new system was compared to the old system that had a dual core Intel with CS3 and Win XP Pro. Here is the problem:
On the new 64 bit architecture, After Effects CS4 is still a 32 bit program but takes advantage of renders with the 64 bit OS by running After Effects on each core. If you only have 8gb of Ram with 8 cores( like I do), After Effects is loading on to each core. This leaves 1 GB per core to run the OS and After Effects. He told me what I need to do is (1) eliminate half the cores or (2) load the system up with 32 Gb of Ram. I'm currently order more Ram memory but have disabled all but 2 cores in msconfig advanced tab. It working much better at this point. Still slow but not dragging. I've order another 16 Gb of ram and will replace the other old 8 gb of ram with another 16gb at a later date.

  • After Effects CS4 & Wacom Showstopper bug.

Hi! For more than one year I've being feeling that my machine was the slowest machine on Earth, so I spent a good deal of money on a new HP Z800 with a Quadro FX 5800 and 24GB of RAM with windows 7 64 and a set of SSD raid that gives me over 700MB per second, after install After Effects CS4 and try it, was awesome, such a good response and super fast, but.... after finish installing all the rest, AE was slow like on my previous 4 years old machine.....   so something was wrong. To make the story short, was the Wacom driver, if I turn it off, all goes back to normal, turn it on and all goes slow, so far I was able to reproduce it on 7 machines, Win XP, Win XP 64, Vista 64, and Win 7 64, the all show the same problem, and all the machines are different. And the problem can be reproduced very easily. I've made a video showing how to reproduce it. This problem render the Wacom with AE as a non viable option for anyone. I've noticed this since about 12 months ago, but never thought is was a hardware / driver problem. Just thought AE was excruciatingly slow.
    Here is the video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KwzASwrnC0
Hope Adobe and Wacon recognize this problem and fix it as fast as possible,

    Hello,
I'm using the trial of CS6 Production Premium, and After Effects CS6 has a terrible problem with the Wacom. After a video preview with audio or even just an audio preview, the Wacom will become very slow, almost like the computer is under insane processor load, but my CPU monitors don't seem to be doing much. I have a 24-core Dual-Xeon PC with 48GB memory and I am trying to make use of the multi-processor capability (it would be criminal if I couldn't use it).
The Wacom becomes slow with AFX and occasionally unresponsive. It makes it impossbile to work with AFX. I refuse to use a mouse, so that's out of the question. Also, this software should work with a Wacom like everything else does. I don't have this issue in any other program.
I've set AFX to use either 20 or 16 processors with .75GB memory per core. Seems this should work ok but the Wacom is being pummeled into submission, and that's a really bad problem if I can't even move my cursor. Makes me want to close down AFX ASAP, so I hope to find a fix.
I am using the latest Wacom driver and the trial for this software is only days old, so this problems should have been fixed by now according to this thread. I'm not too motivated to spend $1800 for this suite if I can't even use AFX with a Wacom, which is the main reason I'm after the Production Suite.
If I can't get this working I will probably just buy Vegas, even though Vegas is a big old crash monkey. No Wacom problems at all though.
    Any ideas?
Also, anyone notice funny cursor behavior when typing in this forum? It seems to jump around on its own and this doesn't happen to me anywhere else. Could be a residual effect of the Wacom weirdness. This fields don't seem to like 'Shift+Enter' either.
    Thanks,
    Dan

There's a list of the big new features in the
"New features in After Effects CS4" section of After Effects CS4 Help on the Web, and you can read about every little change to the UI in the
"User interface changes from After Effects CS3 to After Effects CS4" section.
But I thought that all of you who have posted requests to this wishlist might like to get specific responses to some of the items on this list.
First of all, though, I'd like to point out an innovative set of features that I think addresses a request that many of you have made... just not exactly as you asked for it. All of us have wanted a better way to see into and navigate among nested compositions (precompositions). The Composition Mini-Flowchart and Composition Navigator make moving around in a complex project much, much faster and easier. Telling you to see the
"Opening and navigating nested compositions" section isn't going to do this feature set justice. You'll only appreciate how slick this is when you get your hands on it.
Oh, and we reversed the behavior of double-clicking versus Option-double-clicking a precomposition layer: Now double-clicking opens the source composition in the Composition panel, not the precomposition layer in the Layer panel.
Now, on to the specific responses...
    David Wigforss:
    > I completely agree that the graph editor needs work....
    > Position values need to be seperated into 3 distinct values that can

    Mark Weiss:
    > would like to see XDCam EX import capabilities.
    Done.
    See
    "Supported import formats".
    AndyClarke:
    > all effects in 32 bit or float
Not quite all. But more are, including all of the 3D Channel effects, which is a category that really needed the upgrade.

    > prob a really simple little thing but a 'centre anchor point' button could be handy?
Move layers so that their anchor points are in the center of the composition or view?
If so, then done. See the first tip on the

We've had features for using the pen dynamics with the paint tools for a while. See
    "Brushes and the Brushes panel".
That said, we've made some improvements under the hood that should make using a pen better (e.g., modifying the sensitivity during certain click and drag operations).
    Darren McNeill:
    > Simple, I would like After Effects to have the ability to extrude Text in 3d space.

Done. And then some. On steroids.
    See
    "XMP metadata in After Effects".
    Navarro Parker:
    > I'd love AE projects to be searchable. Having the ability to search for comp names or source footage

Done, as long as you have the means to search within XML files. The new XML project file format opens up a lot of scripting possibilities, too.
    See
    "About projects".

Though we did add "more stuff", we also spent a lot of time polishing the application this time. The number of small tweaks to address pain points was very large.

I give a link to a script from Dale Bradshaw on the

  • After Effects CS4 Performance (BRUTAL)

Despite the comments on this board (from Adobe themselves) claiming improved After Effects CS4 performance over its predecessor, my experience is the exact opposite. This version seems half baked to me.
AE CS4 isn't just SLOW, and by slow I really mean dreadfully unusable, It's unstable as well. Even running the same template files that came with CS3 and 4, there's a huge difference in render time, ram previews etc. When you can't even rotate a simple cube without crashing, there's some real problems, and this is just the beginning. The previous version had no show stopping issues, it performed like a trooper. This latest however, I can't see how I could use it day to day for anything..
    There is no other software on this machine other than, CS4, Firefox, and Lightwave 9.5, which by the way, handles textured objects with hundreds of thousands of polys, not 6. I first get an error message that reads as followed;
After effect error: crash occurred while invoking effect plug-in "Live Photoshop 3D"
followed by, After Effects can't continue: sorry, After Effects has crashed. See... blah blah blah..
By the way this occurs with or without OpenGl enabled.
    Systems specs
    8GB Ram
    Q6600
Hard Drive space 4TB, install drive, 156 GB free
    Vista Business 64
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS (driver 178.13)
This is the same machine that ran CS3 very well, so there shouldn't be anything wrong with this rig..

    Fausto,
I have no problem importing or animating your PSD - no crashes, at least. The resolution is very high. I got better results by cutting the resolution of your PSD in half, which may or may not be an option for you. I improved responsiveness a little by setting the PS 3D layer to "Use Photoshop Transform" in AE.
But ultimately, the responsiveness of the 3D layer in AE is impossible to work with, except with Live Update disabled. It seems like a RAM issue to me. What size are the texture layers on each side of the cube? If they're all 3000x2000-ish like your document, and you're working at full res, consider that AE has to hold all six images in RAM, plus manipulate them in 3D.
My own sense is that the whole 3D layer thing simply isn't ready for that kind of resolution in AE yet. And probably wont be until true 64bit code allows the storage of all those textures in RAM more easily.
As a side note, don't know if it's my location or your server, but your 74Mb image took me almost 2 hours to download.

  • How to change how many cores to use in after effects cs4

so i raced my laptop vs my desktop
desktop:intel core 2 quad 2.33 ghz  4 gigs of ram
laptop: intel core 2 duo 1.83 ghz 4 gigs of ram
and my desktop beat it by a little bit
    kinda sad
    then i went to
    edit>preferences>memory&multiprocessing
then i clicked on render multiple frames siultanesously [clicked on the check box]
    and then relized that
    my laptop said
actual cpu's that will be used: 2
    my desktop says
actual cpu's that will be used: 1
that is why my desktop was running so slow1
can someone help me change that?

    Hoonathan:
Even though in After Effects CS4 there's a new preference item to set how many cores to use (or how many to leave idle for other purposes), you have to bear in mind that this feature works by launching a number of background processes (ie, headless versions of the full application) according to the number of cores in your machine. Because of this, the more cores you have, the more RAM you need for the feature to work at all (or it will simply refuse to launch the background processes because of insufficient RAM). For a quad-core machine, 8 GB of RAM would be the minimum recommended amount (you could probably get all 4 processes to launch with 6 GB, but I don't think that would be a good idea). You should be able to have at least 2 cores used in your desktop system, though. Go to Preferences > Memory and Multiprocessing. Of course, enable "Render Multiple Frames Simulataneously" and make sure "CPUs to leave for other applications" is set to 0 (zero).  Also, check that the minimum allocation (ie, minimum RAM amount per core for the processes to launch) is 0.5 GB.
If the number of cores is still 1, try moving the Longer RAM preview/Faster rendering slider and see if at some point, it enables the second core.
In the long run, upgrading your desktop system to 8 GB of RAM (or more, if the motherboard allows it) would be the best move.
Of course, for an in-depth description of all settings involved, take a look at the Memory & Multiprocessing preferences section in After Effects Help.

  • Severe audio problems in After Effects CS4 and MXF and more...

    Hi!
I've been experiencing a lot of problems lately with several CS4 products.
First, and the worst, is that there seems to be some severe audio bug in After Effects when handling mxf-files. I pre-cut a project in premiere CS4, shot with a Sony EX1, and then imported the project in After Effects CS4.
In premiere everything worked fine and I had all the audio. In AE however the audio matched with the MXF-files disappeared (Yes I had the import audio box checked). All other audio worked fine from the music tracks and so on, but the MXF-files (MXF for NLE) was completely blank, the waveforms were completely flat. I checked every option there is in AE regarding audio and tried enabling and disabling XMP ID's and so on. After a lot of tweaking and testing I understood that the problem was not with any settings anywhere, the MXF-files lacked audio even if I started a new project and just imported the MXF-file.
The problem seems to be connected to when importing from Premiere. My colleague was editing a similar project on his computer in After Effects without problems, and he started out fresh in AE (didn't pre-cut in premiere). However, we tried to move my project to his computer, to see if the problem was connected with incompability with my hardware or such, and he got the same problem as me when he opened the project. Waveforms on MXF-files were completely flat. Certain confirmation that the problem was not connected with my computer appeared when he later reopened his own project, that had worked fine before, and audio was now completely gone - waveforms flat. An hour later, by chance, his audio suddenly popped back.
I have experienced this problems in two different projects in different forms (but both pre-cut in premiere). In the first, audio disappeared while previewing but was there when I ctrl-scrolled and rendered (no I hadn't muted audio in the preview panel). In the second, audio was completely gone even when rendered.
In both cases I tried saving and restarting the computer, reimporting from premiere, starting a fresh after effects project and only importing the mxf-files, changing the project settings, fps fixed to the correct instead of auto, changing output audio mapping, changing XMP, and so on in every possible way and combination I could imagine.
At my company our suspicion is that After Effects flags mfx-files imported from Premiere in some wierd way, to strengthen and ensure compatibility between the two - regarding different audio tracks, settings and effects from premiere (and this is almost what you could suspect that the XMP ID is for, but as explained with or without doesn't change a thing regarding this). We have no problem with the pure MXF support for AE, as MXF-files work just fine in After Effects if you import them directly and have not imported them through premiere earlier (but after a file has been "flagged" you seem to be sc***ed)
Anyone else experiencing this? Or am I missing something huge?
As additional notes, the dynamic link function seems extremely buggy and both premiere both sometimes complains about "dynamic link already in use and only one connection blah blah" even though only one link is used, and even though you restart the projects, programs, computer, whatever.
In furher addition Adobe Media Encoder (which also seems to be using some sort of dynamic link offspring) is super-buggy and most codec formats either doesn't start to render or just renders partially and then the program hangs. The problem have a connection with a process named pproheadless.exe eating upp all the RAM (4gbs).
(My workstation has been working smoothly for one and a half years and I have had very little problems with CS3 and "just" AE CS4. I am cautious of updates, don't have spyware and use Quicktime 7.5 as 7.5.5 is superbuggy and people seems to have problems with 7.6 and it doesn't fix the gamma issues anyway.)
Sorry if this was a long post but the problem is compl

Dude, that's what these forums are all about. Everyone in here says they dont work for Adobe, but they all act like apologists for what is clearly a disaster of a software release.  My complaints aren't as specialized as yours, just very basic, and I wont go into all of them, because the list is long, and includes nearly every program in CS4.
I'm going for a refund, either from the retailer or my credit card company. Releasing software like this is dishonest.

  • Transferring After Effects CS4 Project to a different computer

I have basically contructed a project in After Effects CS4, but unfortunately, my computer is quite poor and crashes during rendering. So I was wondering if there is a way for me to transfer the entire project to a different computer with After Effects, so I can render it and further edit it there instead. Thank you.

Use the Collect Files command to gather all of the footage into one folder, copy that folder to an external disk, and move it to the new computer. You'll also need ot make sure that any fonts and codecs used are installed on the new computer.

  • MP4 File in Adobe After Effects CS4 Only Plays Audio

So, I recorded some videos of Just Cause 2 on my PS3, and transfered them over to the videos section, I then put the videos on a USB flash drive, and put them on my computer, where I tried to open them in Adobe After Effects CS4, it didn't work. xD
It pretty much has no video, only audio.
But if you play the actual file with a player like Windows Media Player, it'll play fine.
I've tried changing the file extension to Mov, WMV, AVI, and every other one I could think of. And it'll only give me an error saying it's probably not a supported file type xD.
Oh, and I also have other mp4 files that will open in AE fine.
    Any help would be awesome.

Transcode the file using tools like SUPER©, MPEGStreamclip, ffmpeg and so on. There are too many flavors of MPEG 4 out there that AE could handle them all and this seems to be exactly one such case.

Can anyone help me out, i really want to use this super cool program
    Gravious

Well, for starters, I wouldn't extract the installer packages to the place where later the program will reside (C:\Program Files\Adobe). that is bound to cause any number of conflicts in the installer because source location = target location. Please move the files out of that directory to a neutral location. The same may even be true for your L: drive due to similarity in folder structure. That aside, your computer is not the newest one. While CS4 should run on P4 processors, there are no guarantees, so even a call to support may not resolve the matter. Since the setup crashes right away, it is more likely that some critical system library is missing or it5 really cannot handle your processor. For the first, run a manula Windows Update and include a few extra components like . NET runtime. You may also need to install additional MSVC runtimes, so stop by at the Microsoft site. Regarding the processor, you should look into turning off hyperthreading in the BIOS and/or tweaking other settings like SSE support or interrupt handling. sometimes this helps.

This post on Jeff Almasol's blog gives some information about an issue with ScriptUI scripts that can cause After Effects CS4 on Mac OS to crash when you quit the application:

I want to maximize the use of the render farm and not just limit it to AE, I want to be able to render in multiple creative applications. Deadline looks good except as of today its Windows/Linux only: http://www.franticfilms.com/software/products/deadline/feature_set/
I want to throw in Final Cut Studio into the Mix along with Modo, Houdini, C4D and other applications, but strictly on Mac OS X.
