Movie rental still taking up space on iPhone

I downloaded a rental movie on iTunes then moved it to my iPhone. I have already viewed the movie which was around 5 days ago. The movie is gone but the space is still being used up on my iPhone (2.4 gigs) and even after I sync the space is not being released. How can I free up this space not actually being used???

Hey there ImpossibleXY,
It sounds like you have some items on the phone taking up space but you cannot find them to delete them.
First, if you have not already start by restarting the phone and your computer, then try the sync again to see if it updates correctly.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

If the issue persists I would next backup restore the device with iTunes to see if that refreshes the space correctly on the phone.

I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) with iTunes but the messages are still there. How can I get rid of these texts for good and have more space on my phone? 6.33 gb of other space is way too much, thats almost half of my overall available space (13.5 gb.) I don't want to reset my phone and lose all my other texts/ app progress/ photos. I do have backups, but when I restore from the backup the other space comes back along with everything else. What can I do to get rid of this other space and the 'deleted' text messages? (I'm running iOS 6.1.3 if that helps)

But once again, I do not want to lose my other texts, app progress, and photos. I could sync the photos but i would still lose the app progress and texts. I would only restore if it was the only option left, but the other space, as already stated, isnt the main concern. The main concern is those 'deleted' texts. If they go, then a good size chunk of the other space goes. I know you CAN delete texts for good. It worked fine before. All i want to know is why its not working for me now, and how to fix it.
I also know that when you delete texts on your iphone, they get marked for deletion, however they stay on your device (thats why they show up when you search for them.) then when you sync your device with itunes, the texts marked for deletion should disappear. When i synced they didnt disappear. Thats what i need an explanation/solution for. Why the texts marked for deletion didnt get fully deleted after the sync.

  • I have like five GB's of ghost data (data the device claims is not there but it is still taking up space) on my I pad 2 from a failed movie download attempt. How do I fix that with out resting my iPad? I have only 1GB left of storage

I have like five GB's of ghost data (data the device claims is not there but it is still taking up space) on my I pad 2 from a failed movie download attempt. How do I fix that with out resting my iPad? I have only 1GB left of storage
The movie had gotten to the point that I could watch it all the way through but it still said processing and got stuck at that point and when I turned off the wifi to try to restart it, it deleted its-self but did not free up any of the storage It was taking up
Restarting my iPad does not help
Some thing similar also happened to my old laptop when trying to download the iOS 5 update to my laptop when it came out. It kept getting disconnected and every time it would try to start over and act like what had already been downloaded was not there though it was still taking up the storage space.
And it continued repeating until it took up all of my storage space. The data file would not show up anywhere so I had to restore my laptop to the factory settings and that worked for awhile but I eventually had to get a new laptop.

Did you try to set it up as new device, as explained in this article?

If this does not work, use iTunes to set it back to factory settings, which would also install the latest software:

  • HT4914 I have iTunes Match. Why is music still taking up space on my iPhone?

I just purchased iTunes Match. Why is my music still taking up space on my iPhone?

If you have iTunes Match, yes the idea of that is that you have access to all your music from anywhere. If you access it though you will be downloading it, in order to play the music you have chosen to play, once downloaded, that music will stay on your device unless you delete it.
Music that is on your phone will show up as normal, music that is only in the cloud will have a cloud icon next to it, when downloaded the cloud icon will disappear, if you delete it again the cloud icon will disappear again.
In the example below, all my albums by Matt Schofield are on my phone, the others would need downloading.
Photo's are different they kept on your device and only synced to the cloud so they can be pushed to other devices.

  • Deleted files still taking up space

    Hi all,
I've done a search and can't find answers or figure it out. I'm manually managing my iPod through iTunes since I don't want everything to be synched. I've manually deleted various files on the iPod through iTunes, including all video files. Yet in the summary, iTunes still lists my iPod as having 3+ GB of video, even though I've verified there's no video left. I've even deleted a lot of audio files, but iTunes still keeps saying my iPod is full. It's as if my deleted files are still taking up physical space even though I've deleted them. Is there an [empty trash] icon or command I just can't find?
    Thanks!

    Thats it! You're a genius!
The KEY point here is this:
Just like in Itunes, the Music Library and Playlist are two different things.
Just because you delete a playlist, doesn't mean you deleted it from your library.
So, all of this time, I was deleting whole playlists or a few songs from the playlist by highlighting and Edit > Delete. So visually, they were gone. However, everything is still in the library. Every song I ever added since I bought the ipod was still there!!
    SIMPLE DIRECTIONS:
    1. Connect Ipod
    2. In Itunes: Device > iPod > Music - you will see the long list. Manually checking and "sync" does not officially remove it from the ipod (at least not in my case). I manually DELETED them by highlighting and Edit > Delete.
I immediately checked my ipod summary and yes, the space was free!!!!!!!!!!

  • Removing Photos but still taking up space on Storage!?

So I have a question not sure if I am doing this right or if its a bug. So I have a 6 Plus and it says that my photos are taking up a total of 1.8 gigs of space. The issue I am having is that I am removing photos from from the phone but it still is saying 1.8 gigs being occupied. I haven't removed all of the yet, but enough to where it should have dropped to 1.7 or 1.6 gigs? Does anyone know why this is happening? Any help will be appreciated.

No I did not but it says on storage that I have 14 GB left and that I have no video data and the games only take up 4 GB. it is not coincidence that the other 8 GB that are used on the device happen to be the size of the two films I have. It says I don't have them and without internet they don't show up on the device (e.g. Because they are on the cloud) so why are they still taking up storage?

  • Photos taking up space on IPhone when I don't have any photos

I deleted all the photos off my IPhone 4s and put them on my iphoto to clear up some space. However, under my 'Usage' it says my photos are taking up 114mb (77mb for my camera roll and 35 for my photo library), but I don't have any photos on my phone at all and I also don't have my photo stream or cloud sharing. Why is it saying it's taking up space? And what can I do to clear this 114mb?

Are you using iCloud photo library beta.
Are any of your photos actually video.

  • Boot Camp partition deleted but still taking up space?

Specs: Mac OS X 10.5.8, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB memory
Recently procured a used 2008 MacBook Leopard from a relative before going overseas. They also gave me a DVD of Windows 7 Home Premium.
Thing is, I can't seem to partition it in Boot Camp Assistant. It's got 150GB, but only 100GB is actually available.
    1. Boot Camp Assistant gave me:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using BCA again."
    2. Rebooted and held down Cmd/Opt/R keys. Only the HD drive was visible.
    3. Disk Utility. Only one volume: Mac OS Extended (Journaled). So I tried:
    First Aid:
No problems/bugs reported when verifying the disk, so there wasn't anything to repair.
    Erase:
Erased all free space and tried BCA again, still no luck.
    Partition:
Tried adding a new partition and resizing. Tried resizing the original partition. Same result: "Partition failed with the error: No space left on device". Then it just defaulted to the 150-GB sized drive with only 100 GB available.
    Restore:
Tried to restore from the external drive-based backup I made before erasing it the first time. None of the disks could be set as the destination.
I haven't got the install disk or the money to upgrade the OS, so any help would be appreciated!

Well even a good backup program costs something.
Disk Utility is free and can copy the system to another drive (RESTORE TAB)
5.8 is so old you should not be connected to the internet with it probably.
yours is like the 2,999th post of the same error and asking 'what do I do.'
you need contiguous unfragmented free space. Leo 10.5 is not as flexible as later to shrink a partition to help move files to consolidate that free space like 10.6.8 ($20) which is what I would go out and buy.
Carbon Copy Cloner older versions are free/shareware and great for making a bootable backup of your system to another disk drive. Use it!
Not sure what you used or did but to backup and restore you need to use a program that makes bootable backups (you can't just copy files by hand).

  • After running a disk checker, I have 30 gigs showing as used but unaccounted for anywhere, all the files I moved to an external hdd are still taking up space

I recently purchased a mac book air with the 128g SDD. After setting it up with all my desired applications I started to download some large media files. Knowing that I'm working with limited HDD space I hooked up a portable 1TB Drive, formatted it for MAC OS Extended (journaled) and moved all of my large files onto the back up drive. After moving all the files in my downloads folder to the trash, and then emptying the trash the space on the SDD "Macintosh HD" did not change. Currently reading at used 91g, available 29g (as seen in the disk utility program with the Macintosh HD highlighted). To find the 'mystery used space' I ran a program called 'DIsk Inventory X' on their opening screen the program shows a smaller capacity with 84g used and 27g free, running the program adds up the value of all the folders and applications on the HD only to discover their is only 54g's accounted for (this is realistic for the files and applications I currently have installed and intend to carry with me on a daily basis)
So my question is why is my SDD only filing up and not clearing the space I move to trash and empty, at this rate I won't have any space left.

sounds like the drive may be defective. remember that hardrives can crash at any time even if new and the drives in the air books are just really big flash drives. sound like you have an appointment for the genius bar to get it replaced.
i have one more possible fix but requires you download a free app called "OnyX". if you are not famliar with the power of this app, be carefull about what you have it do. hit me back up if you choose to go this route. other wise to the apple store you go my friend

  • Files can't be found, but are still taking up space.

I just downloaded several hour-long podcasts from the web in MP3 format. I added them directly to my iPod Touch via iTunes 9.2.1.5 and they showed up in my music folder.
Well, obviously I wanted them to show up as Podcasts, so like I do with my Audiobooks, I tried changing the Media Kind to "Podcast" and they simply disappeared. They are nowhere to be found on my iPod but I can see that the space they inhabit is still being taken up on my iPod.
I found a couple other threads related to this -- one had no replies, and the other said someone was only able to find them via a search on the iPod. What search? I couldn't find any search option on my iPod Touch.
I've also had a number of other problems with files/podcasts randomly disappearing and then iTunes not allowing me to add them again, leading me to believe there is a landfill of files somewhere that I can't access or delete.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Do iTunes movie rentals stop using drive-space after you view them

Am going on a two week vacation and I want to have as much room as possible for pictures and movies, but I want to watch a rental on the plane. Will the movie make room for my pics without a synch?

Wow that sounds great. Don't forget to rent the movies before you get on the plane and you have a month to watch them or 48  hours once you start to watch. Bon Voyage !

  • Old videos still taking up space

The available space on my iphone has been steadily decreasing even though I have been reducing the amount of stuff I sync with the phone. I just noticed that when I go into settings, it says I have 73 videos on the phone yet when I select videos from the iPod app , it only shows 5 videos. It looks like every video podcast I have ever watched is hidden somewhere inacceable on the phone. Why aren't they showing up in the ipod app? How can I find them, get rid of them, and free up the space?
    thanks
    Joe

Definitely do a reset on your phone and, if that doesn't work, a restore (neither is harmful -- they are benign and you won't lose anything). Then resync and see if that helps.

  • How can i remove videos and music that are not on my ipad mini but are still taking up space and are showing that they are there even after i've deleted them?

how can i remove videos and music that have been deleted from the ipad but are still showing in settings as still being on the ipad?

I believe that I have the same issue with iPad Mini with Retina Display, iOS 8.1. No matter which way I delete videos from my iPad, they will still show as "deleted", yet the space is not cleared up. I tried restore and then a full restore (clean setup as a new iPad) and it still does this to me. I can solve it by doing a restore each and every time I download a video and delete it. Rather frustrating. Has been a problem since day 1 of iOS 8. I'm yet to try the power+home button reset. It may very well work, but I am surprised that a "fresh setup" of an iPad didn't resolve it from ever occurring.

  • User folder deleted but still taking up space

Yesterday the Safari 3.1.1 update somehow managed to delete my user folder. After the restart my entire user folder had gone along with all my settings. I have since recovered my files using Data Rescue and Firewire, but there is now another problem. While summing the contents of Mac HD comes to little under 20gb, finder is telling me I have only 10gb of my 60gb HD free. This is the same amount as before the user folder was deleted. This means I am unable to move any of my recovered files of a friends mac back onto my own. Is there anyway to get the HD to recalculate its free space? And of course, if anyone knows of a simple solution to recover my user folder fairly easily (as the recovered folders using data rescue have all come back unnamed and all need sorting) then that would also be useful!!! But I'm not hopeful on that one...
Just to confirm though, all the files from my user folder are definitely not in finder anywhere. I have searched both manually and using the search bar for both files as they were named originally and with the names they have come back with via data rescue. And the total sum of all the folders in HD are about 10gb less than what was recovered, so they wouldn't fit anyway!
    Thanks

Thanks, I will look at that this evening. In other news... I did a verify disk scan with disk utility and it came back with this
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Performing live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure
    Volume check failed.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
I have been told that i could do something with the leopard disk, but unfortunately that is in another country to me. I am intending to get a new macbook once they are revised so don't really want to spend much, if any, money on this problem if it can be avoided.
    thanks

  • All songs are gone, still taking up space

Hi, just recently my iPod has been acting a bit weird and it has been having trouble connecting to my computer. I plugged it in last night and it failed to show up in iTunes or my Windows Explorer. I left it plugged in just in case it just had to take a while to work. When I woke up this morning and checked it was basically asking me all the questions it asks when you first install the iPod. It was asking me the name of the iPod, whether I wanted the iPod to auto-update the songs onto it from iTunes, and if I wanted to register my iPod. Also, it said there were no songs on it. I was baffled and shut down my computer. After my iPod was disconnected from the Firewire power source from my computer I disconnected it and lo and behold, it also says I have no songs on it. The weird thing is that it still says that out of the 37.1 GB total capacity, I only have 14.3 GB available. This means that all my songs must be on there, but it's just not recognizing them. I tried to use the iPod Updater/Restorer application, but when I plugged my iPod in it said that it couldn't mount the iPod. What do I do?
    Specs:
    Version: 3.1.1
    Model: M9268LL
    Format: Windows
(This is the 40GB 4th Gen iPod. Basically the one that came out before the color ones.)
