Movieclip/Layer Naming Suggestion

Because you can only animate one movieclip per layer on the
timeline. Can we currently or can you (Adobe), make it possible
that in the future, when you create a symbol from a
fill/line/imported image for the first time on a original-unchanged
Layer name (ex. Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 36) That the Layer name
changes to the name of the movieclip?
It would help in my animation productions in finding
movieclip parts on the timeline.

This idea makes pretty good sense for the workflow you've
described, but
it wouldn't always be useful. You might have a single layer
filled with
navigation buttons (a dozen symbols), for example, so you
might want to call
that layer "navigation," even though it contains a dozen
differently-named
symbols. But I do agree, for what you've described, it could
be helpful.
What you're after can be done with something called JSFL,
which is a
programming language (much like JavaScript) that lets you
automate the
authoring tool. Granted, to use it, you have to be
comfortable with
programming, but it's certainly an avenue. And even if this
isn't something
you might develop yourself, you might find a 3rd party
extension already
built.

  • Edit in Photoshop... - should retain filename for layer naming

    SUGGESTION
Lightroom / rightclick / Edit With / Edit in Photoshop...
This renders the image in LR and then opens it in photoshop, which is fine,
HOWEVER, I HATE, how it flattens the image to a locked "Background" named layer. I'd much prefer the file name to be with the document in Photoshop.
Mostly because having file names is important for retouching or various other types of compositing.
When you open mulitple files into Layers from LR, each layer retains the file name.
I would like to open a single image and have it retain the file name.
OR PERHAPS... include a command that opens an image from lightroom and puts it into the current active Photoshop document, which would be a great way to add additional images to a comp
    Thanks

  • Naming Suggestions for Albums

I just had surgery and so have a few weeks to sit at home. I would like to redo all of my albums in iPhoto (about 30,000 pix in three libraries).
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good album naming system? I have used "Thanksgiving 2005" for example in the past but I haven't been consistent. Before I start I thought I would see if any of you have found a surefire system that helps with sorts, etc.
    Thanks for your time!
    Denny

I probably have as many photos as you if not more, but I do not use keywords. Also, since many of my photos are scanned-in snapshots, the dates on many are the date of the scan, not the actual date. It was too daunting a task to redate them all.
My system is purely chronologic. I use iPhotoBuddy to create several separate libraries. My first one contains photos from the 1890's through 1978. It happens to be labeled 1920-1978 because that was the earliest date of my photos until we found the 1800s ones . Each of my libraries contains a maximum of about 6000 photos. I chose that number because the prior versions of iPhoto would get sluggish with more than that, and that size is not too large to work with. I now have 10 libraries; some are just one year, some are 2-3, and some are about 5 years of photos. In the earlier years, without digital cameras, the total number of photos for a year is way less than the current year with many digital photos.
I use albums to keep my photos organized for each year. My main reason for this is that I scanned in the photos at different times. Most of them came from our photo albums......one area of my life that has always been carefully organized. However, I would then run across some photos in picture frames, or other places and had to add them into the proper chronologic position. In the Events, and in the previous Film Rolls, the position of the photos cannot be moved as they can in albums.
I use albums to place each photo in its proper position. When I have finished with the positioning of all the photos for the year, I then number them. (I don't put the exact dates on them; I know they go from Jan to Dec, and from the content it is fairly easy to identify when they were taken. I really don't care if a particular photo was from March 4 or 16....I know it was after Valentine's Day and before Easter!). My numbering system is also very simple. I use 3 or 4 digits depending on how many total photos are in the album. For example, for 1985, my first three photos are: 1985-001, 1985-002, 1985-003. For 2007, my first three photos are 2007-0001, 2007-0002, 2007-0003. Numbering them consecutively keeps them in order when I export them to an external drive as backup or burn them to disks, so I would not have to resort them.
I use my albums when I make my iMovies for each year, so it is crucial for me to have the photos in the correct order chronologically. I make DVDs of each year....some years need 4-6 DVDs for all the activities, photos and videos, but some years are less eventful and I can get all our photos and videos on one DVD.
I do keep my photos in Events, labeled as to what they are, but I use that just for viewing the photos I want to see or show someone. I have a pretty good sense as to which photos are where, so I haven't really needed to make a search for specific photos except one time for a friend's anniversary. When I initially began to scan in my photos, I did put titles on them, but that became tedious and repetitious. I found I wanted to use the same titles for different photos of the same people or places. Keywords were not a part of iPhoto then. Now, my scanner just numbers the photos, so I have numbers on those and the digital ones. I do add descriptions to many of my photos, but I should add keywords as well. I may get to that after I finish my iMovie/DVD projects. I have about 10 more family movies to do first!
Whatever system you chose, it has to be one that works for you. My dad (on a PC)keeps his photos on two different drives and put them into folders by person. He is sorry now that he did it that way because he can't find anything. I helped him resort his more recent photos by date, since he now thinks that might be a better way of organizing. I tried to get him to consider how he thinks of the photos, and his response was that he liked the combination of people and years, so that is what he is using. I wouldn't like it, but it is working for him.

  • AE CC 2014 Error upon closing project "...layer named '10' is missing or does not exist...

Upon closing (or quitting) an After Effects CC 2014 project I'd been working on for several days I'm presented with the following error message dialog boxes 39 times:
In this comp I've masked the same piece of video into 38 triangles to create a transition effect.  I named those layers "1" to "39" for organization.  There are another 39 layers (the flip side of those triangles that come into view when I rotate the main triangles), and the masks of those layers are pick-whipped to the corresponding primary 39 layers.
Despite this error message, nothing is visibly wrong in the project.  The video that's the source of those layers is NOT missing.  I can see it.  It's a 1920x1080 Apple Pro Res 422 Quicktime, sitting in the same folder as a bunch of other clips.  If it WAS missing wouldn't I see the color bars placeholder?  t tried reimporting the clip and option-dragging it back into those layers, but I get the same message.
Upon opening the project I get this message, 39 times:
Again, the software is apparently confused, thinking that something is missing when it's not.
So is this very complex project corrupted now?  That would be a drag.  At least it still seems to work, I just have to hit "OK" on these dialogs 78 times to open and close the project.  I was expecting more for $50/month.
    Thanks.

We found what the culprits were, but I don't know why they'd cause these error messages.
To recap, I have a piece of HD video that I've duplicated 39 times with a different triangular mask on each layer to re-create the whole frame (moving the anchor points of each layer as needed).  The idea is that I then rotate those layers in 3D somewhat randomly, revealing a different video clip on the back side.  To create the "B-side" video for the back sides I duplicated the original 39 faceted layers and parented each to its corresponding "A-side" piece.   I created some opacity expressions to make the A-sides disappear halfway through their rotation with the B-sides appearing at the same point.
My plan was to vary the mask shapes on the A-sides to create variations on the transitions, so I enabled an expression on the masks and pick-whipped the mask shapes on the B-sides to their A-side counterparts.  That seems to be the problem.  Here's the expression (applied to layer 26B):
    thisComp.layer("26").mask("Mask 1").maskPath
I repeated this for all 39 B-side layers.  Then I duplicated that comp and inserted new video into the transition.  At some point some part of the software decided some layers were missing or something, creating the above error messages.  The comps still worked as designed; it was just error messages that I had to repeatedly dismiss.  Once I deleted all of these mask expressions the error messages stopped.
Before deleting those expressions we tried renaming the layers (1-39) so they were unique within each comp (Train1, Rail1, etc) but that didn't work.
    Feels like a bug.

  • Macro/script needed for automatic layer naming

Hi. I'm new to the forums, but I did a search for this and found something similar, but not quite right. I'm looking for a macro (that I've used in the past, so I know it exists) that will unlock and name the background layer after the filename AS YOU OPEN the file in Photoshop. For example: I'm in Bridge/Finder, and I drag a file named "istock123456.jpg" into Photoshop. As PS opens the file in its own window, instead of the only layer being locked and called "Background", it will be unlocked and called "istock123456.jpg". I've used this macro before at my old job, and it's extremely helpful for referencing back to original files when you need to.
Can anyone help with this? As I mentioned, I found a similar discussion on here, but all that script does is create a new empty layer with the filename on top of the background layer, and you have to manually run it as it's not automatic like I'm talking about here.
    Thanks in advance.

    This should do it...
    activeDocument.activeLayer = activeDocument.layers[activeDocument.layers.length-1];
    if(activeDocument.activeLayer.isBackgroundLayer) activeDocument.activeLayer.name = activeDocument.name;
Set up Scripts Event Manager to call this script on Open Document.

  • Naming suggestion

I'm working to setup a basic combined tier cluster using 5 server instances across
two physical machines. The plan is to have one Admin server, the proxy server
and one managed server on physical machine A and two managed servers on physical
machine B. My question is - do you recommend any naming conventions for the servers
              within a cluster?

FWIW - Yes, I suggest naming them "server" + last portion of IP address, as
              in:
              server101
              server102
              server103
              server104
It makes building .sh scripts easier.

  • Physical Layer Naming Convention

    Hi,
I am trying to setup my physical layer and see reference to naming them properly. When I look at the sample sales examples, I see they are using A01, A02, etc.
But, I others are indicating I should name them:
    fact_sales
    dim_customers
Anyone have some good direction on how to setup a proper naming convention for the physical layer.
And should I just using this naming convention for the alias tables?
    thanks,
    Kathy

    Use Like
    SALES_F and CUSTOMERS_D
    _F for Fact
    _D for Dimensions
    All in UPPER case
For Alias use CLOSING DATE (W_DAY_D)
    Shud be useful

  • PSD CS3 layer naming issue

    Hello.
When I click on a new layer and start typing, the curser/focus will go somewhere else on the screen after only a few seconds. So basically I must continue to click on the layer to name it, enter 1 or 2 letters and then repeat until I finished naming it. If I try to type the letter "s" for instance, it will select the clone stamp tool. Anyone know what's going on?
    Thanks,

Go to the layers palette options and uncheck Expand New Effects.

  • Dual Layer DVD suggestions?

Well, I just caught my knee on my dvd tray and snapped it off. "Kneedless" to say, I'm not real happy! But I was thinking of getting a dual layer anyway. I scanned past posts and it seems the Pioneer 110 had made some users happy. Are you still happy? Does it work with idvd? I mainly use toast but occasionally use idvd. Is there anything to watch for or weird problems? Anybody have a suggestion for a different model drive? I'm not as interested in saving money as I am getting a reliable drive that will work with idvd and toast.
Thanks for any feedback and/or tips!
PS I guess I should have said that this is for a G5 running 10.3.9. I am currently using toast 6 but will upgrade to 7 with the new burner.

Go with the NEC 3550 or the Pioneer 110. Both can be found at www.newegg.com for around $40. If I remember correctly, the NEC may burn CDs a bit faster than the Pioneer, but that's about it. I have 7 NEC 3540s in a DVD copy tower as well as a pair of Pioneers in my G4... Could not be happier with either of them. While Both are extremely well made drives, I personally prefer the Pioneer.
You would have to look really hard to find DVD burners which aren't dual layer; these are, but I have never burned dual layer discs before. Should work fine...
You may need to set your sleep prefs to "never sleep" if you get problems, but then again maybe not. There can be different problems with different machines.
You will probably have to install patchburn ( do a google), which is a really easy to install utility which merely tells OS X to acknowledge the drive as compatible. If you do not, the drive will only work with 3rd party apps. if you do, it will work flawlessly with all Apple apps.

  • Layer Naming in PSE 5.0

Is there a way to set a default in PSE 5.0 somewhere to name layers by file name rather than by Layer 1, Layer 2, etc. I am using PSE 5.0 to do digital scrapbooking. Each time I add a digital element to a layout (by opening the file and then sliding it over into my layout using the move tool), I would like the layer name to default to the name of the file of that digital element. This way, I will easily be able to keep track of all the elements used in a layout to give proper credit to the designers who made the digital elements if I decide to post my layout in a web site gallery. I do know that I could edit each layer name as it is created, just wondered if PSE could just do it for me.

If you use File->Place to open your elements, the layer will take on the
    name of the file.
Or, if you drag the photo or element up from the photo bin (beneath your
layout), it will use the file name as the layer name.
Here's what I do: I have my layout as my currently active image, choose
the move tool, then click and drag the element I want from the photo bin
up to my layout. It always takes on the file name.

  • Layer Naming in Adobe Draw

Why can't you tap and hold to rename a layer in Adobe Draw? Why have names on layers at all if all the layers are the same name?
You know people want layers, you support them when you use "Send to Illustrator" but you don't give the user the ability to rename the layers? They all have the same "Draw Layer" name for what reason? This is absurd behavior.
One one hand you allow a user to organize and compose with layers but won't let them change a title to define the layer to make the organization flawless. This is a gap in logic. Sloppy dev IMO.
Then again maybe you can rename the layer but you've hidden the ability so much it's not intuitive enough to figure out?
But like most questions in this forum it'll go unanswered I'm sure.
The whole point of a forum is to find answers, what I tend to discover every time I come her is just lame excuses and vague promises.
And why is development on this app so slow? You should have had this function and many more missing features added back in already. This tells me that Adobe is either going to axe this app like they did Adobe Ideas or the staff resources have their attention divided. Either way functionality and support is at best half-backed. But I digress.

This is by a long margin my most desired feature for Adobe Illustrator Draw. It seems so basic. Here's the other threads I've seen that include the same request:

  • How do I export AI layers as flash movieclips

    hello;
I have an AI CS4 file with all of the countries of the world, each on it's own layer, named according to the country's name..
My goal is to have each country in flash as an individual movieclip.

Or you could just go to File>Export.Flash>SWF>AI Layers to SWF Frames or AI Layers to SWF Symbols

  • How do I copy parts of layers from one AI doc into a new AI doc and keep/create same layer names?

How do I copy PARTS of layers containing many objects from one CS5 AI (v.15.0.2) doc into a new CS5 AI doc and keep/create the same layer names?
To start with, I have one fairly complex AI document with 100 layers,  with several hundred items in each layer. For example, one layer named "Stars" contains  400 separate stars (not grouped), another layer named "Crosses" contains 300 separate crosses, and a 3rd layer named "Text" contains 200 separate words (not outlined).
If I select, by marqueeing a section of the image/artboard, some (but not all) of the individual items contained in the several layers, then  paste that selection into a new CS5 AI doc, I cannot get them to  create new layers of the same name. Instead they go into one general layer (e.g. "Layer 101") as a jumble of discrete, but unorganized objects (no layers or sublayers). In other words, I have lost the 3 main layers from which I selected a bunch of objects.
Checking "Paste Remembers Layers" has no effect on this result. In fact "Paste Remembers Layers" does not remember layers at all. Only if I select ALL the items in the several layers will it paste those layers by those names into the new doc (or create new layers of the same names).
Of course it is a COLOSSAL waste of time copying the ENTIRE document, then pasting the WHOLE thing into the new doc (with layers retained), then deleting the parts I DON'T need, so please don't suggest that as the solution.

No Monica, nothing in Plug-ins other than the standard installed items (extensions, filters, formats, etc.). No 3rd-part clipboard extension on my computer that I'm aware of, either. All frustratingly basic. And my other CS5 Adobe programs appear to work well, at least to the extent that I am familiar with them.
So, from what I can tell of the various comments (thanks to all of you), am I correct in thinking that it seems I can't, in fact, do what all of you can do (that is, copy some objects from some layers in one doc and paste into another doc preserving those same layers by name and organization, and each containing the correct objects from each original layer)?
If so, that solves half my issue - "is it supposed to be possible to do it"; leaving just the other half - "why can't I do it too".
I'll get those screenshots made and posted later just in case I haven't adequately described the issue, or y'all haven't understood it.
