Movies can't be played on apple monitor - error about HDCP authorization

I have a MacPro 2.66GHz dual Intel with a 24" apple display screen.
All of a sudden I can't play any iTunes purchased movies on my display. I get the message "movie cannot be played because a display that is not authorized to play protected movies is connected...not HDCP authorized".
It must have happened after a software update. This are MY LEGALLY PURCHASED MOVIES from iTunes. I have an apple TV and can watch them fine from there or an iPod, just not sitting at my computer. I called apple support and they had no ideas. Ran system check on hard drive, repaired permissions, etc and still no change. Everything else on computer works great. Need help. Why does iTunes think an non authorized display is connected when I'm running a fairly new 24" display (2 years old)?

You pretty much have to downgrade Quicktime to 7.5.5. I'm on the phone with Apple Tech Support and will give an update when I get it.

I know this works because I did it and was able to watch the new HD tv shows. Then, I downloaded Quicktime 7.6 and installed it using the installer. I COULD NOT watch the new HD tv shows. Then, I reverted Quicktime back to 7.5.5 and am now able to watch them again.
I agree, Apple needs to fix this. Until they do, I'll stay with 7.5.5.

If you originally downloaded it to a computer, yes. If you originally downloaded it to an iOS device, probably not; if you want to try anyway, use the Transfer Purchases function in iTunes.

Never mind I fixed it. Just in case anyone else has this problem, after you reinstall iTunes you have to delete all your old music, and if you have iTunes match all the songs you have saved on itunes match will display and you just have to download them to your Macbook.

Hopefully you can get past the kernel panic screen, there are several
ways to attempt to do that, however if the issue is hardware, a reinstall

Can I daisy chain 30" apple monitor to thunderbolt HD on macbook pro?

I have a 30" apple monitor plugged into this adapter: http://foliovision.com/2009/12/apple-dual-dvi-mini-displayport-adapter-mb571z that in turn is plugged into the thunderbolt port as well as one USB port on my 2011 macbook pro i7.
I want to buy a Lacie Big5 thunderbolt RAID system, but I only have one thunderbolt port. will i be able to daisy chain the monitor to the thunderbolt RAID?

I don't want to assume that it will work because it a little bit different on the Retina. All of the 2012 line of MacBook’s utilize the same thunderbolt controller which does support 2 displays and 4 10Gbit/s data (even the MacBook air 11" can support 2 external monitors and it's own display). But i think that the controller is hardwired for each port meaning each port only has 2 10Gbit/s data and 1 display. I haven't been able to confirm this because I don't have 2 thunderbolt displays and i was wondering if anyone has tried this. The reason why I ask is because I'm doing research on all of the new MacBook’s and their Thunderbolt controller.

I'm not aware of any particular limit, but I suppose there could be one.
Rentals are streamed and not persistantly stored locally.

.mpeg4 and.mov videos won't play on apple tv

My home videos are both .mov and .mpeg4 files and when we try to play them on our apple tv the sounds plays fine but the screen is green and frozen.

Neither the ATV1 nor the ATV2 will play just any (or all) .mov or .mpeg4 files. Both the format and the resolution must conform to the ATV specs (which can be found on Apple's website).
Try converting one of the problem files using QuickTime and use the Apple TV preset.

Rented movie on PC iTunes, play on Apple TV

I rented and downloaded a movie (Argo) from iTunes on my Win 7 pc.
Later that day we watched the movie using Apple TV and Home Sharing.
So I went to Computers on Apple TV. Selected my PC, found the movie and started it.
I'm pretty sure we have done this in the past.
The movie would not start. I just got the spinning icon at the start of the status bar.
I restarted the Apple TV. Tried again. Same thing.
Restarted again. This time as soon as it started to play I hit Pause.
I let it sit there for a minute or so thinking it would buffer some things up in the Apple TV.
Then started the play. It worked fine from there on.
I have an Airport Express. Both devices are on that wireless network.
We have two iPads, an iPhone, and printer on that same wireless network.
But they were all idle at this time. All devices show Excellent connection in the Airport Utility.
Any ideas what was going on here? I thought that since the movie was downloaded on my pc
that the Apple TV would just get the movie from my pc over the wireless connection.
Which should be pretty fast. Faster than downloading it over the web.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Downloaded Prometheus, won't play on Apple TV, says computer needs authorization, but it is authorized. Plays on the iMac though.

The error msg is bogus. In my case, the problem is that the AppleTV (2nd gen) cannot play the 720p HD version.
iTunes actually downlads both HD and SD versions. I deleted the the entry from my iTunes libary listing, but kept the file by NOT moving to trash. I then added just the SD version. It plays correctly.
But I paid for HD to view on my TV, so I am not totally happy about this. HD is of no interest on my smaller computer screens...
This looks like the HD version is not encoded correctly.

How do I get rented movies from MacBook to appear on Apple TV?

I can buy movies and they appear fine, but when I rent a movie on MacBook for play on Apple TV, nothing appears in Apple TV under Movies. (And I've updated the firmware on Apple TV).

You may well be right, the opening paragraph seems to support you in the sense that you can watch them on the tv, but the whole issue of transferring it to the tv is a little vague.
In essence it may well be that simply watching the movie via streaming is what most people will want to do anyway, if that is indeed how it works.
If transferring is allowed then I assume this would be a straight transfer and not a sync, since only one device can have the movie at a time.
In my situation my goal would be to rent from the mac and stream it to my tv's since I have more than one of them. If however I have to transfer it to watch it, this then causes a problem. If we assume for the time being that movies can be transferred to the tv but not the other way around, I have no way to move the movie back from tv #1 to itunes to send it to tv #2.
I'm now less certain than I was but I'm still inclined to think that we won't be able to transfer rented content from itunes to the tv, but I have to wonder if this will really be an issue for most of us.

My rented moive will not play on apple tv

I have rented movies before through Aplle TV but now it is not playing. It tells me to go to the settings menu and select downloads, then check for downloads. But there is nothing in setting to do this.
There is a section to check for purhcased movies but this does not work. My interent seems to be working fine.

I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. Playback of rented movies is somewhat different than for purchased content. For the most part, rented movies can only be played back on the original device that it was rented from unless it was rented from a computer, and for computers transfers have other limitations. TV using Apple TV
Watch your movie on the device you used to rent it. If you rented the movie on your computer, you can move it to an iOS device or Apple TV (1st generation). To do this, connect the devices and sync using USB. When you move a rented movie from your computer, it will disappear from your computer’s iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as much as you want, but you can only have it on one device at a time.
If you rented the movie on your iOS device or Apple TV, you can’t move it to any other device.
