'Movies' file type clarity?

I have a 5G iPod. I have an TV.
I want the optimal video conversion for my TV, and may also make additional optimised conversions for the iPod.
They all just sit in 'Movies' in iTunes. Other than a naming convention - tedious & time consuming - is there any way to separate the file types and clarify their intended destinations/ utilisations?

If File Type Associations are set properly in the Bridge preferences, the default setting can be made to open files in PS CS3, with CS4 installed. This works from within CS3 and CS4. However, it sometimes happens that one is in the Finder, and the default remains PS CS4, however much one tries (via File-Get Info) to modify the default system-wide settings so that these files open in CS3. In any event, a bit invasive. Of course, if I could get comfortable with the Adjustment Layer Panels, all this would be unnecessary, but for the moment, there appear to be too many clicks, and it is going to take some time, so I don't want to burn bridges. Perhaps there is also some ambiguity in my mind as to what the pointing finger in the new Curves dialogue box, much like a tolling bell, is trying to tell me.

HT1363 what movie file types will work on a iPod classic 80GB?

I am trying to download movies onto my ipod, they are in the library but I get an error saying wrong file type. Do they have to have an extention and if so, what is the acceptable flie?

Are these downloads from the iTunes Store? If so, it sounds like you are trying to sync the HD version of the video. You should try to download the Standard Definition copy instead and sync that to your device as HD content is not compatible with the Nano. See here for more information:

To prevent HD versions from being downloaded in the future head to the iTunes Store, click the Purchased link, and then select Movies/TV Shows and remove the tick mark next to Download HD when available. You should be able to download the SD version now from under this same page.

Quicktime, Movie File Types & CandyBar

I have just three questions:
1) With the new upgrade to OS X Mavericks, it seems as though Quicktime is extra picky about converting certain file types when I open them, particulary avi's......which used to open with no problem in earlier versions of OS X. Is this a quirk that I'm going to have to deal with for now, or is there a codec I can install to rectify this?
2) When listing different file types in Finder in OS X Mavericks, Windows Media Files (.wmv) are being listed as documents, and not movies (see below) This wasn't the case in OS X Mountain Lion. Is this another quirk or is there something I can do to have the .wmv files listed correctly?
3) Any word on when CandyBar will be updated for OS X Mavericks? If not, is there another way to change the look of the default folder icon? I already know how to change the icons for specific folders, but CandyBar helped me change the look of the default folder icon, thereby changing the look of ALL folders on my Mac.

Quicktime files can be MPEG-4 video, and should be
transferable to your iPod.

when i click get info it says the kind/type is a quicktime movie file.....i was jus mainly wondering why some podcast videos have quicktime video file, while others have the mpeg-4 video file...its almost like and OCD (obssesive complusive disorder) thng for me.....but as long as they can still transfer to the ipod i should be fine....

What file types are playable by iPhone? I've tried MP4, AVI and MOV and none are able to be copied over.

With the new QuickTime, you can Export to iPhone! There are expert settings you can use that will make it look a little better, but this is fast and easy, and it works. The files are pretty small too.

Problem with .mov file type in premier elements 10 on windows 7

My canaon power shot elph movie uses .mov (apple file) which I sent to PE10. When I try to play it in PE10 only audio plays, there is no sink between audio and video. If I move the marker under the vidio the vidio will follow the mark playing. I am on window 7 pc. Any ideas? There is a audo vidil link in CLIP, but if is not hi-lited so I can activate it. I want to do some editing and then burn a DVD to play on my TV. Help!!!!

There is an epidemic of display issues targeting specifically Premiere Elements 10 users whose computer use a NVIDIA video card. For now, the answer is to roll back the video card driver version rather than to assure that you have the latest video card driver installed on your computer. Please check out the following thread in this regard and determine if any this applies to your situation.

Once we rule this factor out, we can move on to other troubleshooting schemes.
What John T. Smith has asked is do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer with your Premiere Elements 10. If you do, the latest version is 7.7.4. You should be able to find confirming information on that in Help Menu/About QuickTime in the opened QuickTime. That is not a codec number. It is the version number (latest version) for the QuickTime program on which Premiere Elements is very dependent.
As for codec, in this case, the question being asked is what is the video compression in your file that has the .mov file extension. If you do not know and do not have access to a video properties reader (such as MediaInfo), perhaps we could get the needed information from the brand/model/settings information for the camera that was used to record the video.

Best movie file type

I am wanting to rip all of my dvds onto a hard drive that I will leave connected to my TV so that I no longer need to keep changing discs every time I want to watch something new and live in fear of scratching and ruining the discs.
However, I am not sure what file type I should be creating or the codecs I should be using (video and audio). If the file type isnt supported by the TV, I will play the file on my comp and use the TV as an external display, so dont worry about that.
Could someone please tell me the specs of the files I should be creating (and a decent app to use as well)?
I have googled this but can't find anything very good. If anyone knows of a site explaining this stuff, please let me know.

Does anyone know a converter from the new iTunes TV/movie file type to one that will work on my 5th generation iPod video?

I just tried to load some new TV shows from my iTunes onto my 5th generation iPod video and it says the video format is not supported. I currently have dozens of TV shows and movies on the iPod, I just wanted to put some new stuff on there. So I need to know if there is anyway of converting the new iTunes video format into one that will run on my 5th generation iPod.

When you drag a movie from the Media Browser to the Time lIne in GarageBand, you will see a pop-up "Extracting Audio".
The Movie and the audio file will appear in separate tracks. You can copy the audio region from the sound track to a different track to keep it safe and then hide the Movie track.

Move file types over a certain date (beginner)

I'm trying to move all pictures over a definable date to a certain folder.
Here's my script so far -

I have copied elements of that, as I'm not really sure why / when you're meant to use variables that have the $_Text format rather than the $Text... I don't really get that.
Apparently the path created by this is null... But I don't really know why.

##you need to get an array of strings stored in your variable...the select-object can be put in above pipeline as well
$oldestfileimport = $oldestfileimport | selct-object -expandproperty Fullname
move-item -Path $oldestFileImport -Destination "C:\users\USER NAME\pictures"
I tested the above in PowerShell v3 it works.
If you look at the help for Move-Item then you will see the -Path parameter expects an array of strings as the input...whereas earlier in your code it is the collection of System.IO.FileInfo Objects.

Why can't I change movie file type

Hey all,
I'm running iTunes12 on PC, and I have some mp4 movies I would like to put in the library! I added the file to the library and it goes straight to home videos, which is fine as I'm used to just right clicking and clicking on get info and changing that to "movie" so it adds to my movies library. Only problem is that now, all the information that I used to be able to change is greyed out and I can't change it or anything... not even the name. I really would like to find out what's causing this! I already checked the file and it's not read-only. HELP

Converting Movie File Types to be Compatible with iTunes

The videos I'm trying to import are .avi files. I know that iTunes needs .mov or .mp4, so is there any way to convert them to be compatible with iTunes?

This is how I do it:
Open iMovie and import the .avi file
Go to Share and select iPod
There are probably other ways but this one works just fine for my needs

Besides playing DVD movies, Front Row does not really "play" anything. It will open iTunes in the background and play your music. It will open iPhoto in the background and play your pictures. If you choose the "Movies" section, it will open the QuickTime Player in the background and play your movies. So, as long as you can open and play your movies manually with the QuickTime Player, you can access them in Front Row.

Trying to understand different movie files

Fairly new to working with movies and movie files on my Macbook. In the finder under all movies, I have several different file types from converting VHS tapes, downloads and quick movies taken with a digital camera. I have mp4, avi, eyetv, mov and dv file types. Is there a tutorial on all these different types and how to work with them more easily under one file type. I'd like to be able to edit them all, possibly post them to social networking sites and save to DVD eventually.
Today, I was trying to save a DVD of some of old home movies to the computer hard drive and couldn't figure it out. It plays no problem with iDVD and I was able to create a dmg file from disk utility to try and save it but am stuck at what to do next. Several of the file formats you mention are basically 'containers' that can contain video content compressed with many different CODECS.
DV is a well defined format that should be supported by the iLife applications.
eyeTV files need to be converted by the Elgato eyeTV software into a format that can be used by the iLife applications (there is an option under Export in that software).
Most MOV files should be supported, since it's basically an Apple 'container'.
AVI is mostly a Windows 'container' and some of the used CODECS work with a Mac, others don't.
MP4 files come in many CODEC 'flavors'; not all of which are easily edited.
One useful application for converting 'problem' video files into something that can be used in the iLife applications is the free MPEG Streamclip that can be found at http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html .
It might be easier for us to help you if you write about one problem file at a time; then we can ask questions specific to that format.

Trouble exporting any mov files into H264 after adding K-Lite codec pack into Windows XP SP3.

I have QuickTime 7.7 (1680.34) installed. I have used it extensively and exported the video separate from the audio and extracted and used filters and it has all worked great with all of the other codecs I have had installed. It even worked great after I recently installed this K-Lite codec pack that actually saved files in a *.hdmov file type and I was able to view them with the Media Player Classic .... (I have Windows XP update 3) and see what I could do over there and then go back to saving them as *.mov file types and work in QuickTime Pro. And still export them relatively fast to their latest H264 format.
I gave more file types to the Media Player Classic. I think along the line of the just the *.3g2 and *.mp4 and took them away from QuickTime but still keeping the *.mov, *.qt and *.mqv file types .... and that is when I think everything must have changed. all of a sudden I can not save any *.hdmov files and the export process in QuickTime takes longer than forever.
I thought that I had reconfigured Media Player Classic back to its default ....
and it should all go back to being how it was.
Is there some Direct Show filter or codec that upsets QuickTime Pro ... that I might have not reset back to what it was?
Any codec help would be much appreciated.
This is what the K-Lite site says in one instance about H264:
If the video that you are playing contains H.264 video, then you could try using another decoder. The codec pack by default uses ffdshow for decoding H.264 video. This is a free and open-source decoder. Other decoders exist that have better performance as ffdshow. They should give you smoother playback, specially if you have a dual-core or quad-core processor.
Alternative H.264 decoders are:
CoreAVC. This decoder is unfortunately not available for free.
DivX H.264 decoder. This decoder is available for free as part of the DivX Bundle. Tip: disable everything in the bundle except the H.264 decoder.
ffmpeg-mt. This is an experimental multi-threaded version of the libavcodec decoding library, which is used by ffdshow. You can select ffmpeg-mt as decoder in ffdshow video decoder configuration.
MPC DXVA H.264 decoder. This is an internal decoder of Media Player Classic Homecinema. It uses your graphics card to perform most of the decoding process, resulting is a very low CPU usage. You can enable this decoder though: MPC Options -> Internal Filters. Note: this decoder has some specific requirements.
I downloaded the DivX bundle and will pull out that codec. I bought the CoreAVC for $13 but Norton said it was a risky file when I downloaded it ... (I have a question into the site about that) and I will try the ffmpeg-mt codec as well as see what they say about the last one. I will also try to undo everything I did that happened I guess before QuickTime started to export so slow that it is not even worth it to try and convert a mov file into H264.
Sorry so long ... I just was trying to lay out the things I have attempted, will attempt to try and improve the situation.

I decided to do a clean install, a fresh new installation of windows and all its updates, I didn't get the option of
install SP1 yet.
After that I only installed Catalyst drivers: 11.5 and Realtek HD audio drivers, all downloaded on May 24 2011.
Then latest FFDShow and MPC-HC to test, both x64 versions Nothing else installed.
Only a fresh copy of windows with its updates and those mentioned drivers.
To my surprise, it happened a gain.
It still crashes after a while when playing MKV videos.
It's weird, because it doesn't happen with avi's or mp4's.
So, there must be something wrong with one of windows updates that creates this windows FREEZE.
Also there is no possibility to find out what error it is in "Event Viewer" as nothing gets recorded there. Anyone could
advise?
