Movies for AppleTV

Besides iTunes, is there any other seller for AppleTV-ready movies? iTunes is fine but the selection is rather limited.

Considering that movies purchased through the iTunes store are copy protected with Apple's own encryption scheme I think it's unlikely that you will be able to find another source. Movies from other sources such as Amazon's Unbox service are also copy protected using Microsoft's encryption scheme so I doubt that you could convert them to Apple TV compatible m4v files.
There are other threads in this forum dealing with the ripping and converting of DVDs, so you might want to look around.

  • How do I manging multiple copies of movies for AppleTV and iPod in iTunes?

I do not have an AppleTV yet, but I am considering getting one. I was wondering how those who have both an iPod and ATV manage the syncing of Movies that may have different resolutions?
If I want to have the same movie on ATV and my iPod I would need two copies in iTunes at different resolutions, correct? At least when I look at the iTunes export in iMovie it shows I can have a higher resolution for the ATV than the iPod.
So, how do you manage the auto syncing of these multiple copies so that they aren't all copied to both devices? iTunes doesn't have good Movie management as far as sub-folders, etc. I would like iTunes to treat these copies as one movie and only sync the appropriate resolution for the device.
I also notice that multiple copies then show up in FrontRow as well. It would be nice if only the highest resolution would show up.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Just create 2 different playlists like
    Movie-ATV
    Movie-iPod
Put those video files with higher resolution on playlist Movie-ATV
Put those video files with lower resolution on playlist Movie-iPod
in iTunes Preferences choose your ATV only to sync the 1st movie playlist - and your iPod only to sync the 2nd one.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

  • Size/time limit for AppleTV movie files?

Scenario: I have a few hundred iMovie projects that I want to convert to AppleTV movies. My first project was just under two hours, and it converted fine. The second project was just under three hours total (33GB .DV file), and it crashed at 99% completion on two separate tries, giving me a cryptic error message (15+ hours processing time each attempt -- aargh). I am using the latest version of QuickTime Pro to convert the projects, and not running anything else during the conversions.
Right now the only solution that seems to work is to split anything over 2 hours into two parts, which seems kind of pointless and diminishes the advantage of the whole AppleTV concept in the first place. Granted most of the projects are around 2 hours, so most of the time it won't be an issue, just on the longer iMovies.
Anyone know if there is a size/time limit to files that you can convert? Would it be better to import the .DV files into iTunes and try to convert them there instead? Or is there a way to do it from iMovie (I am using the original iMovie HD version from a few years back). Thanks.

Thanks Winston & Alley Cat for your insights -- I figured I would just do a straight QT conversion to the proper specs and did manage to find it by digging around a bit. In Export(Share) / QuickTime / Expert Settings there is a preset for AppleTV buried deep in there.
Sorry, I feel like a bonehead for not being able to locate this option earlier. I thought QuickTime Pro was one of the few apps that could only do this conversion, thinking that my version of iMovie HD (circa 2006) was too old to have the AppleTV preset. (Must have been added during one of the QuickTime updates.)
Anyways, success to report. I tried re-converting the file (2 hours 47 minutes length) and it worked this time. The total conversion time was actually quite a bit faster than QT Pro plus it takes one less step now. I don't know why it is so much faster than QT Pro, but it compressed to the right specs H.264 AAC codec and aspect ratio.
BTW, I really, really like my AppleTV. Not perfect, but it sure is cool and everyone who comes over and sees it is kind of blown away by what this little box can do.

I have the same issue, to temporarily fix it go to Settings > General > Restart.  When it restarts the movie should play.  You have to do this for each movie for the most part.

  • Export for AppleTV - Settings messed up?

I have done it this way before (at least I thought this is how I did it):
File - Export - Using Quicktime Conversion - Format (Apple TV) -- name it and go...
Then drag this file to iTunes, and all is great... I can watch it on my iPhone or my AppleTV.
Last week I messed around with different export settings trying to get a short video small enough to email.
Now when I do the File-Export-etc to get a video into iTunes, the video's aspect ratio is messed up - it looks like it's squishing the 16:9 video into 4:3 - as if I have somehow messed up the preset for AppleTV.
My normal process is that I export 1 for iTunes to watch on my AppleTV, and I export 1 (File-Export-Quicktime Movie (self contained)) to keep as a "master" to burn DVDs, etc if I ever need to.
The "master" is in the correct aspect ratio, so I don't think it's something in the project - it won't play back on my computer, but that is another whole discussion, that I think is computer power related - see https://discussions.apple.com/message/16176561#16176561 if you want more info on that part.
How can I verify the settings that the AppleTV preset is using? Or should I be doing it another way?

    anyone?

  • Are there fewer movies for rent, pushing purchasing?

Why are there fewer movies for rent via itunes on my AppleTV? Movies that are available for rent thru other services (windows, amazon, etc) are only available for sale in itunes. I don't want to purchase movies, I want to rent them as I previously have done for the past 2 years with my AppleTV. Anyone know what's going on?

I think this is a better question for the iTunes forums (as opposed to the ATV forums) since it's more specifically an iTunes question.

Fix for AppleTV photo slide show music stopping after abut 20 minutes?

Just ran another series of tests ... I am now convinced that AppleTV's slideshow/screensaver is broken.
Too often it will 'get stuck' on one photo for minutes then show no photo and finally move on; in fact it is doing it right now.
I don't ever remember seeing this occur before the last upgrade.

  • Ideas for AppleTV firmware?

I was wondering if there was anywhere we can submit ideas for AppleTV firmware.  I have digitized my large DVD/Blu-ray collection for esier viewing on all our TV's and I was looking for more filter options (Like by Rating).  I was also looking for a quick scroll option (like the ipod does when you scroll through your music).  And even a search functoin for your movie/TV shows for your itunes library.  Now if I'm missing a setting somewhere then that will clear this all up.
    Thanks for your help.

As much as I would love it if the Apple TV was to have a Blu-Ray player, that will never happen. That is not what Apple is trying to do with this product. If you also look at the direction they are going, it would seem that Apple thinks everyone can do away with all types of media and just go strictly wireless and buy everything through iTunes. This is a real shame. It would appear that Apple just doesn't understand that most people, such as myself, do not want to be pushed into something they don't want. If the Apple TV had a blu-ray drive it would be the only thing I needed for my media center. Since it doesn't I have to either buy one or get something that already has it such as a PS3.

  • Alternative streaming source for AppleTV?

I just bought the new Time Capsule to make room for more movies to be played on my AppleTV, but then it seems I still need my mac running to manage it all thru iTunes!!!
This is so not ok! I don't want to keep my Mac running at all times just to connect AppleTV to iTunes when I don't have any other need for it. All my daily tasks are normally well covered by my iPads and phones. There must be another possible way for AppleTV to access my media externally? Or is it time to look for totally other solutions?
Now, back to the store to return my Time Capsule - sadly it was a waste of money!

    Buy another product.

  • Why do I need to convert QT movies for my ipad2?

Why do I need to convert QT movies for my ipad2?

Becuase the iPad only reads certain video formats you will need to convert them.
But luckily you can drag your video files into iTunes and select the iTunes menu command (from the Advanced menu) to convert the file into a iPad/AppleTV comatible format. Easy.

  • If I purchase a movie from AppleTV can I download to iTunes?

If I purchase a movie from AppleTV can I download to iTunes?

Thanks... that was my thinking.  When I go to iTunes on Mac there is no "Purchased" section for Movies... there is one for Music and TV Shows... and in iTunes on iPad there is a section there as well for Purchased Movies... so how can you get to Purchased Movies in iTunes.. only option is to buy... if I press buy will it tell me I already bought it and let me download it?  don't want to get charged twice for the same movie.

  • Preset for appletv?

    Hi Folks,
I'm on FCP 5.1.4 with its latest version of compressor.
Am I missing something or is there no Appletv preset?
I realize I can go to quicktime conversion and choose the atv preset, but I can't alter any of the settings. I'd like to tweak the compression settings like I can in handbrake (unfortunately, HB can not take fcp files with chapters so that's not the greatest solution).
I'm transferring my own home movies for the ATV.
Currently, if i don't use the QT conversion method, i created a preset in compressor by tweaking the ipod preset.
Is this the way to go?
    Cheers,
    Keebler
Ps. my footage is straight NTSC 4:3. I'm keeping it without letterbox b/c most tvs should automatically output the proper size?

Just looked in Adobe Media Encoder CS6 and there is no specific "Apple TV 2" preset, just "Apple TV". However, there are several frame sizes and frame rates. If you can tell me what sizing and frame rate, maybe I can paste the preset settings in here and you can duplicate on your end then? For instance "720p 29.97" ?
    Thanks

  • Movies for ipod

I have a movie in itunes on my imac i wanted to put on my ipod touch. I encoded the movie for apple tv originally. I tries to just sync the movie to my ipod touch but itunes told me it could not be played on the touch. I am converting the movie over for ipod using itunes but it seems to take for ever. Is this normal and should i have had to convert the movie for ipod in the first place?

appletv support 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps
    ipod tough is 640-by-480
if you convert to ipod in the first place it will not look very good on your appletv
