Movies from iPhoto do NOT appear in iMovie

When I click on "iPhoto Videos" nothing is displayed, although I even made a Smart Folder in iPhoto that had the keyword "movie" just to prove to myself I do have movies in there.
My movies are in MPEG-1 format, and play fine in iPhoto. I can't import them manually because iMovie blocks going in to the iPhoto folder in the import window directly (kinda neat safety feature... as long as the "iPhoto Videos" feature works... which it doesn't)
Anyone got around this one yet?

Hi Bruce -
I have the same problem. (Your video clips must be from a Sony digital camera - they only use MPEG-1 muxed video).
There are several things you could do.
1) buy a different brand digital camera (Canon uses AVI - which is fully compatible with iMovie) for all future video clips
2) complain to Sony that muxed video will not work with iMovie.
(Muxed means the audio and video are compressed together - so after being convereted to iMovie, the video will play, but the audio is thrown out.)
3) complain to Apple that all Sony's video are not supported in iMovie.
4) get a third party converter, and batch convert them all to MPEG4 (you can convert to DV, too, but in my clips, DV increased the file sizes 10x). I use MPEG Streamline. Free and quick (about an hour to convert 50 or so short clips) The biggest headache is that the date and time after conversion is wrong. Grrrrrr Now I have to go back and reset the dates manually for 12 months worth of video clips. Grrrrrr again.
5) Then, dump the newly converted and date-corrected clips into iPhoto, and they will all show up the next time you open iMovie (after a "conversion" process that takes a while.)
I hope that helps!
I might have gotten some of the details wrong.... hopefully some of the smart people reading this post will correct any errors I've made!
thanks -
Holly

  • Some photos from iPhoto are not appearing in iMovie

I have successfully imported over 2,000 pictures from iPhoto into iMovie. However, my latest attempt did not work- these photos were from a CD scanned by somebody else. The photos are in iPhoto, but when I pull up the folder in iMovie, it is blank.
    Any idea why??? Thanks.

You should be able to tell in iPhoto. If not, right click on the photo in iPhoto and select "Reveal in Finder". You should see the file. Right click on it and select "Get Info"

  • Videos in iPhoto do not appear in iMovie event browser

After successfully importing 60 or so video clips into imovie:
Clips appear and function normally in iPhoto.
Clips do not appear in iMovie event browser unless they are 4 seconds in length or less.
Previous imports from the same camera worked fine.
It started happening after the most recent software updates.

Deleting the prefs did for it to activate this scan:
    Upadating iPhoto video events
Scanning for new videos in your iPhoto library
But it still shows no videos in the iPhoto Video part of the Event Libary.  I am using iPhoto 8.0.6 under MacOS 10.7.5.
When I choose Show Date Ranges in Events list under iMovie preferences, it shows Feb 24, 2008.  What does that mean?  What happened on Feb 24, 2008?  I have over 1000 movies in my iPhoto Library ranging from 2005 to present.
Any other ideas?  Someone suggested removing the "&" symbol from the titles of Events, which I did.  Should i also remove the "&" symbol from the titles of the photos and movies?  What about other symbols like ":".  It seems crazy that Apple would make their software so fragile that ASCII symbols could break it.
    thanks

  • Avchd movies from lumix FZ100 not recognized by imovie

avchd movies from lumix FZ100 not recognized by imovie

iMovie does not edit MPEG2 natively. However, iMovie will import directly from a supported camera. During the import, the footage will be converted from MPEG2 to Apple Intermediate Codec.
If you hook up your camera, it should import just fine.
For existing footage that you have stored on your hard drive, there are a couple of options.
    1) The MPEG Streamclip option. With MPEG Streamclip (free) (and the MPEG2 Playback component which you already have) you can convert the MPEG2 to a iMovie compatible format like DV or AIC or h.264.
    2) You might be able to "fake out" iMovie into thinking that your hard drive footage is really on a camera. To do this, you will need to create a disk image of your camera, and move the footage back to the disk image. Alternatively, you could drag the footage back to your camera and import from there. Perhaps someone who has your camera can give detailed instructions for this. The disk image must have the identical file structure that your camera does. (This is how imovie knows it is a camera.)
Disk images can be created by Disk Utility, which comes with your Mac. It is found in the Applications/Utilities folder, and is also handy if you ever need to format a drive.

  • Movies in MPEG1 from iPhoto don't appear in iMovie

Hi - in my iPhoto library I have most of the movies I took with my camera SONY T200 - in format Quick Time Movie. Past few movies (the ones I don't see in iMovie) are in MPEG1 format - which I have no idea how that change happened?
    Can I change the format?
Is it camera issue or my computer?
I even tried to import the movie using File/import/movies from iMovie no luck.
    Please help

    From another post...
The issue is that most MPEG1 clips are not edit-compatible with quicktime, because of how the audio track is multiplexed with the video. But iMovie '09 supports several sony cameras that shoot MPEG1 movies. But only directly from the MPEG1 camera itself. If you've already sucked the movies into iPhoto, you'll have to trick iMovie into thinking its a camera archive, and cross your fingers.
    Try this:
    (1) create a new folder on your hard disk called FakeMPEG1Camera (the name here isn't too important).
    (2) inside that folder, create a folder called DCIM (the name here, and capitol letters, is important)
    (3) inside that folder, place a few of the MPEG1 movies (they need to end with .MPG)
    (4) launch iMovie. Choose File > Import... > Camera Archive...
    (5) navigate to the 'FakeMPEG1Camera' folder. If your clips are importable, the 'DCIM' folder should be grayed out, and the bottom of the window will say 'Camera Archive Detected.'
    (6) click 'Import'. The camera import window will appear, and you can import the clips. iMovie will convert the movie to an edit-compatible format (audio turns into PCM).
Not every MPEG1 file I've tried works, but many do.
If you have a Sony camera that shoots MPEG1, it's easiest to import the footage directly into iMovie while it's still on the camera... do that in the future.

  • Movies in iPhoto are not showing in iMovie clips

I have movies in iPhoto that are not showing in the video clips to select for iMovie.  Is there anywhere I can export them so I can grab them for my movie?

he iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

  • Why are my purchased movies from apple TV not appearing in itunes?

I have purchased movies on both my itunes and apple tv. However, my apple tv movies do not appear on my itunes. I would like to either have them all on my itunes or all on my apple tv (or is it iCloud??).
Is this possible? If so, how? Thank you.

If a movie is removed from the iTunes store then yes you would lose it.
I think you misunderstand what icloud is, there is no 'raw contents'.
iCloud allows for reloading of past purchases (it is simply accessing what is on the storefront), syncing contents between devices and backup of mobile data. It is different from say something like dropbox.

  • Desktop photo from iPhoto does not appear in iPhoto

MacBook Pro, approximately one year old, OS 10.8.5 and iPhoto '11
In System Preferences>Desktop and Screen Saver, I have the Desktop set to use iPhoto, changing randomly every 1 minute. Some photos it uses are not photos that appear anywhere in iPhoto. Today I saw one go by that I want to access and use for other purposes, but it's not in iPhoto! Could the Desktop rotation be accessing photos in some other form?

If your iPhoto library is offline, or you switched between iPhoto libraries, the System preferences will revert to using the system default photos instead.
All System default Desktop pictures are stored in the system library. Perhaps you can find the photos you are looking for in this folder:
/Library/Desktop Pictures/  (in Lion or later, if I remember correctly)
Open the "Library" folder at the top level of your Macintosh HD and open the folder "Desktop Pictures".  Be careful, when you browse this folder. Don't change anything.

  • How to resize and email short movies from iPhoto 08

    Hi all,
I've just switched from PC to Mac. With PC i used to use ACDSee as my picture and short movie editor.
Similarly on Mac i have downloaded pictures and short movies to iPhoto. Where with pictures I have no trouble resizing and emailing, I can not resize and email my short movies. I have browsed trough number of forums but can not find anything on resizing and emailing movies from iPhoto.
Trouble if using iMovies is that I have both photos and movies on the camera and when transferring it will take time to sort them.
If someone knows an easy or even hard way around this problem please help.?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
iPhoto will not edit the Movies in any way.
You can easily find all the Movies in your library.
    File -> New Smart Album
    Keyword -> Is -> movie
as each movie is automatically given a 'movie' keyword on import.
iMovie will them show that Smart Album in it's media browser, so finding them from it is easy.
    Regards
    TD

  • I exported 10G of movies from Iphoto but did not get new room on my hard drive.  Why?

My hard drive is almost full so I exported about 10GB of movies from IPhoto to an external drive.  Then I placed them in Trash.  However, there was no increase on the hard drive available space after I placed those files in trash.  Also, there was no trash in the trash bin.  So it appears as if the files are not really being deleted.  (They have disappeared from the iphoto events folder.)  I also have the same movie clips in IMovie which I did not manipulate.  Prior to this event I was trying to delete files from a thumb drive and also had the files disappear but there was no change in available space on that thumb drive.  In that case I did the deletion on a PC and when placed back on the Mac computer the deleted space became available.
Why are file deletions not being processed to add space to the hard drive?

I can't help with iPhoto specifically since I don't use it, but just out of curiosity: did/do you empty the trash? Space is not regained until after the trash is actually emptied.
Also, when you export or drag/copy files,  normally the files are copied to the new location and the originals still exist. As for space on your hard drive: you need to maintain an absolute minimum of 10 - 15 GB; more is better. If you edit/render/burn video, you need to have at least as much free space on your hard drive as the size of the files in your project if you want the machine to perform satisfactorily.

  • IMovie doesn't import all movies from iPhoto - at least one solution

I noticed that iMovie 08 imported my movies from iPhoto, but strangely not all of them. A quick search of the support forums indicated many others were having the same issue.
After comparing file attributes of movies that were importing successfully into iMovie versus movies that didn't show up, I found that a rogue character ("&") was preventing iMovie from importing the file properly.
Renaming the title in iPhoto does not resolve the issue, since the file name (in Finder) remains the same. However, if I make a copy of that file outside of the iPhoto Library, rename it in Finder, then re-import it back into iPhoto, then iMovie will see it. I didn't rename the movie file inside of the iPhoto Library for fear of corrupting the library structure.
I found this to work at least with my .avi files. I still have the same issue as everyone else with iMovie not importing .mpg files that play properly in iPhoto.

Good thinking! The only way to change the filename in iPhoto is to export the movie file, import it back in, copy over comments, keywords from the old to the new movie, and then delete the old movie.

  • Movies imported from iPhoto do not have sound

When I connect my camera (Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W55) to iPhoto, it downloads both the pictures and video that the memory card has recorded on it from the camera.
Now, when I drag a movie from iPhoto to iMovie, the video clip doesn't have any sound. Thus far, I've tried importing in DV format and MPEG4 format. The video will play, with sound, in QuickTime Player from iPhoto, but in iMovie, it doesn't.
Also, when I click on the Help->iMovie HD Help, it starts to open help, but then closes itself. Bug, or do I need to re-download iMovie, or... purchase a higher level of iMovie? If I can't even get the Help function to work, what good is this piece of software?
BTW, I'm on a Mac Pro 2x2.66 GHz processor, 1GB RAM installed running Mac OS 10.5.2.

Now, when I drag a movie from iPhoto to iMovie, the video clip doesn't have any sound.
Your Sony stores its video content as multiplexed MPEG VX (MPEG-1) files which are "playback" only compatible with QT and QT applications. To retain the audio content you must use an MPEG-based, third-party application like MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert these files before importing to iMovie for editing.

  • How do i move movies from iphoto to imovie

How do I move movies from iphoto to imovie. Can I downlod movies from ipod or camera to imovie or does it need to go through iphoto first?

    1. Launch iMovie and import the movies from iPhoto
    2. No. You can launch iMovie, insert your media and import directly to iMovie. If you do this often you might want to change the default action when a camera is connected in the iPhoto preferences

  • How do you export photos and movies from iPhoto to your iPhone? I synced the device and noticed that some photos and some movies from iPhoto on my laptop were not transferred to my iPhone.

How do you export photos and movies from iPhoto to your iPhone?  I synced the devices and noticed that some photos and movies on my laptop iPhoto were not transferred to my iPhone?

I am not sure, which answer you found - so just in case:
If you sync your iPhone with the iPhoto library, the photos will only stay on the iPhone until the next sync and they are not in the Camera Roll. If you transfer using the Photo Stream, they will only be vidsible in the stream, until they are replaced in iCloud by newer content.
So, if you want to transfer the photos permanently, save them to the Camera Roll.
