Movies in Shared Library won't play

I have several home movies in .MOV, .MP4 and .M4V formats shared through my library.
I can copy the actual video file from all 3 formats to the other computers and they play fine - thus all Codecs are working as they should.
The list of movies appears fine. But I hit the Play button but nothing happens. It pauses for a few seconds and then acts as if I never hit the button.
Music plays fine.
Other computers are running latest version of iTunes, downloaded from Apple Dec 29 and Dec 30, 2009. One runs Vista and the other runs Win7. Host computer (iTunes server) is running Snow Leopard.

None yet. Please report it to apple.

How can I download a previously downloaded purchase to my iTunes library on my laptop when the listing for the song in my library won't play because it says it cannot locate the file. Yes I have searched my iTunes folders and also done a full windows search. The track plays on my iPad and my iPhones but will not play on my laptop!?
It has an "!" To the left of the song title in my library
My worry is that if I sync my iPad/iPhone then I will lose the track on those also!

If you cannot find the file on your hard drive then once you delete the current broken entry you should be able to redownload from iTunes in the Cloud. This assumes the item in question qualifies. Note that audiobooks, digital booklets, iTunes LPs & Extras, ringtones, selected movies etc. don't.
If prompted don't hide the item. You may find that you need to close and then reopen iTunes before it will appear for download.

  • I want to move a movie from Shared Library to LIbrary, how do I do this?

I want to move a movie from Shared Library to LIbrary, how do I do this?

this extra info helps a lot. with home sharing you should be able to just import the file from your iMac into your MBP. this is the way i've done it at home.
-just make sure both are on with itunes open
    -select your imac's library
    - hightlight the file you want then click on import towards the bottom of the screen.

    Yes there is.
Go to the iTunes Store on your computer.  Click the "Purchased" link about halfway down on the far right side.  Click the "All" tab on top.  The song is there.  Re-download it.

  • Upgraded to 8.02, many songs in library won't play: "Song could not be used

A few days ago, I took the 8.02.20 update to iTUNES on my PC with Windows XP, I have latest service pack, yada yada.
After the iTunes upgrade, I noticed that many of my songs in my itunes library won't play when I click on them.
I get the icon of the exclamation point in a circle to the left of the song name, and the message says:
"song XXX could not be used because the original file could not be found." Would you like to locate it?"
I never moved any of my songs, and the songs that it says could not be found ARE indeed on my computer, and I can use the Windows file explorer to find the song and play it.
Back to iTunes, I decide to answer yes to the error, and "find the song" by manually meandering over to the song through the file browser window which iTunes pops up, I get to the file, and it then plays in iTunes.
My question is, how did iTunes "forget" where the songs are, and why did it forget most of them, but yet leave many others ok. I never moved nay files or anything.
Is there a way to make it recompile the library?

Probably not every one, but you will have to do it several times. Right click on the name of the song, show in window's explorer and when it can't it should give you a dialogue to find the song.
Once it finds one it'll offer to find more and you can locate stuff that way.

Perhaps try the "Error 3001," "-42110," or "5103" section in the Specific Conditions and Alert Messages: (Mac OS X / Windows) section of the following document:

  • Mapped Drive to a OS X Shared Folder won't play purchased videos in iTunes

I have a MacBook Pro sharing out a folder where all my purchased movies are stored. I've got a Vista box to which I've added the full library. All the music has shown up, but none of the movies or TV shows. They won't play from the shared directory.
If I move the files locally, they play fine, so there must be some permissions issue with the files. I can read/write to the directory.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Shared Libraries Won't Play

I can see the shared libraries on the other 2 Macs on my home WiFi network, but the songs won't play.
Also - one of the Mac's libraries won't show on the others, even though library sharing is turned on.
    Any help?

It has to do with how I was transscoding the videos. Handbrake tags the videos in a way that makes it impossible to play in Windows. Retagging with a program like MetaX will solve the issue.

  • High resolution movie over shared library

    Hi,
my iTunes music folder is on a network server and the library file on my iMac. Now I want to play a movie from the iMac over shared library on my Mac mini. The movie is a 100% quality ripped DVD in MP4 with 3 audio layers (DD 2.0, DD 5.1, DTS 5.1) and has a bitrate of 18 mbits/s. When I start the movie from the Mac mini it loads the movie on and on but don't start it.
Is it just because of the 100 mbit local network, or is there any regulation from iTunes. In what video quality (I want the full audio quality) can I rip the DVD to play it over the network?

plaing the menu in every .swf file will increase the size of
each file. the shared library file will be larger than it needs to
    be.
Why not just make one .swf that only contains the just the
menu. Then you could create a master file that loads the menu.swf
at a high enough level that it is always on top. The other movies
(webpages) could be loaded inbetween the master.swf, which you'd
probably put on level 1, and the menu.swf. That way only the bare
essentials would need to be stored in the shared library keeping
its size as small as possible.

  • Library won't play more than one song at a time

What gives? My iTunes suddenly won't play a sequence of songs. Not from the library as a whole, not from any playlist. The files are all still there and I can highlight and play any ONE, but iTunes won't then go on to the next. Tried 'select all', that didn't work either. What setting have I accidently changed? Just downloaded the newest iTunes just in case, but that didn't help. Still only 1 song at a time. Makes using iTunes as background pretty useless.

Are you saying that when you hit PAUSE the song doesn't stop playing?
If you want to jump to a different song while one is already playing, you don't need to hit pause/stop at all. Simply go to the song you want to here, double click it and the song that was playing will stop and the double clicked song will start. No need to use the Stop/Pause/Play type controls at all.

  • Itunes library won't play music on my ext hdd

I have approx 1400 cd's catalogued on itunes (library) the music is stored on a portable hard drive.
When I try and play a song it tells me itunes cannot locate the file, it then asks would I like it to locate the file.
When I answer yes it will take me straight to the hdd that the music is stored on yet it still won't play it unless I play it from the portable hdd.
With 490gb of music and still more to back up.
I am using a MacBook Pro and have itunes v11 if that helps
Supplementary question, I number my discs (I am an ex dj) but with itunes I got to 999 and then had to start at number 1 again does anyone know a way around this?.
Any help will really be appreciated
    Thank you

#1 Is the hard drive on and mounted before starting iTunes?  iTunes will look only once, at startup, for things on an external drive.  If the drive isn't there (it is not on, or it is sleeping) it won't look again.
#2 I think you are running up against something hard coded into iTunes.  3 digits max (same applies to BPM).  iTunes is likely programmed with the general consumer in mind, who will use it in a straight-forward manner as intended.  Some DJs find it limited in some features but then it likely isn't programmed for DJs.  An alternative for you is to think outside the box.  For example, "Show" is a tag not normally used for music, but you can store information there too which goes beyond 3 digits/characters.  Note, however, it is only stored in iTunes. If you delete a music track and add it again the stored information is not embedded in the music file and is lost.

  • Movies in mobilme gallery won't play in safari on the ipad

The movies I have put on my MobilMe Gallery won't play in Safari on the iPad. The photo gallery works fine, but the movies gallery does not. I created the movies directly from within Quicktime (Share-> MobilMe gallery). Using Safari on my Mac everything works fine. It's only on the iPad that it fails!
What is the matter here? And how to solve this?

Yes, same thing here. I received an email on my iPad with a direct link to a MobileMe gallery movie page. Click on the link and Safari opens just fine, and shows the first image of movie and the text, but no spinning, never loads, can't play.
I know you're supposed to use the MM Gallery app... but... what about those iPad users who don't have MobileMe, but are just redirected by an email link - they could download it, but wouldn't know that.
