Movies no longer play in iTunes or ATV

I installed the software update for iTunes 11.1.5.5 and now movies (m4v from Handbrake) stored on my PC no longer play in iTunes or Apple TV. These have been playing fine for years, so I'm guessing that 11.1.5.5 has something in it that suddenly doesn't like this format anymore. I can still see my whole library in ATV, covers and all, but when I hit play, I just get the spinning icon. In iTunes, it's just a black screen with the timer staying at zero. Music still plays fine on both devices. I'm frustrated at myself to no end for installing the update. As well, I cannot fine a single complaint of this same issue. I'm hoping that might be because there's a simple fix (long shot I know). Anyone else having issues? Any ideas? Please remember that this file format has been playing without issue for years, so please don't suggest that I change the format unless you know for sure that is a new concern with playback. Thank you.

Well, in case anyone is reading this and willing to offer ideas, I did uninstall iTunes 11.1.5.5 and re-installed the last full version I had saved 11.1.1.11 (not really sure of the last version I was on before everything stopped working). Nothing was lost during the re-install (all libraries, playlists and such are still as they were....I was expecting this not to be the case). However, this process didn't change the video playback problem. I'm at a loss of what this could be. I went through the audio issues mentioned on another thread and did the recommendations, with no change. I did manage to find a few videos that still do play. The only difference I could see is that they are listed as "low complexity" and in stereo. I suppose it probably is an audio thing, though I have no idea why it's an issue now, when it never has been in the past. Please help. Thank you.

  • Some movies no longer play in iTunes

I rip a lot of my DVDs/BR's and put them onto my external drive to play in iTunes and on my Apple TV. I noticed that some of my HD movies will play on my Apple TV, but they won't play in iTunes. I can skip to various scenes and iTunes just stays on that frame - it doesn't play. Oddly, Quicktime X and and other media player will play the movie. I had no issues in ML, this just happened after upgrading to Mavericks.
    Any ideas?

It seems to be a perian problem.
Modified it like said on this post (for other reasons) : https://code.google.com/p/subler/issues/detail?id=404#c12

Hope it does for you too.

  • My movies wont't play  on iTunes 11

    Hi,
My movies won't play on itunes 11 (if i scroll the timeline it can show still images but do not play).
With the previous version it worked fine.
it's running on a mac mini freshly reinstalled with OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
The movies bought on itunes store play fine.
The others m4v h.264(x264) with ac3 sound no.
    Regards

The files are also saved as .m4v  .  I don't know what this means but for example, a tv show that won't play in iTunes 10.4.1 (10) is Isobel.m4v
    Please help me!!!

  • Here is a crazy problem. My home movie will no longer play in iTunes.

I created a home movie using Final Cut Pro X.  I shared it to ITunes.  The video played ok.  I then changed the name of the video under the "get info" tab in iTunes, and the thumbnail view of the video changed from the first frame of the movie to a picture of a film reel and the movie will no longer play.  I tried changing the name back to the original, shutting down iTunes and the computer itself, copying the movie, all to no avail.  I also tried accessing the movie from the finder, and it would not open using QuickTime or VLC.  Any ideas?

The lack of a purchase date, although I am not quite sure why it happens, does not in itself prevent the track from being authorized and played.  However, since the account name is correct and they have disappeared from your purchase history, something may have been corrupted.
Unless someone here has a better idea,  you should take it up with iTunes Customer Service.

  • HT204370 Existing movie will no longer play on iTunes

I have on my iMac a movie (protected MPEG-4 video file, purchased from the iTunes Store in 2008) which was a present to me.  The email address (hence Apple ID) of its original buyer is no longer active, and its companion password is unknown.
When I try to play this movie, I get the message that my computer is not authorized to play this movie, asking me to authorize it.  It provides the Apple ID at the time this movie was purchased (“xxxxxxx”@hotmail.com) and asks for a password.  Attempts to authorize by entering a likely password has no success.  Attempts by entering my own current Apple ID and password bring up the message “this computer is already authorized” along with a black window.  Clicking on this window brings up the usual play/stop/volume control bar at its bottom, indicating 0:00 status of play, with the double bar option (for stopping the play) offered, but the movie is not playing.  Clicking on the double right triangle has no effect.  Clicking on the single right triangle brings up the next movie in my collection.
I was able to play this movie a couple of OS upgrades back, but no longer with my OS 10.9.1.   How can I access my movie now?

You will need to authorise the account that it's linked to. Was the film gifted to you (in which case you should be able to get your password for the account reset : http://iforgot.apple.com), or did somebody else use their account to buy and download it ?

  • ITunes HD Movies No Longer play

I have a 30" Cinema Display connected to a Mac Pro (Early 2008).  Today I replaced the original nVidea card that came with the system with an ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Card.
The HD movies that I've purchased from iTunes no longer play.  I get an "The selected movie won't play on your display." error with the following comment
"This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)."
This ticks me off as I have been playing HD movies for years.  I had purchased the card in order to replace the 30" Cinema Display later this year as it has developed a fault that shows up as a red or green vertical line that is noticeable when the monitor is first turned on.  It will disappear after being used for a while. It seems to disappear more quickly with the new ATI Radeon HD 5770.
Is there a way to get iTunes HD movies to play in my current configuration?

I restored my nVidia 8800GT graphics card and was able to watch the HD content purchased from iTunes, again.  So, it should be able to do the same.
If your plan is to install both video cards on your system, there might be a problem.  If iTunes senses that there is a video card that implements the HD encryption standard, it will restrict HD output to that video card.

  • All my downloaded(digital copy) movies will no longer play in itunes, i get a black screen, and no sound, but the time keeps going. how can i fix this?

All my downloaded (digital copies from dvds) won't play in itunes. I get a black screen and no sound, but the time keeps moving. How do i fix this?

    Hi 22chill,
I recommend that we delete and re-download the movie from your purchase history:

  • HT204370 My movies no longer play after upgrade

Can someone please help?  I upgraded my computer to Win 7.  Since the upgrade I can no longer play my movies that I bought through the itunes store, nor can I sync them onto my ipod classic.  I have been watching these movies on this same Ipod for years.   When I try to play the movies through itunes, it just shuts down with an error.   I have reinstalled itunes. I have reset and restored my ipod. Still no luck.  I have searched the internet and this seems to be a common problem, but no one has a solution.  Do anyone here have one?
    Thanks

    Any ideas?

Here is the log. Looks like its QT is crashing it. So, again, its either QT, or one of the Vista updates. I haven't tried to watch a movie on the computer in awhile so I have no idea what update in the past few months is causing the problem.

  • Interactive booklets no longer play in iTunes

All my interactive booklets from albums I bought at the iTunes Store no longer play! I am running Leopard with all the latest updates to my software. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Revision:
From what I've read at macworld.com, Apple disabled the flash function in the latest QuickTime update due to a possible security breach. Why is it that Apple doesn't even mention this? I hope a fix is on the way.

  • Movies which are played with itunes are missing 2nd line of subtitles therefore apple tv 2 misses these also. How so?

Movies converted from MKV via Handbrake which are played with itunes are missing 2nd line of subtitles therefore apple tv 2 misses these also. Funny is that Quicktime and Ipad 2 handles subtitles correctly on the same moviefile.
(please note that the subtitles are not burned into movie)
    What can be the problem?
    Has anyone suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

  • Rented movies do not play in iTunes.

Its just a black screen and the time counter wont move. The rented movies play fine on my iPad, also purchased movies/tv-shows plays fine. This all happened after installing Lion. Someone with similar experiences? Or with any sollutions?

You did try tapping on one of them in that list in the iPod app! This has happened to me and I was able to start the movie from there. You could try restarting the iPad, go into the iPod app and try again.
Now I'm stumped unless it is a corrupt download. You did download right onto the iPad - correct? If you downloaded in iTunes, there is a Move tab or function that you have to select to transfer the movies to the iPad when you sync. They just don't sync over without selecting move.

  • Digital Disney movies will not play in iTunes 12.1.1

Digital Disney movies will not play when selecting play. I've used space bar, left and right laptop mouse button and enter. The other menu options have no issues. It's got to be only with the iTune extra when redeeming from Disney Blu-ray.

Well, I uninstalled the iTunes software and reinstalled the software. The songs in question are still not recognized. When I had unstalled the iTunes software, I went into "Program Files" and to the "iTunes" folder. Nothing was in the folder except a plugin for Last.fm. I had not removed that. Upon reinstallation, I tried to play the songs again in iTunes and they still to not play (nor do they even load). Any idea as to what this may be?
