Movies shot with my Canon T2i playback in iPhoto '11 is jerkey

Movies shot with my Canon T2i DSLR playback seems very jerkey. It seems like it plays a few frames and suddenly skips one, then the process repeats. Anyone know of a way to resolve this?
I downloaded the same movie from my camera to my PC (running Windows 7) and it plays just fine!!
Is this a Quicktime issue? iPhoto issue? Mac issue?... Please help!

iPhoto uses QuickTime to play the videos so that seems a likely culprit. Have you installed Perian?

  • Incompatibility problem w/ movies shot w/ my Canon IXUS700 camera

I am having trouble with iMovie08 quitting every time I try to add / import movies (avi formaat) I shot with my camera (Canon IXUS700). My Finder also quit on me just by trying to select those movies and it goes the same for iPhoto08. Every time I tried to import straight from the camera, iPhoto just quit when it gets to a movie file. Is it because of the avi format? What should I do, pls help!!! thanks.

This is a known symptom with 3rd party CODECS such as Perian installed using FCE4 with AVCHD - look to see if you have any installed and remove them.
BTW: It's a good idea to search through posts before asking a question that has been answered at least 2 times recently in this forum.

  • Trouble previewing photos shot with a Canon 20D in iMovie. Help please.

Hi out there. I have a photo library with images shot with two different digital cameras: Canon PowerShot 40 and Canon SRL 20D. For some reasons that I can't figure out, photos taken by the 20D can't be previewed most of the times. Please what's that simple thing I have to do. thanks

Honestly, I don't know what's going on. Perhaps someone will read your answers here and get an idea.
When you double-click one of those images in the timeline or clips pane, does the clips info box open? Is there anything strange there, compared to a photo that does preview properly?
Have you imported these images into iMovie with the Ken Burns effect turned on, then emptied the iMovie trash, and now the Preview window is black when you try to modify their settings? This is a known iMovie 6 bug, which you can read lots about here: http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_6_bugs.html#stillupdate If this is the case, you'll have to reimport those photos.

    does iPhoto show all pics?
if not, something is wrong with the pictures ...
if iPhoto DO show all pics...:
    the 20D has ~8Mpix resolution..
use any pic processor (or Apple's Preview), to downsize the res to 720x480 (if you don't do any KB effects...)
we read more&more reports, that iM has some 'trouble' with 'large scale' pics from these new digistills with a res beyond >5Mpix ... forum's mastermind Karl Petersen recommends to downsize them ..

  • How can I move pictures, with their videos, from a different iPhoto Library to my new that I already have been using?

I replaced my hard drive in my MBP a few months ago and started using a iPhoto Library and have been ever since. Now that I've actually taken the time to get most of my files off my old hard drive, I want to import all my albums, hopefully in the same order, to my new iphoto library.
I know I can export pictures, and it works well, but when I do so for the videos in those folders, all I get is a second-long video of the original.
I don't want to have to opt-click everytime to select either of my libraries. I do want to combine them but have not figured out how. I ask if anybody has the answer. Thanks in advance.

The only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of  iPhoto Library Manager
I know I can export pictures, and it works well, but when I do so for the videos in those folders, all I get is a second-long video of the original.

  • How to handle 30.00 fps mov-files shot with a Canon Ixus?

What's the best way to edit this material you think? What project settings should i use? Should i convert the fps somehow to 24 fps or 29.97 fps?

    Juri,
Like you I own a Canon Ixus and I agree with you that they produce good enough video for the web. And why not be able to edit all material in your fine adobe product, after all you paid for it.
I have managed to solve this issue by installing the Morgan mjpeg codec.
I downloaded it from www.free-codecs.com/download/Morgan_M-JPEG_Codec.htm where can also find the link to purchase the full version if you should need. (don't know the limitations in the "demo")
I'm using kaspersky anti-virus and I could not detect any suspicious code in the mjpeg installation file however of course you download at your own risk.
Personally I haven't tested it extensively but so far import, edit, and export to mp4 has worked fine.
To edit, create a new sequence, click general and set it up as follows:
    timebase: 30 frames/second.
    Frame size 640 by 480
    Fields: No fields, progressive scan
    Display format: 30fps timecode
    Sample rate:
Actually not sure, the ixus produces 11024Hz 88 kb/s Mono which is not available as a preset, so I've just set it to whatever sample rate other timelines in the same project uses. 48000Hz works fine for me, that's all I know.
    Preview file format:
I've left this on what was the default; "I-Frame Only MPEG"
These settings work fine so far, provided that I have installed the Morgan mjpeg codec.
Hope this is of help to you.

  • Can I use my Canon Speedlight 199A with my Canon T2i?

I have a 199A from my days with my AE-1.  Both work!  Can I use the 199A with my T2i?

Automatic flash exposure with an AE-1 (btw, I still have my AE-1) and modern Canon E-TTL of today are VERY different.
While you can use your flash as a "manual" flash... you may want to invest in newer gear.
On your 199A, there was no "TTL" capability of the flash.  That flash has 3 "auto" power levels... a high, medium, and low.  It merely told the camera to set the f-stop to either f/2.8, f/5.6, or f/11.
The flash unit has a thyristor sensor on the front that measures the light return to the flash and then cuts off the flash when it thinks it's received enough light.  Highly reflective surfaces could fool it into thinking it had recevied enough light and shut down even if the subject of interest was underexposed.
Modern E-TTL II flash is MUCH MUCH smarter.  As the name implies, it is actual "TTL" metering... meaning the camera and flash are have bi-direction communication.
    E-TTL does the following:
It meters the scene with no flash whatsoever -- using "evaluative" metering and noting the amount of light present in each zone of the scene.
It fires a pre-flash at low power level.  Typically the default is 1/32nd power, but you can configure the flash to change that.
While the pre-flash is illuminating the scene, the camera meters the scene again.
The camera then compares each zone of the scene WITH the pre-flash to each zone of the scene WITHOUT the pre-flash.  Respective zones with very big difference indicate reflective objects (e.g. mirrors).  Zones with almost no difference indicate probable light sources (e.g. a light source in the scene... such as a table lamp, street light, etc.).  Zones with a more reasonable difference indicate actual elements of the scene benefiting from flash.  Having isolated zones which aren't reliable indicators of flash... the camera concentrates on calculating needed flash power by looking at the remaining zones.
If the flash is mounted on-camera and also pointed directly ahead (and ONLY if both of these conditions are true) THEN the E-TTL system will also request lens focusing distance information and take this into account when calcuating flash power.  This is because the "inverse square" law can be applied.  If the flash is off-camera then the computer cannot assume that the lens distance and flash distance are the same.  Also if the flash is being bounced then the distance the light will need to travel will not match the lens focus distance.  Hence, it only uses this info if both conditions are true.
With all of the above considered, the computer decides how much power should be used for the "real" shot and the camera opens the shutter and the flash fires using the calcuated power level.
All of this happens so fast that most people presume the flash just fired once.
Thyristor flash would be fooled by a strong light source (e.g. shooting into the sun and trying to use the flash as "fill" would fool the unit into thinking enough light had been delivered -- there are many things that could trick a thyristor-based auto flash.
Modern E-TTL does much more... that was just the basics, but you can see how the system is much more clever about figuring out how much power is really needed and knows how to isolate areas of the scene that used to fool auto-flash technologies of the past.
Modern flash can provide high-speed sync (rapid successive pulses of light as the curtain shutters sweep across the sensor at speeds faster than the flash "sync" speed.
Modern flash can also provide "2nd curtain" sync... where the flash fires just before closing the shutter rather than just after the shutter opens.  When shooting a subject to imply motion while using flash, this provides more directional blur that the eye expects.
Some (but not all) modern flash can provide "multi-strobic" flash... where the flash pulses several times at a slower speed (you control) during a very long exposure.  E.g. if I photograph an athelte "throwing a ball" you get images of them at many different points throughout the "throw" all in one exposure due to multi-strobic mode.
Most modern flash can participate in multi-light shooting scenarios where one flash acts as a "master" to tell the other units when to fire (and at what power level) and the others act as "slaves" (taking orders from the master) to provide better lighting (read specs carefully... some units can only be "slaves", some can only be "masters", and some can be either.)
Modern flash technology really has evolved and refined what you can do with flash.

  • IPhoto CRASHES when I try ti import short video shot with my Canon Rebel..HELP!!!

HELP!    I have a Canon Rebel EOS T3i.  I shoot many wonderful still pixs.  I have also shot some video (movies) during recent cruise which I was able to download and edit properly and include it in my overall Cruise Album.
I have been editing all this on iMovie, importing the photos, videos, adding titles, effexs. etc.   Suddenly -TODAY- iPhoto is not letting me shoot an additional short video to include in the Album.   When I IMPORT the video from the Canon into iPhoto,  and click PLAY, iPhoto CRASHES!    Something is wrong and I don't know what it is.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on eight different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.

  • ITunes won't show "video" portion of movies shot with my Nikon digital

Since I got my iPod nano (3rd Gen), I've not been able to see the video portion of my digital camera movies on iTunes. I can hear the audio, but the Quicktime video screen is blank and colored "green". These files will play with Windows Media Center but not with Quicktime, the "default" viewer in iTunes. Also, these videos don't transfer to my iPod nano either. A short cartoon movie from iTunes.com and Quicktime previews behave the same way - video part doesn't show. But the short cartoon movie DOES transfer to my iPod and it plays fine on the iPod. Please give me your suggestions to rectify this Quicktime problem. I've already uninstalled Quicktime and re-installed it; but it still doesn't work. I'm using ver. 7.4

  • Quicktime .mov files with MPEG-2 codec playback error

I have a series of .mov files, and I'm not able to open them in QT X or QT 7.6.6. The codecs listed in the Info for the files are: MPEG-2, Linear PCM, and Timecode. Original format is MPEG HD, at 1920x1080. Does anyone know how I can play them back? I don't have final cut editing software on my computer unfortunately and VLC opens the files so I can view the pictures, but they have no sound. Help!

Have a read through this thread, it might help.
At least your $20 may not be wasted.

  • XML files from CR2 files shot with Canon 7D do not save???

I opened a bunch of images shot with a Canon 7D through the Raw Processor in Bridge CS5. AFter making adjustments I clicked the "Done" button thinking the XML files would be upgraded. Nothing happens. What am I doing wrong. With all my other files this works perfectly.

everyone that is having this problem I think I have solved it.
Short quick answer so you dont have to read further. Check your date/time setting on your camera, it's probably wrong.
    Longer version:
I too have a Canon 7D and the other day I had taken some pictures of my son with santa and was experiencing the same problem.  I could edit in camera raw, but the changes would not save. I would not get the little icon next to the image either.Every other image worked fine except for the ones I took that day.  I was chalking it up to maybe a bad import of the images and maybe somethign was corrupting. but I was still able to open them and edit and save psd's so I wasnt too worried yet.
Today we went out and took some images of holiday lights and I came home downloaded the images and the same issue happened again. I went back to the santa pictures and I could edit them and the changes were saving now. So I googled and came across this post. Once I saw you too were having the same problem but it went away the next day, and another person was only having a issue with one camera I figured it had to be a setting in the camera.
And since the problem goes away with time I decided to check my time on my camera and it was set to 12/22 (today is 12/21). So I corrected the time took a test shot and downloaded it to the computer and it works perfectly again.
    Hope this helps!

  • Editing movies shot on a Samsung SC-X300

I'm purchasing a Samsung SC-X300L digital camcorder and know that it does not support Macs out of the box. Does anyone know what I have to do / download, to be able to edit movies shot with this camera on iMovie HD? I have VLC and some other software that I have used in the past to convert movie files shot with my Casio camera. Will this work, or is it more complicated for the Samsung?

  • Problems with a Canon eos T2i

I used my Canon T2i without problems for over a year and I am very pleased with it, but try taking days ago a video after  have been taking pictures in program mode and the camera will lock and no picture could be taken, only appeared one minute later a pattern with vertical lines ... try removing the battery to see if it unlocked and nothing happened, every time I tried to take a photo red light indicates that the camera is processing, (acces lamp), remained continuously lit and not seen any photos. If anyone can help me solve this problem would be very grateful.

    forgive me my bad english
i have this problem and a canon service centre took a look at it. They informed me that is would be a mainboard error. It needs to be replaced. Would cost me 250 euro's.
I took the camera home to think about it. After a few weeks i tried again and....it works fine. I could take pictures again. But when i tried movie it freezes again with the typical distortion on the lcd. Needs to reset by taking out the battery. After a few weeks it got the error again with taking pictures. Nothing helps. Tried to put it away 2 weeks but that did not resolve the problem.
i tried everything. Firmware, ML, other sd card's, lenses, and then i saw this possible solution for an error 70. Not my error but you never know.
--power down camera and remove battery
--power down HDMI device or powered adapter
--unplug the HDMI from the body, then plug it back in
--power up HDMI device or powered adapter
--insert battery and power up camera
and gues what. It works perfectly. NOT the video function. It's still freezes. But taking pictures is working for months now.
Before it would give the error when i stressed the camera with continuesly shooting at sports or something. Then it became slower en suddenly it would stop and give error 80. And now i can do what i want. It keeps working.
    It's worth i try?!
