Movies stalling on playback

I have a large library of movies in iTunes all stored on a NAS which until now has worked perfectly but I have just tried to watch a film and after a few minutes it started to stutter then stalled altogether. I have tried several different movies all with the same result, all of which I have watched before without a problem.
I have run check disc on the NAS and nothing was found, the NAS is only about 50% full so lots of space.
Any ideas anyone.

I'm pretty sure its related to the "Compatibility Update for QuickTime 7.5.5" that was released on 11/17. This was 1 of 2 updates that I installed yesterday.

  • My apple tv stalls during playback. How can I fix this?

My Apple TV stalls during playback. I am hooked up through ethernet so I'm certain that it is not a network issue. What happens is that after a few minutes of normal playback the movie that I'm watching simply stalls. It looks like AppleTV is trying to reboot it. if I rewind it briefly and restart the movie by pushing play it seems to be fine. But it it stalls again after a few minutes. I have to do this very often and it becomes quite distracting when you're trying to watch a show.
One thing I have noticed is that if I pause the program before it stalls and leave it for about 15 minutes I can watch a large portion of the show uninterrupted.
The files are in my iTunes library. I don't seem to have this issue if I'm playing the files from my iPad via AirPlay. I have restarted, reset, and rebooted AppleTV several times and it still keeps doing it. Any suggestions out there?

    640 x 480
    Widescreen 16:9
These settings are contradictory. Please post a screen capture image of the QT "Inspector" window to confirm what encode matrix setting, PAR display setting, and Scale display settings are actually embedded in your file. Also please confirm whether or not the source material was widescreen and it is 4:3 aspect you wish to correct at this point. If not, then please state the height at which the transcoded file was encoded and the target aspect ratio at which you want files to play in all media players.
Once compressed it plays back in Windows Media Player as 16:9 video.
When played back with Quicktime it is squished into a 4:3 format.
Different players dispay content aspect differently.
Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
QT 7, for instance, displays the file using specific Scale dimensions and if these dimensions are not equivalent to PAR/anamorphic playback settings, then the file can display differently in differently media players. As to fixing the problem, that depends on which setting you are trying to fix and what platform/software is available.

  • IMovie 09 export fails - exported movie stalls, parts missing

    Hi there fellow mac users,
I've got a problem here, and it seems like I am the only one (I've searched extensively for a solution). I'm working on an iM project using 1080i AIC imported video, shot using a JVC HD7. The .TOD files the HD7 produces were converted to AIC, and then imported as 'Large - 960x540' in iM '09. So far so good, the .mov files ie the footage is all very playable and of wonderful quality. iM '09 has a really easy interface and offers anything I need to edit a movie. So now I was ready to export. The first attempt I made was to export a Large movie via the Share menu.
Here the problem started. The export took about 2 hours, which isn't too long considering the length of the movie (about 1:20 hrs). But the .m4v file does not play as expected. The movie stalls at the points where clips meet (without any effects or transitions, so just hard cuts). I have been trying different export formats, and somehow there's allways something wrong with them. Also very strange is that an .m4v export was only 1.26 hrs in duration and a .mov export was 1.11 hrs, so it even has some footage missing. Is anyone else having this problem? Or does anyone have any suggestions in how to solve this issue? All the software on my 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro is up to date, permissions have been repaired etc.
    thanks,
    Koen

I normally use the "no transition" transition for about 90% of my clips, and iMovie handles it great.
If I had to guess, the problem is related to the length of your movie. But it could also be related to export settings.
    First, reboot your Mac. Then...
    1)
I would first right-click on the title of your movie, and select DUPLICATE. This will give you a way to test without hurting your current file.
Then, in the duplicate copy, delete every thing except the first 15 minutes of the movie. Share that in Large, and see how it looks. If it looks good, it is probably the length of the movie that is an issue.
    2) If you are using the SHARE/iTUNES or SHARE/TO WEB GALLERY using the large preset, you should be fine. If you are using SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME and changing the settings, that could be an issue. Check your settings for Keyframe. It should probably be automatic or every 24 frames. Also check data rate. It should be 5000 to 8000 kbps, but could go higher to get better quality. If it is too low, it could cause this issue.
There is nothing in the iMovie architecture that would say it cannot make a theatrical length movie, but in practice, many people report having issues when movies get much longer than 30 minutes. My guess would be that somewhere over 30 minutes you create so many swapfiles and there is so much swapping that iMovie starts behaving unpredictably. For example, iMovie might require that more pages are swapped in than there is real memory available. (But I'm no programmer - so discount that by 80%). There is a difference in the iMovie 09 architecture from iMovie 6. iMovie 6 would render all effects, titles, transitions, audio, etc as you were editing, so you are always waiting for something to finish rendering, iMovie 9 allows you to edit fast and apply all the choices at rendering time.
Probably 95% of the people who use iMovie are making home videos of 5 to 10 minutes, or exporting multiple short movies (say up to 20 minutes) to iDVD which will be accessed in a menu structure. It is rare for someone to want to make a theatrical length movie. When people do, they are probably combining multiple logical movies in order to "fill" a DVD.
My first advice would be to divide this movie up unto chunks of up to 30 minutes. If you need them in one movie, stitch them back together later using QuickTime PRo by putting the in a .mov container.
A third thing to try would be to SHARE/to IDVD and see if you get any better results.
If you are making a real theatrical movie, invest in FInal Cut Express or Final Cut Studio, which handles large movies and has tools to process them in chunks.

While watching purchased movies on itunes....Movie stalls/freezes, While watching purchased

Try to reboot your computer.  If that doesn't work, try deleting the movie and redownloading it (assuming no other AppleID is associated with your computer).
If neither of those work, try contacting the iTunes store.

  • Itunes movies stall while playing

I have been a long time user of iTunes and use snow leopard on my desktop and lion on my laptop. When I play movies I have purchased from iTunes, I have noticed now (and not before) that my movie stalls then speeds up to catch up (both audio and video).
    Can someone help please?
I have 20 gigs of RAM and 8 cores at 3 ghz. I have a dedicated hard drive for iTunes songs and movies and have 73 gigs unused space on it.
    Thanks.

For some reason, I have not faced the problem today. The only difference is that till today I was using external JBL speakers and today I did not connect my external speakers and am playing the music through the built-in speakers on my MacBook.
It is strange, but there is no other difference that can be identified to indicate why the problem is not occurring now. The music has been playing flawlessly for the past 3 hours.
Who knows why these things happen!!!!

  • Downloaded movies stall on ATV

We had an ATV bought us for Christmas (2013) and now the downlodaed movies stall and will not continue to play.
I have reconfigured ATV, uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes, deleted and reinstalled movies, and after one movie it tells me to connect home sharing but is is already on
    Can any one help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

How do I get my self-contained movie to load for a few seconds before it automatically starts? I am getting minor stalls in the beginning of the movie while it is starting to load. After it loads for 10 seconds or so, then it's smooth sailing.

How do I get my self-contained movie to load for a few seconds before it automatically starts? I am getting minor stalls in the beginning of the movie while it is starting to load. After it loads for 10 seconds or so, then it's smooth sailing. While some of the "power users" may know of a way to script an "auto start" for your clip, I do not. Spent several hours a day over the last few days performing "segmentation analysis" of clip characteristics. Based on these results and what little you have said regarding settings used, it might be best to simply attemt to avoid the problem rather than "fix" it. (All of my attempts to reconvert the file either created a green bar artifact, reduced quality to an unacceptable level, or delayed auto start until all tracks were pre-loaded even when only one added "ramp adjustment" track was so set.) Of course, you can always allow the user to manually start playback here.
RECAP: The primary problem here seems to be one of the speed with which the data rate "ramps up/down" during playback. QT compares data rate to file length in order to automatically calculate the start play delay needed to buffer enough data to theoretically prevent an "overrun" during playback. In this case, you committed two cardinal sins -- failure to limit data rate to Internet compatible connection speeds and not limiting quantimization excursion to this range. Failure to do this allows the instantaneous video data rate to monotonically ramp from near zero Mbps to nearly 4 Mbps causing QT to overrun, recalculate, rebuffer, and restart numerous times during the initial 7-8 seconds of play. This is likely due to use of the H.264 codec in the "muti-pass" mode coupled with setting the "Quality slider" for maximum data rate excursion with a possible "auto" frame rate setting. Unfortunately, your content is deceptively complex in motion (allowed to ramp up to high) and transition (can't ramp up fast enough) sequences when compared to the rest of the content (allowed to ramp down too low). Like CD/VCD/DVD playback, "progressing streaming" plays best when you use a "constant throughput" rather than "constant quality" encoding strategy. I.e., you might try using the single-pass mode, using 50-75% quality setting, and adjusting the key frame frequency (or better yet manually inserting extra key frame markers to transitions if using an editor that allows this).
An interesting exercise. Sorry I couldn't come up with any better suggestions.

  • Rented a movie from iTunes, playback has stopped and no longer works.

Today I rented and downloaded a movie from the iTunes store. Got about 5 minutes into it and the playback froze.... I tried to fast forward... Nothing. Tried to rewind. Nothing. So I closed iTunes completely and reopened. Now when I try to play the rental, I just get a black screen. I don't want to waste $4.

  • Apple tv not letting me play movies saying HDCP playback not supported

Apple tv, go into netflix try to play movies, wont let me say's HDCP playback not supported. Called netflix tryed various things, they believe it's the apple device itself, tryed to contact apple of course you have to buy $35 pkg for support , so now I don't want to pay that I would rather just go buy another apple tv which would cost my $100 but would I still have the same issue?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
The first thing to check is that your TV is HDCP compliant. If you are sure that it is:
Check that the HDMI cable is correctly seated at both ends.
Try disconnecting the cable and connecting it again.
    Try another HDMI cable.
Try the Apple TV with another TV

  • ITunes 10 stalls on playback with Library on USB (2 and 3), OS X 10.8.2 2.6 GHz intel i7, MP3 320 kbps, playback is fine using internal SSD...

All this power in a brand new mac-mini.. and iTunes is constantly stalling playback every 1 - 5 minutes (only when the iTunes Library is on external drives)..
(1 - 3 second silence interrupting playback then continuing...)
    iTunes 10.7 (21) 64-bit
I'd prefer to keep my MP3 Library on USB 3.. and preserve the smaller internal SSD drive for other activity...
Is there an Apple certified technique to prevent disk spin down ?
Energy Saver control panel indicates that "Put hard disks to sleep when possible..." is unchecked..
Maybe iTunes could simply buffer larger sizes of the file, or the whole file.
(I have enough RAM to hold my entire 3 gig Library..)
(if the stall occurred only in between songs that would be acceptable)
Can we get an iTunes patch for this ???

    Came across this article:
    http://d43.me/blog/413/slow-startup-and-sleep-problems-on-macbook-pro-22/
Removed the 5 IOFirewire files removed from System/Library/Extensions and rebooted. Startup up within seconds!
Haven't used the firewire in a while, but I don't recall having any issues with it previously.
This worked, so I'm happy. Hopefully it sticks.

  • Just Black movies in iDVD playback

    Hello.
I bought myself a Casio Exilim S770 and Import the mpeg4 avi files to idvd. But there I just see some black movies but can hear the original sound. In QT the playback runs normal. Also in VLC. Another strange thing is, that if i copy some of these files on my desktop I couldnt see there a Snapshot-Thoumbnail as an Icon from the video but a white square-icon with some black letters on it, which i couldn't read. Can you help me?

mpg-4 files with multiplexed audio don't work well (or at all) in QuickTime and iDVD.
I suggest you use VisualHub ( http://www.techspansion.com/ ) to convert them to DV video format. That's what I do with MY 'problem' mpg-4 AVI files.
It has a free trial mode so you can verify it does what you need.

  • Movies stall or hang up when playing on  DVD player

I've used both IDVD 5 and iDVD 6 but the problem continues. DVD's tend to "hang up" or "stick" at multiple scenes when playing on a DVD player. The same problem occurs on all sorts of DVD player of family and friends. This issue does not happen when playing the DVD on a computer. The movies are created in iMovie and the sent to iDVD with Themes added and then burned. I've tried disc immaages vs a burn - same result.
Any ideas what is causing this problem and how to overcome?

My iMac G5 is 2 months old, so probably not an issue. I am currently using Memorex 16X DVD's, but get the stall, hang up and freeze problem when playing on DVD players. This is not an issue playing back on computers. I started making movies on a Dell a year ago using Microsoft Movie Maker and experienced the same problem. Totally different systems, different applications...but the same issue.
All sorts of makes DVD players both in the U.S. and England and Canada have problems playing my DVDs.
I have tried saving as a disc image and the burning, but not a solution.
Is Toast better than using Apple's iDVD or disk utility to burn DVD's. Is there any way to control burn speed? Does Toast allow different burn speeds? Should I use 16X DVD's or 8X or whatever?

  • Video on Exported Movie Freezes During Playback, Audio Continues

This is a reoccurring problem I've found in some of my exported movies. After successfully exporting a project (in full quality), I view the movie in QuickTime player, where, somewhere in the middle of the movie the visual freezes and stays frozen on the same frame for the remainder of the movie. The audio however doesn't skip a beat and continues normally. The playhead in the QuickTime player continues without interruption as well. The location (or frame) where the movie freezes is always the same every time the movie is played. If you attempt to skip over the freeze spot by clicking later in the timeline, you'll successfully move the playhead forward to where you want but the visual is still frozen on that frame and the audio is fine as well. This suggests to me iMovie rendered the movie to a certain point and then, for some reason, rendered a still frame for the remaining duration.
The movie plays normally in the playback/preview within the iMovie app. itself.
The only clue I have is it seems to have this problem after a slow or fast motion effect is used. The frozen frame is generally the last frame in the clip that has a slow motion effect. If I go into the project and move the end of the clip forward to erase the troublesome frame, export, and view, the movie is completely normal until it hits another special effected clip.
This is truly a hassle and the poor solution I've found to fixing it ruins the synching I've put a lot of work into.
Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

I have had the same problem on multiple movies. I'm going to submit your post to apple feedback & I suggest you do the same. Have you found any solution? http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html
I think the problem is related to running out of memory/virtual memory, so on another post I saw rebooting & shutting down other programs before rendering suggested.
Exporting in a smaller size worked for me, but I didn't create this movie to watch in postage stamp size. I'm a new mac user - what happened to apple's promise of things "just working"?

  • ITunes movie flashing during playback

Just rented my first movie on iTunes. It was fine for the first 30 mins then paused with no response from my iMac for about a minute, spinning wheel then playback resumed with either green or purple flashes/frames 2 or 3 times a second. Any ideas what I can do? Thanks

Although you don't state the version of iTunes you're using, your description indicates that you are probably encountering the playback issues that some (many?) users have encountered with the 64-bit version of iTunes 12.1. There is an alternative downloader for 64-bit editions of Windows here:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
that seems to address the most of these playback issues (the alternative installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer).  The "for older video cards" label appears to be something of a misnomer as some people have reported that this corrects problems found on current / high-spec systems.
Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using:" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio (one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8).
Another possible remedy relates to a potential clash between the 64-bit version of iTunes 12 and Google Chrome; some users have reported that uninstalling Chrome (not just not having it running) resolves the iTunes playback issues without having to install the alternative version referred to above.
Finally, you may want to think about reverting to iTunes 12.0 - see Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.
