"Movies" vs. "Home Movies" assignment on Apple TV

How does iTunes and the Apple TV determine which movies show under "Movies" and which show under "Home Movies"?  There does not seem to be any logic as to what shows where.

Please note that "Home Movies" should be "Home Videos".

I rented a movie on my apple computer but it wont play on my apple tv.  never had problems till 1 month ago.  internet fine, home sharing on.

The movie must fully download to iTunes.
If you have an AppleTV1, have you downloaded a 1080p movie rental as it can't handle that, in which case alter your Preferences for downloads to 720p, contact iTunes Store support and see if they can re-enable the download or refund so you can rent again at 720p.
If you have black model ATV2 or ATV3, then I assume you are looking under the Computers icon where a new Rentals row appears in order to play rentals downloaded to iTunes.

  • The home sharing always turn off when i try to see movie on my apple tv

Home sharing turns off when i try to watch movies on my apple tv

If your Apple TV is connected to your network via wi-fi, it could boil down to a range / signal quality issue.  Are you able to stream any other services to the Apple TV without issues?  If possible, connect the Apple TV with ethernet cable and see if that resolves your issue.

  • I have Imovie 08 and ripped home movies in the Apple TV mode.  IMovie won't import them?

    Try this.
Open your home movie in QuickTime Player X. (Or right click on your home movie in the Finder and select Open With... QuickTime Player.
Then click the Commenad Key and the letter I at the same time to open the Inspector.
Tell us what you see next to the word Format: in the Inspector.

  • Purchased movies from iTunes on iPad. Movies have transferred to iTunes on Mac BUT I'm unable to wee/watch movies on my Apple TV. I can see all the other movies I have purchased on iTunes on my AppleTV but NONE of the movies that I purchased on my iPad.

This one has me confused. I have all my devices set up for home sharing. I can stream music and movies from my iphone to my Apple TV. I can stream from my iMac to my Apple TV and from my iPad to my Apple TV.
However, the movies that I originally bought with iTunes on my iPad have transfered to my iTunes on my iMac BUT I can not access these movies through my Apple TV.
The movies I bought on iTunes on my iMac have a small half blue circle and the ones purchased on my iPad do not. Not sure what this means...
This has me really confused and I'm sure it might be nothing more than a simple setting somewhere but I would love to figure this out. It's almost like there is some digital right on these movies and it's not allwing me to access this from my other Apple devices.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Geesh - all this information and no  one has any clue to this? Not even someone from Apple?
Can someone at least point me in the right direction?

Only Movies you have purchased will show up in "Movies" on your Apple TV. These get streamed and do not require any computer to be turned on in your house.  Unfortunately, Apple has not made playing of rented movies that easy.  art308 essentially answered this at the very beginning of the discussion.  You must turn on Home Sharing on the computer you rented the movie.  In iTunes on your computer go to the top menu bar and under "File" you will see "Home Sharing." Enter your Apple ID, etc. to get Home Sharing up and running on that computer.  You also need to turn on Home Sharing on your Apple TV.  If you have more than one computer in your house, it is probably a good idea to turn on Home Sharing on all your computers while you're at it...unless you have some unique reason why you do not want that functionality active on some of the computers.  To confirm Home Sharing is on, and if you have more than one computer running iTunes at home, look at the left menu bar in iTunes (the new version of iTunes does not have that visible by default, but I choose to have it visible).  Under "Shared" you will see the iTunes libraries that are included in your Home Sharing network-assumeing those computers are on.
Now, when you go to your Apple TV you need to go to "Computers."  You will see a list of all the iTunes Libraries that are in your Home Sharing network that are turned on.  The computers that are off will not show up. Click on the one that contains your rented movie.  Start playing.
I must say...this is one heck of a pain.  This would all be much easier if you could go to "Movies" on your Apple TV and see a listing of all your active rented movies...even those not rented on the Apple TV.  Personally, I think the way Apple has this set up goes against its mantra of..."It just Works."

  • My apple tv main menu no longer displays the "movies" section, just internet, computers, and settings. Does anyone know why or how to get it back up? Recently rented a movie directly through apple tv but can't see the movies section in main menu now.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Check the location setting for the iTunes Store is correct.
You might also try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Restart your router.
If you are still having problems try a restore.

  • I am trying to rent a movie on my Apple tv keep getting the message - verification required before you can make purchases you must go to the itunes store on your computer and verify your payment information

    Hi  I am Del
I am trying to rent a movie on my Apple tv keep getting the message - verification required before you can make purchases you must go to the itunes store on your computer and verify your payment information
    Thanks

Have you paired your Apple Tv with your iTunes account?  That's how rentals and purchases are billed.  If, however, you have already done that it is possible that there is a glitch in the system.  I've had that happen occasionally and it usually goes away if I reset Apple Tv.  On one occasion that I didn't work so I had to go to iTunes and deauthorize and then authorize this computer.  Also, check to see if your Home Sharing is on (under File in iTunes).  Hope that helps.

  • HT1860 I purchased a movie on my apple tv (1st generation) and I'm unable to download the movie to my computer.  What am I missing?

I purchased a movie on my apple tv (1st generation) and I'm unable to download the movie to my computer.  What am I missing?  I have home sharing set up and can see my computer iTunes on my apple TV.  I just can't see my apple TV movie on my computer.

    Hello theycallmeboz,
If the movie was purchased on the AppleTV it wont show up in home sharing until that movie has been downloaded to an iTunes library. You can download previous purchases from the iTunse Store at any time. The article below goes over that process.

You may also want to take a look at enabling automatic downloads on your computer so that anytime you purchase content, it gets downloaded to iTunes.

  • IPhone stuck - won't move beyond the Apple logo

I just downloaded the latest iPhone update and while it was syncing with my phone, it froze, then I got a message from iTunes saying it couldn't connect to my iPhone. I disconnected and reconnected, and it has said it's synced, but my iPhone won't start now. It turns on, but never moves beyond the Apple logo. Underneath the apple, there's a white bar, as if something is trying to update or download, but nothing ever happens. It just stays stuck there. To restart it, I have to press both the power and home button. I've tried restarting about 5 times, and it does the same each time. I've tried syncing with iTunes again, and still nothing happens.
Has this happened to anybody else before? If so, how did you resolve it?

FIXED! OK guys, this is what I did.
I just took it to the Apple store and they fixed it for me.
I know you were all waiting for a solution that you could do yourself but there wasn't one that I could figure out.
    My problem once again:
iTouch 1st Gen with first OS.
    Upgraded OS to 3.1.2
Then got hung up on white apple logo with white bar beneath it.
When I took it to the Apple store, they said that the downloaded OS might have been corrupt or not downloaded properly/completely.
So they re-installed the OS for me. Then I was able to go home and sync it with my iTunes without losing anything!
They got some computers and software at the Apple store that I don't think you can get anywhere. Diagnostics stuff. That's why it's better to just let them fix it. They didn't charge me anything for it either.
    Hope this helps!

  • I cant move my rented movie to my apple tv first generation, i cant move my rented movie to my apple tv first generation

i cant move my rented movie to my apple tv 1st generation. keeps saying something about firewall but i dont have any security turned on... helppp

Kelly - If you just opened the AppleTV1, go to Settings>About and check the software version.
Last software made was 3.02 (one of the better ones).
If lower, update it to that, but make a note of what it shipped with in case you ever factory restore it.
Have you configured ATV1 for LAN/internet access (ethernet by simply plugging in, wi-fi by adding wi-fi details in settings).?  If connected to internet you should be able to access YouTube on it.
ATV1 does not use Home Sharing.  iTunes computer and AppleTV1 need to be on the same LAN.
To set it up for itunes use you must 'register' it with iTunes with a numeric code.  Ideally the main computer used with it should be registered for 'syncing'.  Have you added a computer iTunes library under the AppleTV's Settings>Computers menu?
You need to highlight the top entry on this page, press select which should give a numeric code.  You then go to itunes on the computer and look for an AppleTV under Devices on the left, select and enter the code.  You can then configure auto or custom syncing.
Once configured, locate the rental in iTunes and choose to 'move it' to the AppleTV.

  • My movie icon disappeared from my Apple TV screen. I can't watch my movies on my Apple TV

My movie icon disappeared from my Apple TV screen. I can't watch my movies on my Apple TV

Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • Save movie downloaded on Apple TV to Itunes

How do I save a movie downloaded on Apple TV to the linked iTunes?
This is a gen 3 Apple TV with up to date firmware.
I purchased movie on iTunes on laptop, but deferred download. Later I downloaded to apple TV (HD file with slowish internet connection so it doesn't stream.) Movie now ready to play, but I would like to save it to itunes before playing if possible so I don't have to download again onto itunes. That would be a frustration mainly because of borderline broadband speed.
It used to be that the apple TV showed up in the iTunes sidebar, but at least on my machine that is no longer the case. If it was there I presume i could "synch".
Perhaps the problem is lack of real storage on current Apple TV.
Both the TV and the computer are signed into iCloud and Home Sharing.

There is no content saved on the ATV Gen 2 or 3, there simply is not sufficient storage to save content there.
Download the content in iTunes on the computer.
Store > Check for Available downloads.
